I can't agree more. It's has become focused to power and strength in order to squeeze a many flips and twists into a tumbling pass and has next to no individuality and personal creativity anymore. I'm not saying the skills that they do aren't gravity defying and awesome but there is more to gymnastics than that... or at least there used to be
One gymnast did a video where she tried training this mount, but was too scared to try it off of practice mats. I don’t blame her, but I think the mount might have been possible for her if she tried landing on the beam closer to her butt, rather than her lumbar.
My back was hurting even b4 I saw that. Now I'm not sure I'll ever get off the couch. i did some gymnastics when I was young, loved the uneven parallels, but when they started having me do things just on a 4" wide stripe painted on the floor, I looked at that raised, HARD beam, & I was like nope nope nope! I had very good balance, but also wayyy too good an imagination for how it'd feel to fall on that thing. I decided to stick with v-ball, track, cheerleading, & other sports.
I think a "balancing" skill (handstand, some kind of pose like an arabesque or a needle.) should be a CR. It is no longer balance beam as it's "tumble on the 4 inch wide piece of wood."
This was a requirement back in 2001 and most gymnasts did a basic scale to comply with the requirement. We didn’t see any amazing variety. Very few people did handstands.
This!!!!! It’s beautiful and should be done more often… most ppl don’t like it bc for some sicko reason they look at it as “inappropriate” with the open legs… like huh??
I saw an interview with Kristie Phillips where she discussed not making the Olympic team. She was so gracious about it saying how good it was for her to take a break from gymnastics and doing things like riding her bike to the beach with friends. All in all she seemed happy with her life
She was absolutely lovely! And she continued to show incredible flexibility well into her 20’s. I added some of her later stuff to my channel because it’s weirdly hard to find, and she’s so awesome. ❤
I remember Olga Korbut's backbend as she hugs the beam and watches her toes touch the beam before her, legs straight. The concentration on her face was just amazing.
Back in the day when all gymnasts at the Olympics had to do compulsory routines as well as their personal optional routines, you could actually see the artistry, flexibility and overall best gymnasts compete.
@@lesterine77actually I believe it is the other way around, seeing how today almost every gymnasts routines are basically the same. @@Berryations ??? I’m confused why you think anyone is “clutching their pearls”. My statement is that I think the split around the beam looks striking. @@YuckyMamaI think they meant that the reason it's not performed anymore is because of those people clutching their pearls who see it as "inappropriate" yet seemingly have no issues with female gymnasts having to wear an uncomfortable leotard and possibly having points deducted for accidentally showing their underwear when they could just have practical uniforms instead
I miss the variety and creativity of planche and handstand skills that were performed between the 1970s through to the 90s. There were so many photogenic skills back then.
@@YuckyMama How could I forget?! That *IS* the epitome of brilliant, photographic moments in gymnastics! I can’t wait until gymnasts begin doing wolf spin dismounts off the bars. Wolf spin vaults soon to come. 😆 Edit: I prefer to call them spins versus turns as most the gymnasts I see practicing them in person look absolutely lost as if they have no sense as to where they are, thus giving them a dizzy, spun appearance.
@@tracyjamieson362 They're incredibly graceful still, they're just more powerful and not barely eating to keep themselves as light as possible like they were decades ago.
And a triple wolf turn is worth an E... NERF THE WOLF TURNS. Honestly, we need to make a hold a requirement on beam. Add a new requirement for bars, beam, and floor, and add four (or eight) tenths back to vault start values. I miss great scores being in the 15's and phenomenal ones in the 16's.
I totally agree with everything you say regarding Wolf turns. We are all sick of them (I mean, if you’re going to give them a high value, then at least deduct for the crazy arms). I do disagree about the 15/16 values for scoring. Getting stuck on an absolute number led to the high-level stupidity of the 10.0 cap system. (I can get on a real rant about NCAA scoring). As a fan, I enjoy seeing women push the sport and any sort of plateau takes away the incentive to do so (the E cap on UB transitions means all innovation on those skills has come to a halt, same with the “dance elements” cap). So personally, I say let the women keep pushing the sport so that in 20 years, a score of 20 is just “good”.
