Umbrella etiquette. When not in use, u want your hands free, and u got a backpack on. Hang the umbrella on the strap of your backpack right under your armpit. Hangs there not in the way of your movement 👌
I love the Dutch weather.. I love the changing of the seasons. And the rain? Yep, love that too. It makes this country green and clean and nothing is better then the smell of the air after the rain.
Winter starts at the twenty first of December so it’s fall but chilly. Last Friday I was cycling to Breda about twenty kilometres and have had four seasons in one day, sunrise was sunny, departure and five minutes in it began snowing that later turned to rain, between offices it was dry and rainy again when leaving Breda. Stopped at a Lidl Supermarket and then when I left there it was hailing hard with thunder. I didn’t mind the Dutch weather’s but such a day I was exhausted and went to that supermarket just to score a simple effortless evening meal. Better this weather than plus thirty degrees Celsius. The harsh people in winter I don’t recognise, Wednesday I’ve even opened up my house for the mailman who took shelter between houses at my neighbours but he didn’t accepted. Just doing his job. Between Christmas and new year’s are so little workdays that it’s so easy to take up leave days and just a few jobs can’t afford to being at work. Was expecting Sinterklaas and Christmas of course when beginning about the holiday season, maybe how black Pete is changed now if your sons celebrate it on their own way… and of course the vote next Friday for the Pop 2000.
If you open your windows daily for at least 20 minutes, the humidity percentage drops. Yes even when it rains. This will result in a warmer climate in your house in winters. It’s not much but it helps heating your house quicker and at lower cost.
oke , weird everyone is heating and losing humidity , opening it resurply's the humidity ... else the airsysteems we build would not do anything! i work in the air buzzniss
Thats not how it works, if you open your windows when its more humid outside, the humidity comes INSIDE. That is why it becomes more warmer in your house, because its more humid.
Buy a small umbrella that folds out to a medium umbrella and folds in to a small umbrella again when you don't use it. Put the cover on it and carry it in your backpack ! 🙂

I think the whole holidays vacation thing is also because we have two days off already. Three more days and you have the entire week. And because a lot of people are off, it's quieter in terms of work anyway so you don't need as many people leading to more people being able to take time off. As for the weather, you're becoming a real dutchie alright :) We will moan about any weather every damn opportunity.
I have had colleagues who took the week before X-mas off and then X-mas and newyear and then the first two weeks of the new year with next years PTO. So four weeks vacation for the price of like three with all the mandatory holidays.
Welcome to the dutch Autumn weather. Well I come from a small tropical Island of the South Pacific and since I have been here in the Netherlands for about quadrennial of time, I too love the Autumn and the winter here. It creates a vibe of what the dutch call it "LEKKER GEZELLIG "! 😊🤗🌷 Happy Thanksgiving ! 🦃
I always liked working between Christmas and the new year. The quiet time in the office is nice, there would be just some others fools like me and we would talk, eat cookies and work a bit on this and that. Keep everything floating.
1:53 Hearing this, i think I wrote that, as I remember writing such comment. But there are definately some other wise ones here (as I am not the only, lol). Loving the fresh air, and yeah dude, good new customs!!
There's only one thing that I like about the winter, and that is that it ends. I hate the cold and wet weather, and the fact that everyone forgets how to drive a car when it starts raining or snowing...
Yesterday the garbage pickup came for the green containers (garden and kitchen waste); so today I rinsed it out and left it in the sun to dry as it was a bright sunny day, and then out of nowhere it rained really hard for just 10 minutes before the sun came out again. Container drenched once again!
The change in the weather can be insane here. We had a few days when it was just above the freezing point (3-4 degrees Celsius), and the next day it was 17 degrees Celsius. For any Fahrenheit users out there: That's going from about 38 degrees to 62 degrees within a day...
The restaurant you referring to at 9:40 is definitely nice. But at that corner you've also got Freddy's bar. Called after the owner of Heineken. Great place for cocktails (and if it still exists, cigars in the smoking room). Highly recommend it.
As for the weather, yes it can change rapidly, that's why we have the app. It's a little more difficult to tell in a large city, but usually you can tell it's about to rain because the wind will pick up or you smell the rain. That will only give you a few minutes though.
Wintertijd is gezellig. The vibe of cities changes too. Lights, decorations, oliebollenkraampjes, There's just something about it. That's early winter tho, it will change mid January. I suppose you could call it a national hangover.
