Andrej, you are absolutely correct - These Steely Dan songs are like fine bottles of wine - every one of them is different and special. And the time and effort that went into recording them is legendary. This is an excellent live cover of the song. Every instrument and break in the song is spot on. The lead singer does a great job, but he is only slightly missing the lower vocal range that Fagan has, and Fagan has a tendency to overemphasize the enunciations of the words in areas of the song. Also, during the chorus, Fagan sings the lower harmony and the backup singers sing the higher parts. In this version the lead singer does not go low. So the vocals are missing a little of the bottom of the original version. Great job nonetheless....
To fill out the family tree, the backing vocalists at 2:13 (L-R) are lead vocalist Kipp Lennon's brother Pat and cousins Mark and Mike Lennon. Kipp and Pat are the younger brothers of The Lennon Sisters from TV's "The Lawrence Welk Show." The seated vocalist is Rick Livingstone, former member of the 1990 supergroup, The Best, that also included Baxter, Joe Walsh, Keith Emerson, Simon Phillips and John Entwistle.
Kip you’re as good as they come. Thank you for all your work over the years. Well done. Skunk you’re still one of the greatest lead guitarist who ever played. Love all your music.
I have watched this literally 100's of times and never once does it fail to make me smile from the first note. Artists at the very very top of their professions and loving every minute of what they are doing. Proper musicians
@@stevehazlewood2960It's always a question at this type of show: do you play it studio perfect (i.e., what everyone wants to hear--what the entire band was doing), or do you 'continue to grow as an artist' and disappoint everyone, lol.
I keep coming back to this one, Songs like this sure make me miss my youth, We had the best music and music was real… I love everything about this, Kip Lennon and his family never miss a note, Rick Livingston Looks amazing still!!! I saw his tribute to Keith Emerson from when All of them formed “ The Best” And It made me cry, And Jeff Baxter is super talented and super intelligent man. Merry Christmas Everybody!!!!
EVERYONE on that stage is amazing. Kipp nails that vocal, and Skunk........! The entirety of this performance exceeds the definition of stunning. Wow, just wow!
Happy 50th Rikki! And thank you, Skunk, for the guitar solo that set the standard for all Dan guitar solos to follow. I promise you that I've been looping those 35 glorious seconds through my head, note for note, the entire fifty years since I first heard them.
I know what you mean and I think it has partially to do with the fact that the song is nearly 50 years old 😮, and has been in our collective conscious for a long time, this performance taking us back to our days of youth in a simpler time.
I remember the song hitting the air in 1974. It was the best tune on the radio for a long time. But....with AM radio over GM factory speaker the words get mashed and obliterated so you didn't get the actual lyrics. Even if I did know the real lyrics they would not have much meaning to a teenager. But as you age and accumulate life experience, good & bad & so-so, the lyrics take on a meaning you didn't see before through your young eyes. Most of the rock/pop artists were 10 to 15 years older than me at the time. A 15 yr old just can't relate to the emotional expressions of a 30 yr old being told through music. Now that music quality has drastically changed (equip-wise) its easier to understand the lyrics and the subtlety of the music. Plus 50 years of life experience adds more meaning to the words.
Kipp Lennon is amazing, Skunk hasn't lost anything, but listen to the drummer. Just perfect to the original. Simply a great performance of this timeless Steely Dan classic.
The drummer was great, but not true to the original, and neither was Skunk on his own famous solo, but maybe they made those few slight changes on purpose. It was still an excellent performance.
A load of old men (not unlike me) - making fabulous, polished music. Brilliant. And- my favourite bass player with all the right notes and a golden tone.
Kipp Lennon does an excellent job as lead singer on this song. His version sounds exactly as the original version. Kipp is a talented performer with a great voice.
It's strange watching these old dudes doing these songs again. It's kind of comforting because I'm the same age and to hear them sound just as good, or better makes me happy.
As we were growing up it seemed inconceivable that rock n rollers could ever continue on and be relegated than oldie circuit like Chuck Berry and the way Ricky Nelson described it in "Garden Party" Then it seemed we would all haver to turn into country artists because at least they were able to continue on creating as they got older. But somewhere around the time that American Idol was ruining RnR a lot of the older cats said to hell with that here's what real music being played by real musicians sound and yes NOW looks like. Thank God for that too because while we were all looking down at sheet music and fretboards and keyboard keys back in the 60's and 70's the kids all started looking at their cell phones and most never bothered putting in all the hours and hours of hard work that it takes to even be a hack like myself. The thing about it too is with the way their minds are so sharp and operate on such an increased level of speed from years of playing video games some, if they applied themselves could really move the craft even further into the future. My son is a perfect example of that. He started out on The Beatles Rock Band which led him to piano lessons and in a years time his teacher could show him no more as he surpassed her level. I wish I would see more guitar cases in the hands of kids these days and less cell phone activity.
....it makes me feel the way i felt when i was....15 maybe....i loved hearing the song on the radio...it was so unique...and ambiguous...is Rikki....a boy...or a girl......you tell yourself your'e not my kind...but you don't even know your mind...it's so 70s...and sexy...
I have to say that this song was on the radio so much that I didn't like it. Now, many years have passed and I am enjoying it for the great song it is. Thank you steely dan.
Not only is Kip a tremendous soloist and backup singer, but he can sound like almost anybody what he wants to. It's nice to see people recognizing his talent. I know Jeff Baxter was incredibly impressed with his vocal skills.
Holy crap. Kip Lennon sounds more like D. Fagan than D. Fagan. Every tiny nuance captured. Amazing job. Skunk not as fast or as clean as in his youth but good to see these old rockers still going at it. Love this Steely Dan Classic
I couldn’t disagree more. I think he’s trying to sound like fagan and it’s working to his detriment but a vocalist should never try to sound like another, it happens sometimes sure, but it shouldn’t be deliberate. The reason fagans voice works with steely Dan is a mystery. It’s arguably a voice that only he could make work which is what makes the band special. I think this guys sounds similar but doesn’t capture the steely Dan “magic”.
@@rantinghippie6796 The singer is also clearly out of tune at some notes, in the beginning is pretty clear for instance...But he was saved by the backing vocals and he knows it ! :-)
I agree... Kip killed it... I do this song, and several other Steely Dan classics in a Piano Upright bass drums trio... I play upright and sing all the Steely Dan songs... I think I do a pretty good job, but not quite as good as Kip does... He nails it...

