I'm confused. An earlier no-spread sugar cookie recipe vido you use corn starch. You said it was the magic ingredient so they don't spread. Now you don't use corn starch. Can you please explain? Thank you.
Hot tip: cut your cookies, freeze them at least 1 night (fridge would do fine, doesn't have be the freezer). The flavor will taste better because the ingredients had time to rest AND they won't lose their lines when baked. They will keep their sharp lines. I drop cookies in the tray straight from the fridge. They always cooked evenly. Might need 2/3 minutes more but at least they look fresh.
Mother always refrigerated her sugar cookie dough before rolling it out for the cookie cutters. The dough was already ready, so I never learned to make her sugar cookie dough. The first time I tried on my own was a sticky mess and I never tried again. But I have wonderful memories of making sugar cookies with Mom during school Christmas break.
@@MaritaCovarrubias01 perhaps you might find the room in the fridge to put the cookie dough rolled in wax paper (my mother did that) or plastic wrap overnight or for several hours. She also kept half of the dough chilled in the fridge while we worked with the other half. Mom’s cookies were delicious and I have great memories of helping my mother make those sugar cookies at Christmas time.

Just wondering this recipe doesn't call for corn starch but your original no spread sugar cookies had corn starch no baking powder. So wondering if there was a reason for the change.
The recipe link is the same that you used when posting the "Easy No Spread Sugar Cookies" recipe in September 2019. Why is it the same link but a different recipe - and why are some ingredients, e.g. the cornstarch you praised in 2019, missing in the recipe on your website now? I am just curious because I wanted to use a basic recipe like this (or the one posted in 2019 using cornstarch) for this year's Christmas bakery. Would be grateful for a response!
Thank you! For decades my family has made sugar cookies with the premade tube dough. I copied all your instructions down and measured the flour as you said. These were the best sugar cookies I have seen since my grandma was around. 😂I was so excited when I saw how the dough came out. I shared the recipe and the video with my mom, so now we can make homemade sugar cookies again 🎉 I’m almost in tears because the sentimental value is so deep- truly grateful!
200 grams is not 1 cup of sugar. It’s 250 grams. I did the 200 and the cookies are not sweet enough. So add the extra 50 grams. Also add 30 grams of cornstarch and sift all dry ingredients together.
I’ve tested many cookie recipes and this is probably the best tasting and the cookies also look good. No spread, just a little brown on edges, perfect. Let’s see if these last until they are decorated.
These are the ultimate Christmas cookie! Can you provide a link for the snowflake cutter, my favorite also, so pretty. You make everything look so easy and wonderful! Happy Holidays!
I LOVE that you use a scale to measure ingredients. I started doing that after the first time I saw one of your videos over two years ago. It really makes a difference and I wish all recipes everywhere included the weight measurements.
*sugar cookies* - 4 cups or 480g flour - 3/4 tsp baking powder - 3/4 tsp salt Mix - 1 cup or 226g unsalted butter room temp - 1 cup or 200g granulated sugar Whisk until light and fluffy - 2 large eggs room temp Add one egg, let it whisk, scrape the bowl then another. - 2 tsp vanilla essence Let it stir Then gradually add the flour mixture. I have to say I’m a little sad you changed your recipe. Your old recipe (using cornstarch) is my go to. I’m glad I have it written down. It’s so much easier for kids to roll out and work with.

