I saw one of your Tiktoks a few days ago about iconic costume designs and I immediately looked at Spotify and UA-cam to see if you have a podcast. I was shocked to know that you do not (well at that time). I’m so glad I checked it again today and that you have your first episode!!!! You guys are so intelligent and I hope you continue to do this. I’m not a big podcast listener but there was never a second that I got bored with your material. It’s so insightful and I’m learning so much. You guys are doing such a great job and both of you are so deserving to be heard!

I remember my mom being concerned about Barbie having unrealistic body standards. And I remember being confused because it seemed kinda is obvious to me that her dimensions were ridiculous and unrealistic. I mean, if u put her hair in a bun, the bun is bigger than her head, and her head's already as wide as her torso. The way my mom and the women around me talked about their bodies & how the media portrayed plus size ppl is what made the impact on me. All the kids shows would only have a plus size character/actor cast in order to make fun of them for their weight. But I definitely see how Barbie's body would have made an impact on a lot of girls.

Y’all are wrong about American Girl Dolls! I was just thinking about this today actually. There are two sides of the American girl doll coin- the dolls themselves, and the books. The dolls are based on the narrative stories of the little girls from the American girl doll books. As a little girl who leaned more toward books, even I was driven to American girl dolls as a representative of the stories that were so foundational to me growing up. You had rebellious girls, girls going through real life crisis, girls celebrating the fun of girlhood, girls with chores, etc. I got the American girl doll catalog and it was my first real “mail” that I would get when I was like nine years old. We couldn’t afford the doll, but the catalog was free and I’d love to see my “friends” on the pages. I’m 30 years old and I still remember Addie, Samantha, Molly, and Felicity.

    Barbie is gender essentialist
Its for cis afab people and trans binary people (mtf) ,not for non binary people who rejects gender.

LOVED THIS EPISODE. I have so much to say but one thing o really took from this is that they called themselves out for their flaws but what is Mattel doing to solve them ?
Also I always think a lot about consumerism and over consumption and this movie was just as rebrand.
Also that the messages about the patriarchy were good, and let’s say Barbie was taken out of the movie then that message wouldn’t have had the same reach.

1950s maybe, but boys do play with baby dolls now. Also stuffed animals can fill a caring need. I am in my 60s I played with boys toys. You don't have to be controlled by what society says
