Just a personal tip for beginners: start with fading lower than what's shown in this video. To do that make sure that the first line you make(0:00 - 1:10) is placed a few centimeter lower. I say this because beginners often try to fade too late.
This video has saved us so much money! I cut my husband's hair every few months between barber cuts. I watch this before I give him a cut to remind me how to cut it. I really appreciate you for making this video! Thanks!
You have the perfect technique while remaining simple for the beginner. I really appreciate the way you teach like a beginner would understand very well. Kudos 👌
TIP FOR EVERYONE IN THE COMMENTS: Never follow the round of the head with the clippers because you're gonna end up making their head look extra round. In the middle of the back of the head you see how his bone is popping out and then above that it curves inward / , the clippers shouldn't touch the scalp directly. From bottom to top the clippers should go like this \( like once it reaches the middle and the rounding of the head dont worry if you feel like youre not cutting anything. Clippers must go in a straight line thats why it shouldnt be touching the top half. Once youre reaching the end with the clipper make sure you flick your wrist toward you, to taper it off. Imagine an airplane. When it takes off it goes in a straight line then scoops upward slowly as it goes up in the sky. Thats how the clipper movement should look like too. The reason being that at the top of the half of the head men have that little swirly. If you follow the round of the head you'll end up cutting the hairs around the swirl too short which will cause them to be sticking out. By going in a straight line with the flat part of the clippers you will avoid cutting any length up there that will otherwise fuck up the haircut. If you have someone with a flat head then you want to be careful because they wont have the bone sticking out to guide your clippers off the head when it's time. In situations like that, be extra cautious to try to make their head LOOK round with the haircut. So cut the hair in a way that it will mimick a round head. I would say do the same technique just make sure when you reach the middle of the back of the head you go in a straight lime same thing \( it will look like this \| (the right is the flat head) you see how it will leave more hair behind leaving you more room to tweak the haircut to make their head look round. Also, START BIG DONT QUICKLY TAKE A 1 GUARD AND CHOP HAIR. Start with a 3 or 4. Leave yourself room to fix the haircut. If u go with a 1 right away u cant really fix it because theyre almost practically bald (I'm a cosmetologist) If anyone has any questions lmk I gotchu
@@craigchard1127 You say that yet there's truth and I was looking for this comment. For someone to say start with 3 or 4 guard not one I seen that and said wth. Btw I am not a cosmetologist.
Thank you for taking the time to share your expertise and experience with us. Your post was very informative (and is very underrated). It's been very helpful to me in understanding the important basics. I was just wondering if you could expand on this a little further with some tips & tricks that you may have for the top half of the head, if you have the time. I would really appreciate it. Thanks again! Btw, it's always nice to see a person ignore somebody's *terrible* attempt at trolling. Definitely shows your professionalism, tbh. (Personally, I'm going to have a little fun with this guy lol.) I also really liked your clever use of symbols as help to further visualize your already descriptive instructions ( "\(" & "\|" ). Tbh, it would be nice if the uploader would pin your comment so more can see it, as it works perfectly alongside his video and supplements it very well. Just the small tip telling people to start longer by itself would likely be appreciated by a great many who otherwise would have messed up on their first attempt, which is normal with anything (I've definitely done it). Plus, it gives you more practice out of one haircut lol. If you made your own instructional videos, I think they would be very successful and educational based upon your example of successfully teaching something solely through text. Which can definitely be a challenge, especially when the thing your teaching is best learned through visuals alongside the instruction & hands on time, such as cutting hair. Just saying, lol. Anyway, sorry for the long comment. You took the time out of your day a year ago to type out your professional experience in very educational and clever way, and I think your post is underrated and deserving of more praise. So I just thought it would be a good idea to return the favor by giving you a little time out of my own day to show a little extra appreciation lol. Hope all is well and I look forward to hearing some more advice if you have the time!
