Racer X Films: 2006 Honda CRF450 Build

  • This build was an old bike of Simon Cudby’s pal, B-Rad, who is an all-around good guy and friend of Racer X. We wanted to freshen up his bike for him and we were also curious how good a 2006 CRF450 would be with some updates and new parts. The result was a great looking bike that blew Ping’s mind on the track. There is a reason this model was the gold standard for 450’s a decade ago … because it was a weapon!
    But could you really still be competitive on it? Our test rider, David Pingree breaks it down for you in this project test.

    Cool. I bought a 2005 that has not been ridden for a few years at a low price. The guys were unable to start it. I had to work a few days to repair, adjust, restart, etc. But I am now very pleased to see how good and strong the bike runs. To say the truth, although I am an experienced rider, the bike is still much better than me...

    I ride a 2008, probably one of the best years ever made by Honda. Naturally I have modernized it with upgraded parts, and and it still runs with all the modern bikes comfortably!! Love it to pieces!

      Dirtbike Moto I just picked up a 2006 crf450r with 50 hours the float bowl is leaking so I can’t ride it for long in fear of it catch fire but so far it is really nice and sounds soooo good but I can test that further when I get the float bowl gasket

    Still ride my '06 CRF450R all the time, and it is plenty fast for me. I have the same FMF Powercore 4 exhaust set-up as this build, It works awesome (though I bit heavier than the 4.1 RCT I has before). The bike is plenty competitive and is fun to ride! Will be riding it until it falls apart!

    I don’t plan on buying a new bike any time soon, Love my 06 CRF-450, & at 49 years young I really like seeing these older bikes still competing against the new ones!

    Just bought a 2006 crf 450 with 18 hours use on the strength of this video and the enthusiasm Ping has for this bike. Been out of the game for 24 years can’t wait to get out on it just hope these old bones can cope 🤣. The mind is writing cheques.........

    I have a 2005 crf 450r and I love it. I just can't seem to get rid of it and get a new one. I use pro taper gold oring chain and renthal sprockets. The chain is the best I have found. It doesn't stretch.

    05-08 were definitely the best crf450s I have a 14 crf450 now but I miss my old 05, it just had this feel when you rode it,and the motor was amazing, it didn't need to rev high which is the best way to ride a 450, keep the revs down to limit chain tension and suspension bind

    This has me smiling ear to ear watching in 2022 - this machine is one to go into the record books!!! -Great year of CRF!!! You can just see that this thing is an absolute blast - even with the ape hangers (which would work probably, rather well for my 6'1" athletic 235lbs frame). lol
    Just bought a 2022 CRF450R-S due to the power characteristics with a built engine/ecu combo. :) They were blown away that I didn't go with the newer one, but I appreciated the feel of the 2020 450R with the traction control...it just has different power characteristics than the newer ones due to engineering of the engine. Personally, to me, it doesn't make it better - just different. The 18'-20' is a staple of Racing in the USA just like the 06'-08'! Just called XPR Motorsports for that custom holeshot set-up!!! 💪

    I still race my 2007 and love the bike it's super strong. When you work and race I can't be affording a brand new bike. Hmmmm as fast as a new bike they say well I guess it's all in how far you twist that thing on the right.

    I’ve had an 04,05, and an 06 at different times I’m not fast enough to really tell the difference but they were my 3 favorite 450s I had and the 04 was my first racing 4 stroke. I’ll always have a soft spot for these bikes because they seemed so advanced at the time.

    I had a cracked rim on my 07 CRF 250R, and decided to really put some time (and some money into it)...LOL> I used a few of these videos (250 builds) when I went looking for different upgrades. Tusk wheelset (front and rear), tusk oversized front rotor, tusk rear rotor, replaced pads, changed out brake fluid, changed out antifreeze fluid, new stainless brake lines (front and rear), new clutch cable, new renthal sprockets and o ring chain, works connection clutch perch, engine dress up kit, tusk brake and shifter. No internal parts though...everything on the motor is running fine, so I haven't done much there. I still need to rebuild the shock and forks, and lube the suspension linkage. At that point...I should be set!

    Love this type of build. At the rate things are going, who can really afford to stay up-to-date with current bikes every year? It's just getting crazy expensive. I bought a new bike in 2005 and it was $5700 or so. A little over ten years later, and the cost of bikes has almost DOUBLED. Are you getting double the performance? Hell no. I feel like the OEM's are really hurting the sport right now and need to step back and try to look at things with a long-term view in mind. But hey, thats just my opinion and maybe I'm wrong.

    • @cameronmartens1809

      doug148877 you don't need a new bike every year. you don't even need a new bike every 3 years I beat 450s and 250s all the time on my 03 KX250 but I am looking to trade it for a 05 because 05 and up is better than 03

    • @stephenwilson1012
      @stephenwilson1012 6 років тому

      Kawasaki started it in 08. Black wheels, mag hubs, mag triple clamps, coated fork tubes etc. So now your stock bike is close to a factory bike 10 years prior. Bikes aren't really stock anymore. That's why they're so expensive.

      I agree with 100 percent I literally have 6 bikes because I choose never to buy new after catching on... it’s absolutely ridiculous how much they go for and nothing changed maintenance wise maybe if they lasted as long as sport bikes then I’d understand but they damn near cost as much as a 600rr

  • @floman450

    I agree with ping it's very interesting how manufacturers make claims every year about bikes but in the end is it really that much of a change or just a new year. One reason I still ride my 2012 kx450f it's pretty much the same bike with modifications and JMR suspension.

  • @bikermike
    @bikermike 7 років тому

    Very true about how so much has changed but doesn't really make a big difference, in fact going the opposite way with the air fork! I rode an 06 from new till my 13 now and still miss the motor in the 06!

    Ping, my dude! I have nearly this exact bike (07' CRF450) PLEASE tell me how I should allocate that $5-600 you mentioned to get her on THAT level(cosmetics not included) She's been dormant for quite a bit but fires up on the 5-6th kick. Never blown up but well raced and ridden for 5+ years as an intermediate. I'll await your instructions Sir...

      Point is you can pick up a 2005-2008 CRF450, revalve suspension, throw a pipe on and be competitive....for way less $$ than 10k + interest for a new bike.
      Also, 2006 CRF comes stock with 55hp and 36ft/lbs of torque.

    • @Boots67
      @Boots67 5 років тому +1

      Even if they somehow put $4k worth of work in they're getting a decked out race bike that fits you perfectly and it's STILL less than a new bike.
      Pick up a 2006 CRF for $2k + $4k of work= $6k
      2018/19= $10-12k + interest for a bone stock bike.
      Your point is invalid

    Great project you guys have done for yr mate, props guys!
    That bike with the bigger seat bars made you look like a 85cc rider of std height stepping up to a 125cc for the first time!
    It's also funny, because I have been saying for awhile that Imo/e that 4t have slowed progress not enhanced it compared to the developed curve that 2t went through in the same time period at MX and even Enduro level compare 80s to 2006-18, so hearing you say that just confirms what I have been ranting on about, I personally like both 2t and 4t, I just can't stand the marketing BS we get feed or the cost increases the 2 class 4t imposed at pro level right down to grass roots killing off events that went for years and years and now no longer supported enough due to costs!
    The 3 main classes not counting the juniors (50-85cc) 125/250/500 were a far better spread for growth and development of the sport and riders, anyways off topic.
    Just awesome you guys did this for your buddy and the bike looks great, as usual Jay and the team do a fantastic job of these bikes👍
