Great advice! My experience with own-roots is exactly what Paul is saying - that spindly little own root looks like a full grown old rose in 4 years. I have one 4 year old climber that was one little cane when I got it. It's now 12-14 feet in either direction. They grow fast!

You can certainly add water before or as you are planting. I've found because the mix I just put back in is loose and I'm not stamping it down the water gets through it just fine.

I put some freebie rose cuttings with small leaves in the ground at less than a foot apart coz I wanted a patch like you show. Deer got em a few times so they are still small and now I'm happy they are coz it looks like I'll have to move a few out of the mosh. I will keep those in a larger pot and give them some juice for a year :)

IN EVERY VIDEO PAUL SAYS HE LIVES IN HEAVY CLAY IN S.C. AND IT'S A MASSIVE CHORE TO DIG LARGE HOLES IN IT. Not sure if he is trying to appease the ladies watching these videos or what. He's built for digging. His arms are thicker than Popeye's, and clay is just a good workout, LOL!

You are taking the fear out of roses.Now could you do one on how to protect a inground rose from a unexpected into coming hard frost.I wraped the crown in newspaper,cover with black plastic bag(all I had on hand) and put sun heated water bottle to secure clinched bag and then covered bottom of the covering with mulched oak leaves. Hope it does ok for the next few days.Have the sunny yellow knock out,has beautiful little yellow buds,would hate to loose them...I an in zone 9/10 FLA .

Hey Paul Zimmerman Roses Very informative video. I wish I had seen it before I planted my first own root rose seedlings in this huge 24x24in pot. They haven't grown that much and it's been about 8 weeks. Should I move them to smaller pots? I'm in Zone 7 in central NC.
***** At this point I'd leave it where it is. It's putting out roots and disturbing it may do more harm than good.

I wanted to ask for your help . I have been to ALDI shop and seen some rose bushes which looked dead and had wax on them, I have bought them as they were only for £1 . will they grow I have soaked them in water I am hoping that the will grow

You should be find planting it right now. Mulch around it and if you get a freeze in the next few months pile leaves over it while it's cold and then take them off when it warms up.

Hardwood mulch? Doesn't that effect the soil ph due to the high acidity?

Hi Paul! I’m growing an own root discontinued rose so I’m giving it its best shot and starting it in a gallon pot. How often should I water it in the pot? And how long do you think it will take until it’s ready to go in the ground? I definitely don’t want to plant it in the heat.

@@Rena0Dawn Most likely they will ship in early spring. I assume it's a smaller pot and you want to put it in a one gallon pot to grow it to some size before you plant it in the ground? Assuming that's the case likely watering every other day will take care of it as long as the soil drains well. Roses don't like wet feet so don't be afraid to let the soil dry out a bit between watering.
what do i do if my bare root roses canes ( i peeled my self) a little of the canes stick skin on the top when i first got em. :,( i wasn't thinking.what do i do???
I am planting five Lady Emma Hamiltons in pots tomorrow. Should I add some root stimulator to the water? I live in northern Indiana. It's July 3rd now, so when should I transplant the pots to the ground? Should I put some cypress mulch in the pot or leave it uncovered?
You can certainly add root stimulator to the water. It can only help. If you plant them in pots now I'd put them in the ground in early September so they have time to get established before winter. Mulch is always a good idea. Great choice of rose by the way!

As I looked through the 20 22 catalog I noticed if not all most of the climbing roses are grafted why is that why are there only grafted climbers
Nurseries that offer own root roses have plenty of climbers on their own roots.

Hi Paul, I'm from Malaysia and it is a tropical weather ( hot, humid and rain for the whole year. I need your advice how can I plant a rose in this situation.
You will want a rose that is pretty disease resistant for that climate. I would ask around to see if there are any other rose growers in your area that might be able to give advice on what roses do well in that kind of climate.
You'll need to try and find roses that grow well in your area. Are there any local public gardens that grow roses. Trying finding out what grows well for them.
Roses are very hardy and you’re not going to kill them unless you don’t water them. Don’t drown them.

Why do people buy bare root roses when grafted ones are better?
Grafted isn't necessarily better. Grafted puts on more of a show in the short term, but own root is better suited to colder climates and for the long run. Generally speaking too you can avoid graft born diseases and completely avoid die back that results in the undesirable looking graft taking over.
Where can l get bare root roses to buy from a garden center in the Hastings area
