Tomahawk - God Hates A Coward (live)

- Опубліковано 11 січ 2025
- Tomahawk are a four piece rock and roll supergroup. The band is composed of:
Mike Patton - vocals (Faith No More, Fantomas, Mr Bungle)
John Stainer - drums (Helmet)
Duane Dennison - guitars and Mike Nesmith-like leadership
(Jesus Lizard, Hank Williams III)
Kevin Rutmanis - bass (Melvins, The Cows)
Tomahawk was founded by Denison and Patton in early 2000. After 10 years of touring and recording with The Jesus Lizard, Denison was living in Nashville, Tennessee where his skill and versatility had landed him a job as lead guitarist with Hank Williams III. After witnessing a Mr Bungle show in Nashville, Denison was introduced to Patton, whose list of lead vocal jobs includes bands from Mr Bungle to the late Faith No More and an estimated kabillion others inbetween. The two professed an interest in each other's work and soon tapes were being exchanged in the mail.....
The dynamic duo soon realized that in order to achieve their rock vision, others were needed. Denison enlisted John Stanier, an old friend whose swing and power on the drums he'd long admired. Stanier, aka DJ Big Bad John, quickly accepted the offer and soon tapes were exchanged in the mail...
Not to be outdone, Patton enlisted bassist (and former halfway house employee) Kevin Rutmanis (Melvins) whose low frequency rumblings had power across vast stretches of space and time. With the lineup now complete, Tomahawk was born to rape the day.
This is maybe the best live recording of a song ever.
yes
This and Flashback
Oh 100 percent I prefer this version over the album version all day even though it’s just as good
this is one of the best recordings ever (no exclusions)
Fucking incredible
I sing this at work when I'm painting with my respirator lol
Lmaooo i love that 😂
Samesies lol
Although I'm a spray foamer and no longer a painter
hell yeah lmfao i love your profile pic
LOL
Im going deep into the Mike Patton rabbit hole 😂 this guy is nuts and I love him
Welcome to the hole, grab a sandwich and enjoy the stay.
Joining you!!
It's a deep motherfuckin hole let me tell ya!
Same, it’s insane & no one gets me lol 😭
@@barbarab2770 we get you, don't worrie, we're not alone! ua-cam.com/video/A5twjj9mbo0/v-deo.html
I honestly can't believe this is a live recording, it's unreal.
DADDY FRANKIEEEEEE
I dont think it is, you can clearly hear a shift about 10 seconds in.
@@CriticalSurvival0 That drum intro part is a sample played on Mike’s keyboard which is how they start off this song. It normally sounds like that. There’s some other pretty cool Tomahawk concerts on youtube where it happens, though the audio quality isnt as good as this video so the shift doesnt sound so unnaturally good
@@CriticalSurvival0 That's the switch from the studio microphones with the audience to the soundboard signal.
Indeed!!!
Fun fact...saw them open for Tool in 2002 and they antagonized the crowd the entire time, got booed the whole set, and finished with f**k you Pensacola! Goodnight
Respect lol maybe the crowd needs to learn about good music
That's crazy! I saw them open for Tool in 2002 as well, but it was in Tucson. Matter of fact, I just sent this video to my high school sweetheart, who was with me at that show. I've had a 20+ year crush on Mike Patton since then!
Same but in Little Rock, Arkansas! I loved it. I was a huge Mike Patton AND Tool fan. Greatest. Concert. Ever.
No offense to tool but they're kinda posers when compared to this motherfucker
I must have saw them on the same tour. Tomahawk opened for Tool in Tucson Arizona. Last song they played, Mike asked the crowd Hey, you guys like pigs head?! Then he proceeded to through a pigs head into the crowd. Craziest thing I’ve seen at a live show. lol
Sending a reminder to everyone that this is the best live version of a rock song ever
i feel blessed to have found it however i give cred to the bad a$$ fan who suggested to come watch in on youtube... i sent this to my brother also i was blown away by its awesomeness
I watch it at least 4-5 times a year since it has been uploaded.
Heard of Alice in Chains?
Thanks.
@@gamzillio lol a year passed and this got 0 likes or replies. I just wanted to let you know.
Mike Patton is absolutely criminally underrated... A brutal vocal proficiency and diverse singing techniques, a true artist.
as much as i am sick of the word 'underrated' being used about every single effing band and vocalist and guitarist in the world, in this case, maybe he is because there is no rating system that goes high enough. But ffs, stop using the word, please.
I don't think so. He's pretty accurately rated when it comes to industry respected opinions.