I always find it fascinating that although we are a small country the weather can be so different. Like then it's code yellow due heavy rainfall but not a single drop has fallen while 20km away streets and houses are floaded. Or today code orange due a storm in the north while in the south there is nothing, no code orange, not even yellow. And last week I saw rain, hail, snow and the sun all in one day. Then it's all white outside and 2 hours later there is nothing to be seen.
The erratic weather gives us a safe common ground to talk about. No matter what your belief system is, no one can deny it'll alway start to rain just after you realize you forgot your umbrella.
You're right about the weather, therefore we have a saying, 'Er is niets veranderlijker dan het weer!' (There is nothing more changeable than the weather!). 🤷♂️✌🏼
Ah, yes, the Netherlands, the country where you can have 4 seasons in one hour. I remember being at a very sunny festival in Arcen, it was like 32C, not a single cloud in the sky and I don't know why, but I looked to the side at some point and I noticed the sky turning pitch black above the forest and I put on my coat (in 32C yes), and my poncho over that and put my umbrella on the table and everyone was like "Wutt?" and like 5 minutes later it was CHAOS. The temperature dropped to 22C, it was wet, it was cold, everyone was running for shelter as the water ran off in small rivers. And 5 minutes after that the sun returned, the temperature shot up, and it was like sitting in a sauna XD So yeah, if you've lived here long enough, you know and you come prepared.
Winter weather always makes me happy to work from home. Chicago used to always have that weird Lake Effect weather, which works a lot like your seaside weather does. It's amazing how different the weather is just a few miles inland is, too.
About going on holiday during winter. Usually Dutch people take at least the days between Christmas and New Year off. A couple of year ago a law was introduced that you no longer can unlimited save up your vacation days. een stuwmeer aan vakantiedagen - a reservoir lake of vacation days, it was called. So now you only can save up a limited amount of vacation days that you can transfer to next year. And because so amny people are on holiday, things are scheduled down.
been watching for a bit, love the light hearted genuine videos, always goes to show how much we can take for granted for the weather, i honstly that it used to change even more often then it is now, howver sudden temprature changes over 10 degrees c do happen more often now then 10-15 years ago, sure it can just be a feeling but most seem to agree, also for weeather aps, i tend to use buienradar, theyve been the most accurate so far, and thy hav an option to check per 5 minutes basically so u can try to dodge between the rain and get to places fairly dry. and for the grumpyness in winter, we used to say we can control the water, but not the weather, and when it pours and people ever do complain, we jokishly say ''ah je bent toch niet van suiker'' ((dont complain), youre not made of sugar! (but more lighthearted)) also youre pretty spot on for the holidays, theres a lot to celebrate in winter, specifically december, so people also look forward to some time with their family, so that might help to on an unrelated note, if you ever want to explore some other places in the netherlands and see some events u can take a look at tt assen, basicaly its a big event arround motorcross, but at the end of it the entire city changes to a massive festival with i think we had 9 stages last year? its quite crazy and entrance is free. well keep doing what youre doing and have a great day!
The Weather in the Netherlands is best described as 4 seasons in a day. When people ask me what to pack for their trip, I tell them to pack something for every season :) Oh and check it out...as soon as the sun is out in winter time, us Dutchies will be out with our faces up to the sun. Getting that vitamine D in
winters in the #NL is not what it was couple years ago. i still remember the struggle of going to high school. on my bike through 30-45 cm of snow for a 10km one way. then arriving for nothing cause schools where closed. Teacher woke up to late and only informed those living near school(2km radius only)
Thank you for your good vibes and smiles! In Ireland they say: "Four seasons in one day", because the western wind blows diffent kinds of weather to the land land all the time. Your music has also good vibes, but is still a bit "whiggeling/wobbly" ( if you know what I mean).
Maybe it's culture or maybe it's just me but i love rain, i also love cold, so i typically don't carry an umbrella, i have a poncho i have with my in case it rains (i carry a backpack daily so it's great cover). I typically don't wear too many layers, it's a reason why a lot of people get cold in the winter, they'll see me dress "chilly" meanwhile they're cold and i'm unbothered, a lot of people don't understand that once you begin to sweat inside your clothing not only do you get sticky, you get cold quicker as well. As for weather, i'm now 33 years old, the heat waves have only gotten worse, they're unbearable during the summer, meanwhile snow and winter weather has mellowed out, i remember 10-15cm (4-6inches) of snow and -15 to -20c during the winter when i was between 5-10 years old, a lot changed.
