Steely Dan, Pink Floyd, Queen, ZZ Top, The Eagles, Jethro Tull, Dr. Hook, Genesis, Supertramp, John Prine, Harry Chaplin, Elton John, Billy Joel, the list goes on. There will never be another era of music like the 70’s. NEVER! I feel truly blessed to be the perfect age back then to take it all in.
5:24 best of times 70's
You lost me at Genesis.
All those poor kids who think we're just sad old boomers will never get it. Ignorance is bliss, and they have no idea what they missed.
Quoon? Omg
boston
Yes, kids, back in the day, the musicians could play their instruments well.
THANK GOD I GREW UP IN THE 70'S BEST DECADE FOR MUSIC !
Amen, as am I. 👌
Damn straight!
Graduated in 76 there will never be another time like that
Herrington is a virtuoso, a pure master of the instrument. For him to not only play what GREAT guitarists before him played, he spices it up without losing the main points of the solos. An amazing musician.
Well, put! He has to cover Denny Dias, Jeff Baxter, and Larry Carlton! And he covers their stuff while keeping his own style!
No shit
Yeah I agree, but not a very nice guy in person. Met him when he played the Queen Theater in Delaware and he was kind of a dick!
@@timsullivan67I cut musicians a bit more slack than your average office workers. Genius often comes side by side with anxiety, depression and other fun things. I would hate to be so recognizable as to have to be obligated to be nice to everyone.
@@Creaulx when you wait on him all night, supply his rider in his green room, and escort him around the building, being nice to someone taking care of you is not much to ask!
It didn't matter what year, 1972, 1979, 2003, 2014...Donald Fagan ALWAYS had the tightest bands to express the genius of Steely Dan.
Yes !!!!
Best in any year or town 🎹
Absolutely😊
Steely Dan is way more than just music. Very difficult to explain
yep. somebody needed to say it. It was a time.
RIP Walter Becker 😢
This is proper music. Great rhythm, great beat, backup singers, a horn section, and a piano... doesn't get any better than this.
They collected some great musicians for their concerts...
Hell yeah
Leonid and friends do this song
I think I have listened to this song more than any song in my entire life. NEVER gets old
Me, too!!!🎉
Yup. Me, too🎉
In my very humble opinion, MOS is the GREATEST song of the rock era.....hands down, no dispute!!!!!
MOS is my favorite Steely Dan song.
instruments being played as instruments.......bravo
Steely Dan is the soundtrack of my life. I love this music !
Hats off to Jon Herrington! I once read the soloists were told to never cop the solo from the record. And their solos had to be different every night. Challenging to say the least!! RIP Walter and Cornelius
One reason I could never audition for this band 🤣🤣🤣
It was like the solo but not like the solo. I dug the differences to it.
There is a great interview out there somewhere with Larry Carlton about getting the call back 20 years after the recording fact to do a live gig with the Dan - he asked his friends and family should he do the solos like he did them now after 20 years of working on them or should he do it like he recorded them originaly? Apparently everyone looked at him like an idiot and he had to rely on John Harrington to get thru the gig! Now, I'm sure this was 90% the professional tip of the hat to Harrington who has the toughest seat in rock n roll but just the same! In this context you don't improvise very much outside the studio take at all! Lol! There's more than enough meat in the samwich as it is!
My hat's so off it's like I never had one.
Herrington is great..Just enough homage to the original solos with his own great playing and imagination
OMG. Carolyn Leonhart. Crushing majorly.
Perfect backup singer for Steely Dan: great intonation and energy in her voice, unforgettable beauty and a twinkle in her eye.
I have a crush on her too!
Jon Herington is a truly exceptional guitarist. His technical prowess, melodic sensibility, and soulful expression make him stand out among his peers. With remarkable versatility and a deep understanding of various genres, he consistently delivers captivating performances. Herington's guitar skills are a testament to his immense talent and dedication.
