- Do you know how to start art? Do you have a solid start of class routine for your elementary/ primary art classes? Do you wow evaluators with your art class opening? Do former students visit with you and recall how they enjoyed your classroom rules and begin reciting them?
If you answered no to any of these questions, I am going to teach you how to start art! I am a K-6 Elementary/Primary Art Educator in a Tile 1 school just outside of Washington D.C. This video is an in depth walk through of how I organize the beginning of my elementary art classes. I explain all the details from getting students seated to the start of my lessons.

Your class sounds fun. How I wish I had an hour. I have half hour classes. Art is not a priority at my school and I’m basically covering preps. It’s an inner city, very poor neighborhood and we can’t ask parents for any donations of any kind. They’re usually struggling just to feed themselves and their kids.
I’m going to do my best, but it’s my first year as an art teacher and I’ve inherited a room that has been very poorly cared for by a string of unqualified art teachers. It’s basically a messy, dirty, hoarder’s paradise, with few usable supplies. I think it has also been the dumping ground for things that nobody knows what to do with. I appreciate your videos! My situation isn’t anything like yours, but hopefully we have the potential to make it better. I definitely have an uphill climb ahead of me.
It sounds like you have a large challenge ahead of you! I do believe your passion and getting the students excited can make art a priority at your school. My school is a new building in a large and wealthy district. My building however is title one (many students receive free and reduced lunches and we receive government funds). My school is also 60% English language learners. I hope you can find people and businesses in the area that can help provide you with more supplies. I realize that is extra work for you. I know I’m the past the Washington Post donated rolls of paper to my school. I also get items from my cafeteria that they no longer use or are recycling. Be creative! You have got this!

Love this! Do you start all of your classes (k-6) the same way? Do you use the same PowerPoint/sayings/songs with each class, or is it all different? I would love to know how you manage different classes based on age and grade level-if you do that. Thank you!
Thank you! Yes, I pretty much do the same thing with everyone. I don’t do the criss cross applesauce song with 3rd-6th. I only review the rules in 5th and 6th grade if the class did not earn the golden paint brush the previous week. You will enjoy this video too- How I Start my Elementary Art Classes

Thank you for your kind feedback. The Mona Points? It’s a variation on the happy/sad board where I give the students points (feedback on how they are doing) the points help the students earn a golden paintbrush or silver paintbrush. I’ll cover this in depth in future videos! Be sure to subscribe.

What if instead of a sign with a chant to begin, I have students mimic a painting that's on the screen? Maybe the scream, mona lisa, or something else that may not be so easy to replicate (i.e. cause the students to get creative?)
That sounds like a fun idea!
