Thank you, Steven. 1916 is an absolute gem. What a great record. I was fortunate to be a DJ on college radio at the time, so I got to promote that record when it was released. So friggin great!

Agree mate, these days I'm a massive Motorhead fan, but I wasn't in the 90s. I always loved 1916 album though, it's a great listen 👍

I don't really have any favourite Motorhead albums. I have favourite songs off each album. It's rare that any album didn't have at least a couple of outstanding tracks. Thus, apart from the headline tracks, I love Iron Horse,, Capricorn, Metropolis, Sweet Revenge, Poison, Dancing On Your Grave, I Got Mine, Choking On Your Screams.
However, there is no bad Motorhead. I'm also glad I met Lemmy when he was with Hawkwind and we had a drink together. The most intriguing question of all is "what could Hawkwind have become if Lemmy had stayed and become a major songwriter for the band?"

I love “1916”, I was working in a record/cd shop when that album came out and we got promo CD’s of it and I played it to death, it was very different as Motörhead albums go and it really was a great idea to do that. I’m glad Steven chose that one as it doesn’t get the love it deserves.

@@PerfectMask1 Im not a metalhead at all, but I’ve always liked Motörhead, I don’t really see Thomas metal, they are more punk or hard rock to me and their relationship with one of my favorite bands, The Damned always drew me to them.

Off topic but i just wanted to thank both Steven and Pete for their wonderful video ranking the Riverside albums some time back. Being of a certain 'vintage' my last musical epiphany was back in '93 when i first heard the Ozric Tentacles. Since then i have discovered newer bands but, to be honest, not with the enthusiasm of past years. However the enthusiasm and description given of this band's music made me want to tip my toe in the water. Since then i have barely had a day pass without playing this band's amazing material. Also this has rekindled my love of music in general and as such i owe you both a debt. Thank you so much (although my bank manager is less enthused)! BTW loved this video and Sacrifice is for me my favourite Motorhead album for what it's worth.

The pleasure is mine (and Pete's no doubt) Baz. Delighted that you enjoyed the Riverside show, and then their music and that in turn then opened the door to more excellent new music. It's great fun doing all of these shows but reading responses like this makes it even more worthwhile. Thank you!

It's quite impressive about how Motorhead's catalog is so consistently great for a band that has such a large catalog. They may have a few albums that are on the weaker end, but they never really shit the bed either. The fact that even their weakest albums still have some stone cold bangers makes Motorhead one of the top tier heavy rock/metal bands of all time.

I agree there are three eras but I break them down differently
    1st Trio era
    Quartet era
    2nd Trio era
I love the first 2 eras and like the 3rd. I think Wurzel was a riff guy who understood what made a great Motörhead riff. It had to have some of that Rock and Roll swing. Phil & Mikkey wrote good songs but the swing disappeared as they took over writing the music. And Mikkey is technically brilliant but he's too good. There was no danger of it going off the rails because the guy is so locked in. Motörhead needs some danger.
That said here are mine from the three eras as I defined:
    Favorites:
    Another Perfect Day
    1916
    Motorizer
    Least Favorites:
    Iron Fist
    March Or Die
    We Are Motörhead
    Wild Cards:
    '79 Box Set
    No Sleep At All
The Lost Tapes vol 2 - Norwich 1998
My all-time favorite Motörhead album is No Sleep 'til Hammersmith. Nothing beats it. They were ferocious and they played Rock and Roll.

Nice video. always enjoy these. Just popped to my mind, as you guys said something about the Motörhead merch... Me and my wife were on a train here in Finland, and we we're at the restautant. So, the one and only absolute rock n' roll legend Michael Monroe appears there, and as you do here in Finland, nobody disturbs him or anything, but Michael turns to us and compliments my t-shirt, which happens to be a Ginger Wildheart-shirt, a merch from a Michaels own bandmate (at the time). My Ginger shirt was a ''balck metal-style'' design with, Ginger's face on a ''corpsepaint'' and ''Ginger'' written with ''Black metal-style''. Ofcourse I thanked Michael for his kind words and at the same time I noticed that my wife was wearing a classic Morörhead t-shirt, and realised right away that MIchael propably had no idea about the Ginger/his own bandmate-shirt I was wearing, but was complimenting my wifes Motörhead shirt :D

Pete's comments on Bad Magic makes me need to revisit. When I reviewed it at the time, “The Devil” and “Choking On Your Screams” were standouts, but his weakened vocals did concern me about his health. As it should have. Snaggletooth related rock and roll story. A story so embarrassing Steven should be able to see the glow from my red face a few (in US terms) miles away in Perth.
So there was a rumour here in Edinburgh and my part of Fife (or maybe just folk taking the pish out of yours truly), that Joe Petango (artist creator of Snaggletooth) was actually a pseudonym for non other than Pete Agnew, bass player with Nazareth.
In the early 80s I had the pleasure of chatting to Pete and asked him if this was true. Pete, to his credit as a rock and roll gentleman and scholar said... of course it was true, he'd always done artwork but music took precedence etc etc and that not a lot of people knew he was the artist.
(One for hardcore Nazareth fans here) To think he said you can't trust an excited Texan...
    I still think he's a painter. 😉

Great video gents, hope you're all well! This was really hard, it reminded me of when we did Saxon, there's just no crap!
    Here goes...
Top two: Overnight Sensation, this where I got into Motorhead, still love it,
and Overkill, just blew my tiny mind first time I heard it!
Least favourites: Snake Bite Love, great just not as good the the albums either side,
and Iron fist just not as good as what when before. Both are great though.
Wildcard: The St. Valentine's day Massacre EP with Girlschool, absolutely fantastic! Also, maybe controversial, Under Cover, most covers albums are beyond terrible but i really like this one!

