- Hi! I am Katie Jarvis. I am a K-6 elementary art teacher. In this video, I go over routines to teach your students on the first day of art. If you can’t get to these day 1 then I recommend teaching these routines within the first few weeks of school.

Finding you has been a God send. Thank you for taking the time to help others in this important field!
Wow, thank you! Happy to help. I learned too many things the hard way.
Hey Katie, thanks very much for sharing your tips for teaching routines in the art room! You have an enthusiastic smile & I appreciate finding your videos!
You are so welcome! Thank you so much for watching! 🙂
Agree! Very helpful!
Glad you think so!
This is amazing!
Thank you!
Hi Katie! I absolutely love your management style. What is the pacing of how you teach routines? It seems like there are lots of routines and procedures. Do the kids get confused? I am starting at a new school at about 15 weeks into the new school year and I want to teach these but I don't want to overwhelm the kids. Thanks in advance!
It’s really important to start s-l-o-w. For me I don’t want them to do something “wrong” for a few weeks like coming into the room loudly. I find it difficult to back track and set a new expectation of coming in quickly and quietly after they have been doing a sloppy job. Here is a link to a free printable with the routines I would teach in the first few weeks. I teach the routines as they come up naturally. So I teach how to come in and how to sit first. I wouldn’t teach how to wash a paintbrush or any extra information that isn’t necessary day 1. My classes are an hour so, I can cover a lot of info the first day, allow them to practice the routines and start making something. Depending on the time you have you might want to purposefully cover some important routines on day 2 and let students know that. It sounds like you are going to be super prepared! 🙂 www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Elementary-Art-Routines-Checklist-for-Back-to-School-10080904

can you also share the presentation with us?
I don’t think I’m able to at this time as the images are copyrighted. It may be something I do in the future. Thank you so much for watching!
I thought that said “poutines” 😞 I don’t think I’m ready yet
Ha!! You can grab some poutine to snack on and watch the video to help prepare! I went back this week. It is so much talking I’m exhausted 😴
