My son can count to 100, knows all of his letters by sight and puts numbers and letters in order. He can sing at least 20 songs from beginning to end (nursery songs), he has great receptive language, but he just wont speak in conversations. He will ask for things - but only as one word sentences. He answers in one word sentences - but I feel like he is just not connecting all of this knowledge into the ability to have a conversation. I worry that not spending time around other children because of Covid is not helping.

This is my child too! He just turned three today and I’m worried that he doesn’t get enough social interactions to form meaningful sentences.

@@josie9583 HAha yes! (sorry - just saw this!) I KNOOOOW we aren't supposed to compare - I do try to remind myself of that all the time, its just so difficult. When you see your friends with kiddos the same age just talking up a STORM, you constantly start second guessing yourself, like, am I doing something wrong?? But then he sits there and writes the whole alphabet with a pen, and you can read everything but his weird little "s", and you realize - THIS is what HE wants to learn - this is what interests him - and nothing else matters right now.

Terribly concerned about my god daughter, 3 in two weeks. Babbles like an 18mth old. Defiant. Speaks in only one or two words and even they are hard to understand. Consonants seem lost, so you is only "oo". And rather than speak, she'll point instead. Parents anticipate everything and don't give her many opportunities to speak, yet tell me she's bright. I've expressed concerns and encouraged them to do something more, but they're not doing anything and I don't know what else to do!!

There are milestones for a reason, if child isn’t reaching milestones then you NEED to ask your pediatrician. Saying “oh it’s ok they can’t talk by 3 :)” because that is not considered normal.

its NOT okay kids need to reach milestones. This lackadaisical approach can ruin childrens future

I am saying this because my kid didn’t reach all milestones by 3, however by 3 ye 6 m is has already reached 4 yr milestones, and super engaged in conversation. So, I would suggest following CDC guidelines which I believe is far more useful. Anyway, don’t have to panic unless the symptoms match too close to any major syndromes / ADHD

I have 3 kids oldest is 15 youngest is 4 none of my kids could do a lot of this stuff they are saying they should be able to do. my 4 year old just turned 4 and he doesnt tell me about his day at his age either. none of my kids did. but my daughter is the valedictorian of her class pretty much every year and my 6 year old just past kindergarten. for get this stuff for now. its probably people that never had kids learned what they know out of some text book in school. they develop at their own pace. I personally wouldn't worry about it. Id say from experience if they cant talk in complete sentences and thoughts and feelings by 5 maybe then you have a problem. cause they should beable to start learning in school. but 3 and half they seriously barely know anything. mine didnt really start talking all the way like communicate clearly till about 4.5 years old. yes they can say a few short sentences and words before then. but 3 year old especially if its a boy are constantly distracted into what they want to do. a toddler still runs around and dumps toys every where some where from 4-5 they magically calm down thats when they are really ready to start learning. thats why preschool is for 4 year olds. and school is when they are 5. they learn some stuff before 5 but its more passive like you read them some books and they pick up some words. or you keep talking to them. but kids under 4 are just a bundle of energy good luck having one of the display kids they have on these shows thats perfectly tempered and camera ready ect. I guarentee you took the kid a lot of practice to get there especially on camera. my 4 year old see a camera and he wants to have it. he wants to pose for it ect he wont just behave like he would if there was no camera. thats just my experiences. my 2 cents just incase your worried. I wouldnt be. you could always have a company like perna and take a look and see what they think no harm in that.

Have you talked to your pediatrician about this? That sounds a lot like my 3.5 year old, who has a speech delay due to autism. I think it’s definitely worth asking for an evaluation with a speech therapist. If you live in the United States, your local school district will pay for the evaluation as part of determining if your child needs what is called an IEP, an individualized education plan. My son gets speech and occupational therapy through the school district and attends preschool a few days a week.

@@MrChris7582 thanks for sharing this. My son is about to turn 3 only and only says a few words but understands everything and follows directions . He gets distracted easily which is perfectly normal for a boy and isn’t into puzzles etc just wants to play outdoors . ( boys energy) I initially started to worry but now I let him be. Don’t force him to do things he doesn’t want to do. He does go for speech therapy once a week and that’s helping him and we talk to him non stop at home .it’s a slow process but he’s getting there slowly . World of a difference from my daughter who when she was 2 was reading words from her books . But thanks for sharing your children’s development .

I wouldn't worry about it too much. thats the point. seems like you took some proactive steps to make sure he gets "caught up" but to be honest I never did any of that stuff and by the time they were ready to head to kindergarten they were all where they were supposed to be. my 4 year old didnt talk except for a few words when I wrote that post. now hes 4 and a half and he wont stop talking. its amazing how fast it can happen.

Useless, I'm stopping at halfway through. Some University drongo with most likely no kids of her own telling everyone what to expect from your kid. Because you really should have expectations shouldn't you. And a bunch of commenters bragging how gifted their kid is compared to the other terribly concerned commenters who are disappointed their kid can't recite Shakespeare.

Their anti-male slant is utterly unprofessional. Sadly, it dovetails perfectly with the “males, especially white males are responsible for all the world’s woes” narrative. At a guess, Blondie is responsible for at least 95% of the most significant scientific discoveries of this century, and we should all bow down and thank her for her brilliance. 🤮
