It blows my mind that Laird and Eastman didnt think they were even going to get to a second issue of TMNT! Also I have wanted that Swamp Thing Bernie Wrightson cover for years 🙌🤘
They were just a couple of dudes scraping by and were already living the dream when they were able to put out the first issue. Little did they know what was in store for them. As for Swampy, it’s hard to beat a good Wrightson cover!
I've ventured into the realm of self publishing with limited funds and just getting your book printed is an accomplishment. Before computers we has to do a lot more work and the chances of being successful were slim.
No one could have predicted tmnt being this huge. I was a tmnt fanatic as a kid but I thought the franchise died out in the mid 90s. It still surprises me seeing every new incarnation and how much staying power it has had.
It’s not a book that appeals to me a lot either. I was all in on Ultimate Spider-Man at the time, so I picked it up in my pull, just like I had been doing with Ultimate Spider-Man up to that point. USM was the title that got me back into comics and I hated to see it come to an end.
Loved the back stories, especially the X-Men 50 one. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I have a Captain America 100 in a CGC 6.5. The cover is not as white as I would like, often think about swapping it out for a higher graded and whiter cover.
I sacrificed grade on my first Cap100 for cover whiteness. The one I passed was definitely higher grade, but the eye appeal was drastically lower than the copy I picked up, due to the issue’s trademark tanning. In all seriousness, try and find a convention in your area that Steranko is at. You may have to stand in line for a bit, but as soon as you’re in earshot, you’ll stop caring that you’re waiting. The man is probably the smallest adult male in the room, but his presence is gargantuan. I kid you not, I’ve stood in line with friends before JUST to hear more stories. You pay for the signature(s), but the real prize is the story he will share with you.
@@CoMoComicBooks 100% I saw Halloween candy out three weeks ago 😅 I paid the $700 for my 8.5 X-Men 50 from my LCS I saw a beautiful 9.6 on EBay nobody wanted cause it had a detached staple so CGC gave it a green label I wouldn’t mind getting another 8.5 at the lower price I wanted a TMNT 2 last year but I’m kinda hold off now cause I’m looking into finding a 2nd print issue 1 in my price range
What is strange coincidence! I am getting back into collecting comics after 10 year break. I don’t know a lot about Batman comics I was always in marvel collector and I bought the book about a week ago because I love the cover and the artist I won an auction on eBay. CGC graded 6.5 and I paid $306..
Work for hire definitely gave the upper hand to the comic companies. Somebody came up with each and every one of those logos and, despite of how many ways that logo has been used since, it was just a one time job.
I missed this video when it first dropped, but I gotta tell you I feel the pain of that ultimate fallout number four. I purchased a CGC 9.6 for $1400 in the day if one could only go back in time.
Oh no! That one hurts. But that’s the thing with comic collecting. Sooner or later we all get caught holding the bag. If it hasn’t happened yet, it’s just a matter of time.
Hey Drew , what ever happened to Avengers Mansion ? Did they abandon it after the events of UNDER SIEGE ?? Just wondering because you mentioned Avengers Tower ? My Detective 400 was one of the first 5 comics I submitted to CGC. Only came back a 6.5 which I was a bit disappointed with. Great book to own though.
You know, as I was editing the video I caught that too. The mansion is definitely a thing, but for some reason my brain defaulted to the tower when I was writing this one.
@@CoMoComicBooks I was just curious because I'm not really familiar with anything past the Copper Age as far as Avengers goes and if they relocated I wouldn't know about it. In the movies I think they are operating out of a skyscraper as opposed to a Mansion.. Idk.
It will be interesting to see where it stabilizes at for the long term. It was definitely overinflated during the boom and I’m just happy for the people who want a copy who might be able to better afford one now.

Welcome back to the hobby George! It’s a buyers market at the moment, so it’s a pretty decent time to pick it back up.
I think its sad how Steranko or his family has never gotten the deserved credit for that logo

I’ve wondered that myself before. My best guess would be that it was an oops on the color guide, but that’s just speculation.

I have yet to pull the trigger on UF4, because there are so many issues I’m still hesitant to but one.
SO. MANY. COPIES. I have two that I bought off the shelf the day it came out. I’ve never bought another one since, surprisingly.
