I love how quick that simple "live long and prosper" grip takes it from "well this is pleasant, how are you this afternoon sir" to "I am in so much pain I can suddenly taste colours and see music" :D
This is all gold, the lead instructor couldn’t be better; and it’s almost 100% defensive. Still helps to know what it feels like to have your head smacked around, in addition, but obviously. He covers control of space, escalation... breaks it down simply. While his technique seems perfect, his teaching skills seem to be extraordinary.
I'm digging the intro, the content, the banter, everything. Y'all are delivering some great, great stuff. Thank you for all you do, to everybody involved.
After this and the previous episode with this guy makes me wants to get back into this, especially if he's my teacher. It seems like he is passionate with teaching.
well bows are still a good weapon that can be used in situations that a gun cannot. Also in places like Australia where I live guns are licensed and quite restricted. Longbows are not (yet) so they are a more viable option. Although shooting someone with one would still be highly illegal, probably even in self defence.
What is amazing about this is, I don't live anywhere near Austin, Texas, but watching this episode looks like it is so well taught, that if I had a buddy like Brian has Jason (and vice versa), it seems that we could learn/try the proper technique of this in the comfort of our own homes. Also, those three coaches come across as amazing guys to learn from, as if they have the ability to make you comfortable right away with learning these skills. Thanks to all involved for these Ju Jitsu videos.
This is super valuable, as someone who is an infantryman. I learned some of this from a Ranger talking about methods to control a target, either a person who is panicking but needs to be protected from life threatening injuries or a threat who needs to be eliminated and controlled.
The people you have on make such a difference these are such amazing and interesting individuals and every time i get a notification i have to stop whatever i was doing and watch the new episode
Must say, I do like how these applications are always explained, in how they are used and the situations they can be useful for. I know from experience that wrist locks almost never (if ever) work in an actual fight, and was worried he was going to pretend they do. It was nice to see him explain how he used these in work environments as a preemptive restraint, and not as some secret fight ending technique like so many McDojos do. Also nice that he allows you to try and work around them, gets you doing a live drill* and also avoiding the "classical mess". *for those who don't know, a dead drill is where someone throws a punch and keeps their arm out so there partner can do the Jackie Chan stuff, a live drill is where they immediately retract the arm once they've punched, forcing you to make it work on the go.
This is incredible. The coach is such a cool guy, Brian and Jason are amazing at asking the right questions and demonstrating; the whole shebang is there. Love it guys, keep it up.
You could seriously just make a whole channel dedicated to this kind of thing and i'd watch every minute of it. Great bunch of guys both teaching and learning, its informative, entertaining, its great :)
I always really like these sort of stuff as it teaches you how to take down a person in a non-aggressive and quick way that is non-lethal. Because when you're a beginner you'd always want to go the lethal way in self-defense but with this it teaches you how to perform a non-lethal and quick takedown of the opponent trying to attack you.
I seriously think these should become a running mini series for modern rogue and include other martial arts! Kinda like how you guys did the swords the other week. I'm a huge fan of martial arts and would loooove to get back into doing it (i did 6 years of taekwondo) and you guys really bring something extra to the table that basic instructional videos just don't have. Keep it up!!
I love watching all of your videos. they help improve many aspects of life. hacks, entertainment, and self defense. it's even better that you two are great friends making videos that I'm sure millions enjoy viewing. I hope you guys love doing videos as much as I love viewing them. I envy your friendship, buy cherish it too. please keep up the amazing work and make others smile.
Man, this channel is excellent. Quality content, likeable hosts, interesting topics. I have to say, however, the most amazing part is the comments section. These are some of the most consistently civil conversations I've seen on UA-cam. Somebody has a question and they get a legitimate answer, usually followed up with thanks for said answer. The Modern Rogue is a nice place to be.
We definitely put a fair bit of work into curating and policing the comments (it's something I don't think a lot of channels do very well), but generally speaking we need less of that than I've seen elsewhere. Most of our commenters are pretty rad.
We have amassed a group of 350,000 cool people who just want to drink a few beer, light something of fire and be that guy at a party that says "hold my beer, this is gonna be awesome."
awesome, always love these modern rogue videos, introduced my friend to this a little while ago and they've watched every single video by now. keep up the good work brian/jason.
amazing, My Grandfather was a Military Police back in WW2 and after. He regularly had to 'escort' folks that didnt necessarily want to be escorted. he showed me this at wayyyyyy to young an age. i loved it. well, after he walked me around for a while in the hold. lol, long story short, i broke two other kids wrists in the next two days.... accidentally, but none the less, this is a for real move and works amazingly well. ive perfected it over the years. also, great to teach your daughter or son.