@@craigchard1127 It was 5 minutes that helped me a lot actually. Although it was only a 5 min read, the OP likely spent more than 5 minutes of their day to share their experience. It's obviously for beginners, but the basics are always most important. We're not all experienced or professionals...which leads me to this question: If reading this was just a waste of time and you know this stuff, why did you keep reading? Better yet, why even watch this video? Something makes me doubt that it's because you're a professional who watched out of appreciation for the craft and was even willing to take the time out of your day to expand upon the video in a comment because of that appreciation and to be helpful to others, like OP did. I think you're just upset that you messed up your first attempt at a fade up because you started with a 1 or something. I did the same, it happens to the best of us. So there's no reason to be upset, bro. ...Plus, I'm sure it grew back just fine 😂. Especially by now...hopefully. Anyway, if you actually read this... Now, *THAT'S* a waste of your life 😂. For real though, I'm just messing around. I hope you have a good rest of your day!
My God thank you so much. This is the second time I’m cutting my husbands hair and both times I’ve used your video to make sure I did it right. Also this is probably the easiest to understand and really well explained video than a lot of other barber UA-camrs. Thanks!
FINALLY! Someone discusses the lever! Always, they say open and closed. Never explaining which way is long and short! Thanks for that explanation! Now I get it!
Elizabeth Moon, great! That's one of the goals of my videos. You should also check out the barber terminology video I released. Thanks for your comment
I’m a woman with a side shave, have always done my own fade. It will be the first time I do my boyfriend’s fade for the same reason this weekend. We got this everyone! 👍
After watching this video I was actually able to give my husband a decent haircut! He's back at work today and has been receiving compliments on it whaaaaaat!! Covid is bringing out secret talents :D
I've been practicing my fades, and dang, this makes a lot of sense! I started with 3, then 2, then 1. Most of it was blended fairly well except the line from the 1 to 2. I even used the 1.5 and I still couldn't get it to blend. I understand this perfectly. Thank you!
Yeah, that's what I was going to do just intuitively, but I thought I'd watch a UA-cam tutorial first to see and was surprised to find a better way of doing it! Less intuitive at first but I can definitely see it would work better.
This was a great tutorial! I just cut my husband's hair doing this method (the 1, 3 & then 2 for the fade) and it worked wonders. The only problem was the 2 for the fade wasn't short enough so I had to use the 1 but be very careful and it came out great! He's really picky and he actually really liked it. Thanks for sharing this tutorial. I posted a before and after on my instagram and just sent you the video on instagram lol
Man I use this technique every time to cut my own hair and it works so well!! I do need 2 mirrors to make sure it’s perfect but hey I’m not having to share a blade with who knows how many people at a barbershop, I don’t need to pay for haircuts either, thanks so much👍👍
🙋♀️ I cut his hair when we 1st started dating, barber the next day said it wasn't too bad of a job done. Here's round 2, withOUT the alcohol 1st. Oh and it's a bald mid fade 😬 I can do 1 size guard and line up no problem as I used to do my son's. A fade 😳.....we are about to find out 🤞
I had 4 boys never once spent money at a barber. My sis and I got books from the library before internet lol. Went camping and cut away learning how to cut hair.
The place they got a hair cut must be expensive , can't believe u pay $20 where I live the minimum for I cut has to be £10 or under and i normally get it for £7 but once I'm a adult I have to pay £12
I've watched a bunch of haircutting videos on YT and appreciate your videos being straight-forward! Super easy to follow along. I'll watch them again as a refresher and can say that I've successfully cut my bf's hair! On the 5th time now and it gets easier/better. For everyone who is trying for the first time, go in with CONFIDENCE! If you are unsure, then for sure the haircut will be s*****. If you're having a bad day/bad mood, don't cut your own/bf's/dad/brothers/friend's hair. Secondly, TAKE YOUR TIME. If you need to, just cut off a little bit and take a step back to see how it's looking before cutting more. As you practice further along, it gets more intuitive. Good luck!
Just gave myself a corona fade, took an hour, every room in the house is covered in hair, I have a new found respect for barbers and it looks awful! 💪🏻😂
Don’t do like you see on this movie. Do longest first with short taper lever, then 1 clipper number lower with long taper snd then with short setting. Go then to lower number and do exactly the same here. It’s much less risky to fuck anything and much easier to fix if you do.
This is awesome and by far the easiest "how to fade" I've come across! I did my husband's fade using this video (during pandemic)...and it came out great!! I will do it again, today. He is so impressed with the results. Thanks again!!
