Absolutely... incredible singer. Calling it a gift though is in danger of taking away from the incredible amount of time and effort in exploration, mimicry, practice. It's a craft and he's an absolute master craftsmen
We all can become singers if we love the art enough and put as much work, passion and care for ourselves and for our body as we do for our art and our creativity. Still, he is a master of the craft and has shown us so many ways to create music, not only with his voice but with the variety of musicians and styles he has combined and mashed up beautifuly. Lovage, Peeping Tom, Mr. Bungle, Faith No More, Mondo Cane, all nearly entirely different bands and all wonderful and creative in themselves.
that's so incredibly wrong. how can he possibly be underrated? he is one of the lucky ones that just have the attention they deserve. and that was possible because he is pretty good looking/sexy, and he's a "figure" (i don't know if it's correct (sorry am not english), in the sense that he attracts your attention/makes you curious of him for his "figure"), and last not last because he was/is part of a pretty mainstream rock band like FNM, that made him enough popular and gave him financial indipendency so he could actually choose to do the musician/artist as a "job". He is not overrated at all, he really values as a musician and really is a great vocalist&artist: but from this to say that he is underrated, - hell no. This man's done voices for movies and video games..
I truly cannot fathom how Anthony Keidis still to this day thinks Mike Patton stole his style. Anthony : You can't sing Jack. Squat. Compared to the endless appetite of King Patton.
Both Flipper the dolphin and an erupting pulsar could say that at the same time as Anthony and I would not be able to tell which of the 3 would be more full of crap. Mike is the epitome of the phrase "one of a kind" in the realm of all vocal talent...ever.
Haha nah it’s even better than that old Kaleidoscope accused Patto of stealing his DANCING style not his singing, and if you watch the videos of epic, falling to pieces I think you’ll see where he was coming from... which makes it even funnier, Mike Patton does have a history of trolling people like that
Djo Fortunato Right? I loved how Patton trolled the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Ugh. I still hate that band. When I was a kid, I would hear one of their songs on the radio and already be sick of it. Meh. Trash band. Just my opinion. 😊
Patton was a young kid who became Faith No More vocalist and blessed them for couple albums, he has since trancended to extrahuman dimensions. He occasionally gives concerts to humans.
He was already kicking ass in Mr Bungle long before FNM. They recently released the best thrash album of the last 40 years. A retake of their first demo LP.