I sent this video to an American buddy of mine from Texas complaining how 15 degrees Celsius was so cold in summer but so warm in winter and complaining about shaky weather. i sent this to him and he just apologised for all the complaining he did. found it hilarious
There are really small umbrellas that fit into a bag. Then you don’t have to carry them and instead you can take them out of your bag as soon as it starts raining. I also always wear a coat that has a hood attached to it. That will keep you dry if it’s raining only a little bit.
The weather is crazy in the Netherlands. Like in 2019 no rain all through January to September. It was a huge problem. Like we complained about the rain not coming.
Going off of what i've seen online, it's no wonder people in america get grumpy when it's winter time. Not only can you get snowed in over there, it can also get extremely cold (way colder than here). Not to mention all the ice that forms and makes even your driveway like a skatingrink. Ohh and the poweroutages due to the cold. Frozen pipes. Bursted pipes. That's just nuts. Whilest over here it's luckily very manageble and not that cold. Which, in my opinion, leads to much happier people.
The thing about Christmas time vacation here is that the two days of Christmas we celebrate(d) here are National holidays. So a lot of people get those off already. I believe all schools have their winter breaks around this time, so there's an added incentive for people with kids to take time off. And it's generally because of this holiday period less busy in most offices, so it's easier to take days off, cause there's not as much to do. This of course doesn't apply to shops and the Catering Industry where it's actually one of the busiest times. With New Years day also being a National holiday many people will try and get the days between Christmas and New Year's off because it's a nice long period which wont cost as many days off'. Which again feeds into it not being a busy period at most jobs so that's doable.
Remember that scene from Back to the Future 2? Where the Doc predicts the second when it will stop raining? Well, here's the Buienradar app for ya. 😂 Never thought we'd see that in my lifetime.
I work as a home care giver and wanted 3 days off this december for my Christmas holiday, 27th, 30th and 31st. I still have 2 weeks left over of free days. Guess what? No way. My choice was either week 51 or week 52 but not days in both weeks. So I just got the 27th off. So no, not everybody in the Netherlands is permitted to take up their vacation time whenever they want! It only if the work load permits you to take time off. The problem is we are understaffed and especially during holiday seasons they are unable to find replacements and people who need care need it all year round.
on stations, people get on the train where its gonna be closest to the exit/stairs of the station they're going to. most of the time you dont want to sit all the way at the back of the train, if you need to walk that whole way back once you're at your stop
I noticed from the two videos I watched from you that you seem to struggle with the umbrella situation XD Quick tip from a Dutchy, get one of those foldable umbrellas that you can put in your backpack or hang from the side of it. Then you will always have one with you and you dont have to carry it around all the time when its not raining. P.S. Love seeing you wander around my hometown.
It's the ocean so close by , it moderates the climate, if the wind is west, sea air, if the wind is east, continental air, Bert just brought rain and wind, (They name the depressions now), now we wait for Carin I guess..
Exactly the ocean makes the weather unpredictable. To my surprise this was even true at the Moroccan Atlantic coast. Intens showers - sun - intens showers.
The weather is fantastic here. exept some summer days where it's too hot and here its a moisture kind of heat. that's worse then a dry type of heat. or some moments in the year when it's raining too much. but better a bit more rain then a desert. but aside that what more do you want. not too cold winter enough rain for ground garden and cropses / food. the weather prediction is always accurate and you always know when what to do. against cold you can dress and with the window open it sleeps fantastic. + in case you work or go to school. getting out your warm bed right into the cold wakes you up better then a shower. Public transportation is good enough to use in case the weather is too bad. it could be far worse
Chicago, not the nicest place in winter, in particular when that northerly comes in over the water. Guess that is why the elderly move to Florida (though that might come to an end too). 😊
As someone who went to California and grew up in NL I can could feel the very cold there without much moisture, it's a huge difference and makes you not feel nice, because of the cold being so rough, here in NL we have a lot of water in the air because of the sea and I do think that does psychotically effect people in the US and make them very hostile and aggressive.
Bro, sandwich looks delicious. If you ever go to the Rai nearby, you can go to Feduzzi. It is located halfway along the Scheldestraat on the right when you walk from the Rai.
starting in the first week of december the first co-workers would wish all remaining workers a happy xmas and a good start of the new year and we would not see them again until the next year. and those who stayed at the office till near the end of the year, they would go on winter-holliday and be back at the end of januari. Those are hard times in the Netherlands to get any work done 😂
Hi , why don’t you get a small compact umbrella from action? There is a wrist cord with it .. better then hauling your big umbrella en losing it..Greetz and big up
That hardly ever happens, though I remember that once I got home from work and the central heating was frozen in the attic. Had to use the hair dryer to melt it. Never turned the CV off completely ever since!