A hold requirement will just make everyone do the simplest and fastest hold so they can continue with their routine and everyone will be doing the same thing again. That won't work. Kind of how everyone either does a simple spin for the requirement and move on or they do a wolf turn. Also I think woulf turns are properly valued at E. The actual problem is the E cap on dance skills which make it not worth doing other types of triple (or even double) spins. A double scorpion turn could easily be an F skill, same for a double ilusion but it's just not worth doing them because of the E cap.
Just make hold a counting element, and require wolf turns to have horizontal free leg throughout (and so disappear😎). Gymnasts are punished in D score for not doing a clean wolf turn now.
So very true. The scoring system needs readjusted. And what happened to the days where there were deductions for leotards that were too high cut in the back side?! I remember the year that I saw an entire team get a deduction for it. How about putting it back to making it about the gymnastics, and cover up the rear end!
So agree. Maybe they should divide it. Two kinds: acrobatic gymnastics, Simone Biles style and beautiful gymnastics, Nadia style. Plus rhythmic gymnastics as well of course

Not just wolf turns but as a dancer, I genuinely hate watching most turns on beam. It’s not the athletes but the limitation that is being on a beam - their eyes are always downcast because they need to know where they are going so they’re never going to spot properly in the first place. They’re literally just struggling to stay on that beam, hence the wild flailing on things like the wolf turn. Please trade them for hip circles or something else, even the skills like flairs, that are associated with MAG, look so much cleaner and more graceful than the turns that they’re gaming the system with
Yes!!! Every time I see those turns, I want to yell, "You have to spot to turn!!" But instead of spotting (bc they can't, bc they're on a beam), they just use momentum/strength to turn, and it looks awful! Flailing arms, wobbles, ugh!
Yeah I find it weird it said gymnasts don't do it because of back flexibility. I thought "since when do gymnasts have *less* flexibility than figure skaters?"
@@andrewkosmowski3985 I was thinking the same thing. I was like, “Hey, figure skaters do this all the time.” Ironically one of the first gyms I ever went to as a kid had a coach that also taught figure skating. He would have the skaters at the gym working on conditioning and flexibility quite often. I also got to witness their gorgeous spins and jumps.
I guess you don't need as much back flexibility in artistic gymnastics as it's more important to have leg flexibility for the big split leaps. You can see that turn a lot in rhythmic gymnastics though - we used to call it a fish pivot at my club but I think ring pivot is the more common name!
@@LiveFreeOrDie2A It actually does just the opposite. Higher values for moves than the actual landing which should be as important. Take 2-3 steps and still win is ridiculous.
Dominique Moceanu used to do a mount that started with her upside down, gripping the beam and sort of alternating stamping it with her back and front. That is my forever favourite.
I think it’s because the legs are not together, like one leg is always first. I think it would look better as a cartwheel (there’s a move similar where it’s one leg then the other),
The worley isn't pleasing to watch? It's so cool that's crazy. I can see how it would have to be on the back end of a combo rather than it being really linkable from the back end of the move itself

The Colussi & Teza 1 are both insanely interesting and the degree of control and fluidity needed to do them perfectly is mind bending. Also, the Double Front DMT reminds me of the years when you would literally hold your breath during dismounts. Never knew you might see back then. And there was this build up you could feel in the room, even on tv, right before it was executed. Just my humble opinion.
The Teza still blows my mind to see it. I do really miss originality and grace and beauty on the beam. Not a huge fan of todays beam or floor routines no beauty at all
I look back even as recently as the early 2000's and gymnastics used to be so much more interesting. Watching the last couple of Olympics much of the creativity seems to have been lost.
I used to love watching gymnastics, I was familiar with so many skills, and followed a few gymnasts careers over the years. Those days are over, the routines these days are so boring and all look the same. The grace of the sport is gone, and it’s all about tumbling and who can fly the highest. Thankful for videos like these so we can still enjoy the sport the way it was.

Exactly what I was thinking. A lot of these aren't done because you can do 'easier' skills for the same value, but what if you connected some of these unperformed skills together? It would certainly be more original and exciting than what they're doing today.