I took aikido for about two years, I think what most people don't understand about it is that it's not really a fighting system, it's more of an art form than anything else. There's some stuff in that you could actually use to fuck someone up, but only if you already know how to fight, and know what you're doing before learning aikido. If you try to do a technique exactly as it's taught, you're just gonna get beat up. That being said, if you think about the techniques as a fighter, and don't get caught up with the art aspect of it, there are some parts of it that could work really well if changed to be more practical. You never see aikido masters in ufc and such because they mastered the art form of it, and don't think about how it would work in a real fight. Or at least that's my opinion on it, anyways.
Ahh, right, it's been a while since I actually took a class. Plus in the class I had, we only did it when the arm was in a Z shape, like how it is in katatori nikyo. Thanks for correcting me.
Same sort of thing applies in Silat. If you don't know what Silat is, go watch The Raid and The Raid 2. Anyway, there is a lot of good stuff in those arts, especially the knife fighting. But sadly, you can't really study it the same way you can other arts with lots of live drills as a beginner, as most of it is designed to snap body parts and to kill (it is a killing art after all), so safely doing live drills, with just restraint instead of snapping or dislocating joints is difficult. Like Aikido, it's one of those arts where you should already know how to fight before trying to learn how to apply it.
Fighters should not think about techniques. Techniques manifest themselves as a situation unfolds. They need to learn principals and apply them. Look at Salahuddin Muhammad's aiki jujutsu seminars.
Unfortunately I ended up in a fight a couple weeks back, but it ended up being not so bad. I had the video about stopping a telegraphed punch fresh in my head, and the guy threw that punch. I stepped into him, wrapped him up, and brought him down to the ground until he calmed down. I've got no training nor have I practiced the move, but just having the knowledge from these videos really helped me out in a time where I could have been hurt.
20+ year deputy sheriff, (in corrections)the wrist lock shown is VERY effective. always avoid going to ground unless no other way. With the lock you can dictate anything he can do. VERY EFFECTIVE!
Why does the idea of Jason and Brian getting hurt make me so happy? *Thinks* Let me say that again. Why does the idea of Jason and Brian almost dying make me so happy? There we go. :3
The hardest part of this technique is actually grabbing the person, but once you have the hand, they are yours. It becomes very clear how hard it is when trying it in a sparring situation, in Krav we use a modified version for dealing with knives, even though its a rare scenario where you would actually want to grab a person with a knife, striking gets the job done, our instructor proved it by having us wear a helmet and had us try and stab him, lets just say even through a helmet, getting rocked will often make the knife drop. Same goes for the head with take downs, where the head goes, the body follows. We do a take down from behind where the assailant is busy on another person, you come up behind, both hands go for the head, using eye socket and nose for grip, then by taking a step back and twisting the head you can force them down.
For extra effect on a wristlock, apply a hold around their thumb and first finger once you establish a lock. it allows you to apply pain more easily if they don't comply with you and also stops them from trying to grab things.
It's always nice to see people experience new things and learn. And suffer. While I watch then from a comfy chair while having a cold one. BTW, the goodies crate. Do you ship em to Europe?
Man I wish I was on the same continent as Ace's, I would *love* to work with Mikal and the guys to learn the techniques my disabled arse is capable of doing. It can feel extremely vulnerable when you are out in the world on two crutches, or in your wheelchair - so many people feel like they can just grab you and move you around, to have the confidence of something like this must feel awesome.
I really hope this is going to be more than a three parter, same with the long swords. I love seeing other people learn about HEMA. Its a great time, till you go MPTHG black knight.
When Coach Mikal mentioned putting people in a position where they can't move, I remembered a thing where if someone sits back in a chair (at greater than a 90 degree angle) you can press just your thumb to their forehead and it will be very hard for them to stand up. Also thanks guys for teaching me how to fight people. This will come in very handy once I start going to bars or clubs. Now when do we learn Krav Maga?
"Helping [my nerd friends] realize that they can take down a guy who's 6'5" and been an athlete his entire life. And they can strangle him unconscious and there is nothing he can do about it." I got chills running down my spine as he said that.......
the way this works is the same reason a lobster can be defeated by a rubber band, or an alligator can be defeated by a bit of duct tape. the muscle in the claw and in the mouth are made to close, hard, not open,
6:29 "..all of this is predicated on: If you're fighting, you're fighting for keeps, and you should have no hesitation in snappin' wrists or legs or whatever." NO. There are three ways to win a fight. Intimidation, Capitulation or Devastation. In grappling arts you have a large window after you have acheived a position in which you can show your opponent that you can beat them, but before you actually hurt them. In this window you can force them to "throw in the towel" before you have to seriously damage them. That saves you a court case.

