When I was in Carmel in 2016, I saw a new RS parked up. It was painted in grey but had Matt black roof and hood (bonnet) but the side sections of the roof, hood and grille were performance blue. It looked factory, but was that available in the States, or done by the owner, do you know? It had Orange County plates.
You need to understand how this Eu system will work. Ferrari can pool it self with someone who makes alot of clean cars. Like Fiat/Chrysler is a partner with Tesla so it gives more room for them.
When the Mk3 RS first came out I drove a number of miles from one dealership to another at 100mph. The car had trade plates on, still had the cellophane wrap on it and all the new car stickers. I wasn't meant to drive that fast, the car just sat at that speed with no hassle... easily one of the most exciting cars I've ever driven!

Acceleration from an electric car is absolutely stunning. 100% torque available from standstill. No gear change delays as only one forward gear. I love my RS and I love showing people Rory's Top Gear video. I just can't imagine an RS without a throaty motor and that's increasingly difficult these days
I live just outside Glasgow. In Glasgow there is a corner thats the most polluted street in Europe & its mainly due to the amount of buses that travel that road topped up by vehicles. Busses should not be exempt they still harm you all the same regardless of how many they seat.
I can't live without hearing the engine and the exhaust. It's what makes sports cars....sports cars. I don't care how fast refrigerators can do 0-60, they do not have tactile mechanical feel that merges the driver with the machine through sounds and feelings.
To be fair, if I saw a new generation of refrigerator with a 0-60 advertised it would certainly pique my interest. I'd probably get the fastest fridge going before I got an EV. 😄
Sad day if there are no future RS cars developed..but it was inevitable. I’m old school, and really wouldn’t be interested in an electric RS. Electric just isn’t what an RS is about.. I’ll be holding onto my Mk2 RS

dannyboyy31 I hate the EU for this. Especially as it targets the regular Joe who works hard and wants to treat himself. For example, I live in Belgium, both my wife and I love the Mustang. Rented some beauties via Turo in the US. Well spect GT’s even a GT350 once. Now here in Belgium I’m at the age where I can afford a car like that without hurting myself, but because of taxes we just can’t bring ourselves to buy one, here are the numbers: a nicely packaged GT is about 45000euro including VAT (purchase taxes). But then there is a registration tax of 10500euros and annual road tax of again approximately 2500euro. In other words we would pay the state 25% af the purchase price of the car, that is madness. And that is not calculating in the 21% tax already in the 45000euro sticker price. Add that together and your car is almost half taxes... Now why do I say it targets the average working man. Because the tax is based on engine displacement and CO2/km, placing the Mustang (with a V8) in the highest bracket. So a wealthy person buying a V12 Ferrari for 350000euro for example will pay the same amount of registration and road tax for a car 10 times the price.... doesn’t seem fair, does it?
Hi rory, one thing i always loved was the reviews like this you do. As with the pnes on top gear. The rs review you done was amazing and im glad you got to review these cars as it made me want one

Just as Subaru screwed us all over by not continuing with development of the STi Impreza and finally giving us the 400+ version with new looks.

One way around this is sell a focus RS that meets all the regs, once delivered to customer there are engine upgrades etc to get it where it would have been sold from factory. Just like a modular phone.

They didn't cut it just because of EU. If that was the only problem, they'd downgrade the engine a little bit. The problem is that almost nobody was buying it, and I imagine with a downgraded engine it'd be even less.
They always do the same thing. They need to say it because they don’t want to cannibalize the Focus ST. They always release the RS at the end of the life of the model.
Sad news indeed. Another reason why I am never getting rid of my hot hatch, a Honda Civic Type R. A high performance vehicle wrapped up in a practical hatch back design coupled with a 6 speed manual makes for some good driving fun. Makes me appreciate Hyundai even more for entering the hot hatch segment in these crazy times with their AMAZING Veloster N. That car is not to be dismissed. Job well done EU. I'm curious, do these standards also apply to China and if so, do they self regulate or will someone else come in to see they are actually meeting the their proclaimed targets?
SDFcommander Chinese manufacturers won’t have to meet these targets because they don’t sell any cars here. And until they stop making horrible pieces of shit that no one here wants to buy, that won’t change. There will come a time though, (when wages and living standards in China increase) that China will want the Eu to drop tariffs on imports, and the Eu will be able to insist that Chinese cars meet their emissions regs, even if they don’t sell here, in return. Of course, by then we might be all zipping about on fuel cell powered hoverboards.
Because it was unreliable, way more expensive than it's target audience affords? Hothatches nowadays became way to expensive for the 21-30 y/o people to afford.
Pretty sure they had to replace the engines on the entire first batch of focus RS's, and even since then they've had lots of other issues leading to warranty claims. Even without these emission requirements, the focus RS has been a problem child for ford. It performed great, but I'm pretty sure they were losing money on selling them.