Millions of true knowledgeable fans!!!! Most of the younger generation (you included) don't know that most songs today are 30 to 50 years old and have since been remastered/melodies/notes changed while retaining the original words/melody.! People who are knowledgeable in music always laugh at (usually younger and nonmusical) people when they hear a song and say wow that's a great NEW SONG when in fact the song is 30 to 50 years old and has been sung by 4 or 5 people/groups or singers during that time of which became a hit for one or two of the people singing/playing them. It will take time for you to really learn and appreciate music and the history of a song. Do you know how many bands/singers have covered this song?? Do you know the singers, do you know who Skunk Baxter is????? Clueless. Don't worry as you age you will eventually understand far better than you do now.! Enjoy!

Unless there's a Renaissance led by the youth of that future generation who recognize the greatness of the music 100 years before their time and resurrect it. We enjoy the musical genius of bygone eras (e.g. Bach, Mozart, Bethoven), even performing some of it on period instruments. There's no reason to think that the same pattern won't repeat itself - human beings seem to be wired that way.

The seated vocalist is Rick Livingstone, former member of the 1990 supergroup, The Best, that also included Baxter, Joe Walsh, Keith Emerson, Simon Phillips and John Entwistle.
Thank you. People keep posting that Kipp is Jackson Browne. :(
Just a note: Kipp, Pat, and Mark Lennon were live vocalists in Roger Waters world tour, THE WALL, five or six years ago.
But Skunk fucked up the solo...oh well nobodys perfect...
Agree. This production brings me chills, and memories of the first release of the song. The layers in this rendition are amazing.
@@stevehazlewood2960 The solo was fine dickhead.
@@stevehazlewood2960It's always a question at this type of show: do you play it studio perfect (i.e., what everyone wants to hear--what the entire band was doing), or do you 'continue to grow as an artist' and disappoint everyone, lol.
Wonderful song, wonderful musicians!
Absolutely stunning. Thank you one and all. Skunk, you're my hero. I wanna be like you when I grow up. I'm 67.
I keep coming back to this one, Songs like this sure make me miss my youth, We had the best music and music was real… I love everything about this, Kip Lennon and his family never miss a note, Rick Livingston Looks amazing still!!! I saw his tribute to Keith Emerson from when All of them formed “ The Best”
And It made me cry, And Jeff Baxter is super talented and super intelligent man.
Merry Christmas Everybody!!!!
Professional musicians at the top of their game and talent on display. This is, simply put, how it is done.
Straight up
Impeccable Rendition One of my fave's
Nathan - in demand again - best bass player ever
Well said!
Yes Nathan East is really really cool.
Nathan East on Bass! Sooo talented!!
agreed.. a mighty giant of the electric bass. check him out with Clapton doing "Can't Find My Way Home." goosebumps
OMG!!! F-ING AMAZING AND SOOOOOOO SPOT ON!!!! EXCELLENT EXCELLENT EXCELLENT!!!!!!
Always in the pocket
EVERYONE on that stage is amazing. Kipp nails that vocal, and Skunk........! The entirety of this performance exceeds the definition of stunning. Wow, just wow!
A Doobie at that !!!!
Jeff "Skunk" Baxter and Denny Dias, should have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with Steely Dan!
Yes.his personality shows in the music. Precise and intricate. The music couldn't been invented this way without them.
Maybe when the Doobies get inducted will Jeff Baxter get his due.