Huge thank you for this video. I just gave my 9 year old a fade based off this tutorial alone and it came out great. I followed your advice to the T and went slow and steady and the result was far beyond my expectations. Great video. 👏🏻 Thank you!
This was an amazing video! My husband was in desperate need (he's in the forces),and it turned out great. I have never cut hair before, and I was able to achieve a nice fade, and did a finger length cut on the top. I was told it was far better then any First Choice haircut he has had! It took me about 30 min total :)
Zack Sleeps you took the words right out of my mouth. Ever since I started going bald about 10 years ago and refused to pay $20 for a haircut anymore, I naturally learned this exact method, to the tee.
Zack Sleeps My friends dont belive i do my own hair either, when they see the shit job i done they think i let my 7 and 8 year old girls go free for all with the clippers 😂
THANK YOU 🙏🏼 for this tutorial! I'm married and have 5 sons! I've been cutting all their hair (poorly) forever! After watching this video I FINALLY gave my first REAL blended haircut! Itlooks soooo much better than I've done before! You gave a super easy explanation on how to start and progress switching guards. The men in my home thank you!
Thanks for this awesome tip. A game changer for me who is self taught, I struggled with blending for so long! Feel so blessed to be able to save my family money every month. God bless!
I've been cutting my boy's hair for over 5 years now but his videos are by far the best and easy to follow. It really helped enhance my skills and confidence. They like their haircuts after. My son gave me loads of kisses after as a "thank you/payment". Thank you and keep up the good work.
@@sarahkernssk There is no proper way to give a fade!!! Yes there's different techniques, to each is their own....But as long as the end result is a fade n the dude is happy with it, that's all that matters!!! A fade is a fade whether I use scissors or watever n u don't use scissors or watever, but in the end we both gave the same exact razor fade with a 2 on top regardless of wat clippers or guards were used or wat step/steps were taken first, I make my line first, n u use a 3 all around first or watever, none of that doesn't matter as long as the result is the proper cut!!! Open and close makes it half longer. So, pull up on 1# guard, it's a 1 1/2.
We dont use long setting as any kind of saying btw
This video has saved us so much money! I cut my husband's hair every few months between barber cuts. I watch this before I give him a cut to remind me how to cut it. I really appreciate you for making this video! Thanks!
You have the perfect technique while remaining simple for the beginner. I really appreciate the way you teach like a beginner would understand very well. Kudos 👌
Sam Bellfoy, much appreciated!

If u go with a 1 right away u cant really fix it because theyre almost practically bald

If anyone has any questions lmk I gotchu
Just wasted 5mins of my life reading that 🤣
@@craigchard1127 You say that yet there's truth and I was looking for this comment. For someone to say start with 3 or 4 guard not one I seen that and said wth.
Btw I am not a cosmetologist.
@@craigchard1127 🤡🤡🤡
Really? If you move the lever you can see it go longer and shorter. It's not rocket science
I’m here after Corona virus outbreak 😢 Ordered clippers today so my wife can cut my hair
Rob Smiff dude same. I’ve had clippers but this will be the first
I’m a woman with a side shave, have always done my own fade. It will be the first time I do my boyfriend’s fade for the same reason this weekend. We got this everyone! 👍
Same here, boyfriend isn't scared but I am
Same. I'm learning how to cut my fiance's hair cuz he's a shaggy shaggy man right now.
Hahah same here 👍 just got my clippers so my wife can cut my hair 💇♂️
After watching this video I was actually able to give my husband a decent haircut! He's back at work today and has been receiving compliments on it whaaaaaat!! Covid is bringing out secret talents :D
This was actually extremely helpful thank you
I'm a barber myself I've started 4 years ago and this is one of the best tips I've heard and seen nice video
I’ve been cutting my boyfriends hair for months. It never came out as good with any other tutorial!! This is the best!
Man I use this technique every time to cut my own hair and it works so well!! I do need 2 mirrors to make sure it’s perfect but hey I’m not having to share a blade with who knows how many people at a barbershop, I don’t need to pay for haircuts either, thanks so much👍👍
3 years after seeing this video I’ve never been to a barber. Only paid $50 for my razor and have cut my hair every two weeks! Best DIY ever
How do you so the back of your hair and the nape of your neck ?
