The Advance Variation is the most precise way for white to fight the Caro-Kann Defense, but it's also an extremely solid position for black, who creates a pawn triangle in the center and resolves the problem of „the bad bishop“.

Caro-Kann Defense, B12 Advance Variation - Chess Openings for Tournament Players
The advance variation became the most popular way for white to fight the Caro-Kann, it even surpassed the main lines which occur after 3.Nc3 for white. White simply advances his e pawn, gaining central space and getting more room for maneuvering. In exchange, black is able to play Bf5 fast, getting rid of his potentially worst piece, and he can then close down his pawn triangle with e6. Black thus has a perfectly solid central structure and white gets more space in exchange.
There are many approaches to the Advance Caro-Kann for white (and white gets to choose the variation on move 4). Here are the most common lines:
1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.e5 Bf5 4.Nf3 - Short Variation (the positional approach for white, simply developing, castling short and using the space advantage later on)
1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.e5 Bf5 4.Nc3 - Van der Wiel Attack (a very aggressive line for white, black is sacrificing his h5 pawn in exchange for some queenside initiative but both sides have great attacking chances)

Here's a great tool for learning openings: chessbook.com/hanging-pawns
Chessbook allows you to import and practice your repertoire. It focuses on moves people actually play as well as your mistakes. Connect it to your lichess or chess com accounts to correct the biggest gaps in your repertoire!
I know some of these videos are quite new but I can't believe how few views they have. You provide extremely clear and concise explanations. Your channel is much underrated and I hope you gain a lot more deserved exposure soon.
Thanks for saying that! I'm glad you think the explanation is clear enough. As for exposure, my channel is still quite new, and I think growth may come over time if I continue to work. Thanks for the wishes, though!
I agree. Enthusiastically! Keep up the good work!
@@HangingPawns Yeah I just wanted to say thanks for making these. You are by far my favorite chess resource. Every time my opening gets crushed with some new variation I come back here and you always provide thorough summaries and good references for where to get more information. I've had university teachers put less effort into their lessons. It's like finding a good math teacher who helps make the struggle easier. It means a lot.
bro This world works on the principle of all the more trivial the more views you get, it is natural that this content does not get views because it is content that is not trivial, and in the end I hope that the owner of the channel knows how much respect I have for him
It has 200k views now. ;)
These videos are much better than any opening book😁
I'm happy you find them useful:) I hope the full collection will be a useful tool for learning basic theory. Still around 180 to go:D
@@HangingPawns Two years later and still among the very best chess videos in general and the best concerning caro kann.
Im learning the Caro kann and this is very useful
@@HangingPawnsthanks for this video it so much better that any chess videos i wish this channel would already have 10 mil subs! :D
Does this channel have book theory
A life saver. I won All my games as black with the caro-kann at my local tournament! Thanks for the concise yet in-depth explanations!
No problem:) I'm glad you found the explanations useful!

Thank you
Given the surge of popularity in chess, your channel is severely underrated and criminally underviewed. Thanks to creators like you and GothamChess, I've gone from 1000 - 1300 in Rapid in 3 months. You're awesome.
It's very effective how you repeat the main ideas and introductory moves, it really reinforces the knowledge. I wonder if you are a teacher?
Keep coming back to this, thanks.
Thanks for saying that! I'm not a teacher, no, but I try to create content that can help people learn.:)
@@HangingPawns You are very didactic, it turns you into a teacher, a good one, by the way.
No other channel has such clear and concise opening analysis. Thanks for uploading.
No problem, and thanks a lot for saying that. It's great to hear that!
Extremely clear overview of each line. Thanks so much!
I don't have words to say that how well the opening concept are explained. Thanks you so so much. These are really very helpful.
I hope your channel gets more recognition❤️
just a side note: for those who like me plays 3. ... c5 in response to advance variation it would be helpful to look at GM Igor Khenkin games. He scored very good in this variation. Someday maybe I will learn the main line with Bf5 but it seems to me to be very theoretical heavy.
Thanks for the imput! I think the Bf5 main line is heavy in theory, but it's much more comfortable to play than c5. I will check out Khenkin's games:)
Thank you very much for all of your videos. I was looking for Caro-Kann and here it is. You are amazing at this so keep it up!!!
You go through the variations so well, thank you for such a brilliant explanation!
