Does This 500BHP Revo Mapped Audi TTRS Really Make The R8 Redundant? (Review And Drive)

  • Whenever you talk about the Audi R8, discussion of the TT is soon to follow. Everyone knows the TTRS is quicker than the old V8 R8, and here in 500bhp guise the little pocket rocket is nearly as quick as the modern V10s too - but is it really as special to drive, or merely a hollow imitation?

    I bought a TT, now well into my 40’s. After a life on superbikes, you just have to appreciate the sense of safety an Audi has. They are so planted and handle like a dream. Stops on demand and that Quattro will go around corners like you wouldn’t expect it. Some of the safest cars around, if you’re my age coming home late from work, they’ll take care of you. Audi’s really are amazing cars.

    Congratulations on the half-century, James - richly deserved.
    Biggest problem I have with the R8 is that they made it look the same as the TT (mk 1 R8 was much better in that regard). Nothing to do with the various tired cliches about TTs, just the disappoinment if you owned an R8 at how similar they look.

    • @Tracertme

      The problem the R8 owner had was it looks like a big TT but it drives very differently.......the R8 is the best supercar ever made....you can keep your Italian jobs....You don't buy an R8 to impress people, you buy it to drive and please yourself... Franco Banzini I need to drive a larger engined turbo engine to see how it feels. It’s a Giulietta 1.35l turbo I’ve been driving recently, it develops a lot of torque in one big lump around 3k after turbo spool, but it’s so short lived and just spins the front wheels. Yet it doesn’t make enough low down power to set off in 2nd gear, and becomes breathless at about 5k. I hate it so much, I’ve driven NA cars with a worse power to weight ratio that feel much faster because of the broader power band and response.
      I’m looking at old BMWs to replace it and fancy an N52 NA 3.0, I wonder if the twin turbo N54 is still smooth to drive unlike my Giulietta, if it still has a big progressive power band I’d consider that. The 1st gear pull in the Giulietta is honestly stupid, it’s so unbelievably badly setup.

Every TTRS driver you see would prefer to be in your car by a country mile. I can see why this presenter is taking this line of sucking up to TT owners and people who aspire to this car. There are loads more people in this demographic than those who would be in the market for an R8 so makes sense for views.

      I own a TTRS. And yes, if I could afford a new R8, I would rather have one. But for a DD, the TTRS is very nice.

    I'd much rather buy a first gen r8 for the money. Much better looking and a bonefide supercar. Proper occasion everytime. This is just a bit marmite for me... Not my cuppa.

      Do love the first gen R8. Surprised I've seen them for around £35k for the V8. Only thing is though several cars have become faster than it over the years. The audi S8 for example and this TTRS. Its a tricky choice.

      And 10 times more expensive to maintain a year. Loved having an R8 for many years, but getting in this everyday makes me just as happy

    if you just think of going once to the track with your car youll pick the R8. Stories about the brakes do not inspire confidence

      Personal experience or internet lore? I have no experience of the R8 personally so just curious.

    • @leokal457
      @leokal457 4 роки тому

      @ me neither but if you look track tests for ttrs up its pretty scary! In one test the brakes didnt even last 2 Nürburgring laps. And it wasnt that just the paddle got long it went completely to the floor! The TT is a very nice car ( i drive one myself) but its more of a lowered golf than a real sportscar (at least in my opinion). Thats totally fine if you searching for a car that is perfect for everyday driving and can haul a serious amount of stuff for such a car. But with the brakes it has at the moment and had in previous TTs in my opinion it is not a true drivers car.

    • @machidaman

      Or you save pennies and upgrade the brakes.

    • @leokal457
      @leokal457 4 роки тому

      @@machidaman thats really not that easy because it seems the problem is not that the brakes themselves are bad but that the cooling is nonexisting. So you need to channel air onto the brakes and for that you need to cut bodywork. If you plan on keeping your car forever its not a big deal but if you want to sell it, many people are not going to like this

      Had a Supercharged Mk1 MX5 and it was a riot - absolutely agree it was more fun than the TTRS but as an every day car not so much - and nowhere near as quick and I barely got above 25mpg
