It just comes across as ticking the woke box for no reason what so ever. It's not like there are no strong women in the book: Gaius Helen Mohiam, Jessica, Chani, the Shadout Mapes, Ramallo (Sayyadina), Irulan and Alia.
To be so mad about a fairly unimportant characters gender is pathetic. The character still played the same role and the death was arguably better than having her wander about delirious in the desert being scolded by the memory of her father for 10 minutes and then blowing up. that would have ruined the tone and pacing of the movie. Oh and Irulan being an example of a strong woman? yeah right
@@09tomforeman It strikes me that you are more triggered on this subject than I am. I just think it is wrong to ignore what the author wrote. Especially as they put less effort in the new version to show the character changing allegiance. I guess you know better than the author how his story should be told. I also gave a list of strong female roles and you cherry picked one of them. Despite that, Irulan is a core character through this book and the next. Strong character roles doesn't have to mean powerful forces for good. Are you going to suggest that she doesn't strongly influence the story going forward?
@@Dunk1970 if you say so fella. There are many things that both films missed or changed from the authors writing so that’s a poor argument. Kynes gender has no relevance to the story. the role stayed the same. And the character doesn’t change allegiance, Kynes always does what is best for the Fremen. ‘I guess you know better than the author’ - don’t be a child.. my point about Irulan wasn’t to counter your argument about strong women, I was simply disagreeing that she’s a strong woman. A strong character needs to have… a strong character. Irulan is never in control of her own life and is used by others. After the attempt on Paul she spends her life regretting her choices and trying to make amends. That’s not a strong woman
@@09tomforeman "don't be a child"? Resorting to name calling now are we when debating if gender swapping for no reason is a good idea. Very mature. As you point out, switching the gender didn't affect the story, except in a certain parentage aspect; Oh, and that the Fremen are a patriarchal society. They were just going to let Paul in and sacrifice his mother for her water. And if a Fremen wants another Fremen's wife, he can battle them to the death for her. It was a totally pointless thing to do. I'll rephrase what I've already said, that there are plenty of strong and lead roles played by women in the story. If there weren't many already then there would be as semblance of a case. This gender swap was nothing more than woke box ticking by the director. If you are now going to suggest that it is good to erradicate the patriarchy aspect of the Fremen for sexism reasons, shall we wait and see if they do the same to the Bene Gesserit matriarchy? I sincerely hope they don't as the woke blandification has done enough damage already. The fact remains that there was no point in doing it (no lack of strong female roles), and there are valid reasons not to do it (he was an authority figure in a patriarchy), therefore it was wrong and pointless to do it.

This is exactly why i still hesitate to buy the game. I love dune 2000 game style but this just looks way more different. Reminds me of total war games mixed with civilization and sim city. I think i will wait for a real rts game about dune.
Smugglers are a pretty important faction, Ordos dont exist in the books, although Frank had no problem in the dune encyclopedia, so I guess they are canon and a House. Its muhc worse to still keep Liet as a woman, makes less sense considering its the Imperial planetologist and father to chani but hey. The game itself is just meh, highfleet ends up being a better dune game.
I would say although combat can be very potent I find that so far the alternate victory conditions come into play more often than outright killing people if only because most matches have 4 people. Early on at least 1 or 2 dudes end up getting killed then its a bit of a stalemate until someone gets econ/diplo/hegemony victory (that or someone messed up micro and dies army wise letting the other dude siege) but because there is less of a focus on just straight up rts combat the game plays a bit more slowly.

I think Ordos is owned by EA still, and they can of course only use it if they also have the Dune license, so basically never seeing them again probably.
Lynch's Dune was bad, but I put it at a slightly higher rating than the remake. For as convoluted as the eighties version was it did a better job of explaining the Dune universe and to be real, besides better special effects the new version doesn't do anything better. That said, highly disappointed to hear this game isn't more along the lines of Battle for Arakkis.

Now if they did something like Dune 2 with the strategic zoom from Supreme Commander plus the full motion videos from C&C Westwood... just imagine the masterpiece of RTS that would be.
watched a few hours of game play and i think its still more sins than civilisation, villages change hands a lot and the neutral villages launch attacks etc

Well said! I’m not even going to watch the woke Dune 1 & 2 movies.
wth! everyone knows the evil harkonnen are red, the insidious ordos are green and the noble atreides are blue!!!
Ah yes this is the truth of Dune, your source of fact is the same as mine - Dune 2 :)
@@WorthABuyreviews i grew up on it back in the DOS days if i remember correctly. Or maybe it was already on windows 95... Pretty sure it was DOS. It's the game that made me fall in love with the genre and it's what started the golden age of RTS!
