- I had a super lightweight monitor to mount in my shop for a shop computer. Here's how I went about making a swing arm for it!
Full details at : www.iliketomakestuff.com/make-...
Here's what you'll need:
amzn.to/1QqcFZH - 24" Acer Monitor
amzn.to/1S7Qnte - Mac Mini
amzn.to/1MsTiZH - Apple Bluetooth Keyboard
amzn.to/1I3KBl7 - Apple Magic Trackpad
amzn.to/1FbfQsn - Silicone keyboard cover
amzn.to/1e5V4Ft - Logitech Webcam
amzn.to/1Fbgs1k - HDMI cable
amzn.to/1f5a3j9 - USB hub
amzn.to/1I3KF4m - Raspberry Pi
amzn.to/1HAzy7b - Wood glue
amzn.to/1JLI03F - Strap hinge
amzn.to/1F9P9o3 - 2 - 1/2" hinge
amzn.to/1MwrELe - Table Saw
amzn.to/1I9twGt - Miter Saw
For a while now, I’ve been wanting to have a dedicated shop computer so that I didn’t have to bring my laptop into the shop and cover it with dust. Dust is definitely one of the biggest problems with having a computer of any type in the shop, so I decided to skip that problem completely..
For the computer, I bought a used Mac Mini on Ebay and instead of putting it in my shop, I put it in my office (which shares a wall with my shop). I poked a small hole through the drywall and fed through an HDMI and USB cable. The audio and video come through the HDMI, and the USB connects to a small USB hub which I mounted to the back side of the monitor.
Having the USB hub allows me to connect things in the shop like a webcam (possibly for live streaming from the shop?) and my X-carve (cnc machine), which is the main reason that I wanted a computer in the shop anyway.
For a keyboard and mouse solution, I’m using a small Apple keyboard and an Apple Magic Track pad (I prefer it to a mouse) both of which are Bluetooth. I cover the keyboard with a silicone cover, attached with some clear tape, to keep out dust.
Another option for the computer would be a Raspberry Pi, a small inexpensive linux computer. It would be great for surfing the web, listening to music and watching video. Unfortunately, it won’t run the software I need for for running CNC, so it wasn’t an option for me.
Concerning the monitor itself, I’m using a 24″ Acer, which only weighs 6 lbs. If you have a monitor that has considerably more weight, this type of mount will probably not be strong enough. my monitor is REALLY light and thin, so this works fine for me.

New project! In this one I show you how to make a simple monitor swing arm and go over the details of my new shop computer.
Well done, Bob! _Thanks_
Gray Gutierrez Thank you very much for letting me know! I've submitted the take down requests. I really appreciate it!
+I Like To Make Stuff Well, that is most certainly a way around those acer monitor's not having a vesa mount. You should scan the adapter you made for the post and upload it for 3d printing. or better yet make a vesa to that post adapter then scan it for 3d printing then provide the scan for it. I think you would make a lot of people happy.
+GregLH0 Just FYI scanning the Mount could be a copyright or patent violation against Acer. They are also starting to put databases together that a 3D printer would have to check to prevent 3D Printers from printing copy right or patented objects, FYI. Nice project!
+P. Wingert On other thing to note I had a take down notice on a video that showed a brand name of a computer monitor that I featured in the video explaining a software configuration. The claim was that I used the company's logo without authorization. Keep this in mind. Now I go back and blur all identifying marks on hardware that is in any video I make.
I saw the electronics table and i was like "daaamn, this guy knows his stuff"
Then I saw this and I was like "dude, wtf! This guy really knows how to do it"
Totally suscribed.
I just had surgery and so I was marathoning your vids. Glad a new one popped up because I was about to rewatch all the ones I've just seen.
Awesome! Thanks for watching and I hope your recovery is quick!!
Impressive how much usefulness can come from such a simple build. Nice work as always sir.
Ever since you mentioned this in the podcast, I've been eagerly awaiting this. Woo!
