Are we absolutely sure he was referring to Inferno? I thought he was referring to Gallifrey, hence hearing the Daleks in his nightmare vision. There were no Daleks involved in Inferno.

@@RebornLeveller Up to this point we haven't seen Daleks on Gallifrey, we also have no reason to believe Gallifrey has anything to do with fire, and the writer was the same as the one for Inferno so I think a the very least the intent of the writer was Inferno.

Yates's line "She's quite a dolly" - that's the writer Don Houghton commenting on his wife Pic-Sen Lim playing Chin Lee.

I've always assumed that the Doctor is referring to the parallel Earth of Inferno when he speaks of a world being destroyed by fire (lava). There's a line of dialogue that establishes that this story takes place about six months after Terror of the Autons, during which time the Master was able to set up his Emil Keller identity. The actor who plays Barnham (Neil McCarthy) may look familiar if you've ever seen the original Clash of the Titans, in which he plays Calibos (albeit under heavy makeup). Chin Lee is played by Pik-Sen Lim, who was the wife of writer Don Houghton. Director Timothy Combe used Chinese actors because he disliked the use of "Yellow Face", but such practices were still going on at the BBC at the time and will (unfortunately) be seen again in Classic Who.

@@RebornLeveller The Time War was far in the future from this story. Gallifrey wouldn't have been destroyed by fire at this point, nor would the Daleks have even been there. The Daleks are most likely a separate fear. Like dreaming about being naked in public and having a murderous clown chasing you, the two things might be in the same nightmare, but aren't necessarily related in real life. He actually has visions of a number of monsters from past episodes, including ones that wouldn't have scared an exceptionally nervous rabbit. Like Koquillion (who's basically a Doctor Who version of a Scooby Doo villain) and the Zarbi

The production team had enlisted the services of a specialist Chinese/Asian actors' agency for the part of Fu Peng, but none of the actors they sent for audition were any good. As a last resort, they had to use the proprietor of the agency to play the part.
It was easier to cast Chin Lee, as Pik-Sen Lim was the writer's wife. She's actually Malaysian, not Chinese, but who's counting?

*Richard* "But, if it extracts negative impulses, the Doctor doesn't have a whole lot of negative impulses". Are you sure about that?😅
The first Doctor basically kidnaps Ian and Barbara in 'An Unearthy Child' and would've bashed a caveman's brains out if Ian hadn't stopped him in the same story. The second Doctor manipulates and lies to Jamie throughout 'The Evil of the Daleks' and so many others during his whole run. The third Doctor lied to Liz and selfishly tried to leave using the TARDIS during a potential emergency in the last story Don Houghton wrote, 'Inferno'. I could go on, but I think you get the point. The Doctor is such a great character and interesting character because he's a flawed hero.

This is my 2nd of 3 favourite stories from the Pertwee era. It has aspects of Anthony Burgess's Clockwork Orange. It was also Don Houghton's last script for Dr Who because of the huge budget required for the story it went massively over budget. Raymond Westwell ,the Prison Govenor's accent Dad commented on sounds like it has faint trace of Ulster Irish.

Hokkien is a Chinese dialect spoken in Taiwan and the Philippines - Pertwee learned the dialogue phonetically but isn't doing the accent, so is more or less incomprehensible, but at least they were trying.
The last executions in the UK were in 1964 - do not really that long before this.

I love this story and the Master's involvement in is just great and his plans are - to quote the Doctor - "a lunatic scheme".
    1. Creates a machine (which actually has an alien parasite inside it and y'all will know that by now) and takes it to Stangmoor prison, so that it can feed on negative impulses, which it needs to function and stay alive. The Keller machine is simply a way for him to execute a much grander plan.
    2. That plan, at least initially, is to use the Keller machine and Chin Lee to commit specific murders for him in order to disrupt the world peace conference, which would almost certainly cause a world war. This is smart because the way in which the Master has these people killed - by their own fears/visions in their minds manifested into reality - ensured that the murders couldn't be traced back to anyone. Certainly not him.
    3. One this plan was foiled by UNIT and the Doctor, the Master moved on to hijack the thunderbolt missile instead and use it destroy the peace conference, which would again achieve his ultimate goal of causing a war. He couldn't do this alone though, he first had to get some support. Stangmoor prison was the perfect place to get that support. He used the influence the Keller machine had already afforded him there to simply walk into the place and take control and convinced the prisoners imprisoned in there to help him.
All of this is quite insane and convoluted, but I love it because it's exactly the kind of plan the Master would think up. 'The Mind of Evil' has a great, well written plot that, despite being quite convoluted, does make sense. What really makes this story shine though is all the great characters. The two best ones of course being the Doctor and the Master. The scenes between Pertwee and Delgado in this story are quite simply some of the best the two characters will ever have together. This is a very character driven story and it's brilliant.

While eps 2-6 have been colourised via the chroma dot recovery as per Ambassadors of Death, ep 1 doesn't have any chroma dots to recover! This is because it is a rare example of the chroma signal actually being filtered out as it should have been. This means that the only way this one has been colourised is manually. I vaguely remember reading something in an old Dr Who behind-the-scenes book that said that after Pertwee knocked the water glass over on Keller/the Master's desk in the prison, the entire floor turned into a skating rink and both actors could barely stay on their feet. They kept at it like troupers so the cameras kept rolling, but it's a wonder neither of them broke any bones.

36:06 When I was at school, for our Christmas Mass in 2014 we had a girl sing Silent Night in German to honour the 100th anniversary of the Christmas Day Armistice. She didn't speak German, but one of the German teachers had spent some time teaching her to do it.
38:11 If it makes you feel better, I have a Spanish friend who assures me he thinks Mexicans sound weird.
Episode 1 of this story is the only episode to be recolourised completely from scratch. They had no colour at all for it (All the other episodes had some existing colour data to work from), so a small team spent months colourising it manually by colouring in key frames and having a computer do the rest.

I think Stangmoor Prison is a combination of Strangeways and Broadmoor, two famous British prisons (the second being a high security psychiatric hospital).
The Brigadier has always had Captains, with Benton being his head NCO. The introduction of Yates was both to have a more permanent junior officer for the Brigadier and a potential love interest for Jo.
Previous Captains you may have missed:
Captain Jimmy Turner in 'The Invasion'
Captain Jimmy Munro in 'Spearhead from Space' (yes, they were both called Jimmy. I have a feeling they wanted to bring Turner back)
Captain Sam Hawkins in 'The Silurians' (deceased)
No captain in 'The Ambassadors of Death' that I can remember. Obviously haven't replaced Hawkins yet!
And no Captain in 'Inferno'....word of Hawkins demise obviously putting off potential candidates....
