I think people are less insecure about the times changing in the way of “oh you need to be good at social media to make it” but rather the angle of this being the new “video killed the radio star” It sorta just matters that you’re hot and trendy, if you’re talented but “ugly” you just aren’t going to make it. If you’re not immortally looking like your 20s your career is over. I hope that makes any sense. It definitely goes hand in hand with your conclusion, but I feel like I’m seeing comments that come from this angle too.
A big selling point and potential for profit for artists in the past was the live show, in addition to record sales, which is probably the biggest point of change from the past to current day. Now record labels care about who gets the most streams and views for revenue so whoever gets the most clicks/eyeballs on them is what sells, not necessarily who sells out shows by virtue of their sheer talent (although those artists still exist). You don't have to be able to deliver fantastic live shows or have an impressive discography anymore, you just need views....which you can get any number of ways (image, virality, shock value, etc).
Working in the industry, There is Talent then there is Excellence. Talent is nice to have, but Excellence will separate you. Overall, the current field is having a moment of low standards. We will always have one-hit wonders and hype. And then.. the worse is the lack of development. Anderson Paak and Doja Cat are great example of putting into Excellence.
It just irks me a little that Jojo's thing is dance, but the choreography for karma is kinda awful? The moves don't make sense to me at all, they're bizarre and to me as a viewer they seem basic and "easy", not impressive and not telling a story (at least, not one with any clarity, I don't see a story). So then it's like, ok, is Jojo's strength just gaming the audience without having actual skills? Idk
I really like this topic! :) also I love how you're able to be honest and analytical while still being polite. however, I disagree with the idea that people are just "snobs" though. I believe that when art released to the public for profit, it's okay for people to voice what they like and dislike about it (politely, of course, hate isn't okay!). also as a musician, I think criticism helps people grow- if nobody was willing to tell me when my voice was flat or my breath control was weak, I wouldn't have known what to improve. I know that with the ice spice situation, some of the criticism is coming from fans, which I think is completely valid- if someone pays a lot of money to see an artist they like, I do think it's fair for them to be disappointed if they're not seeing whatever amount of effort they were expecting. you're completely right that it's not the artists' fault though! I honestly think if record labels would be willing to invest in artist development again and allow them to have more breathing room between releases, less people would be saying stuff like that. I love tiktok and spotify because I can find smaller artists who are actually good. I stopped listening to music on the radio over a decade ago and just find good musicians online. If you're a lesser known musician , please keep making music, and please put yourself out there. People like me are actively discovering musicians like you. ❤
SoundCloud is really good for smaller musicians too!!! I know a lot of people know SoundCloud for “SoundCloud rappers” but their really are others that are so underrated and unappreciated on there and some not even heard of!!!
Every sound is valid but virality and success still aren't musical talent and gimicks can't replace a good artistic foundation. Besides "talent" is just working your ass off at your craft, someone can go viral and be actually talented, those are not mutually exclusive.

I think people get upset by people like Jojo because you see so many people with amazing vocal talent who can't even get half as far as her and the industry is a hundred percent behind her. I would argue this is happening even with non industry plants. Im gonna get crucified for this but miss Swift is a huge example. Shes so corporate and disconnected from everything, i just cant relate to her music anymore and so many of these big artists DIDN'T grow organically. They were born into money, had extensive connections in the industry through their families, and have entire teams behind them to manipulate media and pr to sway things in their direction. Taylor may be cooperate now but she did grow organically. Her family did have wealth but the local gigs and online marketing made her noticed as a country artist

the barrier to entry is so low with the internet. before, you had to gain a following local to one place. now, you can have fans internationally while being a lesser artist. anyone can gain an audience. that’s why we saw an uptick in bad rappers during the soundcloud era, bad alt bands during the myspace era, and now bad pop stars in the tik tok era.
I understand and respect what you saying but as a musician and someone who's really into music it's hard for me to grasp. I grew up on hip hop R&B Funk soul jazz all types of music. Jazz has given me a purpose and through studying it and music in general I've learned a whole new language.. Our culture is so rich. Idk where I'd be without it. I feel like so many young people will never know about it I don't understand why that has to change. There's nothing prolific about a lot of the music out these days. I don't know what to say and it's hard for me to grasp. it's just sad. I just think about the youth and what they're missing out on

I feel like this kind of ties in with the current AI art debacle as well. Anyone now has the ability to use computer tools to create art (physical or musical) but without the background knowledge of what works, they can't get as far as those who have trained or practiced in the respective field.

