@@ConfusedOxygen noise and air pollution are bad things. So called "good" engine sound is a nuisance and a health problem for many people living near roads. Now it's on its way out and good riddance. Electric cars are a blessing.
@@supermutant01 electric cars are quiet, emissionless, friendly to drive, simple to maintain, energy efficient. In almost every way superior to internal combustion engine cars.
Another solution may be for manufacturers to make the engine bay louder. Use less sound deadening materials between the firewall and the interior + alloys/metals which vibrate more. Bring more sound into the interior without playing fake computer generated sound files.
Cars peaked around 2006 when manufacturers where putting in naturally aspirated V8 and race tuned V10s that probably make the best engine sounds ever but future is electronic and engine noises will probably come out of the car speakers.
If we could go back 100 years there would be those mourning the clip-clop sounds of horse hooves on cobblestones. In another 20 years internal combustion engines will be rare in common vehicles anyway.
The exhaust note is not really what I look for in a car, more the intake note from the engine sucking in air and working hard. Since the mass production of turbochargers that has long gone. And now they've taken the fun of modifying our cars awag altogether, maybe it's time to buy some old cars after the virus has gone. Stay home and stay safe people, and good luck to you Mr Reid :)
Intake sounds kind of died a long time ago though, the move to closed up airboxes pretty much killed it. That's why you see a bunch of 'performance' cars that have proper pod filters for the wooshes but that are locked up in a box, hell the Focus RS literally seals away the filter once you close the bonnet so it's quiet while you drive and you only get the wooshes when you've got it open. It's ridiculous
@@robertpryor7225 I'm guessing you're American since that seems to be where they called them Infinitis, they were Skylines here in NZ cause we just import all the JDM models. Did you guys get the v8 versions?
Actually, the sound is engineered nowadays and has been for about 25 years or more. Yes, if you tune for power you’ll have the basics or fundamentals but tuning the resonators on the air induction combined with the exhaust resonator placement and muffler contents is quite complicated. Then there is INTERNAL sound quality versus EXTERNAL sound quality. The transfer functions from Air Inlet and Tailpipe must be carefully engineered as is the structureborne energy from all of the engine and transmission mounts.
When I did military service, I had gas mask training. A gas mask is basically a particle filter and it inherently causes the same problem: it muffles sounds. Of course, in battle it's kinda advantageous to be able to clearly hear what your squad mates are saying, so modern gas masks have special membranes that allow sound to pass through, but not air. I don't see why car manufacturers don't just add membranes to their filters.

The problem is that when most of us car-heads were first driving, there were far fewer people, and consequently, fewer cars on the road. With the population growth and far more cars around, it's just too many cars pumping out noise; try living with all the cacophony out there on your front doorstep! Noise pollution regs had to come in, and that meant quieter cars, including now electric... Sad, but that's the cost of growth and "progress".
UK, terrible gun laws and now terrible car laws. Glad to live in a place where I can run long tube headers and a 100% straight-piped exhaust. No cats, no mufflers, no resonators. Just the way I like it.
“Somehow got away with”, they’re a small manufacturer (under 10k cars) and have lower restrictions. Also you can still engineer good engine notes. Filters themselves are not mandatory - if manufacturers can do the emissions without them that’s fine
I see this as both a blessing and a curse, since I feel like some cars are a little too loud, but this also affects cars that are a bit too quiet. One side wins the other side looses.

@@tanvirhussain6106 No, they are not flawed. Most of the people on Earth live in cities, where the big concentration of vehicles is a huge health issue. And I'm sorry, but if I have to choose between asthma and my car sounding a little worse, I'll gladly choose the latter. I drive an A35 AMG, btw.
This is the thing, it makes no economical sense for the manufacturers to develop different versions of the same car for different markets, at least in the noise-making department. As a result, the cars are getting quieter globally.
To keep the original noise, how about installing two pipes after the headers. One flows through the PPF, the other bypasses the PPF and rejoins the tail pipe down stream. The second pipe would have a flexible diaphragm that would not allow gases to flow through that pipe, but importantly allow the noise to continue through. Best of both worlds.

The loud roaring sounds of these cars from Mercedes-Benz, Audi and BMW among many other car brands, gave these cars a soul and it was one of the primary reasons for buying these expensive cars. Might as well consider buying cheaper brands now, as those will sound the same, still offer decent looks in the modern era and likely be more fuel efficient. This is very disappointing news. I’ve never understood why bangs, or farts, from the exhaust are supposed to be desirable. The number of cretins driving up my road with some awful noise out the back (usually Fiestas but also an M140i) just makes you want to slap them in the face. Save noise for the circuit and rally stages (historic cars with ITBs is all I’d ever miss if that came to an end)

There's a difference between pops & bangs coming out of a McLaren and pops & bangs coming out of a trashcan on wheels lol.

yes exactly what I said! people are buying older any way
The exhaust note is not really what I look for in a car, more the intake note from the engine sucking in air and working hard. Since the mass production of turbochargers that has long gone. And now they've taken the fun of modifying our cars awag altogether, maybe it's time to buy some old cars after the virus has gone. Stay home and stay safe people, and good luck to you Mr Reid :)
Agreed. Thank you for your comment.
@@helplmchoking New turbo cars (at least in UA-cam videos) seem to sound kind of like a Naturally aspirated engine's intake sound now
Actually, the sound is engineered nowadays and has been for about 25 years or more.
Of what material are modern masks? Is it capable to sustain extreme heat?

The problem is that when most of us car-heads were first driving, there were far fewer people, and consequently, fewer cars on the road. With the population growth and far more cars around, it's just too many cars pumping out noise; try living with all the cacophony out there on your front doorstep! Noise pollution regs had to come in, and that meant quieter cars, including now electric... Sad, but that's the cost of growth and "progress".

This is a genuinely sad video, I remember dreaming of having a car like E63 AMG from 2013 just for its sound... and it's just gonna get worse from now
To keep the original noise, how about installing two pipes after the headers.

People should force this new law to change through their purchasing decisions like buy more Japanese or American car brands so Europe can perhaps scale back on this new legislation.
Why shouldn't Mercedes, Audi, BMW, Lamborghini, Ferrari, Jaguar, Porsche, Koenigsegg, Bugatti, Lexus, Mustang, Cadillac, Infinity, Corvette, Bently, Alfo Remeo, Dodge, Rolls Royce, McLaren. Tens if not hundreds of thousands of high paying jobs should be destroyed so Ford, Toyota, Kia, Honda, Chevy, Nissan, Subaru, Jeep, have even less competition, for example a brand new honda piolet fully speced out will cost $55,000 you can get a BMW x4 fully optioned out for 58 thousand dollars brand new not to mention nearly all of these "fordable cars brands" own a performance car brand, a luxury car brand or a mix of both, not to mention sound doesn't hurt the environment pollution does, why help these monopolies? Why have less options? Why would you want everyone to have the same car? Please get educated about this topic before you regulate our hobby
