@@dcfolyffe882 Smart! The funny thing, just as he mentions in the video, you do start to get a feel for the awkward positions - like clipping the back of your neck. Its weird the first few times. Just cut my hair 3 days ago again. I have a routine now where I grab newspapers and drape them over the sink in the bathroom to speed up the clean up. The key part is blending the clipped sides and back with the top cut part. Small cuts/trim is a smart way to go at first. 👍

Best tutorial ever! For people who want to try this but are scared of messing up. This is what worked for me : Go to your barber first, get a good haircut. After that use the tips in this video to touch up your already good hair cut every few days. It makes it A LOT easier and less scary, and after a while you'll get the hang of it and it gets much easier. I'm rocking the same haircut I walked out the barbershop with 3 months ago.

GREAT video! I’m an older guy (63) and started cutting my own hair over 30 years ago. All my friends thought I was nuts even giving it a try. I used the same method you use but at first I didn’t use the progressively smaller guards - I think I just used a 5 and then trimmed around my ears and lower back. It took me a few months to feel comfortable, and eventually stopped using the mirror when doing the back. You are so right about getting the feel for doing this. It becomes very comfortable just like you said. Cutting your own hair not only saves you money, but a lot of time as well! And you can tidy up anytime. I’ve tried to get my son to do it but he won’t even give it a try. By the dude, you got some great hair there!

This is the best beginners' hair cutting tutorial on YT, and I've been through hundreds. He starts with a #4 straight up to blend the top, which anyone can do, and then slowly transitions down to a #1. My barber does the same. It is hard to mess up #2-4 since no skin is visible, just be careful with the smaller guards. Most other tutorials here have you starting from a bald line and working up, or playing with the taper lever 4-5 times during the fade (half way open, 3/4 open, etc.), or something else ridiculous.

Once you can do it yourself, your standards regarding your own hairstyle/grooming rise. I used to think it was normal to have the back shaped only when I get a haircut every 2 months. But now, I do it myself quite often, with the 'new' look available all the time. The standards have risen.

good instructions. his emphasis on taking time is very important, especially when doing the final touches at the end. He emphasized that the direction in the mirror is opposite but keep that in mind when you are aligning the clipper head to match the hairline. on my first trim, i aligned and trimmed at the same time. problem was that as i rotated, it went in the opposite direction so i had to do it over.

Just gave myself a 2nd haircut using this method and I--NAILED IT! To further assist your success, I would recommend viewing some images of what you're looking for and then just trying to duplicate that look. I'm 63, with an appropriate receding hairline, and this method helped me nearly duplicate a style that's both "old school" and stylish. Choppy. Short. Tapered. Blended. I've already gotten a few compliments. Go figure--all these years I could have/should have been cutting my own hair. I'd agree with most who suggest, and does TFC, TAKE YOUR TIME! The 40-50 minutes will be well worth it, and the 2nd time around it does, indeed, get a bit easier relative to mirror images, cutting lines and, most importantly, when using them scissors to snip the top to desired length.

Great video! Excellent haircut! That's basically the way I cut my own hair. I've been doing it since the late 1970s. I figure I've saved at least $15,000.00 in today's dollars (figuring on a haircut every 3 weeks). I began cutting my own hair because I usually had to trim up a bit after getting a haircut. Finally, I said, "Why am I paying somebody to cut my hair when I have to cut it afterwards anyway." So, I haven't visited a barber since the early 1980s.

Another way I save money is when shaving. I use Dawn dishwashing/hand soap liquid, which is oily enough to give a smooth shave. Thank you bro!!! I started doing this due to Fn covid. And this has worked out SOOO much better than ANY barber ive ever had! i swear to God! TRUTH! my wife, her mother and all 3 of her sisters were all totally impressed. And these women would have NO problem telln me if it looked bad! Dude... i never really liked having to go get a hair cut EVER! if im honest plus its just another expense. But NOW!? not anymore. AND, might sound stupid, but, its been a self confidence booster too. I never thought i could something like this? Wrong! of course i could thanks to you. So again. Many thanks and God bless.

Quarantine first haircut I was nervous and took my sweet time. Almost an hour lol. By the time I trimmed the neck the clippers were way hot 😆 Third self haircut this weekend and getting easier. Thanks for posting!

yeah same here, I wonder what would be the solution for clippers running hot. Taking a break or maybe getting some better quality clippers? I got a $20 WAHL clipper from the store Ross.

@@arturotorres6437 I got the Wahl too. Well oiled. I heard to turn them off frequently while adjusting mirror etc.

The idea of tailoring near the sideburns using 1 mm less was a brilliant one. Very helpful, thank you. Also using your hand and feel how much shorter you want em to be on top was eye-opening.

Mate, thanks so much for this tutorial, you legend. Never going to a hairdresser again, super pleased with the results; some advice to people doing this for the first time - start with a high number like a 6. It’s really hard to go wrong and it looks fine as a 6 anyway - it’s actually a good level of shortness.

Can i ask, how bad was your first haircut? taking into consideration it was your first time without any practice. Do you think i could do this and turn up in the office without anyone noticing?¿

Finally, a self haircut tutorial that starts long then goes shorter on the sides and back. Gives a beginner more confidence.

Thank you for sharing! I’ve cut hair for the men in my house a couple times since lockdown. It came out ok but could be better. They’ve asked me again so the pressure is on. I found your video and it answers so many questions I’ve had, especially the whole open/closed thing. I’m feeling confident for my next round. So glad I found your instructions. You Rock man.
