Social media platforms are designed to make the user addicted and keep them on their platforms for as long as possible. So to blame the individual users is quite problematic I’d say. The tech companies should be held responsible as the individual user very rarely can withstand the subtle mechanisms that keep you on the app. Instead of blaming individuals we should blame the system that makes tech companies implement those addicting features, which is capitalism.

Tech and social media isn't a problem but the lack of boundaries around it cause problems. Prior to the smartphone social media had an off button, the only thing that was always on was the watch, mp3 with limited storage or even a mobile phone, which was still quite new. We have never had 24/7 access to as much media as now I think the lack of boundaries between things as the computer can multitask paired with always having a smartphone with us creates the problem.

I don't believe that either Tech or social media is intrinsically bad however I believe constant access to it at any point in your day already sets you up for failure. In reality you are probably better off using a dumb phone while your out and about and limiting social media use to a personal computer. Think of it like a beer a few a week is fine but all day every day It's gonna cause some problems. I will say that I don' fully agree with the point that people will find some other thing to distract them when faced with anxiety. The fact of the matter is that when you are out and about your phone is the biggest distraction available to you and if you didn't have that primary distraction you are pretty much forced to have to face that anxiety which will ultimately be better for you in the end. However this is a great video and I very much enjoyed it.

Nope, internet is the best way for me to distract myself from the realization of my death, which i can't escape and the fact that i will don't exist for eternity, it really helps me to calm my mind and numb my pain, agony, dread and despair, and i'm living like that since i was born, believe me, there's no difference between me and people who are doing something different, everyone is doing it for the same purpose - distraction from existential agony and dread, no one wants to face the harsh reality and so humankind stuffing its head with anything that can distract them and bring a temporary peace

I think of social media addiction as any other addiction.
Most things that people are commonly addicted to, such as food, exercise, TV, caffeine, sex, shopping, video games, etc. are obviously not inherently bad in itself, but it CAN be bad, depending on the person. Some people will be affected by it more than others. Some are very vulnerable to addiction and need to actively set boundaries for themselves or seek therapy, while others can use these things with no issue.
Social media can be really toxic for people who aren't mentally healthy, but that's because they aren't mentally healthy. It's not BECAUSE of social media. What happens if social media is taken from these people? Or if it never existed? If they don't have social media, it'll be something else. Compulsive shopping, alcoholism, binge eating, sex addiction, gambling, or anything else. Why? Because they still have emotional issues of some kind. This is why it takes more than just withdrawal to overcome addiction. Instead of solely blaming the item or act you're addicted to, you need to look at WHY you're addicted in the first place. Cutting off social media and doing a "detox" and nothing else won't change you, because once you have access to social media again, you'll just be addicted all over again, and if you never have access to social media, you'll just get addicted to something else anyway.

As always - love the perspective you're sharing. I think the world needs more of it! Sadly, though - what you're talking about here would require Us (at-large - with a capital "U") to begin to take responsibility for certain things we just don't really like to as a society. Maybe someday the majority will have the same refreshing take that you have about their power in situations, but - for now - that group doesn't seem to be the prevailing attitude. It's always easier to blame someone or something else. I'll definitely be sharing your video with others, though. Please keep pushing out the great content!

one of my big issues is body image. i would open instagram and say, "time to feel bad about myself!" And I would just scroll for hours looking at instagram models and feeling like i was pretty worthless. around christmas, i decided i would take a little break. i made a new year's resolution to stop feeling bad about my body. being off of social media has helped a lot with that. it's helped me get unstuck from constantly spiraling, constantly fixating. it's been three months since i deleted instagram and i feel differently now, when i see models and such. i can feel my brain not being as reactive to it. really great video, i love the points you've made!

I really appreciate your approach and perspective. As individuals we can do the best we can to control ourselves. I think that the concern relies on others’ misuse. We can never control others and their behavior. It’s much simpler and maybe even easier to monitor the tools at their disposal.
You’re right that the root is perhaps innate greed and the overall way our society is structured, but I think that tackling topics such as those are overwhelming and seem undefeatable for most. I think it then lends for people to push for the prohibition and heavy regulation of technological advancements over total societal reform.

    • @addyvalencia
      @addyvalencia 3 місяці тому +5

…I saw some comment stating that you’re blaming the individual rather than the corporations and governments that weaponize the psychology of addiction… and while I understand the sentiment, they’re reaching a lot lol. Addiction has existed way before modern society and its various issues. Temptation itself has existed since the beginning of humanity. We can acknowledge what’s out of our control while reminding ourselves that we still have the autonomy to make decisions for what we want out of life.

