I've started a new hobby in 2024: learning how to play bass guitar. Loving it. There is so much more in life than just work. You work so you can live and have money for the things that fills your soul with joy.

It's funny because I started embracing the "simple life," "more with less" lifestyle first, and then fell in love with the Netherlands after visiting and seeing how much it aligns with who I am. So, I can definitely see you picking up those habits out there. I'll be moving to Rotterdam soon, from St. Louis, Missouri. Before St. Louis, I lived in downtown Chicago! Look at all these dots connecting lol.
@@ItzSKYVlogs Yep, thanks! I'm headed to Rotterdam around September 2025. I've visited NL a few times and decided Rotterdam is where I want to be. I lived in Chicago for 2 years. I would've stayed longer but I arrived there (from San Diego, CA) literally 1 month before COVID started. For 2 years, all I could really do was walk around and stare at nice buildings and closed businesses. Beautiful city but my timing was unfortunate. I'm like you. I'm a techy (I'm a software developer by trade), so I love spending on my tech gadgets. Outside of that, though, I'm not flashy. I wear the same types of clothes daily and prefer simplicity and efficiency in all things. NL hits that nail on the head for me. Can't wait to get there.
Jaywalking doesn't exist in The Netherlands. There is no law against crossing the street wherever you want. There are laws around endangering or hindering the flow of traffic, but you don't have to use designated crossings.

I think complaining needs to happen more often throughout the world, you see if you complain you make things happen. If you don't complain everything stays the same. And who would want to never change?
It's mostly about not letting standards slip. People who mess up will often point out that things have even got more worse in Germany or are still worse in some developping country, but we should keep complaining when government or other institutions or companies let things become worse.
I always say to my family in US, "You need to complain more. Get others to complain too to get things changed". But, not going to happen. We are way to lazy in US to even bother to complain, so things stay the same, thus way behind the rest of the world.

I live in Haarlem but was born in Rotterdam, so I love seeing you film in front of the iconic buildings like the Breuer Bijenkorf and the Wereldhandelsgebouw. The complaining about the weather thing is something that bonds the Dutch. It's like, everyone has their own shit but at the same time everyone has to deal with the weather. So the moment you complain about the weather everyone is onboard instantly as everyone always agrees that the weather sucks. It's sort of like a perpetual common ground and if we start from a place where everyone is in agreement, can figure something out.
These last years I had 3 refugees from ukraine in our house. The first thing i thought them was to complain about the weather, tu cold, to hot, to much rain, to much sun. The second thing was most Dutch people do not like to waste food, so, one cookie with your coffee! And cook enough, not to much.
Also, I wonder if your taste buds have changed given the quality of the food in the Netherlands. I watch a lot of expats living in the Netherlands and other European countries and the quality of food and the stronger flavors seems to be a common theme. Maybe your taste buds have woken up from having been deadened by added sugar, salt, artificial flavors and preservatives growing up in the US.
