Mixing EZDrummer 2 Part 3 - Trigger additional samples

  • In previous parts we've gotten the ball rolling on building a better drum mix from the raw sounds in EZ Drummer 2. We compressed and EQ'ed, added reverb and distortion. Now it's time to really beef things up by triggering additional samples for the kick and snare.
First we'll isolate the kick MIDI and Snare MIDI from the original MIDI file and onto their own tracks.
We'll trigger additional samples from REAPER's built-in sampler ReaSamplomatic 5000.
At the end we have 3 snares and 3 kicks playing at the same time for a more modern, powerful, textured tone.
For now, that's where we'll leave this series. Leave a comment with what you'd like to see if we continue the series.

I watched the whole series three times. Great stuff. You're a very talented engineer.

I watched all three in a row. So good! I am using Addictive Drums but it's exactly the same process. I am going to follow this video step by step on my current project, and see if I can get that much better.
The tempo of your workflow is perfect, by the way. Don't change a thing! Thanks for the great vid

Thank you for this series! Just got done watching and found it incredibly insightful. You mentioned a number of things you might do after this point at the end of the video, could you make a video showing those steps?
I really find it insightful the way you explain and operate plugins, something right now which feels like a barrier to my mixing abilities.
    Look forward to more :D

At this point I really need to build a song to be able to demonstrate anything else for mixing. Everything else is making these work with the rest of the mix.
Have you seen the free mixing course on the website?

+The REAPER Blog Oh now that's an even better idea, a complete mix would be AMAZING.
I'll check out the tutorial on the website today

Jon thanks for the video series very helpful. I know this is an old series but I notice at no point do you ever actually print out the separate drum tracks? You're mixing directly from the plug in? Is there any advantage to that over printing out the tracks and then processing the separated audio tracks?

Would like to hear this mixed with song. How well does EZ Drummer set in with a mix is the real question? Thanks!

Very nice! How do you change the track layout when making a folder? Custom actions? Thanks in advance!!

can you explain the set up a bit more here. as in:
If you have a midi signal from the snare that has a variety in volume, if you're only using 1 snare trigger sound with that snare be triggered at the same volume as the Midi notes that are being received, or will it ALWAYS trigger at it's volume....for example, you select Hard_Snare_12 that is a maxed out snare hit, and the midi notes are triggering at say volumes 100, 87, 78, 91 during a 4 beat, will you need multiple Hard_snare waves at different volumes to accommodate or will it trigger at the same velocity as the hit?
I'm asking because when I do load something like Big_Snare_001 through 012 into the trigger VST, I cannot tell if it's using the different samples per velocity or not. Maybe make a video on how to set that all up? Is this making any sense lol?

In ReaSamplomatic5k with one sample loaded it does basic Velocity to Volume scaling.
With multiple samples in list view it will play different samples for different velocities. You can see which sample is playing displayed in the flashing green box below the waveform.
another way to do it is here

Once you're happy with the overall drum sound and start to layer the other instruments... do you usually decide to go back and tweak the drums more because of context?..

    • @TheREAPERBlog
      @TheREAPERBlog  6 років тому

absolutely, lots of back and forth making little changes with everything else in the mix.

Which Samples are you using? And what do you think about triggering another set of EZDrummer as alternative? Thanks and greets

the samples are just some random packs that people shared on forums like 12 years ago. you can absolutely trigger other samplers