This is a topic I have been delving into more myself, and I agree with a lot of your points. I think a lot of people including myself personally experience anxiety from social media. I like the idea of getting rid of the apps, but in this day and age and with my career path, social media is essential. I think Gabbie Hanna made a really good video about why she took her break & how helpful it can be. I personally have turned off all of my notifications on my phone, which I think can be a better alternative to completely unplugging if that's something that isn't realistic like it isn't for me. This also helps me with my ADHD because then I don't get lost in my notifications when I'm trying to do a task on my phone. I feel like a lot of people's issues with social media are because of their own mental health issues. Yes, companies do try to make it addictive but I feel as though it is the same as just about anything. You can have a shopping addiction as well and although shopping excessively is bad, the act of shopping isn't necessarily harmful. You're addicted to the dopamine hit you get from doing it, it can be a distraction. And sometimes I used to scroll whenever I would get overwhelmed or frustrated with a task; but I've started turning my phone all the way off & deleted Tiktok, and I have found I am able to sit with myself more to work my way through the frustration when I would initially scroll as a crutch & waste hours of my time doing so. I enjoyed listening to your perspective on this topic.

I hate on social media so much, but then I literally wouldn't have recovered from complex PTSD without it.
The NHS diagnosed me with every mental illness under the sun except the one I actually have - I learned about CPTSD on Reddit. Then asked a psych about it and they said "yeah, that makes so much sense!" Which made me furious because I had to diagnose *myself* using the Internet. All the doctors I saw couldn't do that?
Then I had EMDR and other trauma therapy on the NHS. It was useless - you have 50 minutes a week with a psych who is so stressed out that they can barely remember who you are. No, I'm not the patient that has a phobia of escalators! How are you going to treat me when you can't even remember which patient I am?!
But I've been able to recover from CPTSD and chronic fatigue using videos from overseas psychs on YT, EMDR videos on YT, and CPTSD/EMDR subreddits. It's saved my life. And it's only taken a few months. So for all the time I spend complaining about the internet/social media, it has saved my life when the doctors couldn't. So I really need to be thankful for the internet instead. The UK is so far behind on treating trauma compared to the US/Canada. I literally wouldn't have been able to watch videos from those overseas psychs if it weren't for the Internet.

With my BPD, if I dont see someone or a place for a very long time, my mind believes its dead, its gone, its been erased, or it never existed in the first place? With social media, I can see their feeds and know they still exist and they are still alive, and just because we aren't actively talking offline at the moment, doesnt mean they didnt exist in the first place. In the old days, I felt really isolated, not helped by the fact that my Dad did everything in his power to STOP me mixing with people he considered the wrong sort(Ie anyone with a lower income than him) and so without access to the internet back then, if I didnt hear from people for ages, I'd think: They must be dead, they'd have called otherwise right? And then they'd come back out of the blue and either too much time has passed in which case I dont even remember they were ever part of my life at all so my response is: who the fuck are you, what do you want? Or I see them and go: Wow what happened? I thought you died. People thought it was just morbid humour but there's me standing there, hearing you rant over my head and thinking: does my expression look like I'm laughing right now? This shit is real. Now, I can see what is happening in places outside my road and know these places are STILL there. These people are STILL there, its not just my imagination working overtime, I'm not just a brain in a jar with receptors projecting a powerful simulation of the world around me, the world itself IS a real place. Without it, anything away from your house, your road, or your local town becomes suspect. Is it really there or am I going to head down that road and find it goes nowhere? That can be really scary at times.

Yes, same! For me internet was helpful for my autistic social blindness. I could learn social cues or reactions without stress by observing other users. Irl you cant go to people group and just observe them. You have to say sth. But on internet you can observe and dont have to respond imidietely. Also internet helped me understand better humour and layers of irony (but it was hard at the begining). Internet sometimes scares me (like when i was so against it) but i know its helpful too.

It's a bit of both. Companies who want to make money are going to feed off of people who are already using the space. When internet was invented it became the place people would visit most frequently, and so corporations flooded where the buyers were going.
Now that social media is here, that is where many are spending most of their time as far as media, and so naturally corporations are going to take advantage of it to maintain business. Social networks like Facebook, MySpace, etc at the time were created as ways to connect with others without any real way of knowing if these spaces would be extremely popular and make them rich. It wasn't until years later that they started to see the fruits of these social media sites.

Even if technology isn't inherently good or bad in the traditional sense, I'd still argue it inflicts a negative on the world. It causes others to adapt, and that causes them to expend energy in a variety of ways. It could be behavioral adaptations, it could be the rising "floor" of standards (where having a mobile phone is assumed these days, when it wasn't 30 years ago), and it could be the amplification of human nature. Think of all the work we have to do in order to account for and balance the ills of social media? Yes, it's used in bad ways (especially when it comes to young girls' mental health), and then when we collectively decide there's a problem, we have to apply regulations that have to be monitored and worked around on a regular basis. And that's IF we come together and decide there's a problem.
Then consider the time-lag of implementing a technology and finding out what its negative effects are (if any). How long has it taken people to become aware of negatives of things like microplastics, BPA, or even smoking.
As I mentioned, on a granular level, and even when it's such a benign change, it causes people to adapt which costs them energy. And the older you are the harder it is to properly adapt to that change. It could be anything like the latest popular celebrity, new functions on a word processor, how your computer connects to the internet. All of these changes incur a cost.
On the other hand, really accepting these implications would mean never changing, never growing, and being left in a great stagnation.
