  • G'day, guys! In today's video, I have the pleasure of discovering root rot in my Philodendron Florida Beauty. So, we treat the root rot and then propagate the Florida Beauty, which I had air layered previously.

    My daughter (7) went crazy when she saw yours, she started singing Twinkle Twinkle with her. Molly says hi! Your Florida Beauty is just gorgeous, I'm afraid mine may be trying to revert. I'm going to wait for its newest leaf then maybe cut it and try again.

    I think the Florida Beauty got upstaged a bit LOL it's fun when they're little and interested in what you're doing and want to be involved. Then one day they're teenagers and you're much to embarrassing to hang out with. I mean they have a point I'm a dag but they used to enjoy that. 🤨 So inspired to try air layering as you've done here!! I may play with it on my subhastatum just to see how it goes. She's a beautiful plant though Pete curled leaves and all she's stunning.

    Another great video. For me anytime I disturb the root, changing media etc I use Liquid CCS or Maxicrop plant starter + seasol. I somehow had issues before with powerfeed pro hydroponic turning cloudy. Foliage focus is much better imo

      Great advice, Tommy. I'll have to give that a whirl. Also, tried GT in the past and loved it, however, not sure if it's already set up for hydro (?). The current fert system I use is for everything hydro or not, which makes life easy as.

      @@petevsplants7516 I use these mix to rehab plants including those from quarantine treatment and its been great. Also using some Great White mycorrhizae too. Yea I use GT for everything from coco to hydro without issue. Once finished I might try FloraMax as they require minimal to no pH adjustment from what I read

    • @petevsplants7516
      @petevsplants7516  Рік тому

      Awesome, will have to try it out with hydro then. Do you mix in anything else to balance it out or is it already hydro balanced?

      @@petevsplants7516 Nah just water and GT most of the time. My tap pH is 8 or 6 from RO; whichever I have available on watering day haha I only troubleshoot when I noticed any issue really.

    I knew you were going to have a lot of rot, when I saw your other vid on this plant. BUT, I didn't see it until after this vid was made. First, NO! There was no bottom rot in the last vid. So it was not the reason for the curling leafs. The mistakes you made were to use the same container that had rot in it previously. Then you filled the water WAY TOO HIGH, and put your roots way too low. ALWAYS put the water level below your roots after a repot. Make the roots grow to the waterline. Second, you didn't actually treat the rot. You just put it in there, and didn't remove all the moss. NEVER put a plant into hydro with moss left on the roots. You have to clean them pristinely.
    Then around the 15 minute mark, you use the SAME container again. You should have boiled and sanitized that container, or used another one...

    Hey Pete
    One thing that could help you with the root rot .
    If u setup a semi hydro System wet / soak the Balls but DO NOT fill in a nutrient solution.
    Wait like 1 to 2 weeks before adding a solution but keep the Balls lightly wet .
    And the solution should only Cover 1/3 to 1/4 of the root Ball.
    If the plant wilts add a bit more solution until it perks up .
    Learn to read your specific plants and you will immediately see if the amount and height of the solution is right .
    Matt

    Little Joey is adorable, and your such a good dad 😉
    Watch a guy called Wesley and recons that you are not supposed to take no more than a third of the roots when your root pruning, think that’s what he said 🤔 if it’s root rot ya must obviously have to take them off. Oh dunno I’m a new plant parent, what do I know 😂

    • @petevsplants7516

    You just created the same situation you tried to prevent. These plants rot if kept wet, like this. Soil is what it needs, those clay balls offer no nutrition or nutrients. Soil is the best medium.

  • @andreiflavius122
    @andreiflavius122 Рік тому +3

    Not the best idea to let that moss in the spoil, it will stay wet all the time and the plant can rot. Please make sure to remove it as fast as you can...

    • @Boywithplants
      @Boywithplants Рік тому +1

      Hes goog haha he lets his soil dry out

    • @Boywithplants

      I make aroid soil mixes myself that partially contains sphagnum moss sometimes

    • @joannanovara815
      @joannanovara815 Рік тому +2

      @Boywithplants a little mixed into the soil can be okay, but directly stuck on most of roots can be detrimental(especially if grown semi hydro since it stays pretty moist). Some plants can tolerate better than others of course.