    1. Overkill
    2. Ace of Spades
    3. Inferno (this is also my underrated pick too)
    Least Favourite:
    1. Snake Bite Love
    2. March or Die
All other Motorhead albums are fantastic, they really didn't release any horrific albums... maybe some dull ones, but not terrible.

My introduction to Motorhead was from "No Remorse" in the early '80s. It just blew me away, from the band name, album cover, and of course featuring all their classic songs, including future classic "Killed by Death." The SOT crew, as usual, did a great job presenting and commenting on the band's catalog and long history. So I have nothing new or profound to add. Instead I'll basically agree with the rationale behind their faves and least faves. In terms of longevity, durability, consistency, loyalty (to the fanbase), no one could match this band. It was remarkable how they could crank out one album after another well into their later years when many of their peers struggled to produce something three to five years out.
My faves: Overkill, Bomber, Another Perfect Day, Orgasmatron, Sacrifice, Inferno, Aftershock... least faves: Motorhead (1st album), 1916, March or Die, Overnight Sensation. As the guys said, no actual bad albums in their catalog. First album, to me, was similar to those of Saxon and Accept--new band still getting their wings. But they all found themselves pretty quickly and off they went. Pete unwittingly named the next Motorhead album, "Balls and Grime." LOL, brilliant! If only...

    Top 2

    2 Overkill its just mega
    Bottom 2 no particular order
    1 Sacrifice
    2 Overnight Sensation
    Both Good but not great
Wild card I'm going to to cheat as these 3 are killers

The one thing you can say about Motorhead is that they never went down the reggae route.

I always thought Eat The Rich, Rock n Roll, Dogs and Stone Deaf in the USA were great tracks, the others on the album okay. However, with the expanded release of Rock n Roll containing Just Cos You Got The Power and (my favourite) Cradle to the Grave you got a banging album right there! Also, as stated, 1916 is an absolute gem of an album.

I have an usual Motörhead torrid tale of woe to tell:
Back in 1991, l was a twenty-something year old lad working at a record store on Long Island, New York. I was dating a very pretty, raven-tressed, metal chick who always dressed in black. Back then, a cool record label cat got me two free tickets to see a concert in New Jersey called Operation Rock and Roll. The bill was: Metal Church, Dangerous Toys, Motörhead, Alice Cooper, and Judas Priest then headlining. All five bands, at the time, were signed to one of a myriad labels under the Sony Music umbrella. This was right before Metallica released The Black Album, in August 1991. I remember playing an advance promo cassette of that album, in my car on the way to the show, from Long Island to New Jersey. Due to a rainstorm, we arrived at the show very late, at the end of Motörhead’s set. The only song we saw Lemmy and the boys perform was their set closer, “Ace of Spades.”
My friend at Sony Music was only able to get me one backstage pass for the show. So, sometime after Motörhead’s performance, l left my then girlfriend alone, and l went backstage to meet some rockstars. I met Alice Cooper who was a very friendly fellow; same for the men in Judas Priest. I saw Lemmy sitting with a bunch of dudes and also some of the the Amazonian women from the Cycle Sluts from Hell. (Anyone remember them?!) l approached Lemmy to sign my 1916 CD booklet, l had kept dry in an inner pocket of my denim jacket. I said to him, “Hey Lemmy, can you please sign my 1916 album?” He retorted back, “Sure mate,” without looking up. I then FOOLISHLY began to make small talk as he scribbled his signature. “‘Ace of Spades’ was sure great tonight,” l said. He then looked up at me and said, out loud for everyone to hear, “Ace of Spades?! Get fuckin’ current, mate!! That song is thirty years old!!” Everyone around him cracked up, as l slunk off, mortified and embarrassed. Of course, at the time, the song was only eleven years old, not thirty; but l wasn’t about to get into an argument with Mr. Kilmister about it. I was just being honest about what l saw, without giving him the long story of how l got to the show late due to the poor weather conditions outside the indoor venue.
Keep up the sterling work, you groovy group of guys.
Cheers from Noo Yawk, ova heyah.
    Rock Out & Prog On!
It’s simply Rock ‘n’ Roll, in any lexicon!

Favourites (in order 1-5): Inferno, Ace of Spades, Bastards, Overkill, Aftershock.
Least favourite: Motorhead, March or Die.
Under-rated: Overnight Sensation, Rock 'n Roll.
I enjoy all Motorhead albums, but someone has to be on the bottom when it comes to making any list.

  • @tjsststsjsjyksjgksjysjs7633

Being a huge fan of the classic Motorhead line-up it's very easy for me to name my top three records: Ace of Spades, Bomber, Overkill. Instant classic, you can't go wrong with any of them. I also like Iron Fist despite its obvious lack of inspiration. Orgasmatron closes my top five, it's a great heavy metal record, I just wish it had been produced properly. That said I kinda lost interest in Motorhead's music after 86, I've never even listened to any of their later 80's records and don't really care about the 90's stuff. It's not bad, I just find it boring and repetitive. So my least favourite albums are definitely from that era: Sacrifice, Overnight Sensation, Snake Bite Love. The wild card goes to Another Perfect Day which is a solid record, I just think it wasn't a right decision to bring Bryan Robertson into the band, he didn't fit well with their music style.