Mike Patton is just a freak of nature... He is a genius who just makes singing those awesome range effortless. I think Rebecca just fell in love with Mike, as she heard his incredible talent. She is a Patton devotee now... just like million of his fans around the World ❤❤❤
Oh man yeah Mike is probably one of the most impressive vocal performers living, if not In history. Look up some of his voice acting work in video games like “The Darkness” and you’ll see how his skills go beyond the musical and really extend to just... whatever he wants to do.
I am so so SO UNBELIEVABLY PROUD AND THANKFUL THAT YOU LISTENED TO ME AND ALL THE OTHER PEOPLE WHO WATCH YOU!! Mike Patton is the most amazing and beautiful wonderful and exquisite vocal cornicopian and my favorite vocalist of all time!!!! I adore this man!!!! I’m glad you got to listen!
I encouraged a friend of mine, a jazz trumpeter, to give Patton a listen. He asked me what musical genre he sang. I said yes. I told him that Patton was an acquired taste. He never acquired it.
Your friend has the leave the religion of jazz. That said, there are some very very very straight and narrow people listening and playing jazz. It's like jazz gives you the world, and they say "nope, it's this 3m2 plot of land in the rainforest" and then calls that the world.
Oh my word, the lady Rebecca has done it again. My number one favourite singer getting the RVA treatment. The bit at 8 minutes literally had me in tears, especially as I knew what was coming! I thought I'd heard every noise you could make, then you drop a 'Oorrrgh'! On the subject of Mike Patton, I started listening to Faith No More in the late 80s, pretty much after the late Chuck Moseley left to be replaced by Patton, I was also listening to Mr Bungle, not even realising it was the same singer. The album The Real Thing had everything in regards to music and vocals, he was still pretty much a kid, experimenting with his voice, but he showed he had something special. The next Album, Angel Dust came out, more mature sounding, incredible. Saw them live in about 1992 in Birmingham (as a 17 year old on a crazy coach from Liverpool with a gang of school mates) touring Angel Dust, simply amazing, first time I'd heard the do 'Easy', as well as the little inserts like 'Pump Up The Jam' and 'The Right Stuff'. The stuff he's done since, in a crazy range of vocal ranges, and even languages, is unrivalled. Sorry about the long comment. :-) Thank you, again, Rebecca, you beautiful, beautiful creature! :-) x
He's a super, delightfully, hilariously, quick-on-his-toes conversationalist, too. From my *brief* chat experience. He was/is/will always be, super fun. I hope.
I am OBSESSED with this video and how much respect and obsession she has for him!!! I am obsessed and have been for over 20 years, but I know nothing about technical singing. I love that she knows.
Ive always thought that one of the main reasons Mike has such a large range in his voice is because he has always experimented with his voice and tried things that other people wouldn't because they think it's ridiculous or silly. When you break thru that box the human voice can do almost anything. When youve been making silly noises your entire life, you get quite good at it, and normal noises become simple in comparison.
Your mentioning Angel Dust somehow manages to remind me of Mr Bungle. Is it evil? Angel Dust remaining one of my top albums for a ruddy long time though. Somewhere along the way, my memories tide away back to late 1980' / early 1990's. I should say no more, shouldn't I?
I Was sold the album before, I remember still when I Went into the shop picking it up, listening to it There... to me it is still Amazing. And it is so much his Wayne of acting the songs the way he use his voice.
I'm so happy you have done more with Mike Patton, he is unbelievable behind the microphone! The range, the genres, to the sounds. One of the best ranges of any singers in the world! I hope you can do more reactions to more of his work in the future!
Mike Patton is much more than just a singer. He's also a great composer. I just read an interview with Trey Spruance of Mr. Bungle, and was surprised to learn how many of their songs Mike Patton had written every part for. It wasn't the songs you'd expect either. And at this point, he's also done 3-4 film scores, all radically different from each other. He never really plays instruments on stage, but he clearly has the ability to.
He told someone I know that he is a hack instrumentalist and doesn't like playing them but can sketch out a song. He also said that all he had to do with Bungle was describe a word or color or feel and they could make the sound he was thinking of
Why can't you just started a sentence, without having to sound like every other young millennial, by adding "low-key" to the beginning? Just say THE FUNNIEST PART WAS AT THE VERY END, PERIOD! Okay BRUH???
@@Danimal77 Do you understand that words have actual meaning to them? If I'd simply said, "the funniest part was at the end," it would not have conveyed *why* it was funny. By adding "low key" I was specifically pointing out how subtly funny it was in a "blink and you'll miss it way," the fact that Patton's seemingly cacophonous noises were in fact carefully composed and pre-written, as evidenced by the methodical page turn. Now, having said that, I'd like to apologize for writing such a long and complex explanation. Your complaint made it very clear that you prefer simple sentences with monosyllabic words, and that likely any nuance and detail beyond that confuses and frightens you. If I did indeed frighten you, then I'm truly sorry. Perhaps you would feel more comfortable with prose closer to your comprehension level. If you're open to suggestions, I can highly recommend the book by Richard Scarry, "Cars and Trucks and Things That Go." It's got lots of pictures, and it's one I have very fond memories of reading with my nephew when he was in pre-school. Give it a whirl!