Not necessarily underrated.. I'd say it's more like you either KNOW he's off the charts talented or you don't know who he is/ don't recognize talent. (Not you obviously, I mean people in general)
Yes
Not as much underrated as underappreciated. More people should be exposed to his work
I've been listening to nothing but Tomahawk and Mr Bungle recently ..so much Mike Patton stuff I'm only just discovering 🤯
Anything he’s involved with just smashes boundaries
yeah...
my channel/videos smash boundaries... but I don't see you there.
This is WAAAY better than the studio version.
Do an understanding Mike Patton! I really liked the Mr. Bungle video which is how I ended up on this video and I’m obsessed with this performance and his vocals
if only there wasn't the mic issue at 1:00 :(
@@MrSnuffian listen to Peeping Tom patton's vocal range on that album is amazing...also Fantomas millennium monsterwork if u wanna hear some melvins with mike patton...
shane millman will do! Also era Vulgaris is an amazing album. I got to see them perform The Fun Machine took a shit and died live
This is the only version I've heard, or will hear, cuz nothing will hold up to this.
There’s two kinds of people in the world: those who love Patton and those who wish they could love Patton.
I love Mike Patton...!! True fact. From the moment we met at age 15 him um 23..but he thought I was older and we just went driving around in the minivan..the whole band. It was love at first sight hehe..then again in 93..and 97..fucking gorgeous man.😍...still has my heart forever..all the awkwardness and crazy Aquarius nature..oh and those looks into my eyes. Oh kill me already!! 😂💕
Anthony Kiedis wishes he could love Patton.
@@joem7572 lol
@@DuspHasInfluenza but did you fuk
I'm drawn in by how Patton's vocal intensity just steadily grows throughout the entire song. It feels like he's at a 10, and then he just keeps cranking it up even further. And it just keeps going up right until the end.
this one goes to 11
The drugs are just starting to kick at the intro. By the end of the song he's flying high again.
If you're referring to the gig at Manchester Academy in 2002 with Dalek supporting (in the same building as a Vex Redd gig), the I was there too. Fantastic gig. Met him afterwards (again). I took some pretty good photos at that gig (proper photos on a film camera - not a digital one) and had one made in to a large poster for my wall it was that good. Saw Bungle at Leeds Irish Centre on Volante tour, and the folling night in London. The Leeds gig was so weird. Fucking club turn working men's club in the middle of a housing estate on the Leeds ring road.
watch that video on YT called mike patton vocal change it has all the notes he hits and clips of songs showing his insane range
That's what you can with 6 octaves. I think I have 3 😂
Anything Mike Patton touches turns to fucking gold, man.
mike is a god
I come back to old Mike Patton videos when I feel like shit and immediately feel better 🖤
I sing this every night before bed with my apnea mask on lol
wayne mullarkey. Hahaha. Dude that's awesome
wayne mullarkey best fuck ever
wayne mullarkey best fucking comment ever. Lol autocorrect my mind
That's the best comment I've seen in a few weeks. Cheers.
That comment made my day lmao
Patton is the most unique vocalist I have ever seen. And quite possibly my favorite
same...he blows my mind honestly
Mike Patton's range is insane!!!!
Literally the best in the world. Hits all six octaves.
NicCole Weinberg not the best in the world but one of top 3 in music industry and the best because using growling, guttural and clean voice it can do only some people and their vocal range hasn't 6 octaves)
@@sandansaiyan5675 s.h.u.t. t.h.e. f.u.c.k. u.p...
@Itamar Lopez Jeff Buckley was one of the best. Matt Bellamy is influenced by him.
You also have to factor in the enginuity of putting a mic in a gas mask for a pretty kickass effect.
Everyone: 'WHY CAN'T YOU BE JUST NORMAL?'
Mike Patton:
Exactly hey
Incompatible culture. Needs to be more regular.
He’d never be that bland
And just what is normal anyway.
@@dbrutiger8232 this music is like the most normal thing in this world haha
I'm 11 and I love this song and all his other bands! My Dad got me into Tomahawk when I was in preschool and now I'm hooked to Tomahawk and all of his other bands. Mike is the man!
Smart kid.
Rock on little man! 🤘
😊
Don’t know how Tomahawk ever got past my radar 20 yrs ago.
This song is addictive
There needs to be a version of this that's four days long.
THAT would be the equivolent of a real-life music *_bender_*
Mike Patton has to be one of my most favorite frontmen alive. THIS is why.
This is the definition of a supergroup, Patton, stanier, rutmanis and Denison. It’s like everything good about 90s rock rolled into one beautiful package. Tomahawks debut album will always be number one for me
Kinda reminds me of korn and seether In a way

@@Crusade6539 lmfao what? are you mentally challenged
It was great. Got to see them at a small club in NYC on their first tour. It was hectic as usual
What a great, underrated bass player Kevin Rutmanis is. He was Melvin's best bass player. Hope he's clean now.
