Showdown: 2022 Harley-Davidson Road Glide vs Indian Pursuit Limited Premium

  • You can't go bigger than these two, so there's no point in going home. With big frame-mounted fairings, top trunks, luxurious seating for two and all the appointments American V-twin riders want, it's a shame we only had four days and one state to shake them out. Still, we're honored to carry on the fine old tradition of Harley versus Indian.

Challenger has Brembo brakes w/ braided lines, rising wind screen, high end Fox rear shock and incredibly designed chassis proven by its race wins. It is a monster of an American cruiser right out of the box.
The HD is a work of art, but its age shows especially performance wise. Might be time for a complete chassis overhaul.

"Harley updated the frame significantly a few years ago". Not quite , it was back in 2009. That's an area of neglect on Harleys part. just jumping on the band wagon of reviews here. I test road a Indian Challenger which the Pursuit is based off. I was considering a 2nd bike for long distance touring purposes., since I still have a sport bike for my need for speed. Having road both Harley and Indian I can tell you the Harley with the 114 cu motor has more than enough passing power for touring and commuting needs since the torque comes early without the need for down shifting. That said, the Indian Challenger was a rocket, was very fast and fun. The suspension on the Indian felt a bit more plush and at high speeds ( 80+ mph touring mode) the Harley felt more planted on the rode. Coming from a sport bike I preferred a more planted feeling at higher touring speeds. Although I did like the Indian, I ended up getting the Road Glide Special for the overall fit and finish, quality and craftsmanship. As soon as I bought it, the Harley dealership manager said "welcome to the family". I go on HOG chapter rides with other Harley owners and enjoy the camaraderie, community, and huge dealer and service network. I still may buy an Indian in the future but I'm very happy with my Road Glide Special. To each his own personal preference, but honestly they are both great touring bikes and either can be modified to suit personal taste.

Last year, I rode to Sturgis. On the first day, the two guys who rode with me and I put in 820 miles. Their bikes were a few years older than mine (I had a new ‘21). I could have EASILY gone another 180 miles. Both of them were finished. They said no way. I do think these bikes have improved in recent years. The competition between the two companies is good for the consumer.

I'm happy that we have more for options now. What I'd really like to see is something happen with Indian that is similar to what happened with HD in its AMF days where a dedicated group of brand fans bought HD and took it independent. While Polaris seems to be doing great by Indian it would still be nice to see Indian become independent so that Polaris could bring back the Victory brand. That would give us even more choices. Of course some healthy rivalry is good too so that no matter what you ride you get a quality product giving smiles for miles.

Harley's been around for 120 years...their quality is unmatched, it's not an apples to apples comparison at all. Also, don't forget what Polaris did with Victory, a lot of people got burned. I would not buy an Indian for this reason alone. My Victory had all the cool bells and whistles too. I talked shit to all the Harley guys about better engines and all that as well. Then less than a year later I was screwed. I went from loving my bike to being ashamed of it. Stay away from Indian, they won't be around in 10 years I'm telling you. I for the life of me can never understand it when someone says that the road glide handles better than the challenger. I've put quite a few miles on both bikes and the challenger just blows the road glide out of the water when it comes to handling. It feels like I'm on a sport bike when I'm riding the challenger. The road glide I always felt like I had to man handle it too much into corner and keep it there. My buddy said it prefect the other day, "The people build their road glides to perform the way the challenger does straight from the factory". As far as looks go the road glide wins that hands down all day long in my opinion.

In all honesty I’ve always wanted the bike that I have but unfortunately can’t keep it and also purchase a pursuit so that’s why I asked a question would it be a big improvement over my current bike or it would be the same just a newer bike.

Man there were 2 options for American branded tour bikes Victory made 2. Indian is using features from both of them bikes on the challenger and pursuit

I test Rode almost everything in Harley's line up for 21&22 but the CVO RG i fell in love with. I was never a Harley guy because they are out of my league $
I want to test the Indian now. But it's hard to beat the Fit & Finsh on the Harley's.

