- The Works - Tony Wilson interviews Ian Brown pt1. The interview itself is already on UA-cam, but I figured it was still worth uploading the whole programme for which it was filmed. Enjoy.
See my other videos for part 2 of this programme.
So beautifully, Northern. Utterly unaware of their supreme talent. This is what Tony loved, I think.
In America, 1989, I heard "I wanna be adored" on "college radio" while at work. I was 18 years old and it stopped me in my tracks. If I was high I think I would have jumped thru a window. Still a great band.
What is the best jumping through window music?
@@Surv1ve_Thrive no music can top the feeling of being locked in a bedroom to go cold turkey, with just a window to escape. That's how you jump through a window with style
Tony Wilson ... Unsung hero !! Much respect
I mean he's definitely a hero but I don't know if he is unsung, not everyone has a movie about themselves
Yeah they should make a movie about him, they could get a multiple BAFTA award winning actor to play him, someone like Steve Coogan for example. They could call it something like, I dunno 24 Hour Party People.
@@RighteousBrother wasn’t that a movie about Shaun Ryder’s UFO experience?
Without the record player to put the records on there’s no music. Tony is the record player feel myself filling up I’ve lived in Manchester nearly 50 years and this band made the run down area worth walking about again ... Walkman shit headphones orange sponges size of car tyres and flares to fit your shoplifting in lol miss the freedom
@@stuartralph2212 no, it was a film about factory records and most of what was associated with the company, ie, the clubs, the bands, the band members and the people surrounding the record label. If you are being sarcastic in your comment and you knew this then I apologise for stating the obvious, if you wasn’t then you should pay more attention to what you’re watching and take in all the information given to you via the film and process it a bit better, this would give you a better understanding about the film
2 great people.. IAN BROWN THE LEGEND, and the late TONY WILSON
" a champion of grounded music" rip.
Classic Interview, thanks Ian, you are a true legend xxx
You can feel the respect for Tony from Ian in this. Can't say I've seen any other interviews where Ian looks remotely as involved
like that he said "i dont want to form another band cos ill never get another band as good as this" what a legend i met him and got ians autograph in 2004 and ive fucking lost it.. FML :(
Tony Wilson was a visionary and a hero. Fair play. Credit due. The Roses though.... on that other side of midnight show. If you could bottle that.... its just obvious their time had come... they look and sound incredible. They knew it. So different. So ready. Its effortless, not forced or contrived. There is no media machine driving it. It had to happen. Glorious.
Tony Wilson was desperate to sign "The Stone Roses" to "Factory Records" back then...
loved Tony's speaking voice too.
I have listened to this talismanic figure for 30 years. He is the absolute last word,as far as i am concerned. Ian Brown is the mountain top to which all true sherpas aspire #timeless #secondtonone #forgeteverythingandremember.

There wouldnt have been no madchester without Tony Wilson.RIP.Mr Brown, show some respect
Word.
Disrespect for your elders is part of rock n’ roll.
@Neil Hodge really Neil and how many songs did he compose, sing or produce? It's a bit like saying without Brian Epstein there would have been no Beatles.
@@revol148 without him there wouldn't be a manchester scene, he was the catalyst
How is Ian disrespecting him ?..
My thumbs up for Tony Wilson so sincere and caring about the musical art form he loved so much and the way it could shape dreams of youth that he had to pretend to be a wanker. RIP Mr Madchester.
Tony Wilson was great in many ways. He was early to spot the sparks that set the world alight.
Proper relaxed interview with Anthony H....RIP Tony !...Still on the scene Brownie lad !
im not one of those big artists like bowie "i shouldnt be ere " BUT I AM !!
Love and miss you Tony 🙏
"He's the face that launched a thousand haircuts"...
I'm dying 😂😂😂 well said sir, much love & respect to Ian Brown.
Some people make money and some people make history
His smile will never change :D X
"when you're 14 the Pistols are everything" so fucking true
Well, I was 30 in '77, but they were still everything to me.
Absolute star
Tony Wilson hated the roses when they were trying to get a break ! They had to play outside Manchester couldn’t get a gig - props to Wilson to admitting he was wrong
That's not quite true. He turned them down- when they were still a punky goth band- but he didn't impede their career any.
