What I’ve come to notice about more recent gymnastics is that the skill level has increased, but the creativity and fearlessness has decreased.
blame the code of points
That makes little sense. How could the fearlessness decrease if the skill level has increased? It takes strength and stamina to complete a routine with more skills. This is why the skill level increases.
@@lilouloulou1993 Major rating changes happened in 2006, specific move ratings changed in 2017 to more difficult so became just not worth it wen the points didn’t gain #’s along w/the difficulty. Shit changed & they had to adapt.
@@lilouloulou1993 how about not blaming an entire country for the CoP changing? With the way the system is now, creativity doesn't get you wins anymore unless you're able to string together difficult turns and get connections for them (like sanne wevers did in Rio). Of course American gymnasts aren't gonna go for the risks to avoid injury and it's not worth it if they're able to score high enough regardless. European gymnasts still opt for more beautiful turns and leaps regardless so idk why you had to blame Americans. Not everyone copies their style of gymnastics
@@lilouloulou1993 hey now, the Soviet gymnast, Nellie Kim, created the Code of Points, not us Americans. The COP is unpopular here in USA despite our success with it.
I think Shawn Johnson should be included. Her routine was truly unique and I've never seen any other gymnast attempt anything like it.
Exactly.
And not a wobble in sight, unlike this display from Komova.
Erin Johnson with that said I love Victoria’s artistry. Her legs are nice and straight to the toe point
Yeah
Yeah Nastia Liukin too
Mustafina doing beam to the sound of the nutcracker is what dreams are made of lol great video!
These earlier routines are an art form. Bring back more hand balancing and creativity!
for real
I think they're missing Svetlana horkina Carly Patterson and the Romanian girl who's been around forever who did the full Tristan back handsprings what is her name because that romanian's name
Beam used to be more about strength, flexibility & control. I enjoy big tricks as much as anyone but sometimes I feel like the open-era scoring system has turned the beam into a 10cm wide floor exercise…
9:28
@@wheresbaby7783 You mean Larissa Iordache? The romanian girl...or some from before?
“Aliya is a class act” ....couldn’t agree more. I love watching her. She, Aly Raisman, and Simone Biles made the Rio Gymnastics Olympics so much fun to watch. All so phenomenal and strong.
Oh did they ever. Two others that I really enjoyed watching because they just had such a bubbliness to them- were China’s Wang Yan and our own Laurie Hernandez. They were just so happy throughout those games and really seemed to enjoy themselves there. That is definitely the spirit of the Olympics- enjoying the spirit of it. That and the Dutch team. They were wonderful to see.
Nothing beats old school ex-urss gymnastics. So elegant and graceful, you don’t see any of that today.
Wow I’m so glad you’ve included some gymnasts from the 80s (the Soviet days...) I didn’t know they were already performing full-ins on the beam and full twisting doubles for dismounts. Not only were they more balletic on the beam back then, but not at all behind acrobatically either!
Those Russian routines were no joke
OMG! Thanks for posting, because I have never seen some of those routines! I'm always so fascinated by really good balance beam routines; they seem like magic!
Shanon Miller...no fault...no wobble...perfect form...serious level of control.
Miller is #1 on this list. I saw zero deductions.
Followed by #2 Bo and #3 Gutsu.
On the other hand, Komova wobbled on every move.
Aliya Mustafina will always by my favourite gymnast but I have to say that Yelena Shushunova just defied the beam. It's like she willed it to be a regular floor and proceeded without any iota of uncertainty. Breathtakingly assured performance.
She really was brilliant. There’ve been a lot of advancements in gymnastics but I feel like beam is one event where modern gymnasts (with some exceptions) just don’t rate as well as gymnasts from the ‘80s, ‘90s & early ‘00s.
Shanna Miller is incredible! I wish more gymnasts did the old tricks- they were so elegant and look more complicated!
The way gymnastics used to be. Difficulty AND Artistry combined. Those were the good days
Blame the cop for forcing gymnasts to do not just more skills but more difficult skills at that. And they don’t even get more time, it’s 90 seconds like always. We’ve had great artistry on floor more recently like Morgan Hurd who didn’t do a wolf turn in her beam or floor. There was also Makayla Maroney who was after the good days but out-danced a lot of gymnasts even from the 90s. But overall I agree that it sucks we don’t have as much artistry, but it’s not entirely the gymnasts’ fault because of the higher standard for fitting in as many elements as possible.
