Here’s the thing, these artists are at the top of their field, experienced musicians with music and soul in their bones, and in their blood. They don’t try to outshine each other, they complement each other. Listen to the phrasing of the guitar, note perfect, it comes alive because of the musician, like the guitar is talking, expressing its own view of how magical these people really are together. Donald Fagan’s lingering, soulful piano, my god it doesn’t get any better. Wonderful. All of them.
This song is our favorite concert memory. My wife and I were standing in line outside the U. of Toledo sports arena on Sunday April 21, 1974, waiting for the doors to open for our first Steely Dan concert. It was so unusually warm that all the arena windows were open, when we suddenly heard the sound of "Pretzel Logic" being played live during the band's soundcheck. When they got to the song's bridge, and the line "Well I stepped up on the platform," we heard a voice that we knew was no longer Donald Fagen's. Two hours later, when they played it to a live audience, we could put Michael McDonald's face with that incredible voice we had had heard earlier. That was our introduction to Michael, a year before he would join The Doobie Brothers on tour to replace an ailing Tom Johnston.
God, would you tools stop talking abut auto tune while you talk about this.. and guess what.. there is auto tune on his voice here.. so ya not so smart... lol
Jon Herrington on lead guitar - a major contribution to this magic-ianship. Just think what we would have missed if Don hadn't said; "Play another riff Jon, play another riff". This concert version has been resounding in my head for months now, it just won't go away - and I keep coming back here - pure addiction and I don't care. Thanks guys.

This just has to be the best live performance I have ever watched in my entire life! I'd love to hear Mr McDonald sing the whole of that tune....Mr Fagan and Mr Scaggs just fabulous!! ❤️🎈💜💝💛💙💞🥂💘😘🤭💖💋
My wife (girlfriend at the time) and I saw this live from the balcony at Lincoln Center in NYC. There were PBS cameras throughout the venue with one about 5 feet to the left of us. I donated $100 to Channel 13, the NYC PBS carrier who sponsored the event, and received two tickets for my generosity. The performance was among the best I've ever seen. After the show ended, Donald Fagan announced to the audience that the recording crew need some songs to be redone. He went on to say that the audience could stay if they wished while they re-recorded some tracks. Almost no one left. Knowing that this would be released for sale at some point, I left anxiously awaiting that time. I snapped up the DVD once it was available and watched it right away. Although the DVD performance is really great, the live event seemed to have so much more energy. I've subsequently seen Steely Dan and Boz Scaggs perform live. Don't miss an opportunity if they play anywhere near your town. BTW If you want to hear a really great version of this song, and many other great performances, get the album, New York Rock and Soul Review. Michael McDonald's portion is amazing. Love Fagan saying, “Take another eight.” He may have needed time to think of the words, but I think he was just digging Herrington’s guitar. Either way, that’s the beauty of love music performed by pro players!

I’ve been obsessin’ over SD ever since I heard do it again on the radio in ‘72 or 73. Not one time have I grown tired of SD music, I can’t get enough of it. when I saw them in Houston in the 90s, I have to admit that I cried too when i heard those complicated chords coming over the PA System. Three titans with legendary and unique voices. Herrington is a god. Wish Becker was here. Boz Scaggs is still sooo strong on the vocals and guitar. Thanks boys!
The intro of Donald noodling around is just so beautiful. He seriously is a fantastic pianist, his writing and production skills always takeaway from how skilled he is at his improvising.
In 1999 they brought in a motivational speaker to improve the "morale" in our stock brokerage office. After delivering a half hour of the most inane platitudes, the guy turned to us and said " any questions?" My friend Kevin, the most sarcastic guy ever, raised his hand, pointed downward and said " where did you get those shoes?" We all looked at the guy's shoes, all scuffed and dirty and laughed him out of the office. The next day our manager quit. A Steely Dan moment!
I had the great pleasure of seeing Michael McDonald in person several years ago. This man can belt out the soul like you wouldn't believe, without breaking a sweat. His rendition of Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" was killer. I also had the great pleasure of seeing Steely Dan a couple of years later. zzzzzzzz could be your l;ack of finding good stuff, and having an more open mind. Plus, this is doctored performances. For sure the Donald's vocal is "pitch corrected" And music is music even if you don't think it is. even if AI makes it. You don't get to decide. Me, 62 year old , life long multi instrumentalist, producer who loves something in everything. That is MUSIC
This whole ensemble of musicians, as well as this particular song,.. is a gift from God !
Amen!
No god, just talented people.
The three best musicians of the 70's on one stage? Amazing!