You’re right; gymnastics has changed. And I think this is something that’s important to remember-it is the sport, not the athletes. I’m glad this wasn’t more ragging on how “athletes today could never.” They absolutely could, what they’re doing is incredibly difficult as well; they’re just not incentivized to if they want to win, and it’s a competition. Ironically, watching lower level gymnastics can be a lot more fun often for this very reason.

There is no such thing as a Baitova, it is the "Talavera Flair", created by US gymnast Tracee Talavera in 1980 at the American Cup...at the 1981 World Championships she started her routine by leg circles, then later performed the flairs...Baitova only connected the two elements. The Talavera Flair is in the CoP and has been since 1981.
The Teza I & Zamolodchikova are my favs! They should definitely bring back the hip circles, those were awesome! The Li Spin is really cool too! @@yourstruly_777that is total bullshit! And if anything the fact that you took that as a racial comment says more about your racism then about the original commenter which said absolutely nothing about race, bc even when gymnastics was more creative and artistic like it used to be, there were more than just white gymnast, so maybe check your racism at the door.
I can't agree more. It's has become focused to power and strength in order to squeeze a many flips and twists into a tumbling pass and has next to no individuality and personal creativity anymore. I'm not saying the skills that they do aren't gravity defying and awesome but there is more to gymnastics than that... or at least there used to be
And difficulty that’s why it’s easy for one person to win so many gold medals. Some of these moves are INCREDIBLE and should be brought back.. PERIOD!
The Li mount breaks my back just while watching xD
I decided to stick with v-ball, track, cheerleading, & other sports.
this should be banned, it's way tooooo risky
I think a "balancing" skill (handstand, some kind of pose like an arabesque or a needle.) should be a CR. It is no longer balance beam as it's "tumble on the 4 inch wide piece of wood."
Same with a mounting skill of C or greater.
This was a requirement back in 2001 and most gymnasts did a basic scale to comply with the requirement. We didn’t see any amazing variety. Very few people did handstands.
The artistry is gone it’s so sad
CR won't change anyway. Make it a counting element will change. And cap the non-rebounding CV.
I agree with you. The Code of Points has destroyed any type of creativity on any element in gymnastics. Sad state of affairs.😢
Sorry to the creator, to say the LI LI spin isn't appealing? You're nuts. It's a beautiful piece of gymnastics
I think it’s horrible. Each to his own!
This!!!!! It’s beautiful and should be done more often… most ppl don’t like it bc for some sicko reason they look at it as “inappropriate” with the open legs… like huh??
It is so cool
I love it! 😍
It's beautiful
I can't even fathom how one comes up with a skill like the Li spin. It's just another level of creativity
@@levlava the way she described it. “It was bad for my gymnastics but it was good for my soul.”
@@missmoxie9188 💜💜💜
@@levlavaand she really is lovely
I remember Olga Korbut's backbend as she hugs the beam and watches her toes touch the beam before her, legs straight. The concentration on her face was just amazing.
Olga Korbut! One of my myth ❤
Back in the day when all gymnasts at the Olympics had to do compulsory routines as well as their personal optional routines, you could actually see the artistry, flexibility and overall best gymnasts compete.
Yeah. I think gymnasts today would really struggle with compulsories if it were still a thing.
@@lesterine77why?
@@lesterine77actually I believe it is the other way around, seeing how today almost every gymnasts routines are basically the same. They all do the same handful of tumbling skills, next to no dance(on floor) and no balance skills(on beam). There's no room for creativity and individuality in gymnastics today's
That Li spin is all well and good but the *split around the beam”??? OMG that is eye catching.
But laying on the beam while waving the hands around after a wolf turn looks better. For sure.
It’s fine my gosh why do ppl look at these skills and think to clutch their pearls
@@Berryations ??? I’m confused why you think anyone is “clutching their pearls”. My statement is that I think the split around the beam looks striking. In today’s day and age of copycat routines, it is very visually unique and unlike what everyone else is doing. Why do you think anyone is freaked out by this?
@@YuckyMamaI think they meant that the reason it's not performed anymore is because of those people clutching their pearls who see it as "inappropriate" yet seemingly have no issues with female gymnasts having to wear an uncomfortable leotard and possibly having points deducted for accidentally showing their underwear when they could just have practical uniforms instead
The preziosa was performed by a little gymnast in the Greek National Championships this year
Nice!