I have friends who host backyard concerts during the summer. The artists that perform aren't that well-known, but they are very talented. It's a shame they can't get the fame of some of these less talented so-called artists.

this is an interesting topic! i disagree with the conclusion that this kind of distaste comes from an aversion to change, though I do think an aversion to change is an undercurrent for a lot of our behavior. I think that this phenomenon comes from the same place that the reaction to nepotism and industry plants does, which is to say that human beings in most if not all cultures love to believe that someone has “earned” what they have. record labels spend thousands on crafting these home grown images for artists and many artists obfuscate or lie about their history to downplay their privileges that aided them in their success. strife and struggle are maybe the largest draw to rooting for artists on shows like american idol. even the reaction to artists not writing their own music is a reflection of this same idea. people want to see that an artist either sacrificed for, struggled for, or possess an innate gift for their claim to notoriety. we are awed by talent and moved by effort. if there is a perception of both lack of talent and lack of effort, there is a feeling of failure to earn success and I think that naturally creates an atmosphere of dissatisfaction. in a broader sense I think this speaks to the human spirit of perseverance. rather than the idea that someone’s success is a product of luck of circumstances, we prefer to think that they earned what they have and thus what they have can be replicated through earnest efforts. algorithmic success is difficult to quantify or explain, so virality often resonates more as luck than effort, especially when there’s a decided lack of talent. lastly I think the idea of what it means to earn is probably changing. marketing yourself via social media wasn’t a thing before so it’s not really considered a talent in the same way that singing is, but I do think that idea is changing. I don’t know if it can ever be considered a substitute for talent for the actual thing you’re trying to do (no one thinks a marketing manager is the “talent” of an artist who can sing, so I dont necessarily think being good at marketing yourself will be enough for people to consider your artistry authentic,) but I do think that the idea of being good at social media will itself become a more well received skill as time goes on. anyway great video!! it gave me a lot to think about!

With easier access to technology, the relationship between the artist and their audience is heavily affected as social media is, as of now, an everyday culture for a large population of people. I feel everyone should get to experience a time when they were fanning over some less than talented artists. As a millennial we look back and laugh about it. We had Milli Vanilli, Nick Lachey, a host of pop, rock, hip hop artists that we are now laughing about liking back then. I believe it’s the fact that these artists make loads of money and are quite arrogant while being less talented that makes some people upset. Idk if we look back this isn’t a new occurrence, we’ve always had less than talented people sprinkled throughout.

MJ, Chris, and Usher loved doing what they do and then made millions and now it’s kinda the other way around. Ppl want to make money so they leverage what they can on social media to do it. That doesn’t mean they can’t grow to love it but that was not what started them on the path. That can be felt by ppl so I think it’s more of that than change

It's been going on for a while now. But back in the day, they at least had to be able to do SOMETHING. A pretty, marketable face, that can also sing, was the golden ticket. The difference NOW, is they forgot how to do it. They at least had to grow organically. The problem with Ice Spice, is she came out of nowhere and was everywhere, as if there was some time skip we all jumped through. Every few years, there'll be somebody that a music label wants to push, because they think they'll be marketable and make money. Plenty of rock bands that didn't write their own music. Half of RnB singers didn't write either. Same for rappers.
Same with Tyla, don't get me wrong she is a beautiful, bubbly woman but she had 1 viral song "Water" and now all of a sudden she is winning grammy's over other artist who I personally think are more talented and have been working longer and harder in the industry, all her comments under songs mostly talk ab her looks rather then her actual talent. She is very talented but I feel like all of her songs lowkey sound the same, and seems a bit similair to the rise of ice spice but no one wants to talk about it:/
I would like to make a case for people having to grow into their talent in front of the public because they don't have the resources to prepare to be this polished and developed talent and also people realizing they want to dive into a another part of the entertainment industry that they could potentially be good at and building the confidence to actually pursue that full-time like Jojo could actually work her way up like not every singer is great at first and need more polishing so that they can shine like there's so much judgement online from people who want to feel superior to her cuz they are advanced in singing or who think they're a better judge of talent which I think is ridiculous.

the barrier to entry is so low with the internet. before, you had to gain a following local to one place. now, you can have fans internationally while being a lesser artist. anyone can gain an audience. that’s why we saw an uptick in bad rappers during the soundcloud era, bad alt bands during the myspace era, and now bad pop stars in the tik tok era.
I understand and respect what you saying but as a musician and someone who's really into music it's hard for me to grasp. I grew up on hip hop R&B Funk soul jazz all types of music. Jazz has given me a purpose and through studying it and music in general I've learned a whole new language.. Our culture is so rich. Idk where I'd be without it. I feel like so many young people will never know about it I don't understand why that has to change. There's nothing prolific about a lot of the music out these days. I don't know what to say and it's hard for me to grasp. it's just sad. I just think about the youth and what they're missing out on
I was thinking about this very same thing lately especially with the discourse with certain artist these past month and the excuses people make to defend an untalented person is literally killing music.