I think he also had a grudge against the roses manager - so made sure they didn’t get bookings
God to Tony Wilson: "But you were right about Mick Hucknell, his music's rubbish and he's a ginger".
@Tom Prince even more ironic when you think of all the bands Factory signed (Revenge for example) which were atrocious - and the ones he did sign were milked of all their worth in order to bankroll his loss-making night club !
He wasn't just wrong he was a twat
My girlfriend and I went on the Friday actually, which we had tickets for... and it was amazing. But yeah, on the Saturday we returned to the park and sat on a hill with a view of half the stage and one of the two big screens... I did hear Liam dedicate it to Brownie. Cheers.
Tony Wilson was a loose cannon himself and an absolute northern hero. It's only "loose cannons" that push the boundaries. We love you, Tone. RIP Mr Manchester. Recently visited his grave in Manchester where Martin Hannett is also buried to pay my respects.
So this where Liam Gallagher got his personality from..he must have sat for ages watching Ian's interviews!
Ian is a lot more softly spoken and composed than Liam and he’s more articulate
Tony introduced Joy Division. that vibe, that music is alive for 40+ years trough all the brit pop, house, techno, grunge even. Prodigy!
I taped all his programmes on Granada tv. Not video but used cassette recorder.
May you shine forever 🌟
I've got a mate who said I went back to the studio with Ian Brown and we was making tunes and smoking blunts and we was like yeh right yer dick course you did. He just took the shit and 5 month later he said oh I got those pics done from that night of me and Ian that night in the studio and when we saw them we was like fuck lol - I can send proof as well as I still have a copy of the best pic.
Tony Wilson was the best.
Tony Wilson standing in Runcorn and speaking about Spike Island Widnes, who’d of thought it ahaha
The intro with Tony Wilson is very much in the style of Alan Partridge or Richard Madeley. 😂
Coogan wasn't fit to lick Tony Wilson's boots. Still isn't.
Ian, you're every inch as big an artist as the likes of Bowie... don't put yourself down, mate. You're a rock and roll star!
Bigger than Bowie!!!! Now thats over the top 😳
As big as Bowie, he said not, bigger than... Read it properly
I really love the intro!!!!!!!!!!
Some people just have “IT”... very few..
This must have been recorded when "Music of the Spheres" came out in 2001...
Yeah that sounds right . I have a dvd single with this interview on it released around the time of whispers I think
Music Of The Spheres is outstanding. Shadow Of. A Saint is the perfect finale. The Greatest is definitive Ian Brown.
Interesting choice of backdrop for Mr Brown.
He's already in him.
Tony on his deathbed according to what hooky said that Tony totally regreted not signing The Smiths and The Stone Roses. Gotta say though I really enjoy Ian Browns solo stuff!
got signed photo of him when I wrote to Granada TV.
Ian or, Tony ?..
Brownie is way more down to earth here than in his 89-90 heyday
Not stoned
it's not the same still without Tony. I didn't know him but he's missed.
Right on Nice One matey....R.I.P Tony. x
Nobody needed to "know" Mr. Manchester himself to love what he gave the world
My teenage years, initially focused on New Order, then JD... then... the rest of all the Manchester greats 1987 to 1993. The nostalgia. Amazing.
Even across the pond.
beautiful ian
I got his autograph at a football game he was playing in at Liverpool once. He can write it in Russian as well.
That's from the Steve Coogan episode of the same series. You can see that in my other videos, it's well worth a watch.
Ian Brown is such an interesting character, very talented and charismatic but without being big headed. I have been listening to a lot of his stuff recently. F.E.A.R remains one of the best songs of the last 20 years. Stellify and First World Problems being my other faves. As a fellow Pisces I think he is complex and brutally honest yet remains true to himself. Top bloke!
I met him at an Audioweb gig in Liverpool Uni in the mid 90's. He was approachable and spent a good half hour in our company. There were only about 30 people at the gig and Ian was one of them. Yes, First World Problems is a fine tune.
