  • The rise and fall of Disney Channel is one of the most fascinating times of popculture history. From the 90s to 2019, Disney had a near monopoly over ever corner of the entertainment industy. From music, to TV, to movies, they were churning out stars in what one could only describe as a popstar factory. In this episode, we took a deep dive on the origins of Disney Channel, it's rise to stardom, and what cause Disney channel to lose it's edge in the social media and streaming era. How the mistreatment of their talent seems to only be a symptom of a greater culture problem, and how Disney's obsessive need for control is reflected today with their out of touch responses to the WGA and SAG writer's strike.

My mind was blown when Nicky pointed out the similarities between the Lizzie McGuire movie and the plotline of Hannah Montana 🤯

the flow chart reminded me of how bridgit mendler appeared on wizards before starring in good luck charlie! and how after 1 album with hollywood records she ended up taking a step back from entertainment all together & getting multiple degrees. very interesting trajectories for all the post-miley disney stars!

That's such a good point! There were SO many times they did this I couldn't even track down them all. It shows how systematic their "pop star factory" was

There was also Good Morning Ms. Bliss which was a Disney Channel sitcom in the 80s and was canceled. Which was picked up again by CBS and revamped into Saved by the Bell. Which almost got canceled but became really popular. I wonder if Disney fumbled the bag on that one too. It did inspire a lot of Disney and Nick shows that came after.

It’s so crazy too when you think about ppl like Mitchell Muso, Emily Osmet, Alyson Stoner or Rashon Fagan who were side characters but have been in so many Disney properties. Like I remember Alyson as a child on “Mikes super short show” which they played during commercial breaks. Disney made sure not to miss another opportunity to cross promote, and use their stars to the fullest potential. It’s really sad and unfortunate especially hearing them as adults describe how they had to always be “on” they never got to make mistakes or cut loose without scrutiny to the highest degree. Carrying the weight of being our role models and for a lot of them being the provider for their families, all while juggling the ups and downs that come with being a teenager it’s no wonder that all of the stars have spiraled….I truly hope these stars have all been able to heal and unpack the trauma and burden that they were unfairly given.

I grew up with all of these products from the Disney Channel. I was crazy for the High School Musical franchise, Miley/Hannah, Camp Rock, and to this day I'm a hardcore Selena Gomez fan. It's so close to my heart that I have a subscription on Disney Plus just because of those shows and movies. Nicky did a fantastic job tying all of those points together! Amazing!

The first show I ever went in my life was a Hilary Duff concert in Brazil it's crazy to think now how famous she was to make a show here (I think it was in 2007) that's before TikTok and even before UA-cam became such a huge thing. She was famous because of Disney Channel and it was a paid channel at the time.

  • @Christabelthemedic

In my opinion, the last Disney channel show that could have really given a second golden age to Disney channel was “Girl meets World” the spin off to Boy meets World. The show did not have the creative freedom in the way Boy meets world was allowed to talk about difficult topics and realism. Disney could have use this as a spring board to sit in a new culture space, a blend of what Freeform channel was but still hitting that soft relatability for those who are sitting in or transitioning to adulthood. It seems Disney decided to regress or revert back to kid shows but even worse by only creating content with surface level ideas and no depth. In time Disney channel lost its functionality. Disney channel on tv does not exist now in certain countries, Disney plus is now the only form of this content. I think it all seems that those who can’t adapt to what is glaring at the them in the face almost always certainly loose their power to some capacity, in this case Disney defining or leading media content to create these top celebrities.

Mileys first hanah tour was infact with the cheater girls back in late 2006(as an opening act) right before miley went on her own hannah tour of 2007/8
Also side bar miley and her mum legally changed her name from desitney hope cryus to miley ray back in 2007 so Disney couldnt use her name once she left.

An interesting video. A bit of feedback, if youre interested...
    1) Check your facts, dates etc thoroughly. Your flow chart was cool but there were things out of order. From a viewers perspective, inaccurate info. makes us not trust the speaker
    2) Cut out all the times "ok" and "whoa" is said. Save the "whoa" for when something important is revealed. The second person said "ok" So. Many. Times. It was genuinely annoying.
Anyway, thats just my opinion ✌️

      Exactly.
He lost me when he talked about A Cinderella Story because that was WARNER BROS. Not Disney. And had nothing to do with Disney Channel. I got the impression that he does not know that Box Office revenue means its been released in cinemas. So thats really lazy.
All this isnt difficult to understand if you have a brain. Its like they found out something really crazy and secret. Also no tv series were to surpass 100 episodes (Wizards ended on 106, but thats including specials). So they had to have this machine.

But if Disney is a family brand, I can understand them having conditions for what their willing to promote.
They’re still greedy and a little too controlling, but I do think not all of their limits or rules were a bad thing.

I would love to hear you both talk about why you think Disney is in a downfall - all I see when looking for comment on the subject is lame anti-lgbtq perspectives. I don’t mind the lgbtq storylines and genuinely just want to know why everything is so formulaic and disgusting, which I think you do touch on here, but I’m also wanting to hear why (or if) you think EVERY Star Wars is just garbage, and all marvel movies are getting overplayed and too similar
