This reminded me of old school WTA - the era of Serena, Henin, Clijsters, Venus, Seles, Capriati etc. Big hitting, great movement, gutsy returns and fighting until the very end. This current crop of inconsistent players could never. Brava to both Penko and Kvitova. What a fight. Both ladies should be proud for putting on such a fantastic show.

I agree but would have liked to have seen more holds of serve in the end instead of back and forth breaks of serve
Nothing is wrong with rallies, for a spectator it's more enjoyable to watch the intense rallies rather than a serve and return winner, basically everytime

True, but my issue with Ostapenko is her unforced error count is too high per game. When she hits a winner it's good, but sometimes you dnt need to go for every shot full force. If she had better control she would be amazing. It's frustrating watching her play sometimes.

Watching this without knowing who the winner was beforehand got me on the edge of my seat. Both of them are such heavy ball strikers , it was tough to figure who was gonna win in the third set tiebreak, and in the end Ostapenko was just a little bit stronger this time. Could this be the start of the resurgence of the FO champion?

Me too. I watched set one, was worried Ostapenko would lose set two because she was down so i was like "oh well", then looked 15 minutes later and Ostapenko won set two and was leading set three. I stopped watching i the third at like 3-2 Ostapenko but i just knew it wasnt over yet. Didnt really havd faith i her to win, but she surprised me.

Her serve actually improved a bit so isn’t as bad as was and that shows clearly she is working on it! That comment was a bit last year comment 🤦🏽♂️

This match was pure joy to watch. Honestly, both Kvitova and Ostapenko deserved to win it. It's known that both of them have such amazing tennis capabilities and the fact that they´re both getting far on tournaments is just very reassuring. @@longinusgalaxy411 She already is a dangerous player. Her game reminds me of Russian Elena Dementieva's game. She had a solid Forehand and Backhand to go along with Good Movement. The only weakness was the Serve. Ostapenko reminds me so much of her in this respect.

I hope people realize how incredibly powerful are Ostapenko’s shots. Her balls travel the court faster than most man on the ATP. She doesnt look like she is bashing the ball because she is not. Its all about her technique and the way she hits the ball naturally. She generates so much power. She hits it mostly flat too so thats makes the ball travel even faster. Just look at the speed of the ball from the time she hits it until it lands on the other side, its a rocket. Incredibly difficult to be consistent thats for sure, hence her results, but if lands in, yep, its a freakin’ rocket.
She has powerful shots indeed. But obviously not as powerful as men. But don't need to compare to the male tennis.
@@btc175 yes im comparing and yes I repeat, her balls are faster than most man on the ATP. Just look at the speed her balls come off her racquet and travel the court to the other side. Its flat and incredibly fast.
Agree, her power is effortless, almost miraculous, and that ball travels extremely fast. Most men hit hard but with a lot of spin and their ball does not travel as fast as Ostapenko's. She also seemed to have found the mental balance she was missing in the past.
@@sorellman she is still not consistent enough. I mean she can beat a top 10 player 6-0,6-0 and the next day lose to the 200th rank player committing 70 unforced errors. Lets face it if she was consistent she would be top 5. Her game is super impressive but unfortunately she doesn’t have a plan B and she doesn’t know when to dial it down. That being said when she is on, like really on, watch out she could beat a top 5 player 6-0, 6-0.

Two of the biggest ball strikers on tour. This was a fantastic match on both sides. This match was on Kvitova's racquet though. Twice serving for the match and getting broken. Ostapenko stayed tough though and both were aggressive but consistent. Definitely on of the best matches of the year I've seen thusfar. Happy that Petra is back
Ostapenko is getting confidence and concentration is getting better. One thing everyone has to respect is she will always go for her shots no matter how much pressure. 🎾🎾🎾👍👍👍👍

Absolutely amazing comeback!! That was Sharapova-esque!!! I remember Maria and Petra used to go head to head with first strike offense, just whacking the fuzz off the ball relentlessly and Petra was always just more talented but Maria had the mental power and daring shots to will herself to win in the end no matter what. That was like this.
Please yeah with the help of her energy pills she would take after the second set to give herself extra energy to go the distance so this was solely will power

@@bluemountain3779 don't get me wrong, I'm absolutely not defending Maria HOWEVER majority of elite athletes, in every single sport, are doing whatever they can to outdo their competition. and taking "legal" PEDs is one of the strategies. At least Maria didn't lie and say "oh this was my mother's meldonium and it fell on my blini". We all saw those leaked WADA documents and how many banned drugs were permitted for Williams' sisters for example.

This match should have been the final. This match is truly one of the best matches of the year. Both showed great skill level and great performance. Petra Kvitova too was super amazing. The way how she was able to keep up with Ostapenko's pace and strength is amazing. I sincerely hope, that Kvitova once more returns to top 10. Both played brilliant. Both in this match showed why they are Grand Slam champions. They both showed Grand Slam champion level performance today. Both matched one another point for point. What a match. Congratulations Jelena Ostapenko for this win. Now Jelena Ostapenko has defeated one grand slam champion from each surface. She defeated former Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin (Australian Open happens on outdoor hard courts) former French Open champion Iga Swiatek (French Open/Roland Garos happens on clay courts) and former two time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova (Wimbledon happens on grass courts). Amazing win. And this is back to back Semi-Final appearance for Jelena Ostapenko. On top of that she will be ranked at least as world #16 in women's singles now. What an amazing effort from Ostapenko. in the second set she came back from the dead and literally stole the second set from Kvitova. In the third set too she did the same. Simply sensational. Ostapenko is simply amazing tennis player. This might the season where Ostapenko does her second breakthrough.

A great match up for both players. They both like hard hitting opponents that hit consistently with topspin. Unfortunately for Jelena, this could of been a watershed moment where she finally fixed that awful second serve, but she has won, so she'll probably carry on with it now.

Like most Ostapenko matches. Three random sets the outcomes of which are determined by whether she is lucky enough that her shots land in or unlucky enough that they sail out or into the net. The only thing consistent about her is the inconsistency of her results.
That might change now whem she reach 4 semi in her last 07 tournament, that's a good sign for her
