I delved into it a bit for a business school project & it's so wild. It was so toxic (tho y'all probably remember that) and the CEO was batshit crazy. They only sold up to a size 12. And now they're known as one of THE best places to get plus size clothes at a mainstream retailer. AE bounced back from that branding model faster than A&F by focusing on being size inclusive. But just as A&F is successfully doing the same, AE is stopping production on any size above 20. Then there's Aero who didn't change anything about their approach and got left in the dust.
This is info dumping but A&F doesn't even make logo tees anymore which was perhaps the biggest part of their old marketing strategy. The rebranding effort started in 2016, but I think they waited until the past couple of years to start pushing heavier advertising and doing influencer deals. I think they had to wait until there was a group of consumers old enough to buy clothes for themselves but young enough to not remember how toxic they were. Then consumers mid-twenties and up would get on board later.
On the note of Tana and the Cancelled podcast ☝️ She didn’t actually make $180,000. She made a few thousand in a few minutes (still impressive) and they extrapolated to get that dollar value.