I'm trying to get into prop-making as a hobby and I love DIY stuff so I cant wait to watch more of your stuff :D
this is great bob! i started off with an lcd mounted on a standard lightweight mount from monoprice, but moved up to a 24" tv. it's significantly heavier and now i'm wishing i'd go back to the normal lcd. i startred off with a SUPER old mac mini, the core2duo one with 2gb ram, but it just was too slow so i ended up buying my old boss' little acer 11" laptop and that's been great. man i've rambled on.
anyway, yes, please, live streaming from in the shop would be rad. i always enjoyed with dave and cremona and a few others have done it.
awesome project, once again.
Clever and practical build, Bob!
That's pretty sweet. Thanks for the heads up about the Raspberry Pi. Very interesting little setup.
Nice job Bob, the setup looks great.
Great build Bob! Keep up the good work!
Also a huge Apple fan, so way to go there too!
Looking forward to your live stream :)
I always enjoy your videos and can hardly wait for a live stream.
Looks like a great setup, Bob. Yeah, being able to watch the youtubes while you do other things is great.
Cool swing arm. I like the computer in the adjacent room idea too.
Great idea for a monitor mount! I use a 24 inch TV as a monitor for my shop computer and it is mounted on my stand-up work station that my X-Carve is on.
yes to live stream! really like what you do!
Cool project!
Nice setup & good tips.
Well done! will need to do something similar in my workshop :)
This is incredible!
New subscriber . . .
Very cool . . . excellent option for a monitor in the shop. Thanks!
Love having a computer in the shop! Just put in some ceiling speakers and makes it easy to listen to your Making It podcast :) Glued a cleat to my keyboard so it hangs on the french cleat next to my monitor. In fact most of the time I just keep it hanging on the wall and type on there.
Very nice Bob!
Great project, plan on doing it very soon. I'm sure it was a bit stressful going full time on UA-cam but you are doing great and your on the right track. I liked it when you teamed up with Make on that wood LED table as well. Great job and keep it up. :)
YODA 1 Thank you!!
hell yeah! a live stream would be neat.
piano hinges
cheap and strong!
love these vids!
Parabens adoramos seus projetos, saudações Brasil.
pretty sweet bob! and yea i think streaming live is cool. id be a viewer if i was notified about the time.for sure! ur vids are awsome one of these days ill get there,,lol !
hey, have a good one bob!
I love your videos :)
Thank you!!
I defiantly believe a live stream would be very good to have done Bob! Would gather so much knowledge from you and your audience would be benefit highly possibly consider a Q&A on the stream aswell.
+Louis Pink I now livestream on Twitch! www.twitch.tv/iliketomakestuff
I love this idea! Something I'd consider building, thanks :)
Enjoyed the video. I'd be interested to hear more about your tech/ network setup if you ever get the chance. Thanks for sharing.
I love my Mac Mini and Apple keyboard/mouse. I've had them for about 6-7 years now and they have been flawless in performance. It's not the most powerful machine, but for what I need it to do, it's perfect.
The products are also apparently indestructible. All of the items have been dropped and dinged up pretty well, and still work perfectly. I've dropped them all hard enough for the metal cases to be bent and dented, and they are so scratched up it looks like I hit them with some 80 grit sandpaper, but it has made no difference.
The Apple products are tough as heck and are perfect in this sort of shop environment where they may take extra abuse.
I have the same orange keyboard cover they work great
hi, I'm from brazil . I found your video very impressive you won a new incrito
SO CLOSE TO 900K!!!!
Shop livestream would be awesome!
+I Like To Make Stuff Few questions, 1) Do you think I could run an HDMI cord from my camera to the monitor and use it as a live feed monitor for my overhead camera rig? 2) Do you think this would be strong enough to support a 9 lb. computer monitor? 3) Would it be stronger/more secure if I directly mounted the monitor to the second pine board (the one with the 2x4) using the VESA mounts on the back of the monitor? Love your amazing content! -Thanks!
Very well done.