The RRHOF is total BS. Who gives a F*** who those self-appointed arbiters of taste select.
again....totally agree!
Yes totally, I agree with you. Kipp did nail this one.
it ain't just Skunk , every one o those guys up there is a master
Yes
Totally!
The bass player is very accomplished
This is top notch - not some BS rendition!! Forwarding to my guitar genius son who 29.
Yeah....Nathan East is just a beast. You can throw him in any song with any line up knock it out of the park.
I saw skunk before in Montana. He actually has a life beyond music,he's a good citizen of the west
He's a genius. For real.
Happy 50th Rikki! And thank you, Skunk, for the guitar solo that set the standard for all Dan guitar solos to follow. I promise you that I've been looping those 35 glorious seconds through my head, note for note, the entire fifty years since I first heard them.
Amen ❤
Just saw Skunk Baxter this weekend. Great as ever at age 75!
This is the most amazing cover. Kip nails it! Oh....and Skunk!
Not sure why this song makes me cry these days. It just does. There's a heavy melancholy to it I never noticed before.
I agree, feels sad somehow
I noticed myself getting sentimental several years back. Music takes me on a new and different trip these daze!
You're far from alone, I suggest...
Kipp Lennon is amazing, Skunk hasn't lost anything, but listen to the drummer. Just perfect to the original. Simply a great performance of this timeless Steely Dan classic.
...and Nathan....
He is the younger brother of the Lennon sisters.
Who's the drummer? He's excellent
As Skunk himself duly noted at the end.
Unbelievable!!!
I really like his harmony during the chorus
He looks like kevin sorbo
It's strange watching these old dudes doing these songs again. It's kind of comforting because I'm the same age and to hear them sound just as good, or better makes me happy.
Annette!!!! I am in a garag4e band and we cant even play this complex song...love it though
Yes he sounds great
Annette, I feel the exact same way. We had the best, and didn't realize it at the time.
....it makes me feel the way i felt when i was....15 maybe....i loved hearing the song on the radio...it was so unique...and ambiguous...is Rikki....a boy...or a girl......you tell yourself your'e not my kind...but you don't even know your mind...it's so 70s...and sexy...
I have to say that this song was on the radio so much that I didn't like it. Now, many years have passed and I am enjoying it for the great song it is.
Thank you steely dan.
I'm really impressed with Kipp's vocals on this song.
Not only is Kip a tremendous soloist and backup singer, but he can sound like almost anybody what he wants to. It's nice to see people recognizing his talent. I know Jeff Baxter was incredibly impressed with his vocal skills.
....he did an exquisite job......very haunting...time stood still....
It is INEXPLICABLE that the entire country doesn't know Kipp, Marky, Mike and Pat by name. They only have 40 songs as good as this Steely Dan classic.
yep awesome
Skunk is one of the most under appreciated musicians ever.
I agree... Kip killed it... I do this song, and several other Steely Dan classics in a Piano Upright bass drums trio... I play upright and sing all the Steely Dan songs... I think I do a pretty good job, but not quite as good as Kip does... He nails it...
hahahaha so true kip fagen ,however baxter is better on the official one
I am so fortunate to have grown up in the 60's and 70's.... Best music ever! There have been some great songs over the years but overall.... It's songs like this that made my younger years so memorable. Thanks guys...