The bass line really carries the song. Groovy, tasty, dark, psycho.
I think Jeff Pinkus is better
YUS
Joe Preston for me
I hope he's doing ok, he is awesome, master of the slide bass.
Melvins have had some of the most underrated and talented players in game. Even Lori Black, who was the least talented, was killer on her albums with them. Buzz and Dale are the moneyball recruiters for the bass slot. Never a bad choice.
Mike Patton is a god amongst men. So thankful to have lived in his age.
Huge props to the sound engineer that mixed this live. Simply incredible.
Where in the Hell have I been? Just discovered this masterpiece. Wow
I prescribe immediate attention to Ipecac Records, Mike Patton's record label. Get your Tomahawk, Mondo Cane, Peeping Tom and all the music Magic Mike supports.
Yup me today 2020
Better late than never son.
Look up the song (Flashback live) and it's from this same show.
You must have been in the sewer along with my pedigree.
I skipped over Tomohawk back in the day. Now, I can’t stop listening to this song.
Mike Patton is a great example to describe the difference between a vocalist and a singer
Wow, the Village People sure changed paths.
This is my first rock song I ever heard
this is a true hidden gem. It keeps getting removed. that aside Patton is a fucking legend and Angel Dust is a masterpiece. anyone who found this by accident or stumbled across it needs to go listen to FNM now! big thanks to the uploader!
FNM AND Mr. Bungle really
@@tiffanylittle5777 Not a huge Mr Bungle fan but FNM absolutely.
Angel Dust and the album this song is from are two of my favorite albums of all time. Absolutely stunning musicianship.
Fnm plus peeping tom, lovage, his opera stuff, monde carne, etc.
Bungles only cool because it's so different everytime their only good ones raging wrath though lol
It’s not just about the song…it’s the intent. It’s over too soon, but that’s part of the joy. You can always listen to it again……and again. 👺
Mike Patton is a very under-rated rock god.
I love everything about this performance. The intensity of everyone, mutiple mics, MIKE PATTON and his creepy beauty, the fact that they're all dressed like cops in ties, his action pose at the end. And the song
That mic switch dude
I find him so sexy, and I'm a straight male, lol. He is friggin gorgeous in talent and appearance.
@@yorkethehumble That’s the kind of sex appeal he has. I really can’t think of anyone, male, female or otherwise, who I’d rather have sex with.
The absolute definitive version of this song.
Hell, the definitive example of how to perform live as a band, mixing showmanship, passion, musicality and pure creativity.
Patton looks possessed. In the best possible way. That’s how music should feel.
Possibly one of the greatest live performances of a song ever. This surpasses the studio version by miles.
Yes but also.. ua-cam.com/video/Frud5RFtTi0/v-deo.html
This is one of those songs that doesn't matter if it has a meaning or not. It's raw, it's viseral, and it was pulled of perfectly in this live recording. I always find myself coming back to this song now and then
It makes perfect sense in the context that the devil is speaking.
For you kids out there.
This is a God.
An immortal....
Mike Patton
Mike Patton is one of those artists who can simply do no wrong. His talent & range, especially live, blow me away.
for days and days i've listened to everything mike patton even interviews.. i have not been bored or disappointed once... he has super human talent
Switching from Mondo Cane to Tomahawk = Mindblown. Mike is truly one of the most versatile singer ever
❤
that mic switch on 2:18 is the smoothest thing ive ever seen
i scrolled down just to see if anyone already mentioned that haha so sick
Yes it is
My favorite part of the song because of the mic transition!
sve That's what she said!
Patton makes it look, Easy. Doesn't he.
what i noticed is even with the mask on he has amazing control over his voice if u listen closely...he is actually screaming at the top of his lungs...
Best performer, ever!
Cmon man this shit is the pillar of excellence.
I have a folder called "Best UA-cam of all time" and this is in it.
I want every section of this song to be twice as long, which is probably why I listen to it so much. Can't believe it's under 3 minutes long. Perfection.
Some information about this video... It's from a live performance that was filmed in early 2002 for channel [V] at their then headquarters located at Fox Studios Australia in Sydney. The band performed a number of songs from their "Tomahawk" album.
The band was in Australia touring and performing at "the big day out" festival.
I'm genuinely straight up falling in love
This shit NEVER gets old..❤️❤️
it doesn't...ever since a fan suggested it i have watched it 30 times so far
I'll sow my seeds with a metric grosse
No footsteps go beyond it
I'll eat the dirt
Where the rooster crows
Fresh rodeos, behold it
Check your pulse in your teardrops
Make you a cyclops
Breakin' the branches off your family tree
Keep you up like a fluffer girl
Ain't that enough, sir?