Thanks for your great recipes and informative videos John! I look forward to them. I've tried one of your old sugar cookie recipes from a video where you used corn starch, but I noticed that your most recent ones don't include it. Is there a reason you don't use it anymore? Thank you and keep 'em coming!
Hi John, These look delicious! I’ve been making sugar cookies on my own since I was 12 (48 years)! It’s my absolute favorite cookie! Recently I used your buttercream frosting recipe for the Halloween sugar cookies I made for my grandsons Halloween Cookie Decorating Party! The frosting did not disappoint!! Absolutely fabulous!! I am hoping we get to see you with your family making/decorating cookies this holiday season. I so enjoyed last years video watching Brian and Lachlan snagging cookies! 😂 It was the best! ❤🎄Cheers!
Thank you so much for this delicious recipe. My family approved! I’m anxious to make them again and was wondering how long can I refrigerate the dough and or freeze before rolling and finishing making the wonderful cookies? Thank you again
I'm Danish but lived in the US for a short while, so I sometimes get an irrational urge to defend US cooking because it often gets an undeservedly bad rep. These days when my boyfriend makes disparaging comments about US food I just make him some - because surprise-surprise he actually likes traditional US food, including US Italian, US Chinese and other integrated immigrant cuisines. So perhaps some US-style butter cookies should be part of my Christmas baking this year. They're fairly similar to other biscuits I regularly make for him, so I know he'll love them. (And easy-but-delicious biscuits/cookies is how I roll, pardon the pun.)
Premade this dough yesterday and rolled out/cut/baked cookies today! What an awesome recipe! Thank you for the tips! The timing tip definitely came in handy! 😁
Okay so I made the cookie dough for these sugar cookies two days ago. I had to do trial run before thanksgiving. so last night I baked up a few of the cookies. and let me just say this and brag on you some. John these cookies are yes, very easy sugar cookies and they are oh so delicious. Not too sweet and have that good twang-ness to them. Very, very delicious. So of course, this morning during coffee time, I had to do the coffee test. and yup I tell you this they held together so very well after dunking for at least four seconds. and we all know cookies usually fall apart, nuh uh, not these LOL! So, I want to say thank you for sharing this and this is Hands Down my go to Sugar Cookie Recipe! :)
Loooovvvvveeee them 🎉🎉🎉Yesterday i make them with your royal icing receipe!!!! Oh my God it was to goooddd! Thank you son much.!!! Merry Christmas !!! God bless you😊
Hello John, I absolutely adore your channel. Your channel inspired me to start baking. 2 months ago I didn't know a thing about baking and now I have started making delicate French pastries. This channel has helped me start my baking career and I hope that you keep doing what you do. If possible could you do muffin tops of gingerbread cookies next for Christmas!
Yesterday I made sugar cookies using another chef’s recipe and my cookies came out dry and crumbly. Today I used your recipe using my kitchen scale and dough is absolutely PERFECT! Thank you.
I've baked for 25 years and have always hated homemade sugar cookies. Hated. Until I made these! These were so amazing, I substituted the vanilla with honey and made a cream cheese icing, and they were mouthwatering! Thank you so much
The 1st time I made sugar cookies when I was 10, no one told me how long to knead the dough and it turned out so hard you couldn’t even bite them! Lol the dough also broke a window…. Don’t ask 🫣
Could you do a simple white sandwich bread recipe? I'm having so much trouble finding one that I like 😅 your recipes are the only ones that really seem to work for me, they always turn out soooo good! definitely trying this sugar cookie recipe this weekend though 😋
Sugar cookies hold such great memories for me. Mom would wait until school was on Christmas break to make sugar cookies and other baked goods. I was her happy helper. Our cookies weren’t fancy frosted - we used regular sugar, colored sugars, cinnamon red hots, those minuscule multi-colored sprinkles and the silver balls that would probably break my teeth now. I also chopped the various candied fruits for her fruit cake, perhaps that where my love of jewels started. It was great spending time with my mother. Rest in Heavenly Peace, Mother.
Followed video exactly. Dough turned out like a brick - dry and crack when rolling. So, i obviously missed something :( i even used scale instead of measuring cup. As only liquids are egg, butter and vanilla, whes the best way to thin brick dough so it's not a complete throw away? FYI, beaten eggs never really poofed as much as yours.
You are an awesome teacher. I learned how to make your swiss meringue butter cream. I was afraid that I would be wasting my ingredients and it would not turn out, but your YT sessions take the fear out of making many things. I also live in a place without good Indian restaurants. I have made your naan and the chicken tikka masala. HEAVEN. Thank you for being you.
Y’know, one of the thing that helps in these videos is seeing what’s “normal” in a given situation. Yeah, I use that word sparingly but I’m talking about things like what a mixer does to the dough. I didn’t have the budget for a Kitchenaid when I got my stand mixer. I have a smaller, well reviewed, low end stand mixer and it has a weird quirk at low speeds, where the speed goes up and down constantly. I still have no idea if it’s supposed to do that but it gets the job done. However, it tends to make a person doubt everything the mixer does so seeing that even a nicer mixer lets ingredients clump at the bottom of the bowl tells me that mine isn’t too bad. I’ve made meringues with it so I knew it functioned but I still appreciate the reassurance. Even when it works it nags at you that maybe something’s wrong and that you might need to replace it, but I just don’t use it often enough right now to sink money into a better one.
I’ve made this exact cookie recipe many many times John, perfect every time and you are free to decorate in any way you like, we used to enjoy decorating with my daughter, especially with different colours of sanding sugars or Royal icing, always so much fun to do together, we never forgot the fun we had. Thank you for sharing with us, it brought back so many fun and loving memories for us….many thanks John💕 Enjoy the rest of your week and thanks again for sharing this video, certainly looking forward to the next one!!! 🍪 Tina 🍪

