Ostapenko is firing on all cylinders. This is the form that carried her to the French Open title all those years ago.
Paradoxically Ostapenko's game is better suited for fast surfaces where the points are shorter.

She had a pretty god run run in 2017, with two semis and a final in that year leading up to the French. After that she had two semis and a final, which she won, the rest of the year. But she has been playing very good tennis this time for almost a year now, starting with winning a Wimbledon prep event in 2021 and then really turned things up last fall and now into 2022.

The level of tennis Ostapenko is playing is unbelievable.
Not really. Osty's been playing lights-out tennis for years. Her game is much more refined and accurate now. Just crazy power precision.
When she plays like that, Ostapenko is the most exciting player in women's tennis. The ball just accelerates off her racket to all corners of the court again and again and again.
Yesterday she made only 5 U.E vs Krejicova and about 30 Winners. Cleanest match I ever saw her play. .

Ostapenko is playing world #1 tennis at the moment. Even Barty would have trouble keeping up with the pace. This is Ostapenko of 2017 when she had the 5th fastest average forehand speed at the french open including the mens draw.

I’ve been watching ostapenko’s matches closely even during her inconsistent form in the previous seasons. What I notice is that she’s definitely playing smarter and not going too all out in those longer rallies.
She knows she’s capable of big ground strikes and hard flat shots, so going deep rather than always going for the lines makes her stay in the rally but also pushes her opponents, and puts less power in those great angles. These shots more often than not will always generate short balls from opponents and then she’ll do what she loves - to hit the winner. It’s great to see this confidence in her as she is gunning those returns and winners.
She’s grown a lot, and even if she loses a set, she can always rely on this consistency tactic to carry her through the three sets (like her matches in Dubai). I really hope she starts getting to those Semis and finals in majors. This is exciting to watch.
Can't believe Ostapenko fights so hard that she has won all the matches recently. She is like a baby doll. So cute. Congrats.

Mugu’s biggest weaknesses are variety and speed. She also kept on hitting to the centre of the court while ostapenko’s returns often had more angles than hers.

What bad attitude? All she does is talk to herself for a few seconds and look at her box when she makes a Silly Unforced Error.
Are you kidding, Jeff? Watch some women's tennis vids with 'drama' in the title and she's in most of them. Arguing with umps, throwing her racket (once at a ballboy) salty handshakes when she loses, etc etc

It's great to see Garbiñe made it to the QF's, and honestly, very few players in this era of WTA tennis can counter Jelena when she's playing like this. I wouldn't be surprised if she takes multiple GS's this season if she keeps this level of play up.
Multiple GS's? I wouldn't go that far. She's having a great run of form but I don't think she can maintain it during Majors when everyone else is just as hungry.

@@Grateful1118 Barty didn't have to face a top 20 Opponent in 2022 A.O. at the 2019 F.O 6/7 players she faced were unseeded and one seeded at #14. In her Wimbledon win she faced only one top ten player. In the three Slams she won she only played one too ten Player!
Ostapenko is a very smart player. She knows her strength and she uses it to the max. She knows her weaknesses are so she aims her balls so well that the opponents have to run left to right, right to left while she just maintains at the same spot throwing punches upon punches. Simply brilliant strategy. She will potentially lose points if she has to do a lot of court covering. Put aside her attitude, she is one tough cookie to beat this year! Excellent performance thus far!

Jelena is far from being my favourite personality on tour. She is brash and loud, and at time downright rude to players and personnel alike.
That said, I have to give credit where it is due. She is on fire recently. Some exquisite shotmaking over the past couple of weeks, and making it look easy too. With this type of play consistently, we could see her up in the mix a lot more often.
Your second sentence should be Mug -she is the rude one. Many players mention it and it's frequently on display at the net when she loses. Last match she los, t she was rude to Veronika Kudemetova . Just plain arrogant and nasty . It is so satisfying when she loses. Hope she eats some humble pie tonight. Her win at the end of the season is meaningless when more than half of the talent was sitting it out

Contrary to the announcer, Penko is not just about 'destructive power'. She's a very intelligent player who finds angles that other players cannot (or refuse to) play. Muguruza refused to move her feet, refused to chase balls, and had this very nonchalant attitude as if she didn't want to win. Muguruza lacked drive and fighting spirit, and fell to an opponent who was hungrier and who played more intelligent tennis.
Everyone plays more intelligently than Muguluza. But yes you are right she doesn’t bother to chase down balls I don’t know if it’s laziness or arrogance maybe both?

Muguruza don’t strike the ball as hard as she did in 2014-2017 when she was beating Serena. She’s more passive with her shots and lots of spin on the balls.
IMO she also had that form at the beginning of 2021, but later she faded again
