You've opened a Pandora's Box of FNM/Patton fanboyism. We are legion, Doug. You listen, we'll watch. The more FNM you hear, the higher quality human you will necessarily become. Bravo, sir.

Faith No More is the reason I picked up a guitar. Jim Martin was a god to me. I would like to suggest Small Victories, also on Angel Dust, or the title track The Real Thing from from the previous album.
One of my all time favorite bands and this is from one of my all time favorite albums. Patton and the boys are incredibly diverse. From this album some masterpiece's you may want to react to are 'Everything's Ruined', 'A Small Victory', and 'Kindergarten'. The whole album is a masterpiece, but those are top-notch. It took me a while, but I think angel dust might be my favorite rock record of all time. Coming at the album within the last 5 years, you can truly see how many bands these guys/Mike Patton has influenced. It's cliche but they were totally one of those "ahead of their time" bands that were doing their own thing at a time where grunge, alternative and metal ruled rock, they did a combo of all 3 that proved to be timeless. That album has vibes from jazzy blues to heavy metal, and Mike is singing so perfectly. Doug!!! If you love midlife crisis you have to listen to king for a day, from the album king for a day. The song is a beautiful mix of melody and harmony, you'll see once you listen to it. One musician to another!
Someone suggested two weeks ago to listen to Mike Patton with the band "Mr. Bungle". My vote is for the entire "California" album. Quite an interesting album. Some critics call it the best album of 1999. Even recreates the "Ramayana Monkey Chant".
I wanted to recommend Moody Blues "Days of Future Passed" which is a phenomenal album that you have to listen to in its entirety if you haven't. The album is recorded with an orchestra. I really think you will love this album because of the orchestral aspect of it. It's considered Progressive Rock, and Symphonic Rock. The song covers the day from sunrise to night. You will love the poetry at the beginning and end of the album. It would have to be one of those extended videos that you do.

You should listen and react to their song Ashes to Ashes if you want to see just how much control he has in his voice. Patton is insane in his vocal skills.
A lot of the (musical) key ambiguity was thanks to Roddy - he knew what he was doing. By that album they had knew that having a dissonant verse and a driving chorus was a good formula.
The stacked vocals at the end are the chorus (You're perfect yes it's true...) over top of a restatement of the first line (Go on and wring my neck...) This song always impressed me as being a darker, more sophisticated version of "Epic", and it really set the tone as a lead single for the record. It's track 2 on the disc, and track 1 (Land of Sunshine) is more upbeat, but sardonic as all hell. It'd be fun as heck to see you do this album in Extended Play Lounge - it's a wild ride.

Hi Doug! I have caught up! Great! Looking forward to this one. I’m thinking of making a playlist of the songs that have appealed to me. Might be a rather a long one!
The first time I heard this was live on stage, Wembley Stadium, between Soundgarden and Guns & Roses. I was already familiar with The Real Thing, but this was totally different from what I was expecting.
Mike Patton has one of the biggest vocal ranges in music, bar opera right now. I like that he doesn't feel the need to show it off with every tune. His voice is at the service of the song.
Now you have to go down the Patton rabbit hole and check out all of his other bands. Mr. Bungle, Tomahawk, Fantomas, Dead Cross, Peeping Tom, Lovage, and MondoCane for some Italian pop. Guy is all over the place.
I should also note that this was after Mike Patton had spent time around John Zorn and was doing a lot of emulative voice work, exemplified in this song... If you listen to his vocal tones on this, the verses sound like percussion, the pre chorus and chorus sounds like horns, breakdown sounds like guitars, etcetera
I love Faith more so much I'm a super fan. Midlife crisis is amazing and of course so many more songs and albums. And just letting you all know that I had to pick one band FNM
Mike Patton is more of a vocalist than a singer. He has many covers to his voice. You just have to look at his career as a whole rather than a single song to catch them all. An insane range starting from stupidly low fry growls to legit banshee screams around the 6th or 7th octave.
There are many really engaging projects Mike Patton was/is involved in. As a movie buff, one of my favs is Fantomas’ album Directors Cut. The Godfather theme (as sung by Patton) is nuts and the whole album is a trip to listen to.
This disc was spinning a lot for me '92 to '93, and fueled many late night study sessions during university. Midlife Crisis is probably the most straight-up rock song on the album, but there are a lot of other gems there. Looking at the track list right now, Kindergarten and A Small Victory immediately stand out for me, but I'm sure other people would suggest others.

That studio LP has been one of my favorite albums of all time for many years. I would consider ‘Angel Dust’ to be their darkest record, which is honestly part of its appeal to me. FNM has always been categorized as a rock band that also brings in some funk. Plus they have kept keyboards in their mix. Meanwhile Mike Patton is considered to have an otherworldly vocal range as well as dynamic expression. They definitely bring way more to the table than your typical guitar-based band.
Also, if you go back to the very beginning, part of the opening drum track is sampled from Cecilia by Simon and Garfunkel. It’s more apparent in live versions, oddly enough.
I think I read FNM said that 'The Real Thing' album was really their label pushing what it wanted. With the success of 'The Real Thing' (still an awesome album) it gave FNM the freedom to make an album that they wanted to make and it was a middle finger to the label and some so called 'fans' that wanted another 'Epic'. Mike Patton's voice completely changed and I even remember being shocked that he'd cut his long hair when I first saw the video for 'Everything's Ruined' another great song from this album that was so ahead of it's time people didn't know what to make of it.

FNM has always been categorized as a rock band that also brings in some funk. Plus they have kept keyboards in their mix. Meanwhile Mike Patton is considered to have an otherworldly vocal range as well as dynamic expression. They definitely bring way more to the table than your typical guitar-based band.
Angel Dust is a masterpiece. Midlife Crisis was the right choice for reentry.
Such a brilliant band
A great faith no more tune. "Madonna", its alternative title. "Without me your only you"
Council of Doug... hahaha... that's great! :)
Wow, it's been too long since I heard this band. I was in my final year of university in 1992 and had music on all of the time.
Great analysis! I'd like to see you react to The Glow Pt. 2, Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven or at the very least Ok Computer.
Angel Dust is a legit masterpiece.
First FNM release after I got into Mr. Bungle, which would be great for a Weird Wednesday. Thanks again, Doug!
it's ironic that now madonna is going through some sort of old age crisis 🤣🤣but thx for the video, one of my top 5 bands for sure
" menstruating .." was bleeped on local radio, can you believe it? Angel Dust is one of my all time favorites. As for Mr.Bungle, California is a must to react to-Holy Filament, Ars Moriendi (sic), etc.
Is that a Deep Purple - Made in Japan Record in the background?, one of the greatest live Rock albums :) hope we get an epic episode or two listening to that album!!!
Those lyrics are brilliant
The two competing lines of dialogue is almost like the competing of youth and aging - Midlife crisis.
