Let's not forget about Kevin Chalfant who filled in for Steve Perry for a while in 1993. He is from Streator Illinois 30 minutes from me! He still has his pipes and still can sing all the old Journey tunes! He opened for guys like Peter Frampton. He also sang for The Storm band (with Steve Smith on drums) for years with a main hit "Karate Tiger" or "Hold On to the Vision" which was a movie title track fo Blood Dragon. He also did work with Bryan Adams, Neal Schon and others! In 2003 he toured as the lead singer of The Alan Parsons Live Project. He also produced many solo albums. Some pretty impressive stuff! Arnel is a formidable vocalist, no doubt whatsoever. But there is a magic that is unparalleled about the tone of Perry's voice that sounds the way a summer breeze feels. And, there are innately unique inflections in his delivery that are not mechanical or rigid. They are, in fact, purely organic and fluid like a comforting spoonful of warm honey. They are qualities in his voice that cannot be taught or learned. They are an intrinsic part of Steve's vocal physiology and simply irreplicable.

There is only "one" ☝️ Steve Perry!! But I feel bad about the negative rap that Arnel gets from many people. It's clear that Augeri and Soto struggle on the high notes that Arnel hits with ease. To many of his critics, it's hard to accept the fact that although appearance doesn't match the sound that comes out of his mouth - he is still the best journey vocalist after Steve. Many would prefer to pretend to be tone deaf. They'd prefer to see a struggling average white vocalist than to accept a pitch perfect sound coming out of a little asian singer...

Arnel can't sing "Still They Ride" or "Mother, Father". He is missing the high, melodic register to truly carry most of the songs. He goes "husky" a lot. By that, it means he opens his throat and drops the register and tonal quality. He's good, no doubt; just not quite enough to truly replace SP.

Check out a LIVE outdoor concert from him and his band (Journey Experience) in Belgium! on youtube type in Kevin Chalfant and a few vids down is his outdoor concert! (His keyboard player is my friend!)

Always Steve Perry. Grew up watching the videos on MTV, movies with their music on the soundtrack ( love Vision Quest), listening on the radio, buying their records and tapes and posters. Unless you lived in that time, you probably won't understand.

There is only one Steve Perry, and these will always be HIS songs. While the other guys did a voice copy, no-one can ever do that successfully. Steve Perry's voice and stage presence are something he brought to Journey, and unfortunately for Journey and their fans, he took everything he brought to the band with him when he left. Thankfully we still have access to the original singer and his incredible talent on their early albums. That music is just as amazing to listen to today.

@@vraylesabile5212 WTF is it with the race card? Just because people like the original singer more than the current one, doesn't make them racist. There was nothing racist said about AP. You people jump to retarded conclusions when you hear something you don't like or agree with. And yes SP is better then AP. There is a reason why SP is called "The Voice". Take your race card and shove it back in your wallet.. Or better yet just destroy it. Life would be much better for everyone.

Mr. Perry will always have the edge for three reasons.
    1. He wrote them. They were designed for his voice so it’s a perfect marriage between voice and content.
    2. Nostalgia. You can’t escape his shadow and you hear his voice still everyday on the radio compared with the others.
    3. He was simply the best.

Steve P helped write a bunch of the best Journey songs. That says alot. So he should feel them the most. The ones we all say we love the best. Only The Young, Ask The Lonely and all the great songs from Escape(love the song), Frontiers, Raised On Radio, ETC.
I found Journey in 1980 in high school. Because he co wrote the material, Steve P = Journey 4 m3!!!
