The beauty of The Office is that in scenes like this it manages to make us feel sorry for Brent and somewhat hate Neil for firing him. Although Brent really does deserve to be sacked and Neil was just doing his job.
But the difference between the characters is that Brent is so insecure and vulnerable that it makes him pitiful and sad, no matter how much of an arse he can be. Whereas Neil is confident in himself and shows no vulnerability, which makes us see him as a bully to Brent because we know that Brent probably had very few friends at school, whereas Neil probably had many. The Office is such a masterpiece.

His job is all he has. He has no family, no friends, no real skills or education to speak of. The cognitive dissonance finally subsides, and he realizes he's not going to be this great entertainer. Yes the American version tried to capture that essence of drudgery and peoples individual quirks and egos but it’s an English show and nothing quite captures that bored working class versus middle management vibe in the office quite like the original. It did more than make people laugh. It touched people. I just didn’t get that feeling off the American one but felt like it tried hard to. What I love most about the office is the fact that they don’t let a low budget ruin it. The beauty is in the script.

Neil is not a bad guy, until the very end of the series, when he's shown to be quite nasty and vindictive towards David. But he's good at his job. He's talented, personable, successful. I've met many like him in the workplace. And I've always hated them. Perhaps because they take it so seriously. Never question anything, ever. Just accept all the corporate bullshit, swallow it whole, never thinking for themselves. Whereas Brent is a real character, breaks the mould, a genuine oddball. I don't go to work to mess around and have fun, I go there to work hard, do my best, and get things done for the company, and Neil is clearly all about facilitating that. What's really clever about this is that Neil is actually always pretty nice to David. They whole time Neil was in the show he was nothing but friendly to everyone, he was extremely fair at dealing with David and was actually a great boss. But because we sympathise with David you kind of resent him. He's everything David wants to be. Can you imagine the reality of having to work with David? Most people would have been much nastier to David because he deserves it really.

Never understood the hatred towards Neil. Keep in mind that he only becomes nasty to David AFTER the ‘documentary’ is released, which is when he would have seen how bad David was behind his back: especially the scene where he tells Tim and Gareth that Neil was slagging them off.
Nothing Neil did to David was anywhere near as bad as what David did to him, with all the constant insulting and insecurity.
People who think David is a ‘good guy’ seem to forget how he acts towards others when he’s on a high: i.e constantly talking about himself and treating them poorly
(Edit) AND the fact that David was perfectly willing to sell out and get his entire team made redundant for the promotion that he failed to secure

This is a difficult scene to watch. I certainly couldn't laugh at any of it - I have been made redundant five times.