I used 1 inch square steel tubing and 1/2" iron pipe using a floor flange to attach it to the table, and a square steel plate to attach it to the vesa mount holes on the monitor. With two 12" long pieces of the square tubing joined with a bolt at the end, it made an articulating arm that can fold flat against the wall, or can extend out two feet, and pivots over 90 degrees left or right. The only thing I didn't incorporate into my design was a provision for tilting.
this is cool bob. for the slipping i would suggest doing what jimmy does by brading the 2x4 first to secure it then fix it properly with screws.(i do this when building sets)
Good call!
Yes vote for the livestream! :D
Great idea and some that I could even build. Too bad I live in an apartment with concrete walls... Anyway, I was thinking a small tray or basket mounted on the outside swing arm might be helpful for a convenient place for your phone or other small USB devices, etc.
What is the chance, I was looking for one of these yesterday for the 22 inch one, and couldn't find one and then this video came up in my sub box, thanks for the vid you legend
Great! I hope it's helpful!
Clear plastic wrap is a good alternative and easy to replace when it goes bad.
Great idea!
nice quick project
Nice mount! +1 for live streams!
love the idea of a live web cast.
Its awesome how you can do this kind of thing
Good Job!
Yes definitely interested in live stream start as soon as possible
I'm looking to do a custom stand at work. Everyone has desk raising/lowering equipment so they can stand at their desks; but I need something a bit classier since I'm in a nice office (and a bit more flexible since I have multiple monitors, and a custom keyboard and mouse).
Plan is to use the VESA mount plates in the monitors, with hickory for the build material. The raising/lowering part is going to be two screw drives with heavy duty stepper motors, with a Kinect monitoring position and whether I'm sitting or standing to decide whether to raise or lower the whole rig. (If I want to get really fancy, I'm thinking of adding a couple gestures that I can look for with the Kinect).
Frostbain Slick! I'd love to see that!
I would love the in shop livestream.
I wish you're my neighbor, great project great work man.
I have an old PC in my shop to run my CNC, and I don't even have it hooked up to my router. I don't dare put it online. Not due to technical issues or anything - I just know how I am. If I tried to work on something while I had a video playing, I'd never get anything done. I have to focus on the project at hand, and a video would be too distracting. Of course it doesn't help that I don't have the world's longest attention spa... SQUIRREL!!!
wow, you made great stuff and are so simple when you made it... can you make a projector lift? greetings from Romania!
Ha! thats funny i bought a old intel mac mini on ebay for $60 for my shop computer. love it
Which specs does it have?
I'd love for you to do a simple project stream, that would be interesting! :)
You should totally do live streams!
That was cool and yes webcam it up.
Bob great set up but a couple pieces of even 1/2 inch plywood glued together would be better ,waiting for your lawn cutting video where you use remote control mower to cut your grass from your shop (hint hint) to rear drive wheels and a few servo motors lol can you do it ????
I'd love it of you streamed from the shop! Would def watch:) would you stream on twitch?
Put a half inch hole in the 2x4 before band-sawing?
Was wondering why not get a monitor that works with a VESA mount, but using the existing, tiltable mounting bracket is a pretty good idea.
I just went for cheap. Wasn't even sure I was going to mount it when I ordered it.
I Like To Make Stuff That's a valid enough reason. Also saves you from having to make another pivoting axis...
good stuff bob! question what program do you use to edit your videos? youve inspired me to start my own channel!
Awesome to hear! I edit in Final Cut Pro X
I would love the live streams :o
You have been practicing talking fast haven't you Bob? (Haha). Nice simple project build and very useful! Like the idea of the apple mini in the other room with USB hub for all the shop connections. Didn't know the X-Carve software could run an a Mini. Your definitely prepared for dust defense. You might try some kitchen clear cellphone (ex Cling Wrap) over the keyboard if what you have doesn't do the trick. The cellophane is easy to replace when it gets dust fogged.
MRrwmac Someone else mentioned that, fantastic idea!
Yeah, the Easel software that I use mostly runs in the browser. Some heavier software might require me to install Windows on the machine at some point, but that's not a problem (I just don't want to :)
Awesome idea....I was wondering if you were going to finish your arcade build anytime soon? I've been prepping for my own arcade build for a short while and even found a computer on the side of the road I might use (need to find a power cord first....) Anyways, any thoughts?