That mfer can play
It never ceases to amaze me how the crowd reacts to this song.
I could listen to this song a thousand times and never get tired of it.
The look on the audience's face is just pure happiness and fun
I was at that show, and for all of the Steely Dan gigs in those days, this was their encore tune.
And one of my theme songs for years.
Lucky Dog
Me too
Who can compare to these guys? Consummate musicians, great vocals and really cool lyrics that usually don't make a lot of sense. I LOVE STEELY DAN!!
Leonid and friends do a way better version.
absolutely. just like the original
@@genenie5981 how do they do it better? they just copy the original note for note
Both versions are great. The thing with Leonid's version is the sound quality. It was played in a recording studio so the sounds were more clear.
Listen again sir, it’s rushed! Guitarist isn’t even close to the same feel and expression . Backing vocals a little thin.etc….
It’s good but not this
The 1970s were a golden cornucopia of musical goodness
So many different sounds.
This song is definitely their signature song.
Nah
It sure is their signature song. all the best steely dan right there!!!
Great song but I'm not sure it's their signature song.
While this song is better imo reelin in the years is the only song that gets radio play
Ricky don't lose that number is my favorite
Greatest blues, jazzy rock music ever!!
Herrington’s tone’s was perfect. Very tasteful solos. Great rendition of this great tune.
That mfer can play !
I cannot express my love for this band ever enough 🎉❤
Quel groupe musical une merveille de musiciens et de paroles
No guitar player can ever recreate the genius, free-association, spontaneity and improv that Skunk Baxter brought to that song with his beautiful lead guitar work.
i agree!!!
Larry comes close here though
No one guitarist can recreate the incredible duet Skunk and Denny performed on this song. Even copying just one part takes a very gifted guitarist.
Uh....the Dan had several unbelievable guys over the years. Just look at Jon Herrington here in this vid. I like Baxter a lot. He's great, but......
Also, the tone of Skunk's Strat seems better suited to this song.
This pianist has got the stuff. Lifelong pianist, here.
We need more Dan, please.
Never heard the golden tones of the incomparable Walter Becker. May he R.I.P. !
Gets no better than these guys! Harrington is the absolute bomb!
Jon Herrington doing Skunk justice.
I’m crying now. A lot of life lived to steely Dan.
Herrington is one hell of a guitarist....fantastic touch and spot on pitch.
Watching Leonid & Friends perfect reproduction of this on UA-cam has given me a new appreciation of this song, which has led me here. André
How could you not dance to this ????
Jon Herrtington is amazing to see what he, s doing is greatI love this guy because he duplicates the other guy,s licks so well
Greatest musicians and Band of ALL time ! God Bless Walter Becker and Donald Fagan keep on with this legendary music .
See You when Steely Dan comes to the Windy City . Thanks for the Memories , thanks for the music , thanks for EVERYTHING !
You said it all❤
Some of the best and tightest musicians you are likely to ever hear
Jon Herington 5 scintillating solos on one classic.
They always had such great horns and sax in their songs. 😊
And everything else! Guitar.. the greatest!
The most fun song to see in concert. It's always their last encore and everybody jumps out of their seats and sings along.
How could you mot dance and clap to this song????
The song is embedded in my unconscious and it makes me happy cuz I took their advice and I've never been back to any of my old schools especially the ones that felt like jail.
What players & singers, holy shit ❤
song brings back the memories 👍✌
7 5 min of bliss 🎉
Their best song. Harmony and horns. Very cool.
You are such a 'gypsy queen'... thanks! Love the Dan... my life changed when we lost Walter... still weep today!
Me, too..😢
This would have been my dream gig as a vocalist--backgrounds for these guys ❤️ I never get tired of this tune
They are beyond words
I was at this show. My fave Steely Dan Detroit shows were '96 and '00, but this one might've been the best.
Mine was their original tour. Just outstanding.
One of my favorite songs . I've listened to it so may times but it never gets old.