Thanks for the great illustration and showing all the variations with clear way of teaching
Thanks! I have been learning some CK lines for white, but this is the clearest explanation of the options
Another great video! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. You are so thorough and clear!
Watching your videos is taking my chess to the next level. Thank you so much.
Thank you so much... These are comprehensive for new players.. And really very helpful.. GM Akobian and you are my favourite teachers.. Thanks again.
This helped me a lot! Thanks dude
Thanks for your stuff. Very precise and helpful
You are doing a very, very good job.
Great tutorial!!!
Thank you and bravo for the effort!
This is the best chess channel I ve found on UA-cam. Great work and very clear explanation of ideas and plans. Excellent work. Thanks a lot.
I'm very happy to hear you say that! It gave me an instant confidence boost!:D
Wow, just another incredible video. Thanks so much.
Thank you for excellent instruction. So glad you put the names in a list above you as the closed captioning comes out for instance in the Van der Wiel attack comes out as the Wonder Wheel attack.....LOL.
This channel is INSANE, I love it!!!!
Thanks for those videos! You are awesome!
You're a great teacher. Thank you
Great video! Thanks for the overview! I'll have to study up on the c4 lines.
Thank you so much for everything ❤
Excellent, thank you!
Thanks for your videos, they are very very instructive.
Man you didn’t skip a beat. Subbed.
Very well done. Thanks!
Thanks for the instrumental overview of the advance variation and the bunch of telltale illustrations
Excellent analysis, thank you IM I am going to study all of your lessons with detail and improve my rating.
Thank you so much. It really helped
thanks for this Pal!
A great great great video! Not only a list of moves and variations but full of explanations of plans, ideas and reasons WHY one side play this move. Keep on doing like this. On chess24 I have looked into a video series of the Caro-Kann that is much more detailed but it just is a list of moves and possible moves and I never will remember this. But by your video I have understood the problems and advantages of the variations and these I can remember in my matches. So I am able to maybe find my own way continuing the match even if I have forgotten the right continuation... Great Job!
I absolutely love that the lines are listed on the side. That little detail really helps!
Great! Glad it helps.
Thank you Stefan.
Thanks sir, you explained in well manner, u r really good in analysis
Great content, thanks a bunch!
Thanks Sir. Great video
Best chess chanel! Thanks!🙂
Very lucid and concise. Thank you!
No problem! I'm glad you think so!
Best training channel I've found period.
I have read many book about the caro-kann but still I learn a lot with your videos. And I like the way you explain things ! Thank you!
No problem! I'm glad you think so and that I managed to help! Cheers
Your videos on chess are the best.
Please keep up!
This channel has Probably the most in depth series that exists on the caro kann and other related openings. 👍
Amazing explanation!
Great video!
I am currently exploring the Caro Kann and took some important notes from your video,
Your explanation is very good but can you provide the notes also in the description it will be more helpful. You are a good teacher. Thank you for your opening videos
Thanks for this video. I've been having great success with the caro-kann defense, but the advanced variation has been crushing me
Excellent video, I expected more videos from your side
I come back to this series all the time
Nice video
Continue to make such good videos
great guide
Awesome video, pairs nicely with a study companion such as Chessable or LiStudy.
thank u for the video
Good video!!!
Good stuff!
This helped me alot for my comeback match as I am originally a CaroKann player and needed to brush up my memory about this defense! Explanation is too clear. Thank you so much.
No problem:)
BEST CHESS YT OUT THERE
thank u so much!!!!
I. Have seen these series 3 times thanks sir...
i've been employing the st george and often back into a similar position as the main line. thank you for your help
1. e4 a6
2. d4 c6
3. Nf3 d5
4. e5 Bf5
What a guide!
Great presentation. even a novice like me can understand it. Just stumbled on to your channel. Do keep going on. I have been studying your Caro kann defense. Excellent.
Thank you for the feedback. I'm very happy to hear that:)
I guess I start with checking out the 4.c4 sidline, and before that: your introduction video ;-) Thanx for this great overview!
No problem:)
Thank you
Buona domenica a te! Caro Amico Mio! Again, very instructive! 🔱
Great video! Thanks.
No problem:) I'm glad you found it useful!
thanks i learned the scandinavian and this is very useful if they push
Thanks 👍
Thank you for this. I love playing the Tartakower, so I struggle against e5 lines.