The weather being like that has to do with the fact that it's a sea climate here, not just in the Netherlands but: Belgium, Denmark, England, Wales, Scottland, Ireland, parts of Germany, etc. Sunny one moment, and rainy/snowing/hail the next. That's normal for a sea climate.
Rain > snow. I love the sound of rain and it's calming. Netherlands have it better than many places too hot or much colder. Many thanks for allowing us into a small window of your life Sky!
Het is wel vaak wisselvallig in Nederland. Ik kleed me altijd in laagjes. Altijd een vestje, sjaaltje mee of om. En dan is er altijd een goede reden om ergens een koffie of warme chocomelk te drinken. Vrienden uitnodigen voor soep eten ook belangrijk.
It is a fun "game"; can you can spot the tourists and expats because of the umbrellas. I would say roughly 90% of people using an umbrella in the Netherlands, especially in the bigger cities, are tourists/expats ;)

Hi, I'm a Dutchie living in UK and I enjoy your video clips. I think the weather here (north) is not dissimilar I think. Christmas definitely a big thing here. When I grew up in the Netherlands, it was sort of quite a religious driven celebration in that we used to go to church on Christmas Eve and I LOVED IT!. And then some food like cold meats, cheese, maybe soup. Watch telly or play games maybe. Lovely. then I moved to the UK and the whole Christmas thing I found, was more about having fun and not so much about religion etc. It took me a while to get used to that because I felt it was a fake celebration basically, like I betrayed the original reason for celebrating Christmas. Now, I am pretty anglicised in these matters. The people in the UK spend tons of money on Christmas. I could not understand this and I still find it difficult to accept. On that note, I have missed celebrating Sinterklaas over the last 3 decades. Especially when our children were little. I myself thought t was so magical and the whole thing is more fun to me. Anyway, it was not to be (for a few years, we celebrated both Sinterklaas and Christmas and instead of spreading the cost between the two events, my wife doubled it 😱. But hey, the main reason it died down is simply to do with environment. My children could not really get into it as we did not live in the Netherlands. Still feel they missed out. I know a lot has changed with regards to Sinterklaas over the years and I was wondering if you have been able to embrace it or stuck with Christmas? What is your opinion on this, historically, culturally? Would be nice to have a video on this from you (I assume you haven't yet - but not sure). Well buddy, thanks again.
🥷🥷☕ The retired earth science teacher in me needs to point out that hail is formed in the updraft of thunder storms. No thunderstorm, no hail. Ice pellets that fall in the winter is sleet.
People don't really take time off so much, it's mostly that many companies are closed between Christmas and New Years, or are working very low key. People often just get this time off, they don't have to take it.
We haven't had a real winter in a lot of years 😂 It's more common the last years we have kind of winter weather for a few days (maybe a week at most) Probably for the best too, people can't drive to save their lives with a little rain. Let alone with some wet snow or a bit of solid snow.
As a Dutch person, the only country that I've visited that had weather changes come faster and more frequently it would be Iceland. Especially in Reykjavik. They literally have a saying there that goes: "If you don't like the weather, wait 10 minutes" 6 different kinds of weather in a day, sure no problem over there. Driving down Highway 1 there: Sunny over the road, snow to the left over the ocean and rain to the right over the mountains. Just spectacular.

I like that you are always so respectful and nice.
In the netherlands most of the time winter begins when spring is around the corner.
Feb , march april we will get snow and freezing wind.

Buy a small umbrella that folds out to a medium umbrella and folds in to a small umbrella again when you don't use it. Put the cover on it and carry it in your backpack ! 🙂
But it doesn't do you any good when it's windy...
Better wear a rain proof hat or capuchon with cords.
@dutchman7623 Daar heb jij dan weer gelijk in 😎
New Zealand has that type of weather as well. (Four seasons in one day is a song by a NZ band😂)
Crowded House.
I agree. Maoris called NZ the land of the long white cloud. Aotearoa
My man, you’re killing it! You’re growing so much! I remember the old days when you were at 3K subscribers. Today, it’s’ been 15 hours since you posted and you;ve already got over 10,000 views! You’ve picked the right niche. I found you because of the camera reviews, and stayed for the personable chats in the streets of the Netherlands.
And when Christmas Eve is on a workday, we are send off early, usually.