Great music!!!
Easily my favorite Steely Dan song! As a kid the only part I could remember lyrically was ‘California, tumbles into the sea’
This is based on a real event... a drug bust at Bard College... many eons ago!
Just made my Saturday! Absolutely enjoyed this rare performance and that crowd was rocking!!
I appreciated the onscreen lyrics, cleared up some old confusions
God blessed us: Jon Herington on guitar.
Never saw this
One of those; ”wish I woulda been there That crowd looks SOOOO COOL”
kinda videos
And the band is so laid back
Wish I woulda been there😉
OMG. They are singing about me in my teen years!
The cruel part, yes?
My favourite song, thank you Steely Dan.
Pine Knob, seen many concerts there in the 70s, great venue, Great band!
Fine guitar work. Took an iconic piece and made it his own without losing the flavor of the original studio version.
A fabulous band, of course....
And: freaking Jon H. on guitar!!!!
W/ Walter!!!!! the most underrated player in the known universe.
This will either cause me to stop playing my guitars ( nah..) or to practice a lot more(that sounds more like it!)
There are two great live bands in the world, and this is one of them!!!!!
Who is the other? ;-)
So dang infectious and funky!
One of my fav tunes ever!
Just like the big man’s Clarence Clemons sax solo in Jungleland is probably the most recognized sax rift in rock and roll Harrington s guitar solo in this song is just as recognizable and epic.
Great venue to see a stellar production. Everybody showed up for the gig.
Yeah we was Jamin 🎸🎺🎸🎵🎶🎵🎵🎶🎹🎹🥁🥁🎷🎙️🎙️🎺🎤🎤🎵
The very best version of this song - John Herrington absolutely brilliant
OMG Jon Herrington is amazing!!
Brilliant stuff
32 likes? Comon, man this is great stuff.
Flawless!
Absolutely GREAT guitar work!
Great man
Love em! love em! love em!
Many happy memories from this song. Incredible band like no other. Thanks for posting!
20+ years since this was done, and it STILL carries the sound that lets you know who is doing it!
Guitar sounds flipping Amazing. And Donald and gang sound pretty damn good also
Hadn't seen this. Great performance and video. My dad liked them discovering them in his sixties/seventies. He was in WWII. Rare... Sheesh, they were amazing musicians. My God, that crowd is my age...
thank you very much
One of my all time favorite ❤ 💕 songs of the 70s.
Everybody on stage is fully engaged with everything they’ve got like an F-16 fighter in a dogfight!
All 💘...my old favorite group.....
Class.
Cornelius would run ads with Musician's Contact Service in LA, Sax Player $50 a night in between this sort of gig. Great player, great guy. Just loved to play!
After this, I hope tonight i have a High School dream!
Sleeping in a Time Machine!
spectacular
Steely Dan was and still is way too cool to be associated with ANY old high school. These guys didn't need schooling, the ARE the school, the school of cool LA R&R. Long live bros!
Top class
My favorite band ever!!!!!
This song was prescient; I grew up near Annandale, outside of Wash DC, left for Calif in the 1970s, have yet to return, even for a visit since
Great tune, love the horn licks. I think the original horn line used a bari Sax to give it a little extra kick. It’s all good!
The rhythm section... un-fucking real... Glad you appreciate it.
As a bari sax player who enjoys playing the part from this song, it is sadly missed. But a great performance nonetheless.
One of my favorite bands EVER!
Absolutely agree! Want it played at my funeral....(when the time comes!)❤
There isn't any other band that sounds like Steely Dan.
Isn’t that the way it’s supposed to be?
Love the backup ladies
Thank you for posting, just got here by accident because heard this great song on radio today... great footage of the incredible Ted Baker on piano, sadly he passed way too young a month ago 😢😢 RIP Ted! You are missed. And of course, as is Walter ❤
Jon Herrington , SMOOTH.
Old School Rock! Love it !