Enjoy!
We were so spoiled. I thought this sound was just okay… we were in the best era of human existence when it came to musical creativity.
It can be beaten some decades in the future… but for our lifetimes, let’s just say that we were blessed.
We were blessed.
Even after all of these years, Jeff Baxter still has the fingers and the chops.
And the mustache
Played pretty poorly on this though.
Such an under appreciated guitarist. Fantastic body of work and so subtle in his phrasing and licks.
@@LynchyVidz His Over drive sound and his clean sound were not balanced in volumes and it put him off when he went for the solo. He dropped a few notes in the transition.
I keep coming back to this. The song and the players, just brilliant!
GLAD I WAS BORN EARLY😊 THE MUSIC THAT WE HAVE THEN😊 WHAT A TIME😉
that guitar lead still gives me chills... Magic
Lead singer Kipp Lennon is amazing! Perfect vocal rendition! Thank you.
Ah yes the summer of my youth. At the beach as often as we could. I can still feel the sun on my shoulders.
All these decades later no one can match Skunk's brilliance
I saw Kip sing with Ambrosia last year and he was fantastic. I love a singer who tries to capture the nuances of the original vocal. Great all around performance of all here.
A magical performance, Kip sings it like Fagan, and Skunk is sublime, - great band great song!
Kipp Lennon lead singer on here, what a fantastic job he did x
I have watched this countless times. Never gets old.
Absolutely stunning. Made the hairs stand up and brought tears to my eyes remembering my youth
Memories of 1974, I was in the United States Marine Corps stationed at Camp LeJeune North Carolina. I had orders to transfer me to Okinawa for 13 months. It was so hard to say goodbye to my cute girlfriend. I remember our "last" kiss, then she cried like a baby. It broke my heart.
amen to that brother
me too
@ USMC 73-77 I surely hope she is still in your days. Went active USAF same year.
glad I'm not the only one that ended up with tears in eye eyes... some music just transports you... !
Great performance . These guys are the cream of the crop . There is a lot of talent there on stage and off . How can you go wrong , with six part harmony rehearsed to perfection . I am an older semi retired player in my seventies , and being able to access all of the terrific video libraries of first class bands on line is sure a nice treat for an old guy like me , a real nice treat .
Wow long time Dan fan but the lead vocalist is absolutely superb. Really impressive.
YES SKUNK GREAT THE LEAD SINGER MADE ME LOOK TWICE THOUGHT IT WAS FAGEN IN DISGUISE
I agree Villa boy.
If my eyes had been closed I would have had no reason to believe it was anyone but DF.
@@kennethshort2016 Totally agreed.
The vocalist here is Kipp Lennon, part of Venice the Band with his brother Pat and cousins Mike and Mark. They are featured in the video too.
I had no idea Kevin Sorbo had such a great voice!
Most people do not know this, years ago, Skunk wrote a letter and mailed it to a government intelligent agency. My middle bother was tasked with finding out how he knew the information he suggested in his letter. He was hired as a consultant and they are best friends to this day. Skunk is a certified genius.
This stage holds some of the finest musicians ever to get together and perform. They are tight and professional as any band I have had the pleasure of hearing. I tip my hat!!
Thats for sure that was shit hot 🔥
So many people don’t look past the front man or the most popular person on the stage and don’t realize the talent that standing on the stage with them.
Played with the Doobies and the Dan, and he’s a rocket scientist, no he really is...what a guy.
He and Michael McDonald.
Jeff skunk Baxter is also a missile systems expert.
No he's not. You need a PhD or at least a Masters to properly study aeronautics and defense. He has some connections and his neighbor taught him some things.
Baxter noticed some similarities in recording and radio frequency controls. He wrote it up for a neighbor, who submitted it to a panel at NASA. They said 'Why no name? Is this from the Skunk Works"? Well, you could say that.

The iconic guitar riffs came out of Skunk Baxter's brain - I became infected in 1974. Therapy is not necessary and even if available; not desirable - not only Skunk, but this masterpiece in general😍.
So glad I found this. The smiles on everyone's faces! Could watch and listen to this all day long.

Steely Dan came out just as the music was beginning to fade in the 70's. They brought a jazz rock thing that hooked me from the beginning. Love them!

What a joy to listen to Skunk. So smooth, effortless, beautiful!
He purposefully took a low key role, playing to perfection, but not dramatically,.
I can listen this every day. With this song I became a Kipp Lennon / Venice fan. Ofcourse I like Steely Dan.

In fifty years there will be no musicians left alive to play these great songs!
Try only 20 years
Unless there's a Renaissance led by the youth of that future generation who recognize the greatness of the music 100 years before their time and resurrect it. We enjoy the musical genius of bygone eras (e.g. Bach, Mozart, Bethoven), even performing some of it on period instruments. There's no reason to think that the same pattern won't repeat itself - human beings seem to be wired that way.
Skunks solo on the original record is One of my all time favourite guitar solos.
Agreed, love that he gave it to us here.
Frank Lennon Oh yes Skunk never stank out the place!😀He was great!