@@rAvDoG420 I think a good way to address it is to create more artistry deductions.
Shannon's still gives me goosebumps I LIVE
Thanks for these videos. Tatiana's routine was gorgeous! I wish these days' beam routines were as graceful and beautiful
Laraine Rauch Which Tatiana? I think there were three.
I love watching beam because it's everything I look for in a gymnastics routine. Emphasis on execution, precision, accuracy, and balance, plus it's all self-propelled tumbling, unlike floor which has gotten progressively bouncer and gives a false impression of the extent of improvement on the athletes' part through the decades.
It's also why I prefer the older routines.
.
I too love beam above all else
The commentator for Aliya's routine was really comentating for people who already know gymnastics, how D and E scores are valued and Connection and Requirements. I LOVE IT!
Tatiana was an immortal on the beam... oh my God what an impeccable routine!!
💯💯💯
Witch Tatiana?😅
LOVE that you included Lyssenko's quote about the beam in there! Made me giggle!
Thank you so much for posting, these were amazing, and some clips hard to find. Dudnek especially was timeless gold.
Those were all great! Shannon Miller is my favorite gymnast of all time, so it was nice to see her routine in there. Aliya Mustafina and Viktoria Komova are quickly becoming favorites. I'd never even seen Tatiana Groshkova before, and that routine was brilliant. Tatiana Lysenko is my second favorite gymnast of all time, and I LOVE her quote about how "the beam obeys me;" that always makes me smile. If you're curious about another great routine from Tatiana Gutsu, search for her beam routine at the 1991 Trofeo Goofy; she scored a perfect 10 for that.
Dangg, Yang Bo and Olesia Dundik's routine (beside her horrendous split series lol) were testaments on how you can still be graceful have artistry and have a difficult routine. Nowadays gymnasts look like they're chucking skills instead of going through the motion
I enjoyed watching the older routines more so than the modern ones
you can thank simone biles for that.
@jonny boy ok
Beam is one event that I feel has a lost a lot in the open-scoring era. Gymnasts use to compete a lot more strength & flexibility elements on beam back when.
Shannon Miller on beam was amazing. I like the old beam routines where balance and precision and beautiful touches were rewarded.
Both are equally enjoyable. Today’s routines have, in all honesty more variety in skills, more connected skills and much harder acrobatic elements for the most part. The previous era had more stuck elements with fewer bobbles. Neither was better or worse.
Shannon miller's routine still gives me chills and makes me tear up.
Correct
Me too!!
I did not realize how great her beam routine was!
She made every move beautiful.
She wasn't all that
and also, to add to my last comment, I just wanna say how much I love balance beam because it’s the essential gymnastics apparatus. When people think of this sport they most likely think of “that skinny wood thing they flip on” as my grandma says haha. It’s arguably the most popular apparatus in all of gymnastics and it’s definitely the most challenging. I love it so much.
I’m so partial to Nastia Lukens beam routine , that’s the most beautiful and stunning I’ve ever seen . So fluid and graceful. Her extension of every move is mesmerizing 👑💗
Liukin’s beam routine was lovely! Along with Weaver she’s one of my faves from the open scoring era.
@@grahamstrouse1165Wevers can nothing except of spins..she can't even jump, no difficulty
3:46 moves like this are what I miss in modern gymnastics. Of course nowadays the routines are harder, but it doesn't look that artistic anymore. Sanne Wevers is a good example of how I think elegance and skill could be combined ☺️❤️
They should probably be different sports/disciplines
I wouldn’t say they’re harder these days, just different
How are they harder? I don’t see it.
I watched Shannon Miller win that gold as it happened....and i was STILL tense watching it. She's ALWAYS been my favorite!
Me too!
Same. 😊
Shannon Miller. Queen.
Chanel Oberlin please what? Miller was incredible.
Shannon Miller: always and forever
@Chanel Oberlin
I'm laughing at your choice of username, stupid.
Chanel Oberlin you need to grow the fuck up.
Amen!