The Modern Rogue my question is this: could me as a skinny ass weakling, take down someone using this? I'm like 57-58 and 120idh lbs
John Francis yes you can, I'm also kinda skinny and I actually do Bjj
I love how quick that simple "live long and prosper" grip takes it from "well this is pleasant, how are you this afternoon sir" to "I am in so much pain I can suddenly taste colours and see music" :D
Live short and suffer
"Positive thinking" 😂😂😂😂 this dude is amazing
4:50 karate kid it aka take out the leg
You guys are training to become drunk ninja assassins in front of our very eyes...
And we're supporting it
worse. were following their lead
I see nothing wrong here.
This is all gold, the lead instructor couldn’t be better; and it’s almost 100% defensive. Still helps to know what it feels like to have your head smacked around, in addition, but obviously.
He covers control of space, escalation... breaks it down simply. While his technique seems perfect, his teaching skills seem to be extraordinary.
you should make a feature film where Brian and Jason are detectives solving crimes using techniques in this series
I'm certainly down for that.
zimon jonsson Actually, I want to write and produce a series based on that concept.
I would buy that movie in a heart beat.
like batman but
shatcan
But they are drunk 95% of the time
I'm digging the intro, the content, the banter, everything. Y'all are delivering some great, great stuff. Thank you for all you do, to everybody involved.
Thanks for checking it out!
This show is seriously underrated. keep up the great work!!
Thanks!
It is like they need a second channel to show the extended cuts and outtakes.
After this and the previous episode with this guy makes me wants to get back into this, especially if he's my teacher. It seems like he is passionate with teaching.
Wolff mikal was my teacher for almost two years. He is amazing and his explanations for techniques could teach even a baby.
If you are interested in BJJ I would certainly recommend looking up Chewjitsu, and Chad Hardy on UA-cam
Having a good teacher really helps.
11:12 That was *one* satisfying high five!
They nailed it.
YES!
At that moment I took my eyes away and hearing that for me was. Did some broke a leg or arm :D
At 14:04 though when they need to decide who they're gonna shake hands with :D
Same here, I thought someone lit a Blackcat.
"just break the wrist and walk away- break the wrist, walk away"
Heh.
DO YOU THINK ANYONE THINKS I'M A LOSER BECAUSE I COME HOME STARLA EVERY NIGHT???
if someone's coming to attack me in real, i'll be doing this
Everytime Brian and Jason fight, it's hilarious like a cat fight 12:54
It's kinda sad.
this is entirely too accurate.
oml i'm dying XD
The Modern Rogue I DIED!!!
10:52
No, no.... "let me DO IT one more time."
What a badass instructor.
I love the "bing" it's so comical and non aggressive
“ What do i do with this hand?”
“ Uh don’t get hit”
Words to live by
The modern rogue should definitely be skilled with a bow
It's coming!
Jason Murphy Nice!
HYPE
Certainly the Modern Rogue would have a crossbow in his arsenal as well
well bows are still a good weapon that can be used in situations that a gun cannot. Also in places like Australia where I live guns are licensed and quite restricted. awesome job guys. thanks for bringing jiu-jitsu to the masses, showing that it works, and is really fun
The people you have on make such a difference these are such amazing and interesting individuals and every time i get a notification i have to stop whatever i was doing and watch the new episode
I love the way experts control vocabulary when teaching. It really guides the way people think.
It's interesting that you bring that up. Steve at Stunt Ranch is really good at this, too.

