23:27 Some of the Atlantis sets were located at the famous Ealing Film Studios. These scenes were therefore shot on film, which had an inherently softer quality than video tape.

This is how you know the U.N.I.T family count as companions - Yates' potential death was used as a cliffhanger!

From time to time railway stations in the UK will be sponsored by various organisations. It's advertising basically. This meant that for a while you could get on a train to Cambridge and have the great pleasure of being greeted by a sign that read, "Welcome to Cambridge, home of Anglia Ruskin University."

I love that there are times in this story that it feels like the master show featuring the doctor

It was a V1 that we saw; a pulse jet (hence the very recognisable sound) precursor of the modern cruise missile. Very basic targeting, just point it in the right direction and give it enough fuel to reach the target. When the fuel runs out the V1 heads for the ground and explodes. As you might imagine, it had (just about) enough accuracy to hit a target the size of London. Luckily, the British were able to feed back enough misinformation about where the earliest V1s hit that it threw off the calculations of fuel loading so they became progressively less accurate.
As an aside, the fighter pilots found that by tipping the V1's wing (by putting their own aircraft's wing directly below thus spoiling the airflow or, as a last resort, actually flipping it by contact) they were able to put it outside the range of attitude adjustment and cause it to crash prematurely.
The V2, by contrast, was a rocket powered ballistic missile, against which there was no defence. It could have been a great threat if it had appeared earlier in the war. Again, however, guidance was primitive and hitting a target smaller than a sprawling metropolis would still have been difficult! Interestingly, the Soviet Union managed to seize the majority of the hardware at the end of the war, which they reverse engineered to kickstart their space industry, while the US captured the scientists and engineers, most famously Wernher von Braun, who went on to be key movers in the US space program so both were direct descendants of the German war efforts.
I think this difference between the hardware based engineering approach of the Soviet Union which basically took what they had and gradually improved it and the scientific approach of the US teams who designed from a theoretical understanding, lead to the quick start from the Soviets--they had rockets that worked so just kept the same design only bigger--versus the US 'blank sheet' approach that lead to more advanced designs. . . it just took a little longer to get there! The Soviet (and later Russian) rocket designs were all essentially the same, theoretically primitive but cheap--in space flight terms--and reliable. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" has been the pragmatic approach from our Russian friends.
Throw a few coins in the jar for me!

'The Time Monster' is completely bonkers and almost everybody hates it, but I really enjoy it! It's just a lot of fun, I don't know how you can watch it and not have a great time.

There had been some thought given to a Dalek story ('The Daleks In London') to end the season, but instead the storyline for what would become 'Day Of The Daleks' was altered to include Skaro's most famous export.

Glad you're watching this one -- I think it's terrific fun, but a lot of the fandom hates it for some reason. They say that the special effects are bad but it's Doctor Who for pete's sake. Of course the special effects are bad! It's like a live-action comic book to me, and I think it's a fun ride.

There was a minotaur in The Mind Robber, so pat yourself on the back for remembering correctly. We mostly see it's shadow on the wall in that story, but there is a "blink and you'll miss it" shot of it's face. Chronos was the god of time, while Cronus was the Titan who was the father of Zeus, Hades, Poseidon and assorted other gods. Producer Barry Letts co-wrote this story with Robert Sloman as well as last season's The Daemons. In season eight, they used the pen name Guy Leopold to avoid possible criticism about Letts both writing and producing, for this story and future collaborations, Sloman was given sole credit.

Time lord lack of involvement always made sense to me. I've heard Gallifrey is 250 million light years from earth so even with them keeping an eye on time events they're going to take subjective time to notice something happening on earth. Then when they do they are time lords so they may well see that the disturbances are resolved without them needing to do anything. In addition to this the master is convinced he can control Kronos so they may not actually view him as a large threat unless left unchecked. So to the doctor its "oh no he can consume the universe" whereas to the time lords "oh some minor kronovore disturbance is being picked up on earth, keep an eye on it and if it passes .2 omega's 's we'll send a message to the doctor to fix it since he's in the area."

7:10 And it's why in Power Rangers they had a villain called Lord Zedd, with a big Z staff. I feel obligated to point out that most other languages (or at least the ones I know) say some variant of Zed or Zet.
13:45 Funny you bring up Star Wars, I remember YEARS ago reading a story, and this could be entirely made up or I could be misremembering, but apparently Tom Baker and the producer, who would have been Phillip Hinchcliffe at the time, went to see Star Wars together, and at the end one of them just said "we're fucked". I wonder if Colin Baker and John Nathan Turner had a similar reaction to Back to the Future.
20:10 In general I always find it odd that the Time Lords don't stop the Master. Surely their non-interference policy extends to stopping other Time Lords from doing it? They're happy to put the Doctor on trial, but let the Master roam free?

    • @Mrazmatmahmood
      @Mrazmatmahmood 2 роки тому +3

I just assume they've never been able to track the Master down. Remember, it was only when the Doctor called the Time Lords in 'The War Games' that they finally got a hold of him.

_"I feel obligated to point out that most other languages say some variant of Zed or Zet"_ - Indeed. French "zède", Italian "zeta", spanish "zeda", Polish "zet", German "(t)zett". Presumably because it came from the Greek letter zeta (rhymes with "meta")... as opposed to "zee-a" ;)
The only exception I can think of is modern Russian "ze" (NB: pronounced "zeh", not "zi" or "zee").

35:46 I don't think pronouncing "-os" to rhyme with "boss" is particularly British. In fact, I can't think of any place in Europe where the "-os" suffix *_isn't_* pronounced that way... including Greece, where words like Kronos, kudos and mythos came from, after all! Even "Latin" Europeans have always rhymed names like "Carlos" and "Marcos" with "boss", too, so it baffles me why the USA came to pronounce such words as "kudowce", "Carlowce" (etc) when there's apparently no linguistic or orthographical reason to do so.

We do say bed in the UK. It's something we sleep in rather than a buzzy thing that makes honey, but we still say it. It's also spelt 'zed' as well. Unless you mean the pronunciation of the letter b itself, in which case we don't say ced or ded either. It's still the correct pronunciation, though.

    Archival Holdings
    PAL colour: None
    NTSC colour: All
    B/W telerecordings: All
    Other PAL: 6
Episodes 1-5 follow the by now standard of being RSC version on the DVD, and we'll have to see if the Blu-ray overlaps the colour with the telerecordings. Ep 6 is a different story as in the 80s a low-band PAL copy was found in the engineering department at the BBC. It was effectively B/W with only bits of colour every so often, however it is a true 625-line 50 fields per second source as per the original version. Overlapping the RSC colour of ep 6 with this version gives a very high quality restoration.
And with end of season 9, we move out of the period of mostly missing colour. Still a couple of affected episodes to go though.

Tomtit is actually not an uncommon name Tomtit is a small passerine bird in the family Petroicidae it's a tiny Australasian Robin from the islands of New Zealand but whether this is coincidental or they got the name from that no one really knows. Robert Sloman did write for Doctor Who before in the Season 8 finale "The Daemons" but under the name Guy Leopald. This is considered one of the worst stories in the fandom yeah it's cheesy and there's alot that doesn't make sense but it doesn't really matter it's enjoyable fun and it's entertaining :) you can't go wrong with Pertwee. The Atlantis in this story is not a connection to "The Underwater Menace'".