Then there’s the one my mother used to have, Bluetooth and volume broke completely, was rusting from the inside out, corroded chrome and it always seemed to be needing work doing. Once we sat at the ford dealership and a lady popped in with her new car on a tow truck, 2012 at the time and her clutch went at 2,000 miles. Ford just wants to die, it seems. So do GM and whatever is still left of Chrysler. Build crappy vehicles that dont appeal and the customers stop buying. Who'd a thunk it? That mutant mustang is ugly as sin.
Ford, GM and Chrysler can survive just by selling trucks, suvs, and muscle cars in the largest market which is USA. Gas is cheap here, so small cars and sedans are just a waste since most crossovers, large, medium and small are priced about the same as their car counter part.
No they don't. Infact it's the opposite, Ford and GM have the sales data, and it turns out that people arn't buying them. The reality is that most car enthusiast are all saying they want this and that, but when the car makers finally make them, they arn't buying them.
@@Orcawhale1 Ford and GM are selling SUVs and Crossovers with some Pick Up Trucks, they're just not turning a very good profit. I honestly think this bubble will pop soon because there is just too many different trucks and SUVs out now. The ones who can't sell enough are going to lose money. Sometimes supply just out runs demand. And when gas gets more expensive again and the prices on said vehicles go up AGAIN this will be a problem.
What a stupid regulation. It should be based on the cars sold because that’s how much emissions are actually put out into the atmosphere and the performance cars would make up a negligible percentage of those emissions. It’s shit like this that makes me glad that Brexit happened.
Joel Bavidge But that is an impossible target to aim for. How can they develop engines and cars based on what model car, and how many, they are going to sell? They won’t know until they sell them, and that’s too late. And with or without Brexit, this still would’ve happened, because compared to the rest of the Eu we are a small market, and no one is going to develop something purely for us. That’ll apply to everything, not just cars.
Howling Mad Murdock well you can use sales forecast figures or limited production runs. For instance you know the Ford Fiesta is going to sell a hell of a lot more than a Ford GT. In general I hope we can use some more US spec products. Obviously this doesn’t apply to this example because they don’t get the Focus or Fiesta
“They still have 3 options, one of which is to partner with someone else to develop a new engine that delivers big power and low emissions.” A certain company springs to mind, begins with the letter C. They’re an English company and their name is strongly affiliated with coming after “Escort” and “Sierra.” You know who I mean :)
Also, interesting, that other brands can absolutely nail 4wd (Merc A45 I mean), without having to ditch any of their other models (with big V8s in them)
Ford have got rid of the focus RS because as much as people said they loved it nobody bought it in viable numbers to make it, nobody put their money where their mouth is....they bought Audi’s, AMG ‘s and bmw M.
the mk3 rs sold pretty good.... i dont think, that this is a reason. But they also want to keep it special and not as common as a gti and other cars. so the investment shouldnt be to high
I've owned the mk1 focus rs and to me that's still the best rs they made. It ticked all the boxes for me and it was limited numbers like an rs car should be not the mass produced mk2 and mk3 and then a bunch of special editions like the heritage bollox they can charge double for
Steve Wood the mk1 focus rs was always gonna have a hard time trying to fill the boots of the escort Cossie RS and the competition it had with the scoobys and lancer evo’s that reigned supreme at the time, that’s probably the only reason it wasn’t produced in large numbers, simple lack of demand and it couldn’t compete, regardless of the diff it was a 2wd car (front wheel drive) in a segment where 4wd reigned supreme.
The Mk3 RS actually sold really good. Ford built around 35k of them, even though they didn't plan to build as many, but the car sold well and they did it. In comparison to the Mk1 and Mk2 (both less than 10k built) that's a huge step forward. I think there's more behind this emission thing and they won't tell us, imo.
There's no way it sold poorly. The RS was sold in 8500 exemplars in 2016 + 2017 in the US alone. ~350 orders/month is absolutely not a bad number for such a niche car. If IntreLeX' 35k number is correct then that's a very healthy number of sales.

