@@scalebuildersguild thanks for the reply. I'm very interested in metal work and 3D printing is also on the list. I want to learn to make my own sliders, body mounts, bumpers etc. Honestly I'd watch videos on both and I think your fans would too
Great information and video. This is one thing that I never got into. I guess my style lends more towards shiny and new. One day I will try this out though.
👏👏👏 Excellent video !! This is exactly what I needed!! I remember at one time I started watching it then got interrupted by life 😁👍 just wanted to leave a little reminder for myself 👉 stage 3 7:55 stage 4 10:18 I completely agree!! Having a metal base adds so much to the personality to the rig forever metamorphosing 👌
What about using that last sophisticated technique but adding salt before the last paint and then grind down ..? I think I need to get some of that stuff and try!
About to paint my first body, the Axial Jeep Cherokee and this video (amazing) left me with a few questions. What would the order of operations be for painting up a brand new clear body? Paint the underside first and then apply the weathering to the top of the body? Paint the entire body on the top side laying down your base coats first and then applying weathering? I'm used to painting miniatures but there isn't a concept of an under and a top side so this is what left me a little confused.
Some cool tips, thanks. Going to try some of these on my crawlers. I find it a bit confusing though when you keep saying "sort of" and "kind of". When you say something like "you sort of brush it on" or "you kind of brush it on" is that different but similar to brushing it on? -- I usually paint my bodies with a different color under coat so when it gets scrapes during actual use, the scrapes show up better. Like silver under coat so the deep scrapes look like bare metal. One of my rigs I used 3 color layers; a rust color, black, then finally white. Light scrapes the black shows through. Heavy scrapes the rust color shows through.
Very very cool ! I would like see you add a how to do The real rust paints to trail dents and rot holes in the most realistic fashion possible. Thanks keep up the great work as your channel has become on of the best on utuber well at least to me any how thanks for all the hard work keep the runner sidw up ;)
With the sophisticated finishes, can you thin out the metal paint and let it run down the body before applying the rusting agent? I have a blazer body that has seen lots of use that I now want to add weathering to.
So whats wrong with just using that Iron based paint as an primer coat under a paint job and just let it get all of it scratches naturally? Would it still come through alright without the vinegar penetrating the paint afterward?
Feel silly for asking, maybe someone already did. But step three the final with sophisticated finishes will work ok on rhe outside of a lexan body? Really enjoy the videos and trying to get more into the scale details. Thanks Matt
Matt, great video! thank you for putting it together do you ever use soapy water to reduce water pooling when salting? i was finding it difficult to control coverage area shape and switched to liquid mask
Another awesome tips and tricks how to DIY home body appointments Video 😁👍 I just purchased a Rusty Set of the Sophisticated from eBay.... including shipping to Denmark 🇩🇰 $$$$$$ 85 😬😬😬 but I wanted to have it 💪🏼😄
How well does the Sophisticated Finishes iron hold up to getting bashed (ex: roll over while rock crawling)? Have you tried putting it on the inside of a clear lexan body (I'm sure it really wouldn't get the right effect, but it doesn't hurt to ask)?
Mostly hard body tips, but, provided you prep and paint on the exterior of the lexan body, a lot of these could work, assuming the body doesn't flex a bunch.
Hey mate, im new to rc, just got myself and the son a deadbolt each, could you use the Vallejo weathering wash on the new deadbolt lexan body, and get a good result? Cheers from Denmark, we love your channel, Keep it up.
@@scalebuildersguild thanks man, i actually just ordered the Tamiya PS 55 flat clear, i think its called. To tone down the shiny plastic look abit, if possible, and if the weathering wash will stick to that, well thats just great 😄
I’ve looked through the comments and I can’t seem to find the answer..... on a polycarbonate body, can you paint it with the "metal effects" iron paint? Does it stick? Does it chip off like regular latex paint? I am trying to do a cool ARRMA Infraction body... any info would be greatly appreciated!!!
It’ll chip off of lexan, yes. Unless you paint it on the outside and start with a layer or two of PS spray. Even then, I wouldn’t trust it to stick for long.
@@scalebuildersguild thank you for the info... that’s what I thought.... I’m gonna fake the rust with paint instead of the metal effect then.... thank you again! 👍🏼
I guess I don't have one specific to that, but you could dull coat the chrome, and then use a couple washes and Sophisticated Finishes to make it rusty.
trying the iron file paint technique (the product you use is not available to me, but other iron file base paint is). when i apply the vinigar it will rust a bit, then when i put a layer or 2 of paint over it and sand it down a bit then reapply the vinigar it seems not to rust, It seems only to leave rings and marks of where the vinigar was (water rings most likely) any tips or pointer as to what i might do wrong?

Exactly. Anything is possible with patience and practice.

The sophisticated paint, do you have to sand through the paint and use vinegar, or will it start to come through when you drive in water over time
You don't have to, but it helps to give it a start.
I'm really interested in the sophisticated finishes. Do you have to cover the entire piece or can you put it in spots you know you are wanting rust?
For a smooth overall finish, I'd put it everywhere.
About to paint my first body, the Axial Jeep Cherokee and this video (amazing) left me with a few questions. What would the order of operations be for painting up a brand new clear body? With the sophisticated finishes, can you thin out the metal paint and let it run down the body before applying the rusting agent?
I have a blazer body that has seen lots of use that I now want to add weathering to.
Absolutely. The rust effect will take longer to activate if you thin it out.
Video idea incoming. ........ How bout a series on scale trail building ?
If I had room for that, I'd so do it.
Intro was great lol
My Question is will white distilled vinegar work the same because the vinegar your using is brown
It’s old, well-used vinegar, and yes, white vinegar is what you want.
Thank you matt for answering my Question much luv mi big bro!!!!
😀🤙🇺🇸💜💯♻️
So whats wrong with just using that Iron based paint as an primer coat under a paint job and just let it get all of it scratches naturally? Would it still come through alright without the vinegar penetrating the paint afterward?
I think it's best to activate it first to start the process. Not sure it would get enough penetration otherwise.
So much skill . Really Awesome 😎 subbed ✅
Thank you so much 👍
Where do you like to buy your Styrene from and what glue/bonder do you use?
I buy my styrene locally in 4x8 foot sheets at an industrial plastics supplier. MEK is my bonding liquid of choice.
You know you’re serious about scale building when you buy Styrene in 4x8 sheets! Holy cow man!

Feel silly for asking, maybe someone already did. But step three the final with sophisticated finishes will work ok on rhe outside of a lexan body? Really enjoy the videos and trying to get more into the scale details. Thanks Matt
If you prep the body with a flat clear coat beforehand, you’ll probably have better luck with adhesion.
Thanks, glad I asked before I tried, I'll do that. Really appreciate the reply, thanks for all your help and keep the videos coming 🙂
the sophisticated finish will take some time to get the right look, but when its done correct it seems way cool!
Yep, you certainly don't want to overdo it with that!

Can you use salt with the iron-oxide paint to get the pockmarks along with the rust?
I don’t see why not!
Are these mostly for hard bodies or will they work on lexan to?
Mostly hard body tips, but, provided you prep and paint on the exterior of the lexan body, a lot of these could work, assuming the body doesn't flex a bunch.
Any other links to that rust stuff in the last example? Says it's no longer available
Would zinc paint and vinegar work for rust? Those iron based and rust effects is not available here..
Sorry sir, no idea. Zinc doesn't rust, does it?