Extraklasse!
Amazing video! The 4.c4 sideline you mention though is nowhere near as uncomfortable and I think easy to play if you play 5.Bb4, because like you said you gotta start thinking about that bishop if white is threatening of locking it out. 5Ke7 looks a bit masochistic ahah. Thanks again!
Exactly what I needed. Just played a game against the advance short variation and my follow-up wasn't great. Had no room to operate. Won, but I shouldn't have. Now I know how to turn it to my advantage.
Why did no one think of doing this earlier...
I guess they did, just not as in depth and well read.
Thanks for the help!
c4 as the sidelines are really improving the game and the perception of the opening.
thanks for these detailed explanations.saves me from reading those thick books
Great content. Thank you for sharing. I'm new to playing the caro and have learned a ton. One question -- what are the "general" plans for castling in the advance caro? Seems this is delayed in many lines? Any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks again.
You deserve more views sir
Ur videos are really great😘
Thank you again:)
a great video
Thank you very much sir !in the spirit of Mikhail Tal
how do you only have 3.3k subs? you have so much really good in depth content and its organized nicely in playlists. I don't get it. The only thing I can note is your accent is pretty thick and normally people don't like to listen to a thick accent for so long. But that doesn't explain only 3.3k on such a good channel.
Excellent video! Im learning the Caro Kann and just got a lot of ideas from this, thank you!!! Btw, whats the name of the czech gm?
One thing that I would like to mention is that tough it is very good to exchange the light squared bichop on move four, black looses a king defender, so it's important to place a knight close to him and perhaps a bichop on f8 so we won't get mated.
You make great videos sir! After recently stumbling upon a beautiful Advance-Caro game Alexey Shirov-Anatoly Karpov (Las Palmas 1994) I fell in love with C-K. Best of luck with your road to GM-title!
Thank you!! I really appreciate your support. Let me know if you need any help with CK:)

That's what i've found in an old greek chess book(1967).It's from the White's point of view:4.c4 e6 5.Nbc3 dxc4 6.Bxc4 Nge7 7.Nge2 Nbd7 8.0-0 Ndb6 9.Bb3 Qd7 10.a4 (in order to prevent Black's Quineside castling)10...a5 11.Neg3 Bg6 with the White intending f4 & f5
Thank you for this entire series of Caro-Kann opening theory. You explain it very well and patiently. A question I have is: could you recommend a website or an app to use to study more challenging positions like the 4.c4 sideline with engine support? Thank you so much in advance. I hope both you and your family are alright. We haven't gotten a new video in almost 2 weeks ;).
Lichess and chessbase
Hi Stephan, i think you should do another video about sistems with f4 in the advanced caro-kann, i struggle a lot when i face it as black
According to the lichess opening explorer also 4. Nd2 seems to be quite popular on a top level (played by So, Navara or Caruana)
Against 4. Nd2 you can just play dxe4 and Nf6 and play like the Tartakower Caro Kann
when i was playing the Bf5 line in blitz games, a lot of people were playing g4 against me, i now play c5 instead, because a lot of players arent familiar with it
I used to do that when I was playing e4 as white XD. I played the Caro Kann also (but with 3. ... c5) and I really liked idea of using the bishop as a tempo gainer for expanding on the king side and most likely attacking that side. It always caused the opponents to resign early.
But the 3. ... c5 variation also has lines against it (which is why nearly everyone recommends bf5 instead) but I have not faced a single opponent who knows the slightest amount of theory about it.
Great video, very informative.
I have a question about the light-squared bishop though.
- In the 5...c5 variation of the main line (short variation), you mention that you don't move the bishop but protect it with Ne7 because you want to get rid of the bishop.
- In the Bronstein variation however you do move the bishop instead of protecting it with Ne7.
Why is that?
First of all : Thank you for the introduction. I'm now using the Caro-Kann-Defense as my main weapon with black an even analysed it , but isn't in the 3.c3-Variation or Botvinnik-Variation the bishop on b5 hanging , because of queen to a5+?
I've fallen for that too but white can play Nc3 blocking check and defending the bishop
What i play in that horrible line for white( 17:17 ) is Qa5+ and after that Qa4. If the queens are exchanged mating attacks aren't gonna happen and develops my knight. If they aren't exchanged then it's hard to castle kingside for white.