The Preziosa is nice
I miss the variety and creativity of planche and handstand skills that were performed between the 1970s through to the 90s. There were so many photogenic skills back then.
Are you implying the Wolf turn (that happens exactly 32 seconds into every single routine) isn’t the epitome of “variety & creativity”? 😂
@@YuckyMama
How could I forget?! That *IS* the epitome of brilliant, photographic moments in gymnastics! I can’t wait until gymnasts begin doing wolf spin dismounts off the bars. Wolf spin vaults soon to come. 😆
Edit: I prefer to call them spins versus turns as most the gymnasts I see practicing them in person look absolutely lost as if they have no sense as to where they are, thus giving them a dizzy, spun appearance.
And the gymnasts had grace that I don’t see anymore.
@@tracyjamieson362 They're incredibly graceful still, they're just more powerful and not barely eating to keep themselves as light as possible like they were decades ago.
@@LauraM-kr9wvnah. They're NOT graceful at all.😂😂😂
I've never seen the Li spin before that's so cool
The wolf turns are so so painful to watch.
And reduce connection bonuses.
They’ve really taken the artistry area from this artistic competition
So very true. The scoring system needs readjusted.
And what happened to the days where there were deductions for leotards that were too high cut in the back side?! I remember the year that I saw an entire team get a deduction for it. How about putting it back to making it about the gymnastics, and cover up the rear end!
So agree. Maybe they should divide it. Two kinds: acrobatic gymnastics, Simone Biles style and beautiful gymnastics, Nadia style. Plus rhythmic gymnastics as well of course
So, by your logic Simone Biles does ugly gymnastics?
@@tbh224 impressive, stunning, but not beautiful. The opposite of beautiful is not necessarily ugly. I feel she does acrobatic gymnastics, breathtaking but not graceful.
You don't need to get nasty. Nobody is calling her style ugly. It's not ugly.
@@sasa-ke2024I agree. Was just talking to a friend about this. Biles gymnastics is INCREDIBLE. But the word that comes to mind is not beauty, grace, but power, strength, acrobatic. I don’t mean she isn’t beautiful or graceful. Just her gymnastics style doesn’t bring those to the forefront visually.
The Li Spin and the Teza I are amazing. I find all of the skills in this video to be impressive and refreshing, and I would love to see them incorporate into modern routines
I really like your video presentation. I like seeing the skill repeated several times, and in slo mo.
SAME
This explains why I tried to watch some modern beam routines recently and just wasn't interested.
They've gotten rid of the best stuff!
Yeah they’re kinda boring
World Championships final last year actually had a ton of great routines with all kinds of different styles of gymnastics!
ua-cam.com/video/MDZqqVFJRQQ/v-deo.html
Same.
they’re extremely repetitive and so similar to one another
Doing flairs as a beam mount is so sick!!! A shame we don’t see those skills in WAG anymore
Agreeeed
Looks amazing
I like what the Jamaican gymnast, Danucia Francis did with the Colussi element and dismount.
The wolf turn is the stupidest looking skill ever.
The Preziosa reminds me of the Bielman spin in figure skating.
Yeah I find it weird it said gymnasts don't do it because of back flexibility. I thought "since when do gymnasts have *less* flexibility than figure skaters?"
@@overcomingobstaclescreates1695seriously!
@@andrewkosmowski3985
I was thinking the same thing. I was like, “Hey, figure skaters do this all the time.”
Ironically one of the first gyms I ever went to as a kid had a coach that also taught figure skating.
These moves are more surprising and pleasant to see than the skills now. Nobody stands out anymore.
nobody talking about the colussi??! what a beautiful skill
I hate how the scoring system incentivizes simply connecting two lower skilled less risky moves over performing one higher skilled more risky move.
@@LiveFreeOrDie2A It actually does just the opposite. Higher values for moves than the actual landing which should be as important. Take 2-3 steps and still win is ridiculous.
I miss all the creativity. All the routines look the same now.
The number of Wolf turns in Olympic competition alone was so boring and redundant. So many other beautiful options.
Totally agree!
I thought i remembered enjoying it more back in the day.