Been cutting my own hair for 5 years now it’s awesome 😎
Any girlfriend/wife watching? Bacause of the curent situation
nookie 173 yes😂. He said i need a tutorial before actually getting the clippers
Mother 😂
I’m a daughter lol
🙋♀️ I cut his hair when we 1st started dating, barber the next day said it wasn't too bad of a job done. Here's round 2, withOUT the alcohol 1st. Oh and it's a bald mid fade 😬 I can do 1 size guard and line up no problem as I used to do my son's. A fade 😳.....we are about to find out 🤞
wife here, watching before i attempt to cut my husbands hair. Scared to death of messing it up.
Ive been following this video to cut my husband’s hair and I go back to it everytime. Thank you!!
I have 5 boys and I'm so tired of spending $100 every month on cuts. Time to start practicing 😬
This time cut their hair yourself. By the time you reach the 5th one you've already mastered it 😉
I had 4 boys never once spent money at a barber. My sis and I got books from the library before internet lol. Went camping and cut away learning how to cut hair.
Great, most of us dont want to cut your kids hair just saying 🤫 dont bring you spoiled brats into the shop
Start with the smallest kid first you want the last to not get severely roasted
The place they got a hair cut must be expensive , can't believe u pay $20 where I live the minimum for I cut has to be £10 or under and i normally get it for £7 but once I'm a adult I have to pay £12
This is the only video i found that i could actually understand and was able to FINALLY cut my husbands hair the way he needs and loves. Thank you ☺️
Sierra Gutierrez, really glad to hear that! My pleasure. Thanks for your comment
Wow. Good to know there's hope. I'm about to start on my grown son - he's that desperate!
Good luck!
This is the best guide on fading after I tried more than 10 other videos in the last two years. Awesome!!!
I just followed your instructions and it saved me 30 bucks! I’m happy with the results! Thanks dude!
Just gave myself a corona fade, took an hour, every room in the house is covered in hair, I have a new found respect for barbers and it looks awful! 💪🏻😂
3 haircuts in our house. Same here, times 3x.
Don’t do like you see on this movie. Do longest first with short taper lever, then 1 clipper number lower with long taper snd then with short setting. Go then to lower number and do exactly the same here. It’s much less risky to fuck anything and much easier to fix if you do.
that is to cute, this might be our house in a few minutes. :)
🤣😂😂
Respect the honesty!! My poor son he’s next on the chopping block!!
grant scott same here🙌
This is awesome and by far the easiest "how to fade" I've come across! I did my husband's fade using this video (during pandemic)...and it came out great!! I will do it again, today. He is so impressed with the results. Thanks again!!
So much easier than the scissor fade I have been doing for my son. And it came out perfectly!
Huge thank you for this video. I just gave my 9 year old a fade based off this tutorial alone and it came out great. I followed your advice to the T and went slow and steady and the result was far beyond my expectations.
Great video. 👏🏻 Thank you!
did you have the clippers wide open when you used the #1 #2 #3 clippers before you blended 🤔
Ive been cutting my husband and son's hair for almost 2 years now because of this tutorial
Me too!
BARBERS HATE HIM! SEE HOW TO CUT YOUR OWN HAIR IN FIVE SIMPLE STEPS!
Or love him cause he's giving everyone confidence in trying it and most want succeed. Then you have to go to a professional to fix it
@@tanaw47 clearly they're making fun of ads...
I've only succeeded to fade my own hair once. Now I just cut it all low lmao.
Lmfaooo
Lol you really think everyone who tries this will succeed??
One of the best tutorials….if not the best and easiest to follow!!! 👍💕Thank you!!!!
This was an amazing video! My husband was in desperate need (he's in the forces),and it turned out great. I have never cut hair before, and I was able to achieve a nice fade, and did a finger length cut on the top. I was told it was far better then any First Choice haircut he has had! It took me about 30 min total :)
Mine is too 🤣 watching it because we were late coming back for leave. Wish me luck 🤣
I’ve never cut hair and with your help I cut my husband’s hair and it looks great! Thank you for making this video simple to understand.
Chrisvely Urbanski, really glad to hear that! Thanks for your comment. Be sure to share :)
Exactly what I was looking for. U explain everything perfectly.
You are an absolute legend.
YOU KEEP EVERYTHING SIMPLE.
