I made granola bars yesterday! I have been making them for a few years now. They are great for using up oats, cereal that isn’t getting eaten, random nuts that need used up. And they freeze so well, I wrap each bar in plastic wrap and then pack them in a gallon freezer bag and we grab one when we leave the house so that we don’t go through the drive thru. Save, save! Also, they are also delicious made with almond butter or cashew butter!

Life is one big learning experience. I'm 65 now and still learning.
The intent of this challenge, I think, was to expose holes in your pantry stock, draw attention to your likes and dislikes, force you into creating with what you have and experiment with substitutions. Seems you touched all those bases and are ready to put what you've learned into practice. I'm sure you'll be able to make better decisions and meal plans because of it ... YAY!

I sure hope so! This definitely was an eye opening experience! 😄

I resurrected my 20+ year old bread machine after watching gals use the dough function for pizza dough. I can make 3 hot dog buns and 3 hamburger buns with one batch (no more wasting an 8 pack from the store, it's just my hubby and I). I've made pizza dough for calzones and pizza all for pennies and way less effort.
I also picked up a tip to weigh the flour using no more than 5 oz per cup. It makes lighter dough and the bread lasts longer because the excess flour doesn't soak up all the moisture.
Great video! So smart to know when to call it quits

I’ve not made pizza dough in the bread maker yet I’ll have to try that next, and weighing my flour out! Thank you so much! 😊

Maybe put a white board on your refrigerator or and freezer what leftovers and what should be used up. So a heads up what is fast,
or what to include in a weekly meal plan.

That's a great idea! I actually have a white board on the fridge but I only ever used it to write down meal ideas. I think it could be much more useful with a leftovers/use up list on it!

Great meal prepping! Over my 50+years I have that using a hand mixer to mash potatoes turns them into mush. Just a plain old metal potato masher works the best. If you heat your milk or cream in the microwave you’re potatoes will stay hot over. Debi in Vicksburg, MS. 🥰🥰

I bet you that’s the issue! I never use the hand mixer but decided to pick it up this time for whatever reason. I would’ve never thought of that, thank you! 😄

I may have to check that out. I've heard of Amish friendship bread but not sandwich bread! I'm always up for trying out a new bread recipe 😄

I am impressed with you making hot dog buns. I need to try that. How about continue challenge but only buy things to continue to use us what you have-just the ingredients you need to complete meals?/

Honestly, I hadn't thought about that for myself until someone else suggested it as well. I've seen other people going about it that way but I guess I had an all or nothing mindset of using everything up. I'm still continuing to use everything up that needs gone, just not documenting it. There wasn't really all that much left anyhow. I'll be keeping a small budget in mind for next year though!

I appreciated your observations of the pantry challenges. I did not officially participate, but I did put the principles in place. My take aways are very similar to yours. I could do much better in managing our valuable food in some areas. Store bought canned meats ( in my long term pantry) are really not very good in my opinion. I haven't pressure canned my own yet to know if we care for it any better. First time visiting your channel. Thank you.

I'm so glad you got something out of it! I've found the home canned meat to have more flavor than the store canned, which probably has something to do with brining it or just roasting it with spices before canning. It definitely still has the same tender "fall apart" texture but I tend to like my meat that way anyway so it's not a big issue for me!

i believe you did awsome just give yourself some grace also, give your self a small budget while doing the pantry challenge, other content creaters gave themselves a small budget for dairy products.and home goods.

Thank you! Yes, I probably could have given myself a budget to be able to make it further into the challenge. I'll have to keep that in mind for next year!

Oh no! I'm so sorry to hear that! 😢 I've had trouble in the past with bad yeast and making my water too hot for blooming the yeast. I wonder if it could be either of those?