I do have plans for it. It's just hard to fit it in. It's coming, don't worry.
Hey do you have a schedule for uploads (eg. Every Saturday/once a fortnight etc)? Keep up the good vids :)
yes live !!
Live streaming would be very cool!
informative videos thanx
I am making a swing arm for my laptop... in my RV though. It will be attached to the wall and made to swing out about 10 inches. Would like some ideas on how I can adapt your idea.
You are awesome, I love you videos, pleas upload som more videos with the 3D printer. Sebastian.
love it
When is the ILTMS Soundtrack coming out?
yes to live feed !!
I will check that out
Very nice. I would like to see streaming video too..
How is that plug in part of the blue tooth speakers working for you? No idea what model you have but I have a similar thing, I use the blue tooth to stream audio from the phone, works great. I bought them for the speaker option though so I could throw them on the laptop, not to happy about that part of it. If someone takes a breath while talking they disconnect. Just curious if you have the same issue and what brand you are using. In a nut shell is the idea bad, or do I have a crap model?
Dave's DIY Mine seems to work pretty well, I just wish it was a little louder. It's a refurbished older version of this one
amzn.to/1f9KrBV (it was much cheaper too)
If you like Windows at all, I would recommend you check out the Intel Compute Stick, it runs full on Windows 8.1 and it's about the size of a ChromeCast.
Maybe make a 2 ( or 3 ) monitor stand for on your desk? Which you can hook onto your desk
Instead of regular wood glue use CA glue. You can put the 2x4 in place and hold it for about 15 seconds and it will be set up enough to flip it over and put the screws in without it sliding around. CA is also great for building jigs because you can go right to work with them.
Yeah it's very handy for that. Just didn't have any on hand at the moment.
you could try a rail system on the ceiling to move the monitor around
nice video.
Just what i need
To keep those cables from hanging tie them to the pegboard with zip ties, and make sure to leave extra cord by the monitor so it doesn't prohibit movability. This will provide a easily modifiable cable manager, and more work space below your monitor. Hope this helps.
Nathan Caggiano I just realized that there isn't a table underneath your monitor, well cable management is still good.
Nathan Caggiano Still a good call though, I'll probably do that!
Yeah live streaming would be great!
Live streaming, yes!
Is that an SDCC Nemesis Prime I see? Sweet little project btw!
No.. Custom painted, but good eye!
I Like To Make Stuff Oh, well, nice work on that as well! Always nice to find another TF fan.:) Keep up the great work!
Hi Bob, I am Brazilian and I love your work .. why u not do things for gamers?
The audience of gamers is quite large, you can make chairs, tables for PC, bookcases; I would be very interested in PC tables.
Live stream from the shop!
Btw loveing the the vid
Live stream on Twitch IRL? I'd watch for sure!
+Jon G I stream every Wednesday at 11am EST on Twitch. twitch.tv/iliketomakestuff
Insta-follow! Thanks for the heads up, I never even thought to look you up on Twitch.
I like how your machine cutting the wood
I noticed that you just left the slot you cut to open up the 2x4 holding the mount open. Did that ever give you any problems?
Fuck yeah dude!!! Live streams would be awesome; maybe on twitch as their live streaming system is a better then UA-cams!!! (Twitch is a live streaming site that's is based on live stream whilst UA-cam is more video based) you should build things everyday contraptions a person can use or like Mini DIYS a parent and kid van do? Hope you take this into regard and see this comment...
Nice videos and builds!
See yah
I noticed you have a classics nemesis prime..... cool :)
+Mitchimus Prime Good eye! Actually, that's a custom paint that I did.
oh nice! even cooler :)
Why not use the VESA screw in the back of the monitors instead of making a custom awkward shaped post holder?
i would be nice if u could do a custom stamp tutorial
in my shop i have a 32 inch tv, i looked at building a mount but i ended up just buying one it only cost me $20. unfortunatly in Australia it would cost around $20 to make something the same as you have made so i didnt see the point.
