Thanks for the review! Aliens is my all-time top 10 favorite films. I saw it many times when it first came out in theatres in 1986 and numerous times on vhs, dvd and blu ray - so many times that I lost count. I’m shocked and disgusted to hear that you’ve been threatened in any way for reviewing a film. Those are not the actions of movie lovers, rather those of cowardly haters. Keep doing your thing!

I don't like how the AI messes with smaller finedetails, and facial details of actors in the background. It looks to smooth and digital now, lacking the gritty feeling of the original.
I wish they had made a proper 4K transfer, from the original negatives, instead of AI upscaling the old one...

Yeah, I've seen some crazy trash talk in the forums. It's the internet's curse, empowering the emotionally/mentally weak and giving voice to cowards and rotted souls (trolls/haters that wrap themselves in the "freedom"). Getting this worked up over these 3 Cameron movies and one's opinions about them...insane. So easy to mock someone else's work versus doing it yourself. Lazy. And then issuing threats? Very sad. James Cameron attended the Saturn Awards (which I produce) this past February 4th and I have to tell you that he loves the fans and is himself a big fan, so as an innovator he’s always trying to push the limits of technology - and as with all innovators, there will be haters. Cameron is one of my all time favorite filmmakers and I love all of his films.
I loved the clarification about how the AI tech is advancing rapidly and quickly starting to produce respectable results. I went to a conference recently that basically ended up being about AI applications in computer graphics. I went in to it thinking AI was just the latest tech bubble buzzword. It is for some things. But not for this.
Have Aliens on pre-order looking forward to diving into this on 4K - BTW just ignore the haters and trolls no need to waste time in a video giving them a voice

Watching this movie in 4k on my OLED TV looked really good.
Good to hear you enjoyed Aliens 4K. I believe this production used a new film stock that caused problems for the cine photographer. The film stock was withdrawn after only one year. Overcoming those problems were impossible previously but they appear to have finally achieved it. Very impressive computer image processing. James Cameron is always at the forefront. Cheers!
You gotta love the 80's.... 1980-1984 still had 70's type film stock although with a (somewhat) less brown/yellow tint than 70's stuff. Then you had the 1985-86 movies, many of which used that notoriously grainy film stock. Than the 1987- circa 1992 film stock, which had much better color reproduction and clarity than the earlier stuff.
I really don't understand all the hate to James Cameron, he's been pouring so much knowledge to the modern Filmmaking. They don't criticize much Avatar films, I don't understand, they must be those those isolated people who's stays in theirs rooms all the day. James and James Cameron are top in the Filmmaking business,right up there with Lucas, Spielberg, Kubrick, De Palma and Coppola that he deserves seriously a well earned respect. I've spoken.
People will only hate on him - and rightfully so - when he purposely changes the grading on these movies, which it sadly looks like he's still doing by insisting on much the same one here as seen on the Blu-ray, which again is why I'm not buying either of these releases...

There are always haters out there.
Most movie enthusiasts who have been waiting for these movies since Blu-ray came out are probably most disappointed by the choices James Cameron has made.
In 2010, Predator (Ultimate Hunter Edition) came out on Blu-ray and I remember all the noise that arose when it came out and all Grain was removed from the film, which was also originally a very Grainy movie. It looks like James Cameron wants his films to follow the same direction with as little grain as possible and far too high contrast which gives an unnatural image.
It seems The Abyss and Aliens got the most care! I am surprised Aliens was not rereleased in theatres!
Yes it had a re-release. I saw both movies. Monday was ALIEN and Tuesday ALIENS. In cinemark in my country. In its 4K HDR version.

It’s amazing how much work and detail you put in to these in-depth reviews. It’s saddens me that there are “haters” out there, who have nothing better to do than complain. That is what is great about UA-cam channels, anyone can produce them, and say whatever they want, regardless of their opinions. It’s a much more positive and creative thing to do, rather than just taking cheap shots on other people’s channels, who bring joy to their viewers by sharing their love of movies and collecting.

