Hikaru's memory is so impressive that you don't even realise it until he starts rattling off a four knights Scotch variation that he played when he was a baby and remembers because of a vaguely similar pawn structure. It's incredible
What cracks me up is how Hikaru can turn 1 game into 1,000 possibilities. Don't get me wrong, it's super helpful for me as a beginner to see how to defend traditional openings, but it's hilarious how far he goes 😂
There are many variables in chess, therefore it is imperative that he glosses over a handful of different positional possibilities for each move. Or else he would just sound like Levi (Gotham Chess). Who wants that?

Man, this is so good! Thanks a lot! Extremely educational! Btw, always amazed by how accurately and fast you're able to spot tactical opportunities, while at the same time you're showing the positional long-term plans in the positions
I don’t wanna shout out anyone here, but buying courses on this kind of stuff is usually the way to go. youtube videos like these can be good to warn you of simple threats but courses is usually where you’re taught sidelines. But also it’s the mainline for a reason, if they play anything else then they’re most likely just making mistakes that you need to learn to take advantage of
Hikaru is just too good. The level of understanding of themes, principles and just plain theory memory is mind blowing. Unfortunately if makes me realise I'm going to struggle to get past my 1300 level without serious work.
Late on this vid, but I hoped Naka highlighted the game more on the black's perspective cause Karo is a definitive black opening. I am in the midst of learning Karo but I always stumble on the idea of the e4 pawn moving forward instead of trading, limiting my early development.
I had a great game the other playing as black. After 3.f3 e5 it went like this 4.dxe5 Bc5 5.exd5 Qb6 6.Ne2 Bf2+ 7. Kd2 Qe3#. I felt like a GM after that 7 move checkmate
@@GMHikaru well for what it's worth now, you give each other a good run for your money and put up the greatest show, and the margin is pretty wide with others. So way to go Hikaru.
Why not the pirc defense next? A great way to create imbalance for intermediate while not having to learn too much theory. The plans are simple, and it being a rare opening (while still being solid) increases the chance white will blunder. I would love for you to cover the pirc.
While these seem like mostly theory focused, I would love if you tried to convey how should we think about chess as a game, what should I be considering before making a move? Is it just about memorising lines? Maybe it's just me but I tend to learn much better with teachers who teach mental framework for handling systems, a teach a man how to fish type of situation if you get what I mean.
This came out at the perfect time. I'm going to prep this opening for a match tomorrow against my boss, if I win I get his wizards chess board and if I lose ill have to grow a handlebar mustache.
I mean after e4 c6 d4 d5 exd5 cxd5 Bd3 Nc6 Nf3 Nf6 h3 g6 O-O Bg7, then Nc3 is potentially a better move than c3/c4. I'm not sure how often anyone would ever encounter a line like this, but it definitely has happened before. Who knows :P
If Hikaru reviewed my games he'd have grey hair by the time the video was over.
Pineapple hikaru would, but disrespect hikaru wouldn't.
Well me too. 1200 and i sometimes cringe while reviewing my own game.

Great video, Naka! I feel like the Na4 maneuver also works nicely against Tarrasch structures with pawns on c6 and d5 (Rubinstein-Salwe, 1908).
That emphasis on the early pawn advancement makes so much sense after you explain it. Thank you. 🙏
Thanks for the free lesson hikaru the fact you share your knowledge is dope
