Hot tip: cut your cookies, freeze them at least 1 night (fridge would do fine, doesn't have be the freezer). The flavor will taste better because the ingredients had time to rest AND they won't lose their lines when baked. They will keep their sharp lines. I drop cookies in the tray straight from the fridge. They always cooked evenly. Might need 2/3 minutes more but at least they look fresh.
Mother always refrigerated her sugar cookie dough before rolling it out for the cookie cutters. The dough was already ready, so I never learned to make her sugar cookie dough. The first time I tried on my own was a sticky mess and I never tried again. But I have wonderful memories of making sugar cookies with Mom during school Christmas break.
@@MaritaCovarrubias01 perhaps you might find the room in the fridge to put the cookie dough rolled in wax paper (my mother did that) or plastic wrap overnight or for several hours. She also kept half of the dough chilled in the fridge while we worked with the other half. Mom’s cookies were delicious and I have great memories of helping my mother make those sugar cookies at Christmas time.
Sugar cookies hold such great memories for me. Mom would wait until school was on Christmas break to make sugar cookies and other baked goods. I was her happy helper. Our cookies weren’t fancy frosted - we used regular sugar, colored sugars, cinnamon red hots, those minuscule multi-colored sprinkles and the silver balls that would probably break my teeth now. I also chopped the various candied fruits for her fruit cake, perhaps that where my love of jewels started. It was great spending time with my mother. Rest in Heavenly Peace, Mother.
Those are some of the best memories to have. I remember doing the same with my grandma, was always in the kitchen with her. She was an amazing baker and most of our recipes came from family and have been passed down. Can’t wait to do this with my nephews and kids and to pass it down
Y’know, one of the thing that helps in these videos is seeing what’s “normal” in a given situation. Yeah, I use that word sparingly but I’m talking about things like what a mixer does to the dough. I didn’t have the budget for a Kitchenaid when I got my stand mixer. I have a smaller, well reviewed, low end stand mixer and it has a weird quirk at low speeds, where the speed goes up and down constantly. I still have no idea if it’s supposed to do that but it gets the job done. I’ve made meringues with it so I knew it functioned but I still appreciate the reassurance. Even when it works it nags at you that maybe something’s wrong and that you might need to replace it, but I just don’t use it often enough right now to sink money into a better one.
I've baked for 25 years and have always hated homemade sugar cookies. Hated. Until I made these! These were so amazing, I substituted the vanilla with honey and made a cream cheese icing, and they were mouthwatering! Thank you so much
Thank you! For decades my family has made sugar cookies with the premade tube dough. I copied all your instructions down and measured the flour as you said. These were the best sugar cookies I have seen since my grandma was around. 😂I was so excited when I saw how the dough came out. I shared the recipe and the video with my mom, so now we can make homemade sugar cookies again 🎉 I’m almost in tears because the sentimental value is so deep- truly grateful!
I’ve tested many cookie recipes and this is probably the best tasting and the cookies also look good. No spread, just a little brown on edges, perfect. Let’s see if these last until they are decorated.
Okay so I made the cookie dough for these sugar cookies two days ago. I had to do trial run before thanksgiving. so last night I baked up a few of the cookies. and let me just say this and brag on you some. John these cookies are yes, very easy sugar cookies and they are oh so delicious. Not too sweet and have that good twang-ness to them. Very, very delicious. So of course, this morning during coffee time, I had to do the coffee test. and yup I tell you this they held together so very well after dunking for at least four seconds. and we all know cookies usually fall apart, nuh uh, not these LOL! So, I want to say thank you for sharing this and this is Hands Down my go to Sugar Cookie Recipe! :)
I’ve been making butter cookies since 1960. My mother gave me a pillsbury holiday pamphlet from 1950. Priceless memories! I still have the book. 😂❤ Merry Christmas!
I just saw a tip on how to soften butter faster! Read that if you get get two glasses and put boiling hot water in them, then dump the water out. After put the cups over the butters and in a few minutes it should be room temp! Wanted to share, haven’t tried tho. Thanks for the great channel ✨
I always love your videos, feel like you are Bob Ross for baking! Think this is the first time I've ever commented on anyones video but just wanted you to know how great you are.Would love to see some more tart recipes!
I LOVE that you use a scale to measure ingredients. I started doing that after the first time I saw one of your videos over two years ago. It really makes a difference and I wish all recipes everywhere included the weight measurements.
We always just added a pinch of colored sugar by rubbing thumb and forefinger together. Brushing with a little melted butter and pressing into the sprinkles sounds very yummy.
I have never been able to cook or bake. But I’ve been on maternity leave this year and came across your blog and UA-cam channel and I’ve tried your sugar cookies as well as a bunch of cake and dinner recipes and they’ve all turned out amazing!! 😭 My husband has been so impressed haha. I went from burning pasta on the regular to actually making delicious Alfredo from scratch. I made sugar cookies for my daughters first birthday and everyone loved them, people were actually fighting over them! 😂 You are so wonderful to watch and make things so easy to understand and give the best tips!! Thank you sooo much!!!! ❤
Nothing better than a woman's home made cookies from a cookie loving man's perspective. I'm happy for your husband. My ex wouldn't cook or bake anything.
My dads partner made deicoous sugar cookies. He also had the same relaxing demure when he baked my father was the chef his partner the pastry chef! But my mother was the cookie master! She made enough of a variety to share with the neighbors and our friends. Christmas is the hardest time still 46 yrs later still miss her
I barely comment but this recipe is THE recipe. I’ve made it in my kitchen, in friends kitchen, froze them, i’ve kept some in a close box for like 10days : always amazing ! One time i forgot they were in the oven and got them out all tanned up, they were crispy and the inside still soft. 10/10

