100% this is a great drill. It will help massively if you have issues with a left club path. David Ledbetter teaches this take away. The extension is, take away, set the club lag then rotate the torso. 💯
I was taught the first position back was low with the club face square to the target with the shaft pointing to the target You have the club face closed and the shaft pointing to the left. I will say there are many ways to get the club in position at the top, but starting with a closed club face might lead a lot of people to hooks and chunk shots.
It's because he only shows (knowingly or not) like 4/5 of the take-away. This body rotation only move should be coupled with a gradual but small wrist cock. Then the shaft will roll slightly to more neutral and the shaft will be parallel to stance line and ground.
If the hole looks like the one he’s playing, I know that I’m screwed before I step up to the ball. A required draw, which is not in my playbook, is needed. A straight ball goes way to the right, ends in trouble. I’d tee off with a 5-iron and keep it in play in the middle In fact, I’ve always wanted to try a round where don’t hit anything bigger than a five iron and simply focus on keeping each shot in play right at the hole. For some reason I really believe I’d score better if I did this
Guaranteed you'll score better. Or how about teeing off with a 5 wood. But anyway I teed off with a 5 iron many times when I can't find my driver. Works a ton and your concentration levels go up on your next shot. If you got a decent short game you'll have no problem 😊
Striking the ball pure, I use this video every other month when I feel my take away is too far out and then I under compensate by taking it inside to quickly. This gets me back in check
Brilliant drill, for further understang of this look at the steering wheel takeaway drill also. It teaches the correct rotation of the forearms, which is critically important.
Hey man, so I'm about 260 lbs. Very thick in the chest, mid section and arms. I've always found that in order for me to keep my arms connected to my chest and my hands close to me it seriously limits my range of motion. It does very well for me in chip shots, as I don't need a dynamic or powerful swing. I also play with a neutral to weak grip and so when I am swinging my irons. Anything from 8 iron and up, I have to allow my arms to separate from my body in order to lengthen my swing and pick up speed. Ive been told that I need to watch john rahm, we are similarly built and he is able to generate great power with a short compact swing. Anyway, when I take the club back I roll the club face open (this isn't a problem for me, the closing of the club face just prior to impact is a power generator for me and I have above average hand speedn with powerful wrist and above average timing/hand eye coordination(I grew up the son of a professional boxer) the main problem is the inconsistentcy that comes from disconecting.my arms and body. Do you have any recommendations. I really appreciate any help thank you
This is correct.I shot my best round feeling this.the club feels like its in front of your hands.Low hands is the key.Its easy to come over the top though. It takes the correct down swing to make this work
Getting to where the hand is close to the body and the club head is in front is easy. The problem is how to get to the top of the swing from there. A super slow video showing how it is done would be superb!
I literally shaved about 15-20 strokes off of my score because of this drill. My takeaway was horrible and so was my golf game. I don’t top any balls anymore and sure I’ll hit and occasional toe shot, but I’m way way way better just by practicing this takeaway before every shot
@@tonyrodd6348 for like the first two feet, don't fan open the club face. Imagine it as a mirror and keep the ball in the middle of the mirror. From then on set your wrists, it should help give a good bow shape and increase ball compression at impact.
Listed as a “fire” tip and for once it is!! Took me a few range sessions to get right but if you bring your hands in and leave the club outside it totally changes your swing. A shorter, more compact swing with good distance and accuracy. 👍
Be AWARE...I started doing this drill 2 yrs. ago and now I can't do my backswing without pausing as shown in the vid...not a big deal, I hit the ball great, but I get a lot of comments on the links about the "pause" in my backswing! But this is a GREAT drill for a proper takeaway and seems to get and keep your swing on plane on the downswing...
There is nothing wrong with the first way of taking the club back, its called single plane swing what Ben Hogan did. It works great for myself because I am not as flexible in shoulders and I have broad shoulders.
I agree.I started taking the club away the first way he did it and it has completely changed my game. My contact, consistency, is amazing. As you said Hogan did this. The problem with instructors today is they want you to have their swing. You have to swing what works for you.
@@tomb4060 I am a beginner so I didnt know much about golf but in last few months I observed what pros do and their swing varies, the takeaway and backswing really is individual choice, but the downswing is all the same. I guess people teach what they know. Its great to hear when it works for other people as it did for me. Just came back from the best range session since I started now I need to repeat the same on the course which is whole other ball game haha

Never understood this take back/take away. The wrists break at the top anyways which is the same on ANY take backs. If you superimpose the top of the swings they’re all in the same position. The important thing is coming back and hitting it square and good rotation and keeping stability.
I think I do it to make sure that I have no tension in the arms. So by doing this, it allows me to reassure that my arms aren't tensed up. Or its just one of those little things I do unconsciously which is a good thing!
Terrible drill. This doesn’t explain anything. Most people will now start hooking the ball if the club goes back to far closed. They aren’t Jim Furyk. Don’t teach people to do this. It is no good.
So the problem is when I take it away normal I have a hard time with the sequence. I get wayyy better ball striking when I come in shallow. But then it makes it look like I’m coming in over the top on my down swing.
“Hands stay in close to you and your club face stays in front of you?” I couldn’t figure out what you were talking about based on the image and your words 🤔
I thought the same thing. Of course you have simps that think this was the best lesson they ever found. Lmao I need to start making videos of lessons I guess. No effort needed and give the most basic tips 👌
This is why golf instruction is ao complicated.....so many moves that are not fully explained. When I started playing golf in late 1970's I modeled Jack Nicklaus with a flying elbow then later swung like Couples and would lift the club and turn my hips toward the target. I could Boom the ball back then with the ability of driving some short part fours with my Perssimon head or smqll steel headed driver. It felt natural then. I started reading instructions and have over 100 golf instruction books. This instruction would have changed Couples, Furyk, Trevino and many other half if fame golfers. Plus it was not finished.....he said take the club back to that 1position "then swing through"......but after that position is forearm turn and a set.....then after that what are the thoughts for the downswing? There is a lot of golf swing after that position. I have found to improve a good player who has good mobility and athleticism, these positions are helpful, but to a player who is just recreational swinging comfortably and with rythm is more important than positions....IMO
It doesn’t matter one bit hope you take the club back. The ONLY thing that matters is that you get the correct position at impact. Forward shaft lean with a relatively square club face depending on which shot shape you’re playing.
You're some what correct. However, Takeaway is so crucial to get to that correct impact position like you're saying. its the first movement to set yourself up properly so need to ensure it is done correctly.
@@golfslump of course it has to be somewhat fundamentally sound. My point is that there are many different ways to take the club back and set it for the downswing. Tour players are the evidence for this. It’s an individual thing and no one correct way to do it. All that matters is that you can repeat it consistently to get to impact.
@@mandymhull39 yes I agree. But you have to realise I’m trying to make it as easy as possible for average amateur golfers. Not all of them will have the same natural talent as for example Jim furyk to manipulate their planes
@@golfslump Ok, I get that. I think online instruction is difficult because of this. Everyone is much too different. That may be the simplest way to take it away for some amateurs, but not all. I feel like most online coaches don’t explain WHY they’re teaching something. If they explained why, the people watching it would be able to make better decisions and adjustments.
This move is not really debatable, it can be added to pretty much any swing. There are many different takes on what a golf swing should or shouldn’t look like, but any coach will tell you to get the club in this position on the takeaway. Despite how different the golf swings are on the major tours, this first movement going back is very consistent amongst tour pros.