Groshkova 😮😲 holy heck what routine
I was amazed
I gasped audibly when when she did that!
Stunning. But I couldn't stop thinking how old was she in that video. So tiny.
LASCHENOVA! I love her, so underrated. I love watching her on beam and floor especially, her yurchenko full was better than most who do it today as well. Lysenko, another favourite of mine.
I miss the days when the gymnasts didn’t just hop up on the beam to start and you didn’t see constant wobbling and falling. 😩
Shannon Miller killed it 🔥🔥🔥
I really love this top ten, thanks for this amazing compilation. I love Dudnik! 😍
Thank you for this. One of the best compilations I’ve seen. Of course, you could do another with your second tier…..
Yang Bo... Technically perfect!! Amazing difficulty flawlessly performed. Gorgeous.
Poor Yang Bo. Always the bridesmaid, never the bride. Like Vanessa Atler, she was her own worst enemy. 🤷♀️
I think Nastia Liukin 2008 beam routine should be on here. It was a beautiful routine with the artistic elements and elegance
The USSR's gymnastics were the best 😍
Elvis Alves wring. Chinese are the best beam workers!
Correction sir, the USSR gymnast used to be the best. China has some amazing beam athletes and USA has some of the greatest.
ОДНОЗНАЧНО!!!!
An Romanias Commenchi
I miss the Russians
All these gymnasts are amazing, and Mustafina is one of my all around favorites, but there's something about Elena Shushunova's beam routine (@8:55) that felt just a little shocking. Her movements were absolutely musical. I'm a total amateur, wannabe gymnast right now, but I'll be thinking of her.
7:50 wow, too bad the video was so grainy but that was an incredible pass! 3 back handspring layouts in a row. Unbelievable
I watch this video frequently. Love it.
Other favorites may not be on board, but it's so easy to find most of them, and vid creators aren't answerable to anyone but themselves as far as "my top 10 favorite" lists go. We can look around and find other Top Favorites...that much more to enjoy.
6:00 the Nutcracker music in the background fits Mustafina's routine so well
I'm surprised not to see Silivas, but thrilled to see Shoush and Dudnik.
Shawn Johnson and Simone are my favorites on beam. It's definitely a different style from many of the gymnasts in this video, all of whom are amazing by the way. I just loved how it legitimately looked like Shawn was on the floor. There were no wobbles. And Simone with her double double dismount and perfect form and big difficulty. She could probably do way more too if she wanted. Thank you for this list! It was fun to see some amazing beam routines that I had never seen before!
Thanks for sharing, this was GREAT! I had only ever seen Miller, Gutsu, Lysenko, and Bo out of all of those.
sanne wevers' 2016 routine was refreshing for sure
Thank you so much for putting this together! I'd love to see best UB, too. I think the series of leaps would be nice to get back.
I enjoy routines like Yang Bo and Nastia that are artistic, vs power like simone biles, and shawn.
These were all great routines, but I wouldn't agree with Komova's routine. Too many bobbles. Yang Bo's best beam routine was The China Cup. Absolutely perfect, including the landing.
pappysprite that’s true. But I think that the things she did right are really good, she’s smooth and her lines are beautiful
Does any want to WTF with me on London being 8 years ago? When that many years goes by and it feels like nothing you know you are leaving that precious youth behind lol
Nothing and nobody beats Shannon Millers beam. Ugh 😩 it’s STUNNING ❤
Dudnick had a calmness on beam that made me calm. Best difficulty. That routine would have a dv of 6.2 in the 2017/ 2020 c.o.p , which is a huge start value! She could compete with the best in the world and win. Those leaps would need to be fixed though.
wait shawn johnson and sui lu should be there
Just Sui lu
ncik delta No Shawn Johnson 2008 FOR SURE
I was waiting for sui lu's gold winning performance in 2011 worlds to show up!
Both!
I can't believe Sui Lu isn't in here. She was perfect on beam.
Where are the comments about groshkovas routine ?? Id love to see her moves done by the gymnasts of today
You really should have added Sanne Wevers' routine! It was so creative, original (she added her own skill) and elegant. The dismount alone was so unique. Sanne deserved her gold! Besides that, the routines you did include were great and I can see why they were added. Aliyah, Tatiana L., Tatianna G and Shannon are incredible.