They are so right...the days of this great music are gone forever...and I am so sorry 😢
WOW! Michael McDonald; Boz Scaggs? And that band? Donald @ the helm? Can’t get any better than that!!!😌❤️🎶🎹👍🏾
I do have to admit I got goosebumps on this one. The excellence of production, MMD, the jazzy complex melodies. the guitar work, EVERYTHING. These are SEASONED, GENIUS musicians in action. Scaggs is underrated. Fagen is a genius. MMD is ridiculous.
Me too. Chills up and down. Sooo good!
Yes yes and yes
Ive been to 4 Boz concets, not underrated in my house, voice like silk. Best backup singers that have ever sung backup.
No auto tune here...I can’t get enough of Fagan’s brilliance
There's some autotune here and there, but who cares.
there's nothing wrong with using pitch correction. don't be a reactionary...
@@jimmythebold589 It is when its used too much like in American Idol. Its kills the emotion. I actually hardly heard it here to be honest and have a musical background
@@timhugill9836 ?? you dont hear it ? Im musically trained and i do.
Are you s recording engineer? I am.
There is on Donald's microphpne.
2- why bring up auto tune, can't you just enjoy this?
3- you sound like an old mummy's fart with your needless auto tune crap.
Don't listen then.. and again... there is on this live recording and many others you likely enjoy and don't realize.. so stop.
I love that the guitarsolo is not the same as on the record; Jon is giving his own twist on it!
Agree
At 65, I've seen my fair share of live concerts. Seeing this amazing collection of talent at their Toronto show remains one of my favourite shows. Boz Scaggs really is a scene stealer.
Saw Boz with the future ‘Toto’ boys in 76 . Silk degrees was just coming out .
The Boz man, just incredible, so much genuine talent.
Phoebe Snow (RIP) belts out a couple of powerful songs.
@@473mec that was a fabulous story you just told me and yes I will look for those versions you've mentioned to me .. thankyou so much for this 🥳🥂
@@473mec god I love pheobe snow too.. 🥂
@@jackiemreekie4637 She was an amazing artist in every aspect. I wish I had been able to see her perform live. I'm glad you liked the story. This music should be enjoyed by all. Spread the joy. Below is a snippet, but you would enjoy the entire album. It looks to be out of print but used copies are available on ebay and elsewhere. ua-cam.com/video/ZRVnx3J1ppU/v-deo.html
@@473mec I never knew that she has passed.... I loved her cover of Paul McCartneys "Every Nite" ... But back to those 3 legends! Who on earth managed to get all of them on to the one stage?? I'm 61 now but I was only in my early teens when it was all happening for them. What an era for such fabulous music and thankyou again for the links! Appreciated .. XXX 🥂💖🎈🎊🎉
To whomever conceived this combination of talent - thank you!
Just doesn't get any better than this. I've been a huge fan of Steely Dan since their first album in 1972. I'm also a huge fan of Michael McDonald...
I loved McDonald's voice in the background of some of the Steely Dan songs. Not everyone was a fan of their music from the beginning. To each their own. Doesn't detract from Steely Dan's unique style!!
I love the slow almost ponderous way it starts and it just builds up and up. Those days are gone forever 😢
We had the BEST time right ?!
I love the way boz tilts his head back when he is singing, trival maybe, but the Boz man can do no wrong ❤🎉❤🎉
All hail the Boz man, brilliant, brilliant, Boz ❤❤🎉
Such confidence to play this song at such a slow tempo.
Too slow for me!
@@kristindeppe6752 Play at 1.25x ;-)
I know Peter. I kept waiting for it to pick up in my brain ! Still very brilliant !
it was perfect, y'all are insane 😂
Drummer is killing it playing and best sounding drums ever👍👍👍
Shannon Forrest, drummer of Toto for the last years
Beautiful set up terrific playing
@@danvincent2600 if you say so. Tbh I never liked him during Toto. I'm a Jeff-Simom guy, but he's obviously not a bad drummer
@@davidzuniga9362 I'm also among the fans who prefer Jeff & especially Simon with Toto; but Shannon also did a really decent job with the band. He could have been a little more original to himself though.
@@CaptainSpyware yeah but tbh I liked some of his playing a lot. For example (I hope my memory is right on this one) Simon played the fill of English eyes differently than Jeff did. But Shannon played it the same way as Jeffrey did
McDonald, Don, Boz, and these artist , is this heaven ?