Mac, how the hell do you review this game without mentioning the best part: you can ride a freaking sand worm as Fremen.
Loved dune 2 on the Amiga
Didn't talk much about the sandworms Mack...This is Dune!
This looks promising - Liet being female is putting me off a slight bit as it doesn’t follow the book but I guess they’re sort of trying to prevent confusion for people who only watched the new movie… (which was great btw!)
Liet being man or woman is not a big deal of a change, really doesn't matter at all, if you read the book 1, you know what I'm talking about. I think because they got 3 male chars, and they wanted to get the movie vibe and put Liet as a woman.
@@Zalinho in book 1 it doesn’t matter much but it kind of messes up the prequels a bit (if I recall correctly it’s the ‘House…’ series by Brian Herbert); as said, it’s not super important it’s just a bit against canon…
@@irbaboon1979 Thanks, didn't read Brian Herbert books yet, but I must in the months to come.
@@Zalinho The ‘House…’ trilogy is entertaining but very different style and goes a bit too far with Vor’s longevity; the schools trilogy I found a bit lacking… there’s a few books they tried to stuff inbetween original Dune and Messiah, those were ok but forgettable. The jihad trilogy is also fun - Erasmus is just written in a fun way… haven’t followed the series for a while though - might be other books out. Anyway, if you get around to it enjoy but expect a very different style.
Amigo, you're the best... Dig on your reviews!!! Cheers from the other side, the far side, on the pond.
This is shaping up to be my personal game of the year.
The Ordos were never in the books, they were a made up faction for the game. So I guess this time they decided to keep the spirit of Ordos without actually making the name up
Oddly enough, the Ordos had green color in the game while Atreides were blue.
Yeah makes sense, but still annoying :) they were my favourite faction.
Fremen's leader Liet Kynes being a female was an invention as well... since he is a male in the books.
(they changed that for woke reasons...)
Dune 2 was the best! 5 minutes for the first mission, 10 minutes for the second. Hell, where did the last 12 hours go? And realizing you can survive the nuclear strike on the final map was one of the coolest experiences I ever had in gaming.
I'll have to have a look at this game. Any info on the developers?
Are you going to review Terraformers? Looks like a game you'd like.
Yes it looks fun, got a few more to do first though
@@WorthABuyreviews Wonderful.
do they have the big worm?
Mack, don't know if you've already covered this in a video but how come you still play at 1080p?
Why not
Worms should be bigger and swallow more units at once. Needs more units and air fights. Units are bigger than villages. There is a lot more to be wanted from this game. Hopefully devs be active and update it regularly
Do you think the games become tedious and samey after like 15-30 mins?
The unit variety is supposed to quite low?
I haven’t read or seen the movies, would that matter playing this?
Does the troops have a ranking system like Command and Conquer?
The new Dune movie I thought was great though can get if it's not everyones cup of tea. You'd be happy to hear Mack that the director despises Marvel MCU movies as just trash movies, said they're 'cut and paste' movies that are turning us into Zombies, he's damn right
Funny that he made a comic book movie.
@@TheClassicalSauce oh which one was that?
@@omnisciency Watchmen.
WAIT... NO CO-OP? Even LAN? What a missed opportunity. Would have loved playing this with the lads.
It is planned but no one knows when they will release the multiplayer function.
Dune 2000 was Amazing. Emperor Battle for Dune was one of my favorites. I was always a C&C and Westwood Studios fan. When I heard there was a new Dune game I was excited to look it up but this doesn't actually look as good as the old games. Was hoping for an updated classic Dune RTS.
I should clarify I think the game looks fun in it's own right but not what I was hoping to see.
This is exactly why i still hesitate to buy the game. I love dune 2000 game style but this just looks way more different. Reminds me of total war games mixed with civilization and sim city. I think i will wait for a real rts game about dune.
was hoping you would do this review I was on the fence
payday soon so I might treat myself
you got old megs number?
give us an emperor battle for dune remaster pleaseeeee
this looks like fun and not too complicated like most 4x games gonna def give it a try
Have they said if they are going to make it multiplayer?
Smugglers are a pretty important faction, Ordos dont exist in the books, although Frank had no problem in the dune encyclopedia, so I guess they are canon and a House. Its muhc worse to still keep Liet as a woman, makes less sense considering its the Imperial planetologist and father to chani but hey. The game itself is just meh, highfleet ends up being a better dune game.
I've always wanted a remake of Emperor: Battle for Dune. I was curious how alike this might be, obviously not very.
"There are no satellites over Arrakis, the Atreides will die in the dark." - Baron, DUNE Part 1 (2021)
This looks like it will be fun to play. Especially old school "LAN" style with a friend.