This film looks amazing in 4K. I noticed the lighting was changed scenes are brighter and even the dark scenes are cleaned up and you don’t see the film grain as much.

I'm glad you reviewed this. I watched another video 2 days ago and they showed screenshots/Stills and it looked waxy like T2. The grain was completely gone etc. Obviously it was fake as what you have showed looks great like the Alien release. I guess i'll just watch you from now on. Stellar review!

@InSearchofPhysicalMedia I won't say who they are, but I had faith in them as they had a lot of subscribers. I have watched many of their other reviews, and they were true to form as when I bought recommended titles, they turned out exactly like what was detailed. They also showed the case and disc, etc, so they definitely have it. I just don't think they tested the actual disc and wanted to be ahead as the first reviewer type thing. I have also watched many of your reviews and have never been disappointed, so that shows that you have facts. You also take your time analysing, etc. You definitely deserve more subscribers. For me, I trust you 100%, and it's great to have a truthful, trustworthy reviewer that isn't just after likes etc but cares too. Thank You 🫡
Great review. I’ve owned Aliens on widescreen VHS, DVD and blu-ray. The image quality never bothered me as it’s a gritty film. I’m excited to see the extra details and will get this on 4k. Good on the disk including all versions of the movie (although I personally prefer the theatrical cut).
Some people get confused between their opinions and facts. Thank you for presenting the facts and avoiding all the losers that have to complain and threaten to just to have something to say. I appreciated and enjoyed this review greatly!
You sound like I did when I first saw Apocalypse Now or Raiders of the Lost Ark when they were remastered in 1080p for blu-ray. They were so clear & detailed, like I was watching them for the first time. I would say, it wasn't that it was the clearest and most vivid Spielberg or Coppola film I've ever seen, it was like you were watching what the director was actually seeing when he shot the movie that day! I am getting this 4K disc based on. your review. I look forward to seeing what you did, and also feeling how you felt watching it. 👍

I read so many hateful comments from people (FB mostly) WHO DIDN'T EVEN HAVE THE MOVIE YET! They're not really haters, they're sad lonely people who want/crave attention. They're the same people who laughed at chat-gpt 3 and then were stupified by chat-gpt 4 two months later.

This is great news!! Love this in depth review. Great job! I really wanted my copies of all 3 movies on Tuesday but now I'm hearing that there was some manufacturing issues and this could delay a week or week and a half. I'm not sure about the US but it could affect Canada. I Pre-ordered mine within an hour of it being available and I still don't have my shipping date info that I would normally have by now. Anyone else have this issue with their pre order? Hopefully I'll get my copy next week. 🤞

Nice! Thanks. My understanding is the movie was filmed on an experimental film stock plus not processed properly, leading to excessive film grain. I don’t care what excuses have been made, creative intent etc, etc. I love this movie anyway. Can’t wait for the 4K release!

Watch Micheal Mann's Collateral UHD bluray. OMG is it grainy, even the 4K transfer. it's hard to watch honestly. he used experimental Viper digital cameras back in 2004 and the early (too early imo) adoption of digital technology REALLY shows. Luckily I found a AI Hybrid version that really stomped down on the digital noise.

I experienced some of that (all be it on a lesser level than you) on the blu ray forum, which is why I requested my account be shut down. I've been holding off preordering this due to controversy surrounding its AI remastering. But now having seen the comparison screen shots I'm seriously impressed with the upgrade in detail. Let the ludites complain about the use of AI, I couldnt careless how the restoration is done as long as improvements like this can be achieved. Looks like the technology for restoration has made some serious advances.
Anyway, thanks for the informative review, I'm off to preorder Aliens asap.

Great reviews. Even if they weren’t supremely excellent, Abyss and True Lies were basically must buys if for no other reason than the last official releases were DVDs. And for Aliens, I’m so glad to hear that it got the care and effort it deserved.

