    JD's habit of singing under the note was a practiced one. His philosophy was you can go up to fix a flat note, but it was harder to go down and fix a sharp one. The part of the video where the lady had the facial expression, I was in the studio when that was being done. Lots of fun memories there.

    • @maloxi1472
      @maloxi1472 2 роки тому +1

      Dan, I've always wanted to ask you, since your use of extended bass singing techniques is honestly mind-blowing:
      - How to improve my vocal fry (make it sound more "buttery" and less "creaky") ? Any exercises to recommend ?
      - How do I learn to pitch my vocal fry (down and up) in order to connect it to my chest voice ? I've noticed that the lower my chest voice is (for example in the morning), the better my vocal fry sounds... but it might be the other way around; in which case, how do I keep my voice in general that low during the day ?
      My preferred techniques to sing really low are subharmonics and chest-fry mix, so you can understand why improving the vocal fry is so important... or maybe it's not as important as I think and I'm missing something 😅

      Also, in the last few months, I've finally found a way to stabilize the lower subs without relying on morning voice (there's just no way around grinding to develop the muscle memory and voice quality). Sub range is now Eb1-B1.
      Now working on speed, stamina and vowel/timbre variations to blend better with the lower chest voice and be able to sing entire phrases 😎 I'll go back to extending the range when that's done...

    And I'm like, sure someday ppl will try and do more lower voices, but they never sound so good. I firmly believe that JD Sumner hit the best sound bass voice of all time.

    Keep practicing, you are a bass, and with age, even lower

      Oh, he is a bass, without a doubt. His natural voice is definitely slightly lower than most baritones and only slightly higher than many of the low bass singers, but he is a bass, nonetheless.

      Yea I've heard Dave hit an effortless B1 chest in some video. (Maybe the Home Free Camday one)

      @@azeemsyed8550, Dave could be trained to be a phenomenal bass singer. Remember, he is hitting those notes seated, which is the worst position to attempt them in. Learning larynx control and head-placement, I could get Dave at least 4 semi-tones lower.

      @@johndeeregreen4592 Is it really the worst position to hit low notes? In what way is it the worst, projection-wise or in terms of ease?

    • @johndeeregreen4592
      @johndeeregreen4592 3 роки тому

      @@azeemsyed8550, standing position is always best for diaphragm control, air movement, head placement, larynx position, and head position. Dave is hitting that B1 in a position many trained bass singers would struggle. The average bass is done at D2 or C2, anyway... only the elite make it to B1 and below. That first octave and below, many bass singers cannot hit.

    A young man around 14 has just joined our church choir; his father is a tenor.
    But the young man is a very low bass.
    He is just learning to sing.
    What would you recommend, specific to a deep bass, training that is best to not damage his voice, and instead bring out the best of his voice?
    He needs ear training and music theory too.