Same with Old Years Eve, get home before you get stuck in traffic.
Happy Thanksgiving !
In Belgium the bad weather is on/off like in the Netherlands too. We have a word for it: 'duveltjes kermis'. It translates to 'the devil's fair'.
Oh that was such a funny description of your coworker trying to have a smoke. Reminds me of a Donald Duck cartoon when he wants to go fishing. 😅
The restaurant you referring to at 9:40 is definitely nice. But at that corner you've also got Freddy's bar. Called after the owner of Heineken. Great place for cocktails (and if it still exists, cigars in the smoking room). Highly recommend it.
The decor chrismas lights in the streets and in the shops going into christmas and new year... are happy times.
11:55 it's for the light festival. 28 November til 19 January. it's great again this year.
great videos man, just all around good vibes ❤❤❤

And because so amny people are on holiday, things are scheduled down.
been watching for a bit, love the light hearted genuine videos, always goes to show how much we can take for granted
for the weather, i honstly that it used to change even more often then it is now, howver sudden temprature changes over 10 degrees c do happen more often now then 10-15 years ago, sure it can just be a feeling but most seem to agree,
also for weeather aps, i tend to use buienradar, theyve been the most accurate so far, and thy hav an option to check per 5 minutes basically so u can try to dodge between the rain and get to places fairly dry.
and for the grumpyness in winter, we used to say we can control the water, but not the weather, and when it pours and people ever do complain, we jokishly say ''ah je bent toch niet van suiker'' ((dont complain), youre not made of sugar! (but more lighthearted))
also youre pretty spot on for the holidays, theres a lot to celebrate in winter, specifically december, so people also look forward to some time with their family, so that might help to
on an unrelated note, if you ever want to explore some other places in the netherlands and see some events u can take a look at tt assen, basicaly its a big event arround motorcross, but at the end of it the entire city changes to a massive festival with i think we had 9 stages last year? its quite crazy and entrance is free.
well keep doing what youre doing and have a great day!
The Weather in the Netherlands is best described as 4 seasons in a day. When people ask me what to pack for their trip, I tell them to pack something for every season :) Oh and check it out...as soon as the sun is out in winter time, us Dutchies will be out with our faces up to the sun. i still remember the struggle of going to high school. on my bike through 30-45 cm of snow for a 10km one way. then arriving for nothing cause schools where closed.

@@Paraviews dude I’ve had a few people hitting me up about tips I’ve given in the past.. and are growing it makes me soooo happy to hear that
Maybe it's culture or maybe it's just me but i love rain, i also love cold, so i typically don't carry an umbrella, i have a poncho i have with my in case it rains (i carry a backpack daily so it's great cover).
Those 2 or 3 days where it snows here are my favorite. Just long enough to enjoy snow and short enough to not hate snow 😂
The problem is we are understaffed and especially during holiday seasons they are unable to find replacements and people who need care need it all year round.
i live in Melbourne Australia and very often the weather is like 4 seasons in a day.Melbourne is famous for that
Life is like weather in the Netherlands, you never know what you are going to get 🍀
on stations, people get on the train where its gonna be closest to the exit/stairs of the station they're going to. most of the time you dont want to sit all the way at the back of the train, if you need to walk that whole way back once you're at your stop
Your editing is genuinely so good
I noticed from the two videos I watched from you that you seem to struggle with the umbrella situation XD
Quick tip from a Dutchy, get one of those foldable umbrellas that you can put in your backpack or hang from the side of it. Then you will always have one with you and you dont have to carry it around all the time when its not raining.
P.S. Love seeing you wander around my hometown.
There are so many days with rain, you just gotta keep on doing what you want
Love it!!
Luckily I work for a British company here in the States, got the 21st to the 6th of January off :)

People don't really take time off so much, it's mostly that many companies are closed between Christmas and New Years, or are working very low key. People often just get this time off, they don't have to take it.
We haven't had a real winter in a lot of years 😂
It's more common the last years we have kind of winter weather for a few days (maybe a week at most)
Probably for the best too, people can't drive to save their lives with a little rain. Let alone with some wet snow or a bit of solid snow.
As a Dutch person, the only country that I've visited that had weather changes come faster and more frequently it would be Iceland. Especially in Reykjavik.
They literally have a saying there that goes: "If you don't like the weather, wait 10 minutes"
6 different kinds of weather in a day, sure no problem over there. Driving down Highway 1 there: Sunny over the road, snow to the left over the ocean and rain to the right over the mountains.