@@strumbolli Ah, that's so cool! :))
Yes F.E.A.R. is superb song and the lyrics are just brilliant, what an intelligent song..from a talented guy!
@@kenpudsey6435 It certainly is, Ken. The world needs more thoughtful people...I miss a good convo. YT is my only lifeline for that x
@@katewolfspirit6722 Much agreed Kate💯
For a man that was as well read/educated as Anthony H. he didn't half use that Hunter S. Thompson quote a hell of a lot!
grizcuz for a man who was overjoyed by chemical indulgence and chaos its only natural he would quote Thompson, who was a natural at that.
did you go heaton park on the saturday? liam gallagher dedicated "oasis- Rock and Roll Star" to Brownie
Tony had vision
Steve Coogan at about 2 second into the video
Effortlessly Cool...
Nobody has ever said Ian sings like an angel.
Tony!
Scouser , this is good RIP tony , Ian I remember our smoke and chat Keswick 90😉
I stood on that hill and I can just see a load of Barrat homes and a muddy island.
where are they being interviewed. skull - candles - fire crackling sounds ... - explaination?!?
I thought that too - goat skulls and ceremonial shit! Don't tell me that's ian's gaff!
Ian brown is godlike V99
But shouldn't you thank Freddy Talbot? We all liked Fred. He turned on the Southport Christmas lights, one yearz in the early nineties. Very funny weatherman... har har.
Funny thing is, Brownie didn't have that ridiculous accent back in the day.
Apparently his voice issues were due to Squire’s amps. That must be it.
Funny how other singers in bands with more than one guitarist don’t really struggle ….
Double good.
Where is the smoke going in that room?
What's wrong with this old guy he's on me case!!!
not sure about influential, more influencED.
you can see the smiths in there and morrisey’s on stage persona.
the idea of bringing acid house into mainstream with a band? hmm we already had that with sgt pepper.
using dance rhythms in rock? well we already had that with the likes of new order and depeche mode.
the attitude and message? we had that with the jam and pistols
good band deffo but not sure the ott lauding as the most influential band of recent years is justified.
He can be here to
He's slating his vocals and what was Ryder? Fucking Pavarotti! Big Mondays and Roses fan by the way!
Tony never liked the roses hypocrisy at its best
oh geno
🎶🎵👍🏼
Was this in 2001?
Yes
Claim to fame i slept with manny and browny ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,great times scootering
What ?!
24hr party people
Is that geezer at 3.04 the twin of some geezer in eastenders
that's a full on warrington accent
Shaun Clutt very true he's got a manc/scouse mix that slight laziness but sharpness of word type of tone .I'm Warrington and notice it in quite a few locals
warrington doesnt have an accent they either try and sound like mancs or scousers bunch of bell ends get ur own identity
Shaun Maguire warrington is half n half scouse/manc due to the overspill in the 1970s /80s
ye so whts ur point its still cringy when ppl from warrington try and talk like liam gallagher same as when lads from widnes try talk like theyre from toxteth wasnt the legendary pete postlethwaite a warrington lad? he never put on a faux manc/scouse accent
Shaun Maguire who gives a fuck anyway what our accents like no one seems to be arsed anyway only you
Did I hear that right he just said drugs and children
Steve coogan did a great protrayal
Loose cannon lol I got my pirate 🚢 ⚓
Is that Steve Coogan? 0:03
Yes. He was also covered in the same series, both parts of that episode are in my other videos. Pt1: ua-cam.com/video/LhAvotfRACw/v-deo.html
He reminds me of Robbie Williams when he was young
Yeah, who can understand that Altrincham, pretend Manc accent?
Ian wanted to be a door...
2024 & Ian Brown still The Man, the real deal in a world of fakery, Respect to our Northern Hero the likes of which you won't see again, BossMan Brownie ✌🙏😎
No airs or attitude with brown
Nigel Kerr 2:05 is the guy who possibly ruined The Stone Roses? Greedy and controlling especially over the second album.
Discuss?!
Ii WormHolT GeeZerGod
Apex Brown... all downhill after this, sadly.
wdym apex brown
I wouldn't exactly say that...
I couldn’t stand Tony Wilson. He was such a pretentious creep.
He really can't sing lol.