The winner in these discussions, is..... The customer. Who now has a vastly better choice for American V-Twin touring, and a market with completion where Indian is forcing HD to get off it's duff, and actually be competitive. It's no surprise that HD finally had to upgrade its 1920's pushrod tractor engine technology, to the Revolution Max.

Im going to start off by saying i dont own either of these bikes, nor am i loyal to either brand. As a realist, im going to lay it down as honestly as possible. I know the Indian vs Harley debate is going to go on forever...its kinda like Camaro vs Mustang...there's no answer, it's all personal. I've riden both of these bikes for extensive comparisons in the past. Each have their strengths and weaknesses, and I am going to say up front, I am very picky. The Roadglide has to catch up in terms of power, some great features, and maybe a bit on the handling front. Indian has it beat when it comes to those aspects. On a bike demanding that much money, the engine shouldnt only have 90HP. I know it has enough twist to pull a house off its foundation, but sorry Harley guys, it runs out of steam compared to the Challenger in top end. Not all of us ride at 65, some like rolling at 80, and ripping out to pass without breaking a sweat. We also don't want to have to buy a bike, then spend another 4,5,6 grand on Stage 1, 2, 3...or whatever to get the ripping high rpm power. The Harley M8 114 is by NO means slow or underpowered, its just not quite like the Indian stock to stock. On the flip side, hands down without even the slightest doubt, the Roadglide beats the Challenger in terms of build quality and attention to detail. Sorry Indian guys, it's the truth. Plastic covered chrome, uneven gaps, poor paint application, exposed wiring harnesses is not acceptable on a bike in this category and price. I don't care how fast it is, or how great the handling is. I need quality at this price point, little details, superb craftsmanship. Too much of Polaris shows through when it's supposed to be an Indian Challenger..the game changer. The lack of 'attention to detail' kills some of the really excellent traits the Challenger has in my opinion. If I was to choose one, I would go with the Roadglide in 2023. Indian needs to get their act together when it comes to quality. Just because it's fast, doesn't mean it's better. Ride safe everyone, and remember, it doesn't matter what we ride, as long as we roll on 2. Cheers

I love my Harley! I like certain things on the Indian but I feel my Harley handles far better than the Indian I test rode last Wednesday but my Harley in fairness has legends front/rear suspension and I have tall risers and like a pair of BMX style bars and other aftermarket stuff like 117 kit exhaust (Rinehart) and fueling cams k&n intake Dyno tune and it's got a nice audio package now thank God (it's loud real loud) so it makes some power and it plays tunes so it wasn't fair exactly a fair comparison also I am not sure what I drove was called the pursuit but the guy working seen what I pulled in on and said that whatever he let me ride was the closest thing oh and the ftr1200 that was a hoot though prob going to get one that's the 3rd test ride on one and I really like them

@@jfaulk5717 , that's the point sometimes, both out of necessity and desire. Not everyone wants stock anything. Look at cars and trucks on the road. People like to spend money on accessories that will never assist to appreciate in value.

Both really good bikes. Harley always has been about upgrades and customization. I'd choose Harley personally. On a side note once the woke crowd pays attention to the "Indian", you can bet there is gonna be a name change. (jk, but nowadays don't be surprised).

I’m just Glad Indian made a go after Harley sales… Living in North America I just get sick and tired of the Harley riders. Their mentality is truly laughable… they stick on every label possible to make themselves seem nostalgic. Most of them are just fat lazy morons. To the rest of us riders we just find it very amusing. Why pay for a bike that needs a pile of upgrades to make it useable. My sport tourer rips them to shreds, it’s not even comparable. Better handling, better power, better fuel mileage, better electronics and better weather protection, without cooking you to death in traffic. These bikes are almost 300lb heavier than my sports tourer….

The bikes don't need upgrades. People choose to upgrade them. So they can have their individual perspectives on their rides... Indian hasn't gotten there.

I own a road glide ultra and I love it. I was leaning toward the challenger but at the time I wanted the tour pack and the challenger didn’t have that option . I didn’t like the fairing on the challenger or the dash ( inner fairing) looks very much like a Yamaha just don’t like the ergonomics of it where as the road glide fairing flows also did not like the bars on the Indian. I made the right choice and love my glide.