My favorite vocalist the past 30+ years. The things this man’s voice does to me. He has such an extensive and varied catalog and I’ve listened to him nearly every day for more than half my life. So easy on the eyes, too. 😍
Simply one of the most amazing vocalists.. he can be smooth, rough, growling or whispering in the same song. Since 1989 I love his unique style. Legend.
Another Mike Patton enthusiast here. He just keeps expanding his interests and all evidence suggests he still loves what he does & is always curious about testing himself. When you see or hear vocalists burned out or phoning it in & you know they may have just settled into a comfort zone. #BeLikeMikeP
His vocal range is insane...and it matches how insanely wide the range of the types of music he sings is! His FNM and Mr. Bungle songs are SO SO great, and the Mondo Cane stuff is absolutely killer!
Can you imagine what would've happened if Frank Zappa and Mike Patton had a chance to work together? Enjoy your breakdowns, keep doing what you do \m/,
Rebecca, thank you for sharing this, for 2 reasons: 1--I LOVE Mike Patton so of course I'm always going to be grateful to see anything of his(even if it's stuff I've already seen before) and 2--For other people getting to see a snippet of how f*cking LEGIT awesome he truly is. I'm one of those people that get beyond stoked when I find someone who isn't familiar with him and immediately get to work right away making sure that they WILL. I don't know the man BUT I get extremely proud when others get blown away by what he can do. So when I see a video such as yours, I just KNOW more people are going to want even more of him. 😉👍🏻 Anyway, again, Thank You! Keep up the great work!
His voice knows no bounds - impressive as his vocals on Faith No More's albums are, it's when you see stuff like this that you realise he's actually quite singularly exceptional!
Mike Patton is such a theatrical soul yet, modest. Truly an Aquarian soul lol So Enigmatic. I love the metal stuff he has done the most but I just love the theatrical value of Mondo Cane
I've seen Patton called a lot of things, but this is the first time anyone's called him modest, lol. I'm not saying he's a dick, but he knows exactly how good a singer he is.
There is nothing Mike Patton cannot do with his voice. Everything he does, every band, every project turns to gold! Gas masks and megaphones are used as props. He even made the zombie sounds for “I am Legend”! He voice NEVER gets tired. He’s never had formal training, speaks fluent Italian, is a genius, is sexy, and quite frankly, he’s a bit bonkers. What’s not to love?
Funny story, neither my friend nor I are into fangirl crap. Anyway, her other half is the front man for a local metal band called Truth Corroded. She got to interview Mike Patton in the late 90s. She said she went weak at the knees and could hardly speak. I was gobsmacked. Well I got to see his magnetism when Mr Bungle toured in 2000. I also went week at the knees ans was positively hypnotised! And that was after a particularly shitty FNM concert at the entertainment centre in 1998/9 (when they were going through so many guitarists...the gig really was thar bad, they didn't care, going through the motions). But all was forgiven in 2000. Lol
The clip at 14:48 is from Mr. Bungle's song, "Ars Moriendi." During this particular period, they were touring with a bunch of edgy, manly man bands that cited them as an influence. So, Trevor Dunn had the idea to dress up as Goldilocks when they would play to try to piss off some of the crowd. Trevor Dunn is an amazing bassist (Billy Gould of FNM is also exceptionally good). Mr. Bungle is really into changing genres mid song, so all the other members of the band are as versatile as Mike on their respective instruments.
Dillinger Escape Plan w/ Mike Patton - When Good Dogs Do Bad Things. A legendary singer with what would become one of the most important punk bands of the last 20 years. It is completely unreal.
What's craziest to me is how Greg managed to take Patton's Style and work it into his own. I've never seen a torch passing like that between vocalists.
Just re saw this. He admitted he was using or drinking again and will take some time off. Faith No More and other band are disappointed but wish him well. He didn’t do well under COVID and admitted to agrophobia or a fear of people. He’s trying to get back into music but got really sick with fear and performing. I wish him well. He’s amazing and a gift to us
Mike Patton has agoraphobia?!? 😳 He pulls out his entire soul on stage when he performs. What a dichotomy! I hope he finds peace and sees his way through whatever his struggles are.
He is one of the funnest and most unique singers of all time. He does it all from hardcore to classic jazz and flamenco etc. The way hes unabashed about who he is helps to release his potential because hes not afraid. Patton is by far one of the most talented singer in rock hands down. I prefer Faith No More but all his bands and projects have great pieces. Hes well worth a deep dive. I used to sing but stoped a long time ago. I look up to him as a singer.
@@Charlotte-Willow King for a Day is my favorite. His voice is so smooth on the softer songs yet blisters into absolute crazy punk, hardcore, metal crescendos that make me laugh and yet give me goosebumps such as Cuckoo for Caca. #2 would be The Real Thing. His high end falseto vibrato is just amazing. Any other singer and one could call it "whiny" but Mike is just freaking perfect at it. He also uses this rythmatic funk syllable style to contrast that upper range perfectly! The last album was a great comeback an of course Angel Dust is amazing. However Those are my top 2 of them all in order.