Sanne is defo one of my favorite beam workers from the open scoring era.
Sanne Wevers' routine in Rio surely was something refreshing, and I'm happy she won gold. However, that routine was limited by the current scoring system. It did not exhibit so much imagination and creativity these older routines did. (Of course, that's not Sanne's fault.)
Oh Mitch Fenner! You are incredibly missed here in this world. Great commentator
autoneto Gymnastics' world really miss him!
Tatiana Lysenko: *“I love the beam because it obeys me”* - is there a more Soviet thing to say than that for a gymnast? 😂
12:11 Tatiana Groshkova is truly amazing!!
I love komova but that first routine had a major wobble and two questionable connections so I wouldn't count it to the top 10
That Komova's routine though. Absolutely dreamy
Yes, Komova always had the potential and talent to be one of the best beam workers of her era but her inconsistency has prevented this from happening (sadly).
I always feel so nervous watching her, waiting for her to choke.
Multiple balance checks (a couple of them huge). Not sure how it made this list.
Adriano you look pretty dreamy yourself 🤷🏻♂️
+@@LivingInElysium Why? Because apart from these checks she was plain amazing!
La 8 ème qui a fait un enroulé autour de la poutre ... tellement magnifique que tt mon corps à eu des frissons .... c'est incroyable ... super belle choregraphie 👏👏👏
Komova’s lines are too die for 😍😍😍
also...Yang Bo's best beam routine ever is at the China Cup...no flaws at all!
Shannon Miller deserves to be much further up on this list ❤
Yeaaaaaa! This has ALWAYS been the _ONLY_ ''sport'' that Blew My MIND! The _superflexible_ girls are magical to watch also!
Do you think balance beam was more artistic in past years?
I think so. I mean there has still been good work in recent years but the emphasis is definitely on the acrobatics at the expense of all else whereas previously you needed to have everything (dance, acro and choreo).
I also think the intense downgrading of balance and flexibility moves had a very negative effect on the overall artistic impression of most beam exercises. They lack variety of skills.
Lebronze Blackrose Thanks. That makes sense. It looked to me like yester years routines were more artistic and more of a dance.
Who is your fav on balance beam?
Lebronze Blackrose CoP? I noticed very quickly that older routines had more emphasis on pretty lines and hand balancing.
Yeah, there were marks for "virtuosity" and a lot of old cop's had a compulsory balance (that could be just a scale, or it could be a handstand press or even a planche of some sort).
My fave is definitely Dudnik, she just had everything (even though her leaps were meh). For gymnasts competing now, it depends on what you're looking for. Simone has the acro, Sanne has the dance tricks and someone like Eythora or Eremina has the choreo.
I think Komova is probably my fave modern day gymnast on beam. She blends everything well and her flexibility is to die for. The only thing really missing is a balance skill (and consistency, but that's another matter entirely).
Lebronze Blackrose Interesting! I like Dudnik, too.
Seems like some on beam nowadays almost crash on the beam. I wish theyd bring back balancing elements.
Very informative post, thanks.
I loved watching this!
Thanks for *not* including a "bonus sound track"!
I like all the handstands and creative mounts.
The lay-out of Laschenova is awesome
Aurelia Dobre Rotterdam 1987 and Daniella Silivas Seoul 1988 Team Free
The thing about that 2012 Komova beam is that apart from wobbles and maybe some pauses it is perfect. Like cannot take away on her acro positions, her leaps asnd amplitude. That is why it is here. Because in terms of perfection of individual elements bar wobbles.. who else has that? Even amazingly artistic gymnasts from the 80's would have bent kneese, chest down ect. Komova was textbook on most of her beam elements around this time.
It's too bad she could never put together a beam routine to her maximum potential at a major comp. it would have been amazing, like Liukin's 2008 pac rims but better.
love the foot tap at the end of the beam
Maureen Steele it’s fun doing it as silly as it may seem
I think it’s done sometimes so they can feel the end of the beam to have max length for dismount
They excluded Nadia’s perfect 10 and I stopped watching
"Gina Gogean 1997 (just kidding)" LOL
Mustafina's double spin at 5:55 is angelic.