I was afraid that I would be wasting my ingredients and it would not turn out, but your YT sessions take the fear out of making many things. I also live in a place without good Indian restaurants. I have made your naan and the chicken tikka masala. HEAVEN. Thank you for being you.

Thank you! I've never understood my sugar cookie issues (so your info on dough cracking, flour when rolling out the dough, baking time, decorating, weighing flour, etc. is a great help ). The grocery store premade dough is OK, but nothing like home made, non preservative and who knows what else, cookies.
I made your sugar cookies a lot of times(esp special occasions) and decided to sell it in our school. Everyone loved it and wanted me to make more! Thank you so much!
I love this recipe sm, I did the cookies today and my family loved them! (I’m a 16 year old that wants to get into baking so I start with some easy ones lol)

Thanks for being you, thanks for making us laugh and that’s for teaching us ❤️ I am so grateful to have come across your channel 🙏🏼
the sugar cookies with the color sugar sprinkles are my favorite. I love Freshness Guaranteed cookies.😋💖 the only time I got to eat them was on holidays at school or someone brought some to a party. I use to like the cookies with frosting, but cause my mom bought them so many times I got tired of them and my sister would eat most of them herself.
I love adding almond flavoring in mine. Love your apron..so festive for the holidays. I'm hosting a cookie exchange at our church. I'll be making these (decorated) for each of the other ladies.
I’ve made this exact cookie recipe many many times John, perfect every time and you are free to decorate in any way you like, we used to enjoy decorating with my daughter, especially with different colours of sanding sugars or Royal icing, always so much fun to do together, we never forgot the fun we had. Thank you for sharing with us, it brought back so many fun and loving memories for us….many thanks John💕 Enjoy the rest of your week and thanks again for sharing this video, certainly looking forward to the next one!!! 🍪 Tina 🍪
Just wondering this recipe doesn't call for corn starch but your original no spread sugar cookies had corn starch no baking powder. So wondering if there was a reason for the change.
Thanks for your great recipes and informative videos John! I look forward to them. I've tried one of your old sugar cookie recipes from a video where you used corn starch, but I noticed that your most recent ones don't include it. Is there a reason you don't use it anymore? Thank you and keep 'em coming!
You are always my go-to baker every time and I have been DELIGHTED with this recipe as it warmed up my home with the smell of fresh baked cookies this winter, my family loved them and will definitely going to be making more in the future! Happy Holidays! ☺
I would *LOVE* to see your perfection on Butter Tarts. A Canadian classic. Please!! I use *so many* of your recipes as my go-to for my yearly baking spree.. I always know I can trust it to be good!
I have to say I’m a little sad you changed your recipe. Your old recipe (using cornstarch) is my go to. I’m glad I have it written down. It’s so much easier for kids to roll out and work with.
This!! I was shocked when I went to his site and he had changed the recipe…the cornstarch recipe is foolproof for avoiding spreading and having to re-cool the dough too often. This video of his uses the old recipe ua-cam.com/video/hvFNVAOvOXk/v-deo.htmlsi=BZ1L3kpnOQYbMPdL