“There’s a lot to get through” says Rebecca, and yet... I never wanted this to end. Mike’s physicality is as much the instrument as his voice. Rebecca, would you consider a future compilation analysis of Mike’s California album with band Mr Bungle? I believe the majority of the world’s most recognized vocal and musical styles are included throughout the albums 10 tracks. One minute of RVA analysis per track and I’ll never stop watching (million views click over) 😂
If you want to see what a human voice is capable of, listen to “Adult Themes for Voice”. It’s him and a microphone. You won’t enjoy it at all, but it will break your brain trying to figure out how he’s doing it.
That album arrived in the post after I'd got back from a coach journey, fairly sure I'd just seen the pumpkins, anyway, it was around 3am...I insisted to my girlfriend at the time that we listen to it all before bed...
What i love about Mike is that if you look back through his entire body of work its clear to see that he has always been striving to evolve musically. He doesn't stick to one style. I read that he has the widest vocal range of any known singer in popular music.
Awesome evaluation. You really know your stuff! Live your vids. Mike is a phenomenal vocalist! I think he's one of the most overlooked vocalists in music. People know how good he is, but so much of the public doesn't. He's truly amazing, love the dude!

Improv too, he literally just jumped in a vocal booth and did all the vocal work in like two or three run threw off the movie. He also did many of the zombie voices for Left for Dead 1 & 2.

Mike Patton is one of the most underrated vocalists of our time.
no, he is not. he is a god for those who know him, and all the others who don´t care are not worth listening to his music. ;)
that's so incredibly wrong. how can he possibly be underrated? he is one of the lucky ones that just have the attention they deserve. and that was possible because he is pretty good looking/sexy, and he's a "figure" (i don't know if it's correct (sorry am not english), in the sense that he attracts your attention/makes you curious of him for his "figure"), and last not last because he was/is part of a pretty mainstream rock band like FNM, that made him enough popular and gave him financial indipendency so he could actually choose to do the musician/artist as a "job". He is not overrated at all, he really values as a musician and really is a great vocalist&artist: but from this to say that he is underrated, - hell no. This man's done voices for movies and video games..

Oh man yeah Mike is probably one of the most impressive vocal performers living, if not In history.
Look up some of his voice acting work in video games like “The Darkness” and you’ll see how his skills go beyond the musical and really extend to just... whatever he wants to do.

Thank you, again, Rebecca, you beautiful, beautiful creature! :-) x

"í really do like this man"......we all do, with our entire being, we all do
Ive always thought that one of the main reasons Mike has such a large range in his voice is because he has always experimented with his voice and tried things that other people wouldn't because they think it's ridiculous or silly. When you break thru that box the human voice can do almost anything. When youve been making silly noises your entire life, you get quite good at it, and normal noises become simple in comparison.
Angel Dust is so amazing, Mike is the only vocalist on the entire album.
He also said that all he had to do with Bungle was describe a word or color or feel and they could make the sound he was thinking of
Low-key funny part was at the very end. In the midst of making all the crazy noises, he quietly turns the music sheet to the next page.
Yes! "Awwww she missed it!" :D