I understand the IOC ban of moves under the beam but they sure are gorgeous when done right. 13:21
2:38 -
Gymnastics fans in 1996 - "I love _The Miller_ !! Woo hoo"
Same Gymnastics fans in 2021 - "There is *_no fucking 'Miller' on balance beam!_* " ::Throws chair::
Larisa Iordache? Catalina Ponor? Nadia Comaneci?
Olga korbut?
Nastia
Daniele Hipólito..
Those were best of their time, but things constantly develop. Dudik's routine (the last one) for instance was much more dufficult than the 1976 beam routine of Nadia Comaneci.
@QPHashSS77 She's not that good on vean, I lean she hace the difficulty but she lacks elegance and creativity
Fan Ye at 2003 world championships EF is the best routine of all time
i am ELATED that you added Shannon....which should ALWAYS be the case....but IMO, 1992 was way more difficult and just as good, if not better!!
The background music probably helped Mustafina a lot
Late 80's was my fave gymnastics era. Silivas, Shushunova, Laschenova, Dudnik, Boginskaya
89 worlds is the best.
And Strazheva, Yang Bo and Fan Di. It was anazing.
I didn't know you had videos of your own . Good video tho :)
Haha, they are terrible. So many formatting and editing errors, but at least the gymnastics is good. Thanks! :)
its so interesting to me how the older routines are more interesting to watch
Aliya Mustafina's routine was so beautiful. Thank you.
You forgot the beam exercise where Shannon and Dominque both did 4 flips in a row
Elles sont toutes remarquables ! Je remarque que beaucoup de soviétiques pratiquaient le flip avec une vrille sur la poutre, ce qui était une grosse difficulté pour l'époque, qui l'est toujours d'ailleurs !
Laschenova's routine was amazing.
平均台の演技は最高ですね!
so, so happy you have Shannon Miller's beam from 1996 where she took home the gold.... but i would've put her much higher than 9th...
I wouldn't have. Shannon is good but so are the others who are also world and/or Olympic champions on beam.
ok, that's understandable. but the only reason why i would is because she was the first U.S. gymnast to take the Olympic gold on beam, that's all
Fair enough, though I'm not American so I don't get hyped up about the first US gymnast to do stuff I guess? Shannon is wonderful though, I lover her original "Miller" move on beam. So amazing!
there was not one bobble in Shannon's complete beam routine. not one. has an original move named after her... she belongs in this list, but i agree, higher. there are great routines on this list, but i couldn't count routines at the "best" with balance checks, missed connections, etc. at that level, they should have worked out those problems in the gym before competition. gutsu is admittedly gorgeous to watch with tons of difficulty but again, checks. Shannon was solid!
Laschenova's bhs and layouts are premium. I don't know if I've ever seen them that crisp and confident.
Yeah it makes me sad that she wasn't more successful. Politics and Soviet collapse kind of screwed her over I guess.
Ampli Tood Kui Yuanyuan?
She is a treat to watch. Just stunning Soviet gymnastics at its finest.
Julianne Macnamara was the first to do the one arm handstand and was brilliant.
Surely you could have found a better version of Komova's routine
Good point
I personally like Ponor's 2012 OG TF routine and Sui Lu's routine at the 2012 Nationals.
Great selection! I would include Boguinskaya 1991 and Liukin 2008 but other than that I agree on all accounts.
Liukin I did consider but elected to take Shannon/Komova over her.
Boginskaya is one of my favourite gymnasts ever but I never enjoyed her on beam as much as I enjoyed her on the other 3 (especially her floor). Obviously it was still very good and I liked it a lot, just not as much as the ones in the video.
Agree with Luikin 2008😍 Loved that routine!
Thank you!! I love beam routines and those were excellent ☺️
Because of the Korbut flip at 8:14 and 9:29 and 14:22 is why men don't do the balance beam. Does it hurt women doing the Korbut flip?
Nastia Liukin’s 2008 beam routine was my favorite.
Shawn Johnson’s beam event finals 2008 Olympics should be included here!
Devona Gutierrez Definitely!
Komova's difficulty is incredible. And her score is higher than this year’s golden winner
I am in gymnastics and the beam is probably the hardest one because you need to get the perfect balance. But now I am in cheerleader not gymnastics anymore