Simple is certainly the best.
I've been cutting my own hair for years and this is exactly how I do it! My friends literally don't believe me, lol - Cool to see a vid
Zack Sleeps, that's funny, glad to hear that!

The comment I was looking for, thank you.
Real me to thank you so much
I did my partner's hair and then my 5 year old after watching this video. Making an amateur look like a pro. Thank you, Great tips!
Dana Brown, glad to hear! Thanks for sharing
Day 90 of quarantine: I don’t know if it’s desperation or confidence but I feel like I can do this on myself..
How’d it go cause I’m about to try lol
@@Danieldpineda It seems easy until you try :D looking in the mirror and trying to cut confuses your brain so badly lol
Day god knows what of lockdown, I too am now at this point.....my confidence is high ish
I had the same thing last year : desperation shifts to confidence...and it worked
who else is here cuz they convinced their boyfriend to let you give him a haircut LOL
I’ve been using this tutorial for over a year now and my husband loves his hair every time. Thank you!
Thanks for this awesome tip. A game changer for me who is self taught, I struggled with blending for so long! Feel so blessed to be able to save my family money every month. God bless!
Just tried this method on my 7 year olds hair. It’s my 2nd time in cutting and the fade is 1000 times better. Thanks
Omg best tutorial I've found!! Just did this haircut on my husband and it looks great 😀
This has been the best fade video i have seen. Easiest to follow. Good work!
Pablo Barrientos, I really appreciate that, thanks!
I've been cutting my boy's hair for over 5 years now but his videos are by far the best and easy to follow.
It really helped enhance my skills and confidence. They like their haircuts after. My son gave me loads of kisses after as a "thank you/payment".
Thank you and keep up the good work.
MY boyfriend is going to kill me there is no way I will be successful LOL
Good luck girl we gotta learn we in this together if it dont come out they got another month to grow it 🤞
Honestly same🤣
Practice makes perfect!
Wtf why would a women need to Fade her hair
Brian OConner cutting my boyfriends hair as if that wasn’t clear
wow I went to cosmetology school an tried so hard to remember how to fade and always forget, thank God for this video everything makes sense to me now
Ari Juarbe, very glad to hear that! Be sure to share
U have balls to admit u went to cosmetology school lmao 😂
Scary mental
You went to cosmo school and they didn’t teach you that this is the improper way to fade?
@@sarahkernssk There is no proper way to give a fade!!! Yes there's different techniques, to each is their own....But as long as the end result is a fade n the dude is happy with it, that's all that matters!!! A fade is a fade whether I use scissors or watever n u don't use scissors or watever, but in the end we both gave the same exact razor fade with a 2 on top regardless of wat clippers or guards were used or wat step/steps were taken first, I make my line first, n u use a 3 all around first or watever, none of that doesn't matter as long as the result is the proper cut!!! That's wat needs to be proper and is proper!!!!! Cuz there is not jus 1 proper way to give a fade ya digg🤬🤬🤬🤬
Quick simple and straight to the point, best explanation for fading! Thanks for this video!
I watch this video every time I cut my sons hair. Great job on explaining everything!
For some reason it's reassuring to keep re-watching while doing the haircuts.
Thanks, very helpful. I am currently in barber school and fades are tuff for me.

alphacharlie65ms fades are the hardest thing in barbering to learn I'm still trying to learn them they take time mate I'm a barber with 18 months roughly I've picked up everything only thing I carnt do is fade which nowdays you must learn but I'll get there I've come so far in 18 months 💇👍
Lee Hollebon freaking easy my dude! I'm 15 and already cutting my friends hair for free! I guess some people understand it faster than others
alphacharlie65ms tough

I've been a Barber 32 years and you are the ONLY person I've seen on here doing it the easiest, fastest and the most correct way! Lol Great job!! Now shave the neck with a straight razor to seal the deal and you're an official old school master! MLAR 🤘
Bruh if u been a barber for 32 years and u think this is the most correct way I don't want to see what kind of barber u are
Thank you so much! I've been trying to find ways to fade my hair without it going too of course of some other random hairstyle. Everything worked like a charm!
Great video - I have used this before cutting my hair in the mirror a few times, and this technique works perfectly every time - thank you for making this!