@@emusaurusi didn't know why until I saw the old stuff and liked it
The Phillips move is insane 🙌 All these moves need to make an appearance again.
Love to see all these skills back in modern Gymnastics ❤
This is so much more impressive and interesting to look at than today's power gymnasts.
They don't even look powerful to me now, just everyone keeps saying that as if we don't have video evidence
Dominique Moceanu used to do a mount that started with her upside down, gripping the beam and sort of alternating stamping it with her back and front. That is my forever favourite.
The Li spin looks nicer than the Wolf turn which with rare exceptions is almost consistently performed in an ugly way.
Right on! And it looks even worse on floor. To see every girl trying to get into a graceful position to do it, is just not pleasant at all
The Worley not being beautiful according to fans? Are these the same fans that think the wolf turns beautiful?
Wolf turns are the worst. So ugly. Can't wait for them to go out of style.
I think it’s because the legs are not together, like one leg is always first. I think it would look better as a cartwheel (there’s a move similar where it’s one leg then the other),
more people just think normal onodi is better
@@spocony.krasnolud Thank you that’s what it’s called. The onodi looks much better to me.
No one thinks wolf turns look good, it’s just the onodi looks better.
29:36. The Li Spin was executed beautifully by Tatiana Lysenko in the 90’s, one of the best beamworkers of her day.
The worley isn't pleasing to watch? It's so cool that's crazy. I can see how it would have to be on the back end of a combo rather than it being really linkable from the back end of the move itself
The channel owner was just saying that many gymnastics fans don't like the move which is somewhat true. Many prefer the onodi since it's viewed as being "prettier". I personally love both even though the onodi is one of my all time favs. Would love to see the worley back
The Colussi & Teza 1 are both insanely interesting and the degree of control and fluidity needed to do them perfectly is mind bending. Also, the Double Front DMT reminds me of the years when you would literally hold your breath during dismounts. Never knew you might see back then. And there was this build up you could feel in the room, even on tv, right before it was executed. Just my humble opinion.
The Teza 1 and the Li Spin were my favs!
The Li spin into beam wrap split ,wow, just so original
We need to bring back these routines way more exciting 🙌
The Tezai was like..
What the heck was that? My jaw's still on the floor; now THATS a skill an a half but looked really dangerous
The Teza still blows my mind to see it. I do really miss originality and grace and beauty on the beam. Not a huge fan of todays beam or floor routines no beauty at all
I give this guy props for how well he pronounces the names of the skills and the gymnasts’ names 👏🏻👏🏻
I find women’s beam extremely boring now, nothing like it used to be.
Yep, it's horrible
I've been on UA-cam watching past routines by Nadia and Olga. What happened? They all even seem to have problems keeping their balance anymore.
Balance beam used to look so pretty, and even more amazing with a lot of these moves. I miss watching this stuff.
Bring these back! Modern day gymnastics has serious lack of grace.
That last one is scary 😨 but beautiful 😍 to see.
The Brazilian gymnast Julia Soares always enters with a “Soares” and I think it’s very creative of her
Absolutely INCREDIBLE. I miss those types of skills.
I don't even think they fly high these days
Rhythmic gymnastics with hoops ,balls, ribbons, has a Lot of these movements.
its either low grade safety reasons etc. my favorite rare beam mount is either Candle mount/ Silivaș neck stand mount. favorite rare skill inside a beam routine is either a Korbut flip or the Miller which ends in a side straddle
I think these skills show way more strength and control over all the tricks done now!💪
Tricks?! Come on now. Those skills you see today are far more difficult to execute.
The Li spin is the best. Dance, artistry, flexibility, strength, balance. It had everything. Second favourite is the Zamolodchikova.
Forever my favorite on beam "The Miller"
So beautiful and graceful!
@@cowboycrushfan
Good one! And even she couldn’t hit that skill 100% of the time. It takes a lot of control to the turn and hold the split handstand. She did it perfectly during EF at the 1996 Olympics.
Beam has become so boring to watch with current scoring rules incentivizing every gymnast to do almost the same things. Beam routines used to be such an enjoyable work of art to watch. Scoring standards need to be changed to incentivize artistry and diversity in routines.