Musical magic performed by an Elite group of musicians! My perfection! God does exist! In all of us!….Some of us, a bit more!…lol
Love Fagan saying, “Take another eight.” He may have needed time to think of the words, but I think he was just digging Herrington’s guitar. Either way, that’s the beauty of love music performed by pro players!
No that was for walter but nice analysis
Live music of that quality can bring me to tears of love, happiness, & gratitude!
My heart yearns for Walter. Donald as always, is very chill. Michael, oh Michael, this is your new home. Just brilliant.
3 of the smoothest voices in rock history singing harmony. Pure joy
Wow, Boz's voice is better than ever!
Just unbelievable!!! This is brillant!!
Saw Boz in Auckland New Zealand in the 70s open air concert bloody awesome
Boz performed at the Edmonton Folk Music Festival about 10 years ago. What an amazing treat and bucket list experience to see him there!
You can't beat this quality of musicianship.
I don't own a yacht. This rocks.
" This might be a long time ago ." But it was HUGE & BEAUTIFUL!
Herrington's solo is a masterful interpretation and flawless in execution. His understated style is what does it for me.
Wow! The moment the audience realizes the song Donald Fagan is about to play. Goosebumps!...
Damn, I'd love to have seen this live. Nailed Pretzel Logic.
Pretty sure these guys nailed everything they play, excellence is not the exception it’s the practice.
Three icons on stage doing what they do best playing real instruments and preforming flawlessly with a amazing band....this performance was phenomenal!!! Donald, Boz and Michael are true musicians that play timeless music...loved it!! Kids this is real music take notes🔥🔥🔥🔥
"Three icons on stage?" uhhhh....more like FOUR icons!! You gotta give the great guitarist Jon Herrington' his props ALSO!!
I saw the Dukes of September in Raleigh awhile back and they were incredible! What will we do when all these guys are gone? I've been a huge fan of Steely Dan for 50 years now, since I was a freshman at UNC-Chapel in 1974....I guess I'm getting old too.
New Zealand stands and applauds.
Three of the all-time Masters! These men/groups are in all of the most fantastic and memorable moments of my life.
Thanks for being there ❤
I’ve always loved Steely Dan and the Doobies, to have seen this “Super Group” would have been a bucket list event
Ladies and gentlemen.......LEGENDS!!!!!......so glad I got to grow up with such talented musicians and performers......LOVE IT!!!!!
Pure class....and Boz still has such a great distinct voice. Superb!!!!!!
I remember when...... music was GUD, those days are gone forever
Not even remotely. Check out some Tedeschi Trucks Band. Lots of torch carrying going on. it just isn't on radio.
@@psalmer5690 this x1000- best touring band out there with outstanding musicians in their craft
I’m on my third wife, bless their hearts, but still on my first Steely Dan after 52 years.
One word “Perfection”
Three titans with legendary and unique voices. Herrington is a god. Wish Becker was here. Boz Scaggs is still sooo strong on the vocals and guitar. Thanks boys!
The intro of Donald noodling around is just so beautiful. He seriously is a fantastic pianist, his writing and production skills always takeaway from how skilled he is at his improvising.
BIG Steely Dan fan and this was a joy to watch. Never saw the Dukes of September but if they ever tour again…..I’m there!!
I love the way they slowed it down a little and added more blues. Awesome Version.
I could listen to Jon Herington play all day. The man is awesome 😎.
If there’s one song that captures SD’s brilliant cynicism and sarcasm, this is it. Brilliant.
I have met people who don't get them at all!! I don't know how they miss the excellence though.
The whole Pretzel Logic album is a brilliant portrayal of the world, then and now...Charlie Freak is so poignant...Barrytown, So many great songs...:)
@@godbluffvdgg Without a doubt…one of their absolute best
In 1999 they brought in a motivational speaker to improve the "morale" in our stock brokerage office. After delivering a half hour of the most inane platitudes, the guy turned to us and said " any questions?" My friend Kevin, the most sarcastic guy ever, raised his hand, pointed downward and said " where did you get those shoes?" We all looked at the guy's shoes, all scuffed and dirty and laughed him out of the office. The next day our manager quit. A Steely Dan moment!
Just massively KILLED IT OMG !!! ❤❤❤❤. No auto tune there Boyz & Girlz ….just iconic GOD given talent !!! BRAVO indeed
To seem them performing together again (with the great Boz Scaggs in the mix?) is a real treat. It doesn't get better than that.
Saw Steely Dan in 2011. It was like a religious experience. They were amazing.
the "Boz" sounds as soulful as ever, and Michael McDonald excellent as always. TDOS awesome.
70’s rule! Steely Dan, does it get any better than this?