Look in the sewer for my pedigree
Your truly cause repeats its pulse
And makes your tears, if you need it to
Make me blow out my brain or I'll point it at you
While I'm thinking of you
But I'm hangin' tough!
[Chorus]
Day, by, day, by, day, by, day, by
Day, by, day, by, day, by, day, by
[Bridge]
Listen closer to your mother
You can hear an ocean roar
Sittin' quiet in the corner
Put another record on
God hates a coward, sonny
Got a date with your VCR
Watch another action movie
Dream of me
Verse 2]
On the only piano
Wrote the fuckin' concerto
Shoot pool with your eyeballs, rack 'em up
Make a meal of your asshole
Gnaw on your fat soul
Dipping your heart in my vinegar
Like a million disappeared
Just how long did you think they would live
Prepare yourself, coming to defend
And if you ever want to be (?)
Coming to kill, I'll never finish my plate
Or I'll burn it up
[Chorus]
❤hell yeah dude
Fresh rodeos sounds like “rice-a-roni” in the live version 😂
Is this for real? Thanks. Many have fallen before us attempting this same post. ;)
Holy shit. I remember watching this live back in the day. For years it's slipped my mind I always thought it was Mr bungle. Could vaguely remember the song. Now I can finally rest. Hahahaha
It's kind of hard to go back to the studio version after hearing this version. It's brilliant!!
The guy who engineered and mixed this deserves some kind of medal. Been watching this video for years and nothing has beat it yet.
Love you dad, one of his favourite songs. Thanks Tomahawk
I watch this every few months. I think I should be able to like it each time.
Best ever. Mike is ruthlessly human. Human excellence in the form of expression. Dude Is hella under rated . Which proves how lame existence has gotten
yes it pisses me off that other bands who actually suck are far more famous... its sad
Underrated? He's considered the greatest of all time.
Not underrated. Unique. Mainstream is common, like a McDonald’s hamburger. That’s not what he is, he is a gem you have to find.
Killer version. Patton is a genius.
I came home and my girlfriend said she saw this on my playlist and watched it and she’s obsessed with this song now and why didn’t I show it to her before. I decided right then I need to marry this girl.
She is Patton in disguise.
This is probably my favorite Tomahawk live, Mike Patton is so eccentric and strange. I love it.
Mike is a funny guy. Once saw a gig in Vienna and at the beginning of the show he said: "WTF are you doing here guys ! Metallica is playing right now in another venue ! ". Fatastic gig though.
said the same thing about Van Halen in Toronto back in 2015....then FNM proceeded to work Jump into the breakdown for Midlife Crisis....
@@harryfromwork And when I saw them touring for Sol Invictus in Detroit with Hall & Oates. They worked Rich Girl into Midlife Crisis.
@@bryanmaxwell8738 It's their thing...and I love it.
If I were in Metallica, I would still have gone to the Tomahawk gig!
Reminds me of the time I saw Morbid Angel in Boston and Dave Vincent kept asking us why we weren't checking out WEEZER up the street.
Gotta be one of the greatest live performances ever. All the band were in the pocket, and all their energy was synergetic.
Mike Patton is a chump
Patton is brillant at the FX and keyboard sounds in his projects. His background lines on the chorus makes it sound like a studio recording...It makes people think this is overdubbed...I've seen Patton live across 4 of his groups. He is one of the most versatile and interesting vocalist in several genres...The band are all stars from impressive bands. This is there best song. ..
Everyday, I listen to this fist thing in the morning to wake up for work. Really puts me in my best mood.
This song, it grabs you and when it's over it sends you looking for more. What an absolute great live performance by the band.
His high pitch screams are amazing.
it gives me chills every time...lucky a$$ crowd lol
Amazing performance killing it all.
I love mike patton so much
This is my absolute favorite video on the internet. Gone back to it so many times over the years, showed my friends and fam. I always end up comin back to it. So freakin good
The first tomahawk album was ridiculously great and original. Patton plus Jesus lizard is brilliant.
I saw them open for tool (wow, over 20 years ago already) and I have to admit I did not understand the greatness I was witnessing. I forgot about them pretty much all together until this popped up on here. Very happy to be reunited. That was a great performance
Same. Many nearby Tool fans were also bewildered but knowing it was Mike & friends was enough for me then.
I really love the way he puts on a performance and always puts 110% into whatever he does. It's always so diverse and never boring.
I can see why this isn’t a mainstream homerun lol, but my god that is music and sounds on another level
