Mike's one of the best human beings out there. He's down to Earth. He connects with people. This is really neat to see and hear. The mechanics of motion is what he is talking about. Wonderful insight here in spades.
Greatest teacher ever...Seriously he was born to teach and he was born to play, one of the all time greats...I hope he goes back to Berklee if that is what he wants....
That's an awesome video. I did the WFD in 2011 and won. The drumometer took my technique and speed to new levels, and I took a lot from Mike Mangini. I got to meet Mike in 2015 and we had a good talk about this. Guys, Boo McAfee still has Drumometers, get one! Trust me. I'll improve your timing and precision
"Speed is a result of motion in time" This young chap seems to know all about distance over time, I wonder if he will end up using this concept in his career some day
He just explained exactly how to drum really very fast. That palm down method, (which he then shows raised a bit) Is how to engage and train your fast twitch muscles in you wrist. So instead of using your larger (slower) muscles, you use your faster muscles. Or at least everything in combination. I completely missed it the first time I watched this video.
This is a perfect example of the fastest musician not being what the gig needs. He is amazing but so is Portnoy - 2 very different approaches. I’ve been in positions where I had to try out musicians and 9/10 times it wasn’t the fastest drummer or shredder that I ended up going with. It’s all about fitting in with the rest of the guys (musically and chemistry wise), and serving the music… unless you’re doing speed metal, there are not too many opportunities to use that sort of speed in a musical context.
@@simonezangari1306 I don’t disagree that he can do that-unfortunately, DT didn’t use him in that way. But Mangini will be fine. He can focus on the stuff he wants to that DT didn’t want to use.
Well said about death metal. It is art and music as it is speed. Whacha callit in English, Blastbeat?🎶 kotkotkotkotkotkotkot Oh Im 2 minutes in so gonna watch the whole video now. Thank bro and keep the wrists loose :D Oh and these guys who teach, and in Berklee the holy site of music schools. it's same like in martial arts, they say when you teach, you learn yourself so much more. You know what I mean.
The one thing no one is mentioning here is how right he is about the death metal bands. Music is fantastic, the lyrics are horrid. Luckily there are some bands that aren’t like that out there.
Now I realize I m playing with hands not with sticks .on the pad electronic and I find out that I made the best loop dance and liked from other people because it s easy relax fast and infact I realize too that they hired me years ago as percussionist
And because of the triggering, you get a sound that is derivative and that has no uniqueness to it across the different death metal bands.Whereas when I was younger and when thrash/death/speed metal was way new, you knew Gene Hogan, Dave Lombardo, Glen Evans, Charlie Benante, etc.....
Nice of him to try to help us mortals.
Aaaw.... Brilliant comment! 😉👍🇮🇪

@hugorezende199 Yeah, i think the guy was making a joke, since it's blatantly obvious this is a 20 yo recording.

He has what it takes to be a great teacher as well as a great drummer. Thanks Mike

I’m lucky enough to have a Pearl snare that Mike demoed in Toronto many years ago. What a great guy.
NAMM show back in the day. I can't imagine what it was like then.
He is so badass... It's almost unexplainable
For his degree, Darren Cesca (drummer on latest DEEDS OF FLESH album ‘Nucleus’) was mentored by Mike at Berklee College of Music.
Such a friendly personality 👍🏼
Great professor!!! Phenomenal Drummer!

Accent one note out of a 13-tuplet? I can’t even imagine the amount of training and discipline it takes to be able to do that.

Good Fellas Drumming technique
His charisma is off the charts and he oddly gives Ace Ventura vibes.
What was the year of this video? He’s seems like a fun and thoughtful man.
I’d say early 2000s. 02-04!