Sure, the details of that would be interesting.
You need to understand how this Eu system will work. Ferrari can pool it self with someone who makes alot of clean cars. Like Fiat/Chrysler is a partner with Tesla so it gives more room for them.
Of course; the EU elites will still want their Italian supercars.

Acceleration from an electric car is absolutely stunning. 100% torque available from standstill. No gear change delays as only one forward gear. dannyboyy31 I hate the EU for this.

Sad news indeed. Another reason why I am never getting rid of my hot hatch, a Honda Civic Type R.
The Fusion/Falcon isn’t going anywhere. What do you call it in the UK?
🤔 Will surely miss the RS
What about focus st’s though? They stopped producing focus st too?
Because it was unreliable, way more expensive than it's target audience affords? Hothatches nowadays became way to expensive for the 21-30 y/o people to afford.
Pretty sure they had to replace the engines on the entire first batch of focus RS's, and even since then they've had lots of other issues leading to warranty claims. Even without these emission requirements, the focus RS has been a problem child for ford. It performed great, but I'm pretty sure they were losing money on selling them.

2015 focus ST Diesel ? , when do I scrap it ?
“They still have 3 options, one of which is to partner with someone else to develop a new engine that delivers big power and low emissions.”
A certain company springs to mind, begins with the letter C. They’re an English company and their name is strongly affiliated with coming after “Escort” and “Sierra.” You know who I mean :)
Also, interesting, that other brands can absolutely nail 4wd (Merc A45 I mean), without having to ditch any of their other models (with big V8s in them)
Surprised they're still alive after all these years. If Ford does make another partnership, the result is bound to be bonkers.
Third option is what Paugeot did with e-208 GT. It will be the future in my opinion.
One day... One day I'll own one
This guy does an outstanding job. Well done Auto Trader 🚘God bless.

I'm usually a "Clarkson, Hammond or May- only" kind of dude. But this guy's quite watchable. Subbed. ✌️
Ford is going bust, they have to evolve with electric car technology or die, as crazy as it sounds. For me the last Focus Rs is a great car but a chav mobile.
P L - There’s not many chavs with a mk3 RS. Do you know any personally?
@@ewanhill677 not personally but I see chavs driving them quite regular where we live & car clubs I'm affiliated with, finance is easily obtainable these days.
There’s more of these on drug dealing estates than fast Audi’s now, anyone can get finance these days and the price of these second hand isn’t ridiculous
Darren Elliott look on autotrader at how many have been messed with
It's sad that such a significant car just does not have a place in the modern world. Same goes for a lot of other cool sporty cars.
Ford had a good time period when the RS came out. But 2019, 2020 they just screw up SO bad. Mustang Mach-E, all those ugly small SUV, no more sedans... Idk but if they don´t overthink their strategy i think they will not survive for long. Korean and japanese cars are way to good now that they can kinda cheap out on the cars and innovations....
@Rory , How do ( Ferrari , Lambo , RR , Bentley , etc ) they cope with the 95 gr/km limit ??? They just pay the fine after they sell the cars ???
I always laugh when I hear "metric horsepower" like there are metric and imperial horses running around out there.
They don’t run. They drive. -RR
@@AutoTraderTV Now I'm picturing a horse sitting on the cart instead of pulling it.
Yes please do a follow up video about the everyday cars that are at risk of the carbon emitions! I have bought a fiesta 2013 1l ecoboost to be exempt of the carbon tax and because of the diesel cars situation, I believed at the time (as I intent to keep this car for a number of years) that I went the right route.. Specially when considering that more cities will have the restrictions on diesel cars around the city centre etc
Iv been told ford going to make a fiesta RS and that was from a sales man at ford 🤞
Salesman should be politicians they talk so much shit
In my experience, salesman know sod all but like to make out they do. In other words, they talk a load of bollocks.
I have one 2016 , full mountune extras , you think will value? ty for the great video