Unfortunately, I wasn't worried about DNR and oversharpening, but about AI trickery making up detail where it didn't exist, and I'm still not convinced. Knowing how grainy the original 1986 film stock was, the images you've presented look suspicious, to say the least. Does it look good? In theory, yes; but I don't think this is a faithful representation of what audiences watched in theaters (without dust and scratches), and to me that should always be the goal of any transfer. The only objectively good thing is that the color grading seems much better, and more in line with the pre-bluray releases; for the rest, I'm still on the fence. Thank you for the in-depth review!

Great review James. The only reason I don't want to buy this is because I'd rather wait for a box set, but there's probably a risk of not having THIS version of Aliens in a box set.

I was hoping James Cameron could pull off another great restoration like Titanic. Looks like this could be a contender for the best 4k release of 2024 and we just started!
What is so strange to me is the POV (of some) that we need to put our foot down and stand against this AI movement now before it’s too late. Too late for what exactly? If AI can help revive things that otherwise would be cost prohibitive? Then I don’t see the problem with it. It’s only going to get better as we move forward. But, in the meantime The Abyss and Aliens gives you an example of what is possible.
But, then again what do I know… I’m just a movie lover (like many of us) that gets excited to see my favorite movies in the best possible quality and right now this is it. So, cry me a river already. 🤷🏻♂️
I finally have a delivery date of 3/24 from Amazon for Aliens. Hopefully, it’ll be sooner as The Abyss shows 3/15. Exciting! :)

Sounds like the only thing bad about this 4k is just the cover art.
Still better than all the bluray and dvd covers with the alien head on them. It resembles the original poster with Ripley and Newt.

I’m glad we are here together at the end of all things (LOTR quote). And yeah man, I feel you when you say these movies remind you of your Dad. My Dad brought our family to the theaters and collected all of them on VHS and DVD etc. too. Rewatching these old classics make it feel like Dad’s back with me. Aww, such bittersweet memories. For me, Aliens is the greatest sci-fi ever made. That says a lot. I love The Terminator, Star Wars, Empire, 2001, Alien, ET, Avatar, The Thing, Predator, The Matrix, etc. But Aliens blows them all away. Ive probably seen this masterpiece over 30,000,000 times in my lifetime and it still feels fresh. I literally see new things about Aliens that ive never seen before. You might say that Aliens is the Citizen Kane of the action / sci-fi / horror genre.
I cant wait to see this new 4K transfer of Aliens.
Come on, Cameron. Its time for a great 4K release of The Terminator and Terminator 2.

Thank you for being honest in your review, It's too bad that people are threatening you, we live in some strange times. I ordered my copy and still have not gotten it yet and I am very excited to watch the film again. I feel like I'll be watching it for the first time again. I have watched another popular review channel that wasn't as enthusiastic about the transfer as you are, he didn't show any screenshots from the film Aliens (only True Lies, which he said looked waxy) he did mention that Cameron did tinker around with the films grain, but not in the positive way that you have put it. I can not wait to get my copy and watch Aliens 2.0 as you phrased it.
Sounds amazing. I'm more excited to buy Aliens than ever. And Ive bought every home video release of this timeless masterpiece.
Lets just hope James Cameron figures out how disappointed we all are and gives us a proper 4K release of T2.

Thank you for your excellent review. I have been so looking forward to this release. Like you, Aliens has always been one of my favourites and I have (I think)copy in every format ever released. I now have this on preorder and cannot wait to get my hands on it 😛.
Every screen grab I’ve seen from this release has shown a clear improvement over anything that’s gone before. I was originally rather concerned how it would turn out, as it has always appeared rather grainy and variable in past versions. Indeed, I had heard that some of the additional footage in the extended version was reconstructed from video transfers due to loss of the original film stock. Maybe this was just hearsay, but some of these scenes always looked poor in the old versions I have and when screened on TV.

Relief for me to hear it’s a killer transfer. This movie was at top of my list, since 4k was announced. Hopefully the globalists don’t ruin my viewing pleasure going forward.