I feel like this kind of ties in with the current AI art debacle as well. Anyone now has the ability to use computer tools to create art (physical or musical) but without the background knowledge of what works, they can't get as far as those who have trained or practiced in the respective field.
That's true, AI is changing things as well, but you can't beat knowing the fundamentals.

I have friends who host backyard concerts during the summer. The artists that perform aren't that well-known, but they are very talented. It's a shame they can't get the fame of some of these less talented so-called artists.

Good video but PLEASE fix your mic. When listening on earbuds, your voice only comes in through the left ears. Then when you cut to new clips it sometimes comes back in the right ear. It’s super jarring and distracting
this is an interesting topic! i disagree with the conclusion that this kind of distaste comes from an aversion to change, though I do think an aversion to change is an undercurrent for a lot of our behavior. I think that this phenomenon comes from the same place that the reaction to nepotism and industry plants does, which is to say that human beings in most if not all cultures love to believe that someone has “earned” what they have. record labels spend thousands on crafting these home grown images for artists and many artists obfuscate or lie about their history to downplay their privileges that aided them in their success. strife and struggle are maybe the largest draw to rooting for artists on shows like american idol. even the reaction to artists not writing their own music is a reflection of this same idea. people want to see that an artist either sacrificed for, struggled for, or possess an innate gift for their claim to notoriety. we are awed by talent and moved by effort. if there is a perception of both lack of talent and lack of effort, there is a feeling of failure to earn success and I think that naturally creates an atmosphere of dissatisfaction. in a broader sense I think this speaks to the human spirit of perseverance. rather than the idea that someone’s success is a product of luck of circumstances, we prefer to think that they earned what they have and thus what they have can be replicated through earnest efforts. algorithmic success is difficult to quantify or explain, so virality often resonates more as luck than effort, especially when there’s a decided lack of talent.
lastly I think the idea of what it means to earn is probably changing. marketing yourself via social media wasn’t a thing before so it’s not really considered a talent in the same way that singing is, but I do think that idea is changing. I don’t know if it can ever be considered a substitute for talent for the actual thing you’re trying to do (no one thinks a marketing manager is the “talent” of an artist who can sing, so I dont necessarily think being good at marketing yourself will be enough for people to consider your artistry authentic,) but I do think that the idea of being good at social media will itself become a more well received skill as time goes on.

With easier access to technology, the relationship between the artist and their audience is heavily affected as social media is, as of now, an everyday culture for a large population of people. As a newly discovered artist (it was a tiktok thing too lol), I'm very curious to see what is in store for our collective conscious and humanity as the development of technology and electronic art progresses. I feel everyone should get to experience a time when they were fanning over some less than talented artists. As a millennial we look back and laugh about it. We had Milli Vanilli, Nick Lachey, a host of pop, rock, hip hop artists that we are now laughing about liking back then. I believe it’s the fact that these artists make loads of money and are quite arrogant while being less talented that makes some people upset. Idk if we look back this isn’t a new occurrence, we’ve always had less than talented people sprinkled throughout.

Short answer: Yes, they are getting less talented and more vapid.
I don’t think it’s that ppl don’t like change. I think it’s the commodification of everything. MJ, Chris, and Usher loved doing what they do and then made millions and now it’s kinda the other way around. Ppl want to make money so they leverage what they can on social media to do it. That doesn’t mean they can’t grow to love it but that was not what started them on the path. That can be felt by ppl so I think it’s more of that than change
i feel like producers are outshining the singers now. those who mix and make the beats are incredible imo and bland artists rely on these ppl because they bring nothing to the songs themselves

It's been going on for a while now. But back in the day, they at least had to be able to do SOMETHING. A pretty, marketable face, that can also sing, was the golden ticket. The difference NOW, is they forgot how to do it. They at least had to grow organically. The problem with Ice Spice, is she came out of nowhere and was everywhere, as if there was some time skip we all jumped through. Every few years, there'll be somebody that a music label wants to push, because they think they'll be marketable and make money. Plenty of rock bands that didn't write their own music. Half of RnB singers didn't write either. Same for rappers.

Same with Tyla, don't get me wrong she is a beautiful, bubbly woman but she had 1 viral song "Water" and now all of a sudden she is winning grammy's over other artist who I personally think are more talented and have been working longer and harder in the industry, all her comments under songs mostly talk ab her looks rather then her actual talent. She is very talented but I feel like all of her songs lowkey sound the same, and seems a bit similair to the rise of ice spice but no one wants to talk about it:/
I would like to make a case for people having to grow into their talent in front of the public because they don't have the resources to prepare to be this polished and developed talent and also people realizing they want to dive into a another part of the entertainment industry that they could potentially be good at and building the confidence to actually pursue that full-time like Jojo could actually work her way up like not every singer is great at first and need more polishing so that they can shine like there's so much judgement online from people who want to feel superior to her cuz they are advanced in singing or who think they're a better judge of talent which I think is ridiculous.