That Perozi move… it was used in Andonges floor routine !! ❤
I would love to see ppl bring these back
These gymnasts are so talented!!! Wish they still did routines like this.. now its a bunch of arm waving with a backflip here and there😂
And the rhythmic gymnastics is so beautiful
Very impressive!!! And yes, the Baitova and Homma are interesting to me to see on the beam by women since we usually see those moves by male gymnasts. In this video, a lot of the hip circles are my favorites. All very impressive.
These are awesome! It would be great to see some of the skills make a come back - jack it up a bit : )
Love both Li Li's skills
I really like the hip circles. It’s a shame that the point system has been funneling everyone in to doing the same things.
This was very interesting!! I think my favorite skill was the first one but they were all pretty awesome. I’d love to see more videos like this showing the floor, bars and vault.
"The Tousek" was also performed prior to 99 by Tatiana Groshkova. Beautifully.
Yeah with straight legs
Wow, I'm pretty sure I haven't seen some of these ever, I mean I didn't know they existed. I've been watching gymnastics fervently from about 1996 to 2012, maybe the 2016 Olympics too... After that I kind of lost track but want to watch this year's Olympics. All these skills are awesome!
my first olympics was 84 Mary Lou Retton omg she was incredible ! its what made me love the sport . Look her routined up and she was so positive with a beautiful smile .
Why are they treating the bean like the uneven bars though…maybe that’s why no one does them anymore!
@@denise8401234 I will! I already saw some videos of her here. The li spin would make a modern crowd go apes*it if they saw it. An athlete with longer lines in general would make this such a moment. It's very beautiful. Would completely make a competitor stand out.
I like the rare mounts and the turns. Particularly the scorpion and the Li Li. I also like the Yurchenko loop, the scales and the reverse planches. I also love Rolls: Garrison roll, back extension roll-full piroutte, front roll-press to hand stand.
How interesting. I'm 43 so I definitely remember some of these older moves but didn't clock they weren't being used anymore. Cool video.
I like the back spin and scorpion spin. The hip spins are cool too.
Would love to see the Baitova/Houma mount connected to a LiLi connected to a back roll to handstand.
Exactly what I was thinking. A lot of these aren't done because you can do 'easier' skills for the same value, but what if you connected some of these unperformed skills together? It would certainly be more original and exciting than what they're doing today.
I've been a circus artist... so thanks for this video ! I love originality :)
The li spin is just beautiful ❤️
You’re right; gymnastics has changed. And I think this is something that’s important to remember-it is the sport, not the athletes. I’m glad this wasn’t more ragging on how “athletes today could never.” They absolutely could, what they’re doing is incredibly difficult as well; they’re just not incentivized to if they want to win, and it’s a competition. Ironically, watching lower level gymnastics can be a lot more fun often for this very reason.
I was a gymnast and was always a athlete. M y body is hurting beyond my imagination. Lorraine Bregni your body is hurting too. We didit in the 60's.i loved flying through the air....
I ruined my body in the 1970s with the extreme back flexibility. I didn't know I was ruining it then, but now? My knees were the first to go, before I was 30 and my Dr tells me my spine looks like I had a long career in professional football (US). But I did love to flex and I did love to fly.
Who cares what the name is 😆. Biatova or not. Any female gymnast doing those circles on beam are amazing. Extremely difficult and rare
Great to see Peng and Danusia in this video 🩵💛
I'm french, so of course my favorite element is the Teza
I do miss the fancy beam mounts. But it makes a lot of sense when you explain why not to do it.

The Li spin is so beautiful! And the Teza I is just crazy!! How did she do that!?❤❤
I find the Worley extremely pleasing and impressive to watch! Would love to see that come back in style. Same with flares!
The Teza I & Zamolodchikova are my favs! They should definitely bring back the hip circles, those were awesome! The Li Spin is really cool too! I can remember watching gymnastics as a kid & I was always in awe of all the skills & moves those girls had but as this video states- I don’t really see much originality anymore. They’re still insanely skilled & I’m still very much in awe of them, I just don’t notice many wild signature moves, like these, anymore.
Also, the Li Mount is really cool but just looks painful! Lol
I always loved the Teza 1 and 2!