Hi John! I wanted to share with you that this year I’m including a link to your recipe and video as part of a holiday gift to my employees - I have a large team of 35! I love this recipe of yours, and others too! I’m gifting a sweet treat along with a snowflake cookie cutter and greeting card with a QR code liked to this video! Thanks for making their holiday a little more sweeter!! ❄️⛄️
Hi from a very hot South Africa, thank you for this delicious recipe. I just made a batch n they taste divine. I had to keep them in the freezer first before baking cos it’s hot in December here.
Some days I just come and watch John explain and walk through the process it’s just cathartic to listen to him gently narrate the nifty details one of the best food bloggers /authors in my humble opinion. Thanks for sharing @PreppyKitchen ☺️🙏🏻and Happy Holidays in advance. 🎄
Hi John, enjoy your channel not only because your baking instructions are so easy to follow, but also because you have such a nice personality. Congrats these cookies are delicious and with your icing have a heavenly taste !! Looking forward to your next video and buying your book soon. Best regards from Germany where I now live 👋
Hi John, These look delicious! I’ve been making sugar cookies on my own since I was 12 (48 years)! It’s my absolute favorite cookie! Recently I used your buttercream frosting recipe for the Halloween sugar cookies I made for my grandsons Halloween Cookie Decorating Party! The frosting did not disappoint!! Absolutely fabulous!! I am hoping we get to see you with your family making/decorating cookies this holiday season. I so enjoyed last years video watching Brian and Lachlan snagging cookies! 😂 It was the best! ❤🎄Cheers!
These are the ultimate Christmas cookie! Can you provide a link for the snowflake cutter, my favorite also, so pretty. You make everything look so easy and wonderful! Happy Holidays!
Thank you so much for all your recipes. They are spot on. Many recipe's I collected through the years are missing something but yours are delicious and easy to make. I give you 10 stars not only 5. Hahaha.👍🙏
Ever tried flavoring the icings? Adding a bit of cocoa or replacing liquid with maple syrup or a even a strong fruit juice (concord grape and cherry juice work) make for nice variety in the cookies. Maple and cocoa also work for colors, though the juices tend to need help.
Barnes N Noble had desserts in their cages when I worked there many years ago. They had a white chocolate, milk chocolate caramel toffee bar that was to die for. I bet you could make it!!!

However, it tends to make a person doubt everything the mixer does so seeing that even a nicer mixer lets ingredients clump at the bottom of the bowl tells me that mine isn’t too bad. I’ve made meringues with it so I knew it functioned but I still appreciate the reassurance. Even when it works it nags at you that maybe something’s wrong and that you might need to replace it, but I just don’t use it often enough right now to sink money into a better one.

Thanks for posting! I'm planning on baking sugar cookies with my daughter and my sister for Thanksgiving morning
Thank you for sharing with us, it brought back so many fun and loving memories for us….many thanks John💕
Enjoy the rest of your week and thanks again for sharing this video, certainly looking forward to the next one!!!