Mac - It has the Multiplayer button in the MENU too so at the release ww will have multiplayer too. GREAT Review
great to hear that it's a good game, I was expecting it to be not so great. I'll have to check it out when it comes out now. Thanks, Mack.
It seems pretty mid.
greatm the untis are as tall as mountains compared to the buildings and ofcourse there is the ''manpower'' thing again, ''build een huge army of THIRTY SOLDIERS'', nope maybe ill pirate this but its not even worth it from the look of this.
It’s abstract like that to make the game easily readable. It makes the game better, not worse.
@@jonahulichny9874 i respect your opinion but it still looks like shit.
I always get physically ill when people who play rts games, cant figure out how to hold down the shift key.
I can see the smugglers being the Ordos, as because the Ordos were trading guild specializing in sabotage - so I can see them as the smugglers.
But the fact that the Attreides are green and the smugglers (read Ordos) are blue just triggers me...
They released a DLC with the Ixians that are basicaly the Ordos in Dune lore.
Mac was waiting ONLY FOR YOUR review :) ..BTW have you played "Dune battle for Emperor"????
LOVED Dune 2 as a kid, even though this is different, I am still going to check this one out looks fun. Also if you don't mind reading, check out the books!
Is there Active Pause?
It is only single player for now, they said it would be multi soon, like end of quarter 2 I think
needs a space element to it imho, your relationship with the spacing Guild and off planet markets is essential
I think Ordos is owned by EA still, and they can of course only use it if they also have the Dune license, so basically never seeing them again probably.
I've seen so many episodes of this and I still have no clue what he says at the start.
"Let's read the words of the words of the developer"?
Lynch's Dune was bad, but I put it at a slightly higher rating than the remake. For as convoluted as the eighties version was it did a better job of explaining the Dune universe and to be real, besides better special effects the new version doesn't do anything better. That said, highly disappointed to hear this game isn't more along the lines of Battle for Arakkis.
How is it not an RTS? Or do you just mean its not a turn-based RTS?
Heresy!!! saying the movie from the 80's is a bad movie! HERESY!!!
Dune 2 & Dune 2000 were great... Precursors to C&C :-)
Mac - Thanks for the great review. The new Dune movie was Great (as a fan of the original books) But the new movie covers roughly the first half of the first book (Dune).
They mentioned Multiplayer will come in the future :)
I think ordos was invented for the rts's, so probably don't have the rights to use them. The smugglers are in the books so makes sence to add them.
I was waiting for this one. Great job Mack.
Edit.... I was expecting something like Sins of a Solar Empire, this is not my cup of tea... looks like CIV games.
I really hope I misjudged this game. However, the faction choice is weird. The game also looks a bit shallow, almost like a interactive tabletop board game. And where are all those towns coming from? I can't remember that from the books. The Fremen live in caves.
There are special map locations called fremen encampments if I remember correctly. Separate from the towns.
@@jonahulichny9874 I've to take a look again at this game when it's more finished. I really like Dune and I really like to see the producers succeed with a good new Dune game.
Only four factions? What about Corrino, Space Guild, Bene Gesserit, Tleilax, Ix, and Jews?
i havent played the game yet so maybe im missing things but seems like it makes zero sense for ether the fremen or smugglers to be paying any kind of spice tax to the emperor. both operate outside the the empires jurisdiction. same thing if they interact with CHOAM and the landsraad.
Lynch's Dune was bad, but I fucking love it anyway.
I showed it to my gf recently. She couldn’t believe me that I seriously enjoy that movie. 😆
Ordos are sort-of 'non-canon' .. they are mentioned in maybe 2 places that they exist and that's it..
i mean there is not enough information about them to build them as a definitive faction like dune2 or emperor: bfd does. Maybe the creators of this game wanted to stay closer to canon ;)
I wish this was a command and conquer style game that followed the story of the first book and included filler that did not violate cannon.
As far as I understand, House Ordos is not considered canon I'm afraid. Used to love the 3 houses in Dune 2 and 2000
Why are they shooting guns? Been a while since I read Dune, but I thought guns were a no-go.
Lasguns are a big nono. Projectile weapons are used but countered by shields. So they have to use low velocity projectile weapons like needle guns to get through the shields but they get countered by armor worn under the shield.
My very first computer game was Dune in 1992. I was like 7.
I never play games until they are fully released, but I bought this right now, supporting RTS and Dune in video games 100%.
In 2022, Star wars is dead, Dune is the hope for us scifi nerds.
Mack I bought it a couple days ago on launch, the first time I haven't needed to request a refund in a long while :)
Also, upvote on the Dune 2 proper remake idea!
This is honestly pretty much just Stellaris with Dune coat of paint. Obviously it's a slight oversimplification, but it plays so similar that I think it's fair.
