  • A coworker recently had a little baby girl, and so I thought I'd make a rattle for her. Because it has to be hollowed out I knew I would at least be gluing up two halves, so I figured I'd go all-out and make the head of the rattle completely segmented. It's made of walnut and reclaimed oak floorboards.

That is the nicest rattle I've seen in ages. Beautifully turned and precise video. I'll have to give it a go for a new grand-daughter. Cheers from Paul, Salisbury East, South Australia.

Joe basementwoodworking I shaped it with the lathe using a technique I saw another woodturner use for making spheres (adding a link to the description).

Great video, thank you for sharing... Just curious, how did it sound with the bb's?
    Thanks again

The beads worked great -- not a very loud sound, so perfect for a baby.

Dan, why do you apply finish with the project off of the lathe? It appears to work fine, but on the lathe is so much quicker :)
Also, what finish do you use? It looks very thick!

On the lathe is much quicker, but I've usually got a couple projects going and don't like to tie up the lathe :-) I mostly use shellac at maybe a #2 cut.

hi dan... im new to woodturning, and wondering how you made and set up the sled on the saw to cut the angle you needed for making the segments?? hope ya can explain in easy terms..lol thank very much Dan

      Hi Rodney,
If you want to make a sled, I recommend a style called a "wedgie sled," (ua-cam.com/video/AdF7sKMKRR0/v-deo.html). I think it's the smartest design that's commonly used -- had I known about it when I made mine, I would have done that style.
That said, I have a video about the one that I made to use in this video: ua-cam.com/video/7tWw9TV_ju4/v-deo.html