I just love these videos. He's the perfect host. No other chef compares to his presentation. Thank you for great instructions and entertainment ❤
Just wondering this recipe doesn't call for corn starch but your original no spread sugar cookies had corn starch no baking powder. So wondering if there was a reason for the change.
I hope he answers ❤
Came here in 2024 to ask the same thing! 🤔
I made the Scottish short bread, and they were great! So now I'm going to try these.
I never have luck with making cutout cookies, but I am going to try these! They do seem pretty simple.
I made this recipe and the cookies were perfect!!!!! ♥️
Thanks for your great recipes and informative videos John! I look forward to them. I've tried one of your old sugar cookie recipes from a video where you used corn starch, but I noticed that your most recent ones don't include it. Is there a reason you don't use it anymore? Thank you and keep 'em coming!
I have been wondering the same thing!
Yeah. I am wondering about it too. Why not use cornstarch this time? Hope he can clarify it for us 🫶🏻
Hello!!! You have two different recipes for sugar cookies. One with cornstarch and one without… which is best? What’s the difference? Thanks!
You are always my go-to baker every time and I have been DELIGHTED with this recipe as it warmed up my home with the smell of fresh baked cookies this winter, my family loved them and will definitely going to be making more in the future! Happy Holidays! ☺
This recipe worked well! Soft buttery cookies. They did stick to my counter a bit so I’ll try a pastry mat next time!
I would *LOVE* to see your perfection on Butter Tarts. A Canadian classic. Please!!
I use *so many* of your recipes as my go-to for my yearly baking spree.. I always know I can trust it to be good!
Thank you. I've been wanting to try to make sugar cookies. Giving this ago for christmas
The snowflakes are also my favorite
I have to say I’m a little sad you changed your recipe. Your old recipe (using cornstarch) is my go to. I’m glad I have it written down. It’s so much easier for kids to roll out and work with.
Can you post the recipe here in the comments please? Thank you 🙏
I was also surprised with the recipe change. But I do think they taste better without the cornstarch. Just refrigerate a bit longer.
@@kelseywolak2928thank you for the link and the tip.
You are truly amazing. Your videos have opened doors for me in regards to how fun baking can be!
Any time I want to make a new thing, my first check is to see if you have a recipe for it! ❤
I was thinking of doing some sugar cookies. And here you are with it.
You have so many little tips and tricks. Wonderful video. Thank you!
Omgosh I think I can smell these cookies!!! 😮 I’m definitely using this recipe for my Christmas cookies! 🎄Thanks ❤
Lmao
Whenever I need a specific recipe or something new, I check your channel out. These were great! Thank you!
Hi from a very hot South Africa, thank you for this delicious recipe. I just made a batch n they taste divine. I had to keep them in the freezer first before baking cos it’s hot in December here.
this was literally the recipe i found online, i noticed everything he said sounded familiar from the recipe, i love it! ❤😂
I just made cookies from your recipe 4 years ago! I didn’t realize it’s been updated
I'm getting ready to do some cut-out cookies, thanks for all the great tips!!!
Some days I just come and watch John explain and walk through the process it’s just cathartic to listen to him gently narrate the nifty details one of the best food bloggers /authors in my humble opinion. Wonderfully insightful and such a brilliant teacher (his teaching background shines through this). Those look scrumptious et so simple to make. Thanks for sharing @PreppyKitchen ☺️🙏🏻and Happy Holidays in advance. 🎄
❤
I made these today thank you they came out delicious
Oh this is now my favorite sugar cookie recipe! So easy and delicious! 😍
Absolutely love your recipes, so much so I plan to gift your book to people I know who love or are trying to learn cooking/baking 🥰
Thank you very much for this incredible recipe I’ve just tried it and it turned out amazing
❤🎄Cheers!
Yes! Do another family cookie video please! It was so much fun!
This recipe is wonderful! And the easy icing too. Thank you so much
I’ve made my dough, it’s in the fridge ready to bake on Christmas Eve! Thank you! Happy Christmas to you and your family 🎄🤗
Hahaha.👍🙏
I was always taught to add juice and grind if one lemon! When I lived in Mexico I added a lime!
Yum, your cookies look so perfect! How do they do with freezing after they've been baked?
Ever tried flavoring the icings? Adding a bit of cocoa or replacing liquid with maple syrup or a even a strong fruit juice (concord grape and cherry juice work) make for nice variety in the cookies. Maple and cocoa also work for colors, though the juices tend to need help.
Your my favorite person to watch for delicious treats, especially I’m in pastry school
Barnes N Noble had desserts in their cages when I worked there many years ago. They had a white chocolate, milk chocolate caramel toffee bar that was to die for. I bet you could make it!!!