No joke, these videos are always a joy to see in my sub feed. Exemplary work.
thanks, man. Help us spread the word!
Coach Ty falls so gracefully in every video!
Great episode guys! I really like these takedowns/locks you do at the Dojo. Keep it up!!
Thanks!
You could seriously just make a whole channel dedicated to this kind of thing and i'd watch every minute of it. Great bunch of guys both teaching and learning, its informative, entertaining, its great :)

By far the best series on youtube, hands down.
That's great to hear. I appreciate it.
This is top notch MR quality right there. Love these types of episodes!
Thanks!
Best UA-cam channel ever never stop what you're doing
Coach Mikal is a hilarious badass. Anything you guys put up with him in it, I will watch and thumbs up.

You guys are some of the few on UA-cam who need more subscribers

I'd love to explore MANY more styles. (and do more with the Aces team)
Lovely to see a fairly simple technique broken down to its fundamentals for a fun and easy lesson.

This guy is awesome! Some of the people they do stuff with don't react to the jokes but this guy was rolling with them and shooting back with his own.
Modern Rogue to Modern Fighter. So many awesome things you do. Keep up!

awesome, always love these modern rogue videos, introduced my friend to this a little while ago and they've watched every single video by now. keep up the good work brian/jason.
Excellent! Thanks for spreading the word.
What a wonderful pairing you two guys make.
this is my favorite series you have done so far! thank you for the great content
Excellent! Thanks for checking it out.
Brian I love you man! You've taught me more practical things than school ever has and for that I truly thank you! Keep up the good work man!
You guys are amazing, and I'm learning so much on your channel. Make the self-defense videos a regular thing, please.
I imagine Brian being 70 and still giggling in that cute way, im not that weird at parties, TRUST ME
is it because you're not at parties?
Nice one weaboo. But being at parties is pretty normal if you don't sleep with your favorite anime character body pillow.
thank you my man for having my back, i still have a headache after last night and the alcohol
C'mon, it was a good one.
One hundredth thumbs up my man :)
I love the cold opens you guys do always a little funny hope you keep it up
They seem to be a really good coach! I wish I lived close by to take classes with them! Love these video hope you guys keep making more with them!
Great show and I love the instructor you bring on for these fight techniques.
amazing, My Grandfather was a Military Police back in WW2 and after.
I imagine you guys find new and creative ways to pull this off on each other all the time now.
"I'm not going in there."
*Immediately goes inside*
I took aikido for about two years, I think what most people don't understand about it is that it's not really a fighting system, it's more of an art form than anything else. That makes sense.
That too lol. Although, isn't it the first technique? Looks more like ikkyo than it does nikyo to me.
Ahh, right, it's been a while since I actually took a class. Plus in the class I had, we only did it when the arm was in a Z shape, like how it is in katatori nikyo. Thanks for correcting me.

I stepped into him, wrapped him up, and brought him down to the ground until he calmed down. I've got no training nor have I practiced the move, but just having the knowledge from these videos really helped me out in a time where I could have been hurt.
Outstanding! So glad to hear that (and glad that you're unharmed!)

I'm definitely ready for a blooper reel of this.
At 10:30, the instructor corrects him from saying "try" to "do", man that guy just did a Yoda moment!!
I love the fact that Brian derives such joy from learning how to establish control over another person.
For extra effect on a wristlock, apply a hold around their thumb and first finger once you establish a lock. it allows you to apply pain more easily if they don't comply with you and also stops them from trying to grab things.
Mikal seems like a great guy and amazing teacher
I'd love to listen to the two of you do a podcast.
That might be coming sooner than you think.
I absolutely love these videos, please do more like this!
I love this! I also used this when I was bouncing! .. great for getting people to calm down ,and force them out the door..
What an awesome instructor or is it Professor. I loved this video
"No i meant that you guys are original gangsters"
"Oh, thanks fox news"
I fucking *lost* it, this guy got some lip
great episode! Once again making me want to move to Austin and get this guy as my teacher.
Mikal is hilarious, I love these videos!
These guys are hilarious and informative! More vids with them please
It's always nice to see people experience new things and learn. And suffer. While I watch then from a comfy chair while having a cold one.
BTW, the goodies crate. Do you ship em to Europe?
that was a nasty crisp hive five my brotha
"OGs... Original Gangsters..." "Aight, thanks Fox News..." This dude is such a brother xD
I love the Modern Rogue!
Murphy reminding Brian to tap is the best part haha
We both kept forgetting!
Man I wish I was on the same continent as Ace's, I would *love* to work with Mikal and the guys to learn the techniques my disabled arse is capable of doing. Best channel on youtube
Man, these guys need more recognition
thanks, man. Help spread the word?
My science teacher back in my freshman year did the first wrist lock on me to demonstrate to the class, I didn’t even move and it was super painful.
2:27 we are gonna need a gif of this too
These guys are so patient with you! Though you are poroperly appreciative
Love this series!
Jason is the only one who can make Ty crack a smile
I live for these videos, also, hi Brian
When Coach Mikal mentioned putting people in a position where they can't move, I remembered a thing where if someone sits back in a chair (at greater than a 90 degree angle) you can press just your thumb to their forehead and it will be very hard for them to stand up.
Also thanks guys for teaching me how to fight people. This will come in very handy once I start going to bars or clubs. Now when do we learn Krav Maga?
"Helping [my nerd friends] realize that they can take down a guy who's 6'5" and been an athlete his entire life. And they can strangle him unconscious and there is nothing he can do about it."
I got chills running down my spine as he said that.......
In the moment I can't think of s time to use it, but it's a very good move to know
gotta say, as a brazillian, it gives me pride to see my country's flag being shown
Wow. This move is actually great to use
Its pretty slick and simple.
It was astonishing how well it worked.
You were really good at it. (either that or you've been paying Brandt some very nice compliments)
I never heard of this move so I'm glad I saw you both do it.
It looks like they are having lots of fun. Those moves are actually really hard to execute, thou.
So good! He's a really awesome teacher. I enjoyed that.
the way this works is the same reason a lobster can be defeated by a rubber band, or an alligator can be defeated by a bit of duct tape. the muscle in the claw and in the mouth are made to close, hard, not open,