John Kanell, you are the 💣. I can never thank you enough for teaching me how to make the BEST homemade cookies! You are the best of the best and I enjoy watching your videos. Thanks for being you, thanks for making us laugh and that’s for teaching us ❤️ I am so grateful to have come across your channel 🙏🏼
Recipe Request: Portuguese Beer Cookies please. A friend brought these very thin crisp-like cookies back from her travels and they are awesome. If you are interested, I can send you photos of what they look like and the packaging. They don’t look like cookies. They look like very thin crisps. I haven’t found a recipe online. Thank you! Loving your channel!
I just saw a tip on how to soften butter faster! Read that if you get get two glasses and put boiling hot water in them, then dump the water out. After put the cups over the butters and in a few minutes it should be room temp! Wanted to share, haven’t tried tho. Thanks for the great channel ✨
Oh so that’s how you do the sugar decorating!! With granulated sugar with color 😮 i always wondered about that cause I always seen pictures in my moms baking books but never showed me how to decorate them like this. Thank you!
Hi I just wanted to say that you are so wonderful to watch and Ilove your vibe! You just motivated me to try this recipe. I am no baker I am the cooker of our household, my husband is the baker, but he loves cookies and I really want to bake him some before his big final he has coming up at school! Thank you for making this video and I already subscribed for more:)
We always just added a pinch of colored sugar by rubbing thumb and forefinger together. Brushing with a little melted butter and pressing into the sprinkles sounds very yummy.
Yayyy, first christmas recipe this year! 😂 I LOVED the old recipe and I will definitly try the new one! Looks delicoius! 😅 And I always put some colored frosting with some sprinkles on the cookies
I didn't know how much flour went into cookies 🍪 I love watching your channel 😁 I bought a store bought key lime pie I cheated 😂😂 I never measure I always eyeball the measuring 😂😂i like the gingerbread style and the snowflakes 🌨️😊
I made it and it was delicious. It was my first time making cookies like that so i thought it will be dry but it came out so good. Thanks for sharing with us❤
I never even imagined that sugar was classed as wet ingredients so thank you for the fun fact . I am curious do you make your own bees wax cloths ? . Cookies look delicious
You are a wonderful cook!! You are my go-to... I just love you and I love your recipes and thank you so much for sharing.. Happy Holidays to you and your family🍗🎄 oh and I'm buying your cookbook for my sister-in-law for Christmas.. We are always in cooking competition but it's fun!
I love this recipe sm, I did the cookies today and my family loved them! (I’m a 16 year old that wants to get into baking so I start with some easy ones lol)
Some days I just come and watch John explain and walk through the process it’s just cathartic to listen to him gently narrate the nifty details one of the best food bloggers /authors in my humble opinion. Wonderfully insightful and such a brilliant teacher (his teaching background shines through this). Those look scrumptious et so simple to make. Thanks for sharing @PreppyKitchen ☺️🙏🏻and Happy Holidays in advance. 🎄
John I made this recipe earlier with my 8 year old niece and they were delicious! We didn’t even frost them and she still said they were the best cookies she ever had. I saved half the dough for cookies on demand when it starts getting colder here. Thanks John!
John, I love how generous you are with your videos. I think even beginner bakers could be successful with your helpful hints. Your recipes are great. If I'm not baking myself I love watching great bakers like you.❤
I have found the perfect sugar cookie recipe after years of trying different ones. The perfect recipe is just like a chocolate chip recipe...omit thr chocolate chips of course...Use all sugar and omit the brown sugar. Roll the dough into balls and then roll in sugar. - 4 cups or 480g flour
- 3/4 tsp baking powder

I made this recipe and the cookies were perfect!!!!! ♥️
Where can I purchase the snowflake cookie cutters with the little knob? Ty
The snowflakes are also my favorite
We always just added a pinch of colored sugar by rubbing thumb and forefinger together. Brushing with a little melted butter and pressing into the sprinkles sounds very yummy.
yummy my little lad is going to love these
i do have a question about your homemade vanilla, is it just water and vanilla pods
I have lived a long time & never have seen a man make sugar cookies. This is refreshing to watch. Just saying.😄
Love watching your cooking videos, all of your recipes are amazing! Thanks for sharing 😊❤
Love you and your videos!! Why did you omit the cornstarch from your original sugar cookie video?
Is the flower mixture the one from the start? Like is it part of the four cups of flour?
I never comment on any receipe that I tried but I can't resist to write a comment after trying these cookies.
These are just awesome. Perfectly done.
Can you use powdered sugar instead of flour to dust the counter when rolling the cookies out ?
I made it and it was delicious. It was my first time making cookies like that so i thought it will be dry but it came out so good. Thanks for sharing with us❤
Thank you I love your videos...
I never have luck with making cutout cookies, but I am going to try these! They do seem pretty simple.
I never even imagined that sugar was classed as wet ingredients so thank you for the fun fact . I am curious do you make your own bees wax cloths ? . Cookies look delicious

❤
FOR AN EASY RECIPE you certainly do talk excessively..........
John, I just made my husband sugar cookies the other day they were just so, so now Im going to try your recipe this weekend. Great timing. Thank you.
If I'm not baking myself I love watching great bakers like you.❤
He's amazing, isn't he?!?!
I actually began my baking journey with his videos! Thorough and helpful tips and directions for advanced and beginner. He's my go-to for recipes
I believe John has a teaching background and it shows.
I have found the perfect sugar cookie recipe after years of trying different ones. The perfect recipe is just like a chocolate chip recipe...omit thr chocolate chips of course...Use all sugar and omit the brown sugar. Roll the dough into balls and then roll in sugar. Everyone loves all of my Christmas Cookies. 🙂
aaaa FINALLY ❤❤ i’ve seen all Your christmas baking videos and i was waiting for another oneee❤️
